Changing the position of
the brake-fluid reservoir
can allow air to penetrate the
brake system.
Do not twist the handlebar
fitting or the handlebars. Attempting to adjust the
brake lever while riding
the motorcycle can lead to
accidents.
Do not attempt to adjust the
brake lever unless the motor-
cycle is at a standstill.

LightsSwitching on the side
lightsThe side lights switch on
automatically when the
ignition is switched on.The side lights place a
strain on the battery.
Do not switch the ignition
on for longer than absolutely
necessary.Switching on the low-
beam headlightThe low-beam headlight
switches on automatically
when you start the engine.
When the engine is not
running you can switch
on the lights by switching on
the ignition and either switch-
ing on the high-beam head-
light or operating the head-
light flasher.
Switch on the high-beam
headlightPress the top part of
switch 1for the high-beam
headlight.
High-beam headlight

high-beam headlight to the
centre position.

Commercially available
adhesive tape will dam-
age the plastic lens of the
light.
Consult a specialist work-
shop, preferably an author-
ised BMW Motorrad dealer, in
order to avoid damaging the
plastic lens of the light.
If the motorcycle is ridden in
a country where the oppos-
ite rule of the road applies, its asymmetric low-beam head-
light will tend to dazzle on-
coming traffic.
Have the headlight set
accordingly by a specialist
workshop, preferably an
authorised BMW Motorrad
dealer.
Headlight beam throw
and spring preloadHeadlight beam throw is gen-
erally kept constant when
spring preload is adjusted to
suit load.
Spring preload adjustment
might not suffice only if
the motorcycle is very
heavily loaded. Under these
circumstances, headlight
beam throw has to be
adjusted to suit the weight
carried by the motorcycle.
Consult a specialist
workshop, preferably an
authorised BMW Motorrad
dealer, if you are unsure
whether the headlight basic
setting is correct.

Automatic Stability
Control ASC
OE
Deactivate the ASC
functionSwitch on the ignition.You have the option of
deactivating the ASC
function while the motorcycle
is on the move.
Press and hold down
ASC button 1. ASC warning light
shows; if self-diagnosis
has not completed the ASC
warning light changes from
flashing to ON.
When the ASC warning light
comes on, release the ASC
button within five seconds.
The ASC function is deac-
tivated. ASC warning light re-
mains ON.
Activate the ASC
functionPress and hold down
ASC button 1.
ASC warning light goes
out; if self-diagnosis has
not completed the ASC warn-
ing light changes from ON to
flashing.
When the ASC warning light
goes out, release the ASC
button within five seconds.
The ASC warning light re-
mains off.

If ASC self-diagnosis did not
complete, the ASC warning
light continues to flash.
The ASC function is activ-
ated.
Instead of pressing the ASC
button, you have the option
of switching the ignition off
and then on again.An ASC fault has
occurred if the ASC
warning light shows when the
motorcycle accelerates to a
speed in excess of 10 km/h
after the ignition was switched
off and then on again.Front and rear seatsRemoving rear seatMake sure the ground is
level and firm and place the
motorcycle on its stand. Turn key

Lift the seat at the rear and
release the key. with OE Seat heating:

Pull the seat to the rear to
release it from its holders.
Place the seat, upholstered
side down, on a clean sur-
face.

Lift the rear of the front seat.
with OE Seat heating:
Disconnect plug 2by
squeezing locking tabs 3
together at top and
bottom. Lift the seat up to remove.
Place the seat, upholstered
side down, on a clean sur-
face.

Pull seat-height adjuster

to the limit position. Push the seat height ad-
juster fully forward and up
or down, as applicable.
Limit position
A: high seat
position.
Limit position B: low seat
position.

If too much pressure is
applied in the forward
direction, there is a danger
that the motorcycle will be
pushed off its stand.

Always make sure that the
motorcycle is stable and
firmly supported.
with OE Seat heating:Connect plug 2. Push the front seat forward
into the seat height
adjuster. Make sure that the
seat is correctly located.
Install the rear seat
If too much pressure is
applied in the forward
direction, there is a danger
that the motorcycle will be
pushed off its stand.
Always make sure that the
motorcycle is stable and
firmly supported. with OE Seat heating:
Connect plug 2.
Slide the rear seat under-
neath the front seat and
push it down firmly at the
rear.

The seat engages with an
audible click.Helmet holderHelmet holder

A motorcycle helmet with chin
strap can be attached to the
helmet holder. If cases are
fitted or if the chin strap is
too short, a steel cable can
be used to secure the motor-
cycle helmet.
Using helmet holderMake sure the ground is
level and firm and place the
motorcycle on its stand.
Removing rear seat ( 65)
The helmet catch can
scratch the panelling.
Make sure the lock is out of
the way when you hook the
helmet into position.
Use the wire rope available
as an optional extra to se-
cure the helmet to helmet
holder 1.
Install the rear seat ( 67)

sired position by pressing
lightly at the appropriate
point close to the rim.
