The anti -theft alarm system is switched on when you lock the
driver's door manually using the fo ld-out key, or when you use the
remote con trol. The system is activated approximately 30 seconds
after the vehicle is locked . The indicator light~ fig. 35 starts
flashing rapidly for 30 seconds and then blinks slowly.
How i s th e a nti-th eft ala rm s yste m sw itch ed off?
The anti -theft alarm system is switched off only when you use the
remote contro l to unlock your veh icle . If you do not open a door
within 30 seconds after you have unlocked with the remote control,
the vehicle will lock itself again automatically.
If you lock jus t th e driv er's door using your key , the front
passenger 's door and the rear lid remain locked .

When the vehic le is locked, the alarm system mon itors and protects
the following parts of the v ehicl e:
• engine compartment
• luggage compartment
• doors
• ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will be triggered if one of
the doors , the engine hood or the rear lid are opened , or if the igni ­
tion is turned on .
The anti- theft alarm system will also go off when the battery is
disconnected.
You can also trigger the alarm by pressing the PANIC button on your remote -contro l key. This will alert other people in case of emer -
gency . Press the
PANIC button again to turn of f the alarm. ..,_

Opening and closing
H ow is th e a nti-th eft alarm swit ch ed off when
trigger ed?
The alarm system is switched off when you unlock the vehicle using
the remote -con trol key or when the ignition is switched on . The
alarm wi ll also switch itse lf off when it comes to the end of its cycle.
Em ergenc y flasher
The emergency flasher will blink brief ly when the doors, engine
hood and rear lid are properly closed .
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check the doors, engine hood
and rear lid to make sure they are properly closed. If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the anti-theft alarm switched on,
the emergency flashers will blink only after you have closed the
door or lid.
[ i ] Tips
• For the anti -theft a larm system to function p roperly, make sure
a ll vehicle doors and windows are closed before leav ing the vehicle .
• When you open the vehicle fr om the driver's door using the key,
the central locking switch will work only after you have switched on
the ignition . •
Power windows

If the respective switch is pushed or pulled the window will
open or c lose. The power window switches have a
two -posi ­

Opening the windows
Press the sw itch and hold it down until the window has
reached the des ired position.

-Press the switch briefly to open the window automat i­
cally. By briefly pressing the switch again, the downward
travel of the window can be stopped in any position

Closing the windows
-Pull the sw itch and hold it until the window has reached
the des ired pos ition.
- Pull the switch
briefly to close the window automatically .
By briefly pressing the sw itch again, the upward travel of
the window can be stopped in any position=>& .
Switch @~ page 48 , fig. 36 operates the window in the driver's
door.
Switch @ operates the window in the front passenger 's door .
& WARNING
• Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, especially with
access to vehicle keys. Unsupervised use of the keys can result in
starting of the engine and use of vehicle systems such as power
windows, etc. which could result in serious injury.
• Remember -you can still open or close the power windows for
about ten minutes after the ignition is switched off. Only when
either of the front doors are opened are the power windows
switched off.
• Be careful when closing the windows . Check to see that no one
is in the way, or serious injury could result!
• Always remove the ignition key whenever you leave your
vehicle.
• If you lock your vehicle from the outside, no one, especially chil­
dren, should remain in the vehicle.
• Do not stick anything on the windows or the windshield that
may interfere with the driver's field of vision.

• When the doors are opened, the windows are automatically
lowered 10 mm.
• The windows can st ill be opened and closed for abou t ten
minutes after the ignition has been turned off. The power windows
are not shut off until one of the front doors is opened. •
Convenience close/open feature
You can close or open the windows from outside when
you lock or unlock your car with the key.

Clear vision
Coming home situation
In
darkness, the activated system will turn on the headlights, side
marker lights , rear side marker lights , tail lights, and rear license
plate light as soon as the driver's door is opened from inside.
As long as one of the doors or the rear lid remains open, the set of
external lights will keep burning for about four minutes maximum.
To provide light for departure, the set of vehicle lights will keep
burning for about another 30 seconds after all doors and the rear lid
have been closed.
The factory-set time of 30 seconds until the lights are switched off can be adjusted if you prefer a longer or shorter duration. Have the
adjustment done by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified work­
shop. The system can be adjusted to keep the lights burning for a
maximum of 60 seconds.
Leaving home situation
As soon as the vehicle is unlocked by pressing the
CD button on your
remot e control, the set of external l ights is switched on .
The external lights are switched off as soon as the driver's door is
opened from outside . Even if you had the system readjusted to keep
the lights burning for an extended time for coming home, the
external lights will be turned off if you do not open the driver's door
within 60 seconds after unlocking. See chapter "Opening and
Closing" in your Owner's Manual. If the lights are switched off
before you reach the driver's door, press the@ button once more to
turn them on again.
[ i] Tips
• Do not attach any stickers to the windshield in front of the two
light sensors, as this would interfere with both the automatic oper­
ation of the headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside
mirror(s). • If
the vehicle is remotely unlocked and locked three times in
succession, leaving home will not turn on the lights a fourth time to
safeguard the battery and lights.
• If you wish to use the coming home/leaving home function regu­
larly, you can leave it activated at all times without risking perma­
nent strain on the electrical system. As the system is controlled by
light sensors, it will only be energized in darkness .
• Frequent use of the coming home/leaving home function for
approaching and departing a vehicle parked in the dark will strain
the battery. This applies particularly if only short distances are
driven between stops . Occasionally drive longer distances to make
sure the battery is recharged sufficiently.
• If the fog lights have been switched on by the coming
home/leaving home function, they will always be switched off when
you switch on the ignition. •
Instrument panel illumination
The illumination of the instruments, displays and the
center console can be adjusted.

Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights for the driver
and the front passenger.

- Press the button @. The LED in the button illuminates.
Deactivating door contact circuit
- Press the button @. The LED in the button goes out.
Front reading lights ~
- Press one of the switches @ to turn the right or left
reading light on or off.
With the door contact circuit, the interior lights turn on as soon as
you unlock the vehicle or open the doors . The interior lights are also
turned on when the ignition key is removed. The lights turn off
about 30 seconds after the doors are closed. When the vehicle is
locked or when the ignition is turned on, the interior lights are
turned off .

Clear vision
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
minutes to prevent battery draining.
The brightness of the lights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are switched on and off. •
Luggage compa rtm ent light
The light is located on the right side of the luggage compartment.
These lights come on automatically when the rear lid is opened. The
lights turn off automatically if the lid is left open for more then 10
minutes. •
Vision
Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

The driver's and passenger's sun visors can be pulled from the
brackets above the center of the windshield and swung toward the

The vanity mirrors in the sun visors are equipped with lids. When the

If you are park ing on an in cline (the font of your vehicle facing
uphill!, turn the front whe els to the left so that they point
away from
the curb .

Rear acoustic park assist
Acoustic park assist gives a warning a bout o bstacles
behind the vehicle.
Description
The rear acoustic park assist (4 -channel acoustic park assist) deter ­
mines the d istance of the vehic le from an obstac le using u ltrasonic
sensors. The sensors are in the rear bumper. The volume and the
pitch of the chimes can be adjusted through the menu display
=> page 27.
The range at which the sensors start to m easure is about :

The pa rking assist is activated when rever se ge ar is engaged . A brief
tone confirms that the system is activated .
Backing up
Distance warning when backing up starts when an obstacle is
detec ted in the range of the park ass ist system . As the distance
decreases, the time interval between the aud ible tones becomes
shorter .
When the distance is less than 1 foot (0.30 m) , the tone becomes
continuous . At this point you should stop backing up.
Please note that low objects a lready signalled by a warning can
disappear from the sys tem's detection range and wil l not continue
t o be signa lled . ..,

Loose items in the luggage compartment can shift
suddenly, changing vehicle handling characteristics. Loose
items can also increase the risk of serious personal injury in
a sudden vehicle maneuver or in a collision.
- Distribute the load evenly in the luggage compartment.
- Always place and properly secure heavy items in the
luggage compartment as far forward as possible
~ page 121, fig. 99.
Secure luggage using the tie-downs provided~
page 77.
- Make sure that the rear seat back is securely latched in
place.
& WARNING
Improperly stored luggage or other items can fly through the
vehicle causing serious personal injury in the event of hard braking or an accident. To help reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
• Always put objects , for example, luggage or other heavy items
in the luggage compartment.
• Always secure objects in the luggage compartment using the
tie-down eyelets and suitable straps.
& WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehicle handles. To help
reduce the risk of a loss of control leading to serious personal
injury:
• Always keep in mind when transporting heavy objects, that a
change in the center of gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
-Always distribute the load as evenly as possible.

-Place heavy objects as far forward in the luggage compart­
ment as possible.
• Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating or the Gross
Vehicle Weight Rating specified on the safety compliance sticker
on the left door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight standards
can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently.
• Please observe information on safe driving~
page 114.
& WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into the
vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while driving.
• Never transport objects larger than those fitting completely
into the luggage area because the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
• If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open, observe the
following notes to reduce the risk of poisoning:
-Close all windows,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.
& WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all windows and the rear lid are
securely closed and locked to reduce the risk of injury when the
vehicle is not being used.
• After closing the rear lid, always make sure that it is properly
closed and locked .
• Never leave your vehicle unattended especially with the rear lid
left open. A child could crawl into the vehicle through the luggage
compartment and close the rear lid becoming trapped and unable

& WARNING
Not using a child safety seat, using the wrong child safety seat or
improperly installing a child restraint increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death in a crash.
• Never install rear-facing child safety seats or infant carriers on
the front passenger seat -even with an Advanced Airbag System .
A child will be seriously injured and can be killed when the
inflating airbag hits the child safety seat or infant carrier with
great force and smashes the child safety seat and child against the
backrest, or door=>
page 137, "Child restraints on the front seat -
some important things to know" .
• Always install rear-facing child safety seats or infant carriers on
the rear seat.
• Never install a rear-facing child restraint in the forward-facing
direction. Such restraints are designed for the special needs of
infants and very small children and cannot protect them properly
if the seat is forward-facing.
• If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the
front passenger seat because of exceptional circumstances and
the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and stay on, immediately install the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating position and have the airbag system inspected by your
Audi dealer .
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS whenever using a child
restrained in a vehicle is being used=>
page 125 , "Safety belts",
=> page 135, "Airbag system" and=> page 157, "Important things
to know". •

Convertible child safety seats
Properly used convertible child safety seats can help
protect toddlers and children over age one who weigh
between 20 and 40 lbs. (10 and 20 kg) in a crash.

When using the vehicle safety belt to install a child safety
seat, you must first activate the convertible locking
feature on the safety belt to prevent the child safety seat
from moving :::;,
page 168 or install the seat using the
LATCH attachment .
Push the child safety seat down with your full weight to
get the safety belt really tight so that the seat cannot
move forward or sideways more than one inch (2.5 cm)
:::;, page 168 .
A toddler or child is usually too large for an infant restraint if it is
more than one year old and weighs more than 22 lbs. (10 kg).
Toddlers and children who are older than one year up to about 4
years old and weigh more than 22 lbs (10 kg) up to 40 lbs . (18 kg)
should be properly res trained in a child safety seat certified for their
size and weight=> fig. 119 .
The airbag on the passenger side makes the front seat a potentially
dangerous place for a child to ride . The front seat is not the safest •

• Always make sure that the safety belt retractor is locked when
installing a child safety seat . An unlocked safety belt retractor
cannot hold the child safety seat in place during normal driving or
in a crash.
• Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in place even if a
child is not sitting in it . A loose child safety seat can fly around
during a sudden stop or in a collision
• If the backrest is not securely latched, the child and the child
restraint will be thrown forward together with the backrest and
will strike parts of the vehicle interior . The child can be seriously
injured or killed .
• Never install rear-facing child safety seats or infant carriers on
the front passenger seat . A child will be seriously injured and can
be killed when the passenger airbag inflates .
• The inflating airbag will hit the child safety seat or infant
carrier with great force and will smash the child safety seat and child against the backrest, door or roof .
• Always install rear -facing child safety seats or infant carriers on
the rear seat.
• Forward-facing child safety seats or infant carriers installed on
the front passenger's seat may interfere with the deployment of
the airbag and cause serious injury to the child.
• It is safer to install a forward-facing child safety seat on the rear
seat .
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS whenever using a child
restrained in a vehicle is being used=> page

• Never try to remove d irt, mud or dust if the surface of the vehicle
is dry . Never use a dry cloth or sponge, since this cou ld scratch your
vehic le's paint or w indows.
• Never wash your car in bright sunlight. Drops of water act as
magnify ing lenses and may damage your paint.
• When you wash your car in the winter : if you rinse your vehicle
with a hose, be careful not to aim the stream of water directly at
locks, or at door or hatch openings -they can freeze shut.
• Never use sponges designed to remove insects, or any kitchen
scouring sponges or similar products. They can damage your paint
finish .
• Never use a dry cloth or sponge to c lean the head ligh ts. Only use
wet cloths or sponges to prevent scratches . It is best to use soapy
water.
For the sake of the environment
In the interest of the environment, the vehicle should on ly be
washed in specia l wash bays. •
Washing your vehicle with a power washer
Cleaning the exterior of your car with a high -p ressure
power washer is safe as l ong as y ou observe a few simple
rules .

-Always follow the operating instructions for the power
washer. - Make sure that the jet o
n the spray hose pro duces a "fan
sha ped sp ray".

When cleaning the vehicle with a power washer always follow the
operating instructions. This applies particula rly to the
operating
pre ssure
and the spraying di stance . Maintain a sufficient distance
to soft materia ls such as rubber hoses and sound/vibration dead ­
ening materia ls (part icularly on the underside of the engine hood).
Do not use a jet which sprays water in a
direct stream or one that
has a
rotating jet.
Water temperature should not exceed 140 °F (60 °Cl.
& WARNING
Never wash tire s with a jet that sp ra ys water in a dir e ct stream .
Thi s could cau se invisible damage to the tire s and we ake n them ,
eve n if th e spra y is from a re lativel y lo ng dis tanc e an d f or a sh o rt
time . Damaged and weakened tire s can f ail and cau se ac cident s
a nd per sona l injur y.

To avoid damaging your vehicle, always make sure that there is
suffic ient distance between the spray head and soft materia ls like
rubber hoses, plastic parts and sound -deadening materials . Never
aim the spray head at the same p oint for a long time . This also
applies to cleaning headlights and painted bumpers . Remember :
the c loser the nozzle is to the surface of the material, the greater the
stress on the mater ial. •
