CAUTION : Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool
or equipment could easily come in contact with exposed electrical terminals. Disconnecting this cable will help
prevent personal injury and damage to the vehicle. The ignition must also be in LOCK unless otherwise noted.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
CAUTION : Brake fluid may irritate eyes and skin. In
case of contact, take the following actions:
S Eye contact – rinse thoroughly with water.
S Skin contact – wash with soap and water.
S Ingestion – consult a physician immediately.
CAUTION : To help avoid personal injury due to poor
braking, DO NOT tap into the vehicle’s brake system
to operate a trailer brake system.
Notice : When fasteners are removed, always reinstall
them at the same location from which they were removed.
If a fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct part
number fastener for that application. If the correct part
number fastener is not available, a fastener of equal size
and strength (or stronger) may be used. Fasteners that
are not reused, and those requiring thread–locking com-
pound will be called out. The correct torque values must
be used when installing fasteners that require them. If the
above procedures are not followed, parts or system dam-
age could result.
Notice : Use only DOT 3 equivalent hydraulic brake fluid.
The use of DOT 5 (silicone) brake fluid is not recom-
mended. Reduced brake performance or durability may
result.
Notice : Avoid spilling brake fluid on any of the vehicle’s
painted surfaces, wiring, cables, or electrical connectors.
Brake fluid will damage paint and electrical connections.
If any fluid is spilled on the vehicle, flush the area with wa-
ter to lessen the damage.
Computer System Service Precautions
Take care to avoid electronic brake control module
(EBCM) circuit overloading. In testing for opens or shorts,
do not ground or apply voltage to any circuit unless
instructed to do so by the diagnostic procedure. Test cir-
cuits only with a high–impedance multimeter. Never re-
move or apply power to any control module with the igni-
tion switch in the ON position. Always turn the ignition to
the OFF position before removing or connecting battery
cables, fuses, or connectors.
General Service Precautions
S Disconnect the EBCM connector before performing
any vehicle welding work using an electric arc weld-
er.
S Do not attempt to disassemble any component des-
ignated as nonserviceable. The hydraulic modulator
and the EBCM can be separated from each other
and replaced separately but cannot be serviced.
They have no replaceable parts, and there is no
access to the components they contain.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
ON–VEHICLE SERVICE
TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL
CHECKING PROCEDURE
Tools Required
DW260–070 Plug Remover/Installer
Inspection Procedure
1. Start the engine and allow the engine to idle for
approximately 5 minutes, or, if possible, drive the
vehicle for a few kilometers(miles) to warm the
transaxle fluid. Check the fluid level when the trans-
axle is over 30°C(86°F).
2. Press the brake pedal and move the shift lever
through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in
each range. Return the shift lever to the park posi-
tion. (Left–Hand Drive Shown, Right–Hand Drive
Similar.)
3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
4. Place a fluid container below the fluid level plug.
CAUTION : Do not remove the fluid level plug if the
transaxle fluid is hot. This may cause injury if the fluid
drains from the plug hole.
5. Remove the fluid level plug using the plug remover/
installer DW260–070. Because the transaxle oper-
ates correctly over a range of levels, fluid may or
may not drain out of the plug hole when the plug is
removed.

CAUTION : Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool
or equipment could easily come in contact with exposed electrical erminals. Disconnecting this cable will help
prevent personal injury and damage to the vehicle. The ignition must also be in LOCK unless otherwise noted.

TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL
CHECKING PROCEDURE
Notice : Check the fluid level when the transaxle tempera-
ture is 70°C~80°C (158°F~176°F).
Notice : During the fluid level check, the selector lever
must be in position P.
Notice : When adding fluid or making a complete fluid
change, always use ISU DEXRON III. Failure to use the
proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid
leaks.
1. Make sure the vehicle is level.
2. Shift into all range from ”P” to ”1” and return to ”P”
with engine idling.
3. Remove the transaxle fluid dipstick and check the
transaxle fluid level.
4. The correct fluid level must be between the HOT
MIN and the HOT MAX notches on the dipstick.
5. If the fluid level is below the MIN notch, add trans-
axle fluid through the fluid filler tube and check for
leaks in the transaxle.
6. If the fluid above the MAX notch, the transaxle is
overfilled. Drain some of the fluid through the fluid
pan drain plug. Check the transaxle fluid level.
FLUID DRAIN PROCEDURE
Draining Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to ”Vehicle
Lifting Procedures,” Section 0B, General Informa-
tion.
2. Place a suitable fluid drainage container under the
transaxle.
3. Remove the fluid drain plug. allow the fluid to drain
completely.
4. Clean the drain plug threads.
5. Install the fluid drain plug.
Tighten
Torque the fluid drain plug to 17 NSm (13 Ib–ft).

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
1. With the vehicle on a level surface and the fluid in
the transaxle cold, remove the filler plug and check
the fluid level. The fluid should come to the bottom
edge of the plug hole.
2. If the level is low, add SAE 80 manual transaxle
fluid through the filler plug hole until the fluid begins
to run out.
3. Reinstall the filler plug and tighten it securely.
4. If the fluid is contaminated, drain the oil after re-
moving the differential gear cover.
SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(LEFT–HAND DRIVE SHOWN,
RIGHT–HAND DRIVE SIMILAR)
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Position the gearshift lever into NEUTRAL.
Important : All the gears must be easy to engage when
the vehicle is stationary, the engine is running, and the
clutch is disengaged.
3. Loosen the rod clamp bolt.
