General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front seats to provide safe
and comfortable support for the driver and the front passenger.
Adjust your seat properly so that:
• you can easily and quickly reach all the switches and controls in
the instrument panel
• your body is properly supported thus reducing physical stress
and fatigue
• the safety belts and airbag system can offer maximum protec­
tion

In the following sections, you will see exactly how you can best
adjust your seats.
There are special regulations and instructions for installing a child safety seat on the front passenger's seat. Always heed the informa ­
tion regarding child safety provided in~
page 157, "Child Safety".
& WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and all other passengers
can result in serious personal injury.
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in motion
- never put your feet on top of the instrument panel, out of the
window or on top of the seat cushion! This applies especially to
the passengers. If your seating position is incorrect you increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an accident. If

the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect this could
result in personal injury or even death.
• It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep
a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cml between themselves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument panel. If you're sitting any closer than this, the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition to this, the front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they can give you maximum
protection.
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly, causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury. If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving, you are out of position. •
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe and relaxed
driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's seat in the
following manner:
- Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that you can
easily push the pedals to the floor while keeping your
knee slightly bent:::>

Adjust the seatback so that when you sit with your back against the seatback, you can still grasp the top of the

the rear lid is closed or if a crash occurs. Always make sure that
rear seat passengers cannot be struck when the rear lid is closed.
• When the rear backrest is folded down do not allow passengers
to occupy the load surface available while the vehicle is in motion.
Vehicle occupants must always be properly restrained.
• Never store any heavy, hard objects on the rear lid cover. This
can be hazardous for rear seat occupants if the rear lid is opened
or if the vehicle is braked suddenly or in the event of a crash.
• Loose items inside the passenger compartment, can fly
forward in a crash or sudden maneuver and injure occupants.
Always store articles in the luggage compartment and use the
fastening eyes, especially when the rear seat backs have been
folded down .
• Read and heed all WARNINGS=:>
page 118, "Proper seating
positions for passengers in rear seats". •
Rear window shelf
You can place light articles of clothing on the rear
window shelf behind the seatback.
& WARNING
Whenever you are driving, do not leave any hard objects on the
rear window shelf or allow your pet to sit on the shelf. These could
become a hazard for vehicle occupants in the event of sudden
braking or a crash!
[ i ] Tips
• A vent slot is located between the shelf and the rear window. Do
not block the vent with any items you may place on the rear window
shelf. •
Do not place bulky items on the rear window shelf as they would
restrict or block the driver's vision through the rear view mirror. •
Luggage compartment
Expanding the luggage compartment
You can increase the available luggage space by folding
the rear seatback down.

-Tilt the seat back until it latches securely~&.
You can fold down both parts of the seatback either separately or
together to increase the size of the luggage compartment.

Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie­downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable mounting straps and properly secure
items to the tie-downs in the luggage compartment to help
prevent items from shifting or flying forward as dangerous
missiles.
• When the rear seat backrest is folded down, always use suit­
able mounting straps and properly secure items to the tie-downs
in the luggage compartment to help prevent items from flying
forward as dangerous missiles into the passenger compartment.
• Never attach a child safety seat tether strap to a tie-down. •

Elastic cargo net
The cargo net prevents light objects from sliding around
in the luggage compartment.

Securing objects to the luggage compartment

- Lay out the cargo net in the luggage compartment. Engage all
four hooks into the fastening eyes=> fig . 68.
- Place objects to be secured under the net.
Mounting hooks
There are two mounting hooks under rear window base inside the
luggage compartment . You can a ttach the cargo ne t as well as
light
objects to these hooks.
The mounting hooks are spring-loaded and will return to their
normal position wh en not in us e.
& WARNING
For strength-related reasons, the mounting hooks can only be
used to secure objects weighing up to 1 O lb. (5 kg). Heavier objects
will not be adequately secured -Risk of injury! •
Luggage compartment cover removal and
installation
The luggage compartment cover prevents people from
looking into the luggage compartment.

Using the cigarette lighter
- Slide the cover open to reach t he cigarette lighter .
- Push the knob=> fig. 73 in .
- Wait unt il the cigarette light er k no b pops out.
Remove the cigarette ligh ter immedi ate ly and use it.
Re insert c igarette lighter into the socket after use .
Connecting an appliance
-Slide th e cover ope n to rea ch t he cigarette light er.
- Remove c iga rette lighter.
Plug in applia nce to be used.
T he socket of the cigarette lighter may be used for 12 -volt appli­
ances with maximum consumption o f up to 100 wa tts, such as a
flash light , small vacuum c leaner, e tc.
Before you purchase any accessories, always read and follow the
information in=>
page 295 , "Additional accessories and parts
replacement" .
& WARNING
Improper use of the cig arett e light er can cau se seriou s inju ry or
start a fire .
• Be car eful when u sing th e cigarette lighter . If you do not pa y
attention to w hat y ou are doing when yo u are u sing the cigar ette
lighter you can burn your self .

• To avoid damaging the socke t, only use plugs that fit properly.
• Only use the cigarette lighter socke t as a power sour ce for ele c­
trical accessories for short durations . Use the sockets in the vehicle
when a power source is needed for longer durations .

• When the engine is off and accessories are still plugged in and
are on, the vehicle battery can still be drained.
• The vehicle battery must not be charged with a s tandard sma ll
cha rger that plugs into the cigarette lighter or ou tlet .•

• Alway s remo ve obje cts from the instrument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around in side the vehicle while driving or
when a ccelerating or when applying the br ake s or when driv ing
around a corner .
• When you are driving m ake sure t hat anything you may h ave
placed in the center con sole or oth er storage lo cations cannot fall
out into the foot wells . In case of sudden braking you would not be
able to brake , depres s the clut ch or accelerate .
• Any articles of clothing that you have hung up must n ot inter ­
fere with the driver' s view. The coa t hook s are de sig ned only for
lightwe ight clothing. Ne ver hang any clothing with hard , po inted
or heavy obj ects in the pockets on the coat ho oks . Dur ing sudden
braki ng or in an ac cident · especiall y if the airbag i s de plo yed ·
these ob je cts could injure any pa ssengers in side the vehicle . •

Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and can be locked.

To close glove compartment
- Push the glove compartment lid upward until the lock
engages.
CD changer*
The CD changer for the Sound System is located in the glove
compartmen t.
& WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury in an accident or sudden stop,
always keep the glove compartment closed while driving. •
Coat hooks
& WARNING
• Hang clothes in such a way that they do not impair the driver's
vision.
• The coat hooks must only be used for lightweight clothing. Do
not leave any heavy or sharp edged objects in the pockets which
may interfere with the side airbag deployment and can cause
personal injury in a crash.
• Do not hang heavy objects on the coat hooks, as they could
cause personal injury in a sudden stop. •

Storage compartment in the front seats
There is a fold-out storage compartment in the front of the
seats.
Opening
- Lift the handle and pull the drawer out .
Closing
- Push the drawer in completely until it latches.

A/C operation [A C)
Switching on A /C
- Press the (AC) button~ page 85, fig. 76 .
Switching A /C off
- Press the (AC) button again.
T he cooling system is switched on during A/C operation -the
heating and ventilation system is controlled auto matica lly.

I f the LED in the switch stays on after A/C operation has been
switched off( = switching the A/C off), there is a fau lt in an air condi­
tioning component. P lease consult an authorized Audi dealer when
there is an operat ing prob lem. •
Using the climate controls economically
E conomical use of the climate c ontrols helps to save fuel.
When climate control is working in cooling mode, engine
performance is reduced and fuel consumption is affected.
To keep the t ime the air cond itioning is on as s hort as
poss ible, you s hould do the following:

- If you would like to save fuel, swit ch the air conditioning
off .
- If you open the windows while driving, switch the air
conditioning off .
- If the veh icle is extremely hot due to the heat of the sun,
briefly open doors and windows.

When you save fuel, you reduce emissions from the vehicle. •
Rear window defogger [ffiJ
The rear window defogger clears the rear window of
condensati on.
- Press the QuJ bu tton~ page 85, fig. 76 to turn the rear
window defogger on and off.
The rear window defogger works on ly when the engine is running.
The indicator light in the button illuminates when the rear window defogger is turned on.
The rear window defogger is switched off automatica lly after 10 to
20 minutes, depending on the outside temperature .
At very low outside temperatures, the rear window defogger can be switched on continuously by pushing the
Qiil button for more than 2
seconds. This remains stored until the ignition is switched off. A
rear window defogger that was switched on also remains stored for
15 minutes after the ignition is switched off.
If the engine is restarted within these 15 minutes, the rear window
defogger is activated for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on outside
temperature . With a vehicle that is parked for a short time, the rear
window defogger does not need to be manually activated again. .,,_

In position => fig . 79 G) both the ignition and engine are off , and the
steering is locked.
To
lo ck the steering after you have removed the ignition key, turn
the steering whee l in either direction until you hear it lock into
place . You should always lock the steering whenever you leave your
vehic le. This makes a vehicle theft even more difficult=>& .
Ignition on 0
If it is difficult to turn the key after you have inserted it into the igni ­
tion lock, turn the steering wheel back and forth. This will take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wil l be able to turn the
key freely and start the engine.
Starting the engine ®
In this position the engine starts . Whi le the engine is starting, the
power supply to the headlights and other electrical consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery power . After the engine
has started, release the key and it will return to position
G) .
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned
back to posi tion
G) . The non -repeat lock prevents you from
damaging the starter when the engine is running.
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lo ck while the veh icle is
moving. The steering wheel will lo ck causing lo ss of control .
• If you have to leave your vehicle -even for just a minute -always
remove the ign ition key and take it with you . This i s especially
i mportant if you are going to l eave children behind in the vehi cle .
The children could start the eng ine or u se other vehi cle control s.
Unsupe rv ised use of vehicle controls (for e xample , power
window s) can cau se serious per sonal injurie s.

then you must leave the key in position

Ignition key safety lock
The ig nition ke y can only be rem oved when the selec tor
le ver i s in the "P" (Par k) p osition.
After switching off the ignition, the ignition key can only be
r emoved from the igni tio n lock w hen the se lector leve r is in the "P"
(Park) position . After you have removed the key, the selector lever is
l ocked and cannot be moved. •

Starting and stopping the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be started with on original Audi key
and the clutch pedal* depressed.
- Set the parking brake.
Move the selector lever to the neutral position (automatic
transmission: selector lever in P or N)

- On vehicles with manual transmission, fully depress the
clutch pedal.
- Turn the ignition key to position

do not depress the gas pedal when starting the engine!
- Let go of the key as soon as the engine starts.
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has been started. This is
due to the hydraulic valves building up the oil pressure . This normal
and no need for concern.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10
seconds and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
& WARNING
Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enclosed area.
Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon monoxide, a color­
less and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled.
• Never leave the engine idling unattended. An unattended
vehicle with a running engine poses a danger of personal injury or
theft.

• Avoid high engine speeds, fast acceleration or heavy engine
loads while the engine is still cold. This could damage the engine.
• The engine cannot be started by pushing or towing the vehicle.
~ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emis­
sions, do not let your vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to drive
off immediately after starting your vehicle. Maintain moderate
speed until the engine is completely warm. Remember, the engine
performs best at operating temperature. •
Stopping the engine
-Turn the ignition key to position G) ~ page 92, fig. 79.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running. With the ignition turned off, you have to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accidents and serious injuries.
• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minutes even
after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat build-up
in the engine
compartment. .,

Do not stop the engine immediately after hard or extended driving.
Keep the engine running for approximately two minutes to prevent
excessive heat build-up. •
Parking brake
Parking brake
When the parking brake is set, it prevents the vehicle from
rolling away unintentionally.

- Pull the parking brake lever all the way up.

If you should drive off with the parking brake still set, a warning tone
will sound and the following will appear in the instrument cluster to remind you to release the parking brake:
Parking brake set
The parking brake warning comes on only after you have driven for longer than 3 seconds and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h).

{CD) (CON) illuminates
when the parking brake is set and you switch on the ignition.
& WARNING
Always release the parking brake completely . A partially engaged
brake will overheat the rear brakes, reduce their effectiveness and
cause excessive wear. This could lead to brake failure and an acci­
dent.

Only after the vehicle has come to complete stop, should you firmly
set the parking brake and either move the gearshift lever into 1st .
gear (manual transmission) or move the selector lever into "P"
(Automatic transmission). •
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are a
few things you should do.
When you park your vehicle, do the following:
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Set the parking brake firmly.
- Switch off the engine.
