PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The traction control system helps avoiddrive wheel spin and loss of traction.
If your vehicle begins to slide, the systemapplies the brakes to individual wheelsand, when needed, reduces engine powerat the same time. If the wheels spin whenaccelerating on slippery or loose surfaces,the system reduces engine power in orderto increase traction.
USING TRACTION CONTROL
In certain situations for example, stuck insnow or mud, turning the traction controloff may be beneficial as this allows thewheels to spin with full engine power.Depending on the type of system you haveon your vehicle, you can either turn thesystem off using the information displayor by pressing the button.
Switching the System Off Usingthe Information Display Controls
(If Equipped)
Your vehicle comes with this featurealready enabled. If required, you can switchthis feature off using the informationdisplay controls. See Principle ofOperation (page 149).
Switching the System Off Using aSwitch (If Equipped)
The button is located in the instrumentpanel.
Press the button. You will see a messagein conjunction with an illuminated icon inthe display. Press the button again toreturn the system to normal mode.
When you switch the traction controlsystem off, stability control remains fullyactive.
System Indicator Lights andMessages
WARNING
If a failure has been detected withinthe AdvanceTrac system, thestability control light will illuminatesteadily. Verify that the AdvanceTracsystem was not manually disabled throughthe information display. If the stabilitycontrol light still illuminates steadily, havethe system serviced by an authorizeddealer immediately. Operating your vehiclewith AdvanceTrac disabled could lead toan increased risk of loss of vehicle control,vehicle rollover, personal injury and death.
The stability control lighttemporarily illuminates onengine start-up and flasheswhen a driving condition activates thestability system.
The stability control off lighttemporarily illuminates onengine start-up and stays onwhen you turn the traction control systemoff.
When you turn the traction control systemoff or on, a message appears in theinformation display showing system status.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Electronic Stability Control
WARNING
The system is designed to aid thedriver. It is not intended to replaceyour attention and judgment. You arestill responsible to drive with due care andattention.
The system supports stability when yourvehicle starts to slide away from yourintended path. The system does this bybraking individual wheels and reducingengine torque.
The system also provides an enhancedtraction control function by reducingengine torque if the wheels spin when youaccelerate. This helps to pull away onslippery roads or loose surfaces, andimproves comfort by limiting wheel spin inhairpin bends.

USING STABILITY CONTROL
The system automatically activates whenyou start your vehicle. The system cannotbe completely turned off, but theelectronic stability control system isdisabled when the transmission selectorlever is in position R. You can turn off thetraction control portion of the systemindependently. See Using TractionControl (page 149).

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
The system may not detect objectswith surfaces that absorb reflection.Always drive with due care andattention. Failure to take care may resultin a crash.
To help avoid personal injury, alwaysuse caution when in reverse (R) andwhen using the sensing system.
The system may not detect small ormoving objects, particularly thoseclose to the ground.
Note:Certain add-on devices installedaround the rear fascia such as large trailerhitches, bike or surfboard racks or certainadd-on devices installed around the frontfascia such as license plate brackets orframes, bumper covers, bumper guards orany other device that may block the normaldetection zone of the system, may createfalse beeps.
Note:In these cases the add-on devicesmust be removed in order to prevent thefalse beeps.
Note: Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt. Blockedsensors may affect system accuracy. Donot clean the sensors with sharp objects.
Note:If your vehicle sustains damage tothe bumper or fascia, leaving it misalignedor bent, the sensing zone may be alteredcausing inaccurate measurement ofobstacles or false alarms.
Note:When a trailer is connected to thevehicle, the Rear Sensing System maydetect the trailer and therefore providewarnings. It is suggested that the driverdisables the Rear Sensing System when atrailer is connected to the vehicle to preventthese warnings.
We recommend that you take some timeto get to know the system and itslimitations by reading this section.
The sensing system warns the driver ofobstacles within a certain range of yourvehicle. The system automatically turnson each time you switch the ignition on.
The system may provide display or soundwarnings when the detected obstacle is12 in (30 cm) or less from the bumper.
The system can be switched off throughthe information display menu or from thepop-up message that appears once youshift the transmission into reverse (R). Ifyour vehicle is equipped with a frontsensing system, you can switch the systemoff using the parking aid button. SeeGeneral Information (page 85).
If a fault is present in the system, a warningmessage appears in the informationdisplay and does not allow you to switchthe system on.

REAR PARKING AID
The rear parking aid sensors automaticallyturn on when you shift into reverse (R).
As your vehicle moves closer to theobstacle, the rate of the audible warningincreases. When the obstacle is less than11.81 in (30 cm) the warning soundscontinuously. If the system detects anobject farther than 11.81 in (30 cm) fromthe corners of the bumper, the tone soundsfor only three seconds. If the systemdetects an approaching object the warningsounds again.

•Vehicles without spare wheel: camerais located on swing gate applique.
•Vehicles with spare wheel: camera ismounted to the spare wheel bracket.
Using the Rear View CameraSystem
The rear view camera system displayswhat is behind your vehicle when you placethe transmission in reverse (R).
The system uses three types of guides tohelp you see what is behind your vehicle:
•Active guidelines: Show the intendedpath of your vehicle when reversing.
•Fixed guidelines: Show the actual pathyour vehicle is moving in while reversingin a straight line. This can be helpfulwhen backing into a parking space oraligning your vehicle with anotherobject behind you.
•Centerline: Helps align the center ofyour vehicle with an object (forexample, a trailer).
Note:If the transmission is in reverse (R)and the luggage compartment is ajar, norear view camera features are displayed.
Note:If the image comes on while thetransmission is not in reverse (R), have thesystem checked as soon as possible.
Note:When towing, the camera only seeswhat is being towed behind your vehicle.This might not provide adequate coverageas it usually provides in normal operationand some objects might not be seen. Insome vehicles, the guidelines may disappearonce the trailer tow connector is engaged.
Note:The camera may not operatecorrectly under the following conditions:
•Nighttime or dark areas if one or bothreverse lamps are not operating.
•The camera's view is obstructed bymud, water or debris. Clean the lenswith a soft, lint-free cloth andnon-abrasive cleaner.
•The rear of your vehicle is hit ordamaged, causing the camera tobecome misaligned.
Access the rear view camera systemsettings through the information display.See General Information (page 85).
After changing a system setting, thedisplay screen shows a preview of theselected features.

Blocked Sensors
The sensors are behind the rear bumperon both sides of your vehicle.
Note:Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt.
Note:Do not cover the sensors with bumperstickers, repair compound or other objects.
Note:Blocked sensors could affect systemperformance.
If the sensors are blocked, a message mayappear in the information display. SeeInformation Messages (page 88). Thealert indicators remain illuminated but thesystem does not alert you.
System Errors
If the system detects a fault, a warninglamp illuminates and a message displays.See Information Messages (page 88).
Switching the System Off and On
You can switch the system off using theinformation display. See GeneralInformation (page 85). When you switchthe system off, a warning lamp illuminatesand a message displays. When you switchthe system on or off, the alert indicatorsflash twice.
Note:The system remembers the lastsetting when you start your vehicle.
Note:The system may not correctly operatewhen towing a trailer. For vehicles with atrailer tow module and tow bar approvedby us, the system turns off when you attacha trailer. For vehicles with an aftermarkettrailer tow module or tow bar, werecommend that you switch the system offwhen you attach a trailer.
To permanently switch the system off,contact an authorized dealer.
CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT (If
Equipped)
WARNINGS
Do not use the cross traffic alertsystem as a replacement for usingthe interior and exterior mirrors orlooking over your shoulder before reversingout of a parking space. The cross trafficalert system is not a replacement forcareful driving.
The system may not operateproperly during severe weatherconditions, for example snow, ice,heavy rain and spray. Always drive withdue care and attention. Failure to take caremay result in a crash.
The system is designed to alert you ofvehicles approaching from the sides whenyou shift into reverse (R).
Using the Cross Traffic AlertSystem
The system is designed to detect vehiclesthat approach with a speed up to 37 mph(60 km/h). Coverage decreases when thesensors are partially, mostly or fullyobstructed. Slowly reversing helps increasethe coverage area and effectiveness.

Zone coverage also decreases whenparking at narrow angles. The sensor onthe left-hand side is mostly obstructed andzone coverage on that side is severelyreduced.
System Lights, Messages andAudible Alerts
When the system detects a vehicle, anindicator illuminates in the exterior mirroron the side the approaching vehicle iscoming from. A tone sounds and amessage appears in the informationdisplay.
Note:In exceptional conditions, the systemcould alert you even when there is nothingin the detection zone, for example a vehiclepassing in the distance.
Blocked Sensors

System Limitations
The system may not correctly operatewhen any of the following occur:
•The sensors are blocked.
•Adjacently parked vehicles or objectsare obstructing the sensors.
•Vehicles approach at speeds greaterthan 37 mph (60 km/h).
•The vehicle speed is greater than 7 mph(12 km/h).
•You reverse out of an angled parkingspace.
System Errors
If the system detects a fault a messagedisplays. See Information Messages(page 88).
Switching the System Off and On
You can temporarily switch the system offusing the information display. SeeInformation Messages (page 88). Whenyou switch system off, a message displays.See Information Messages (page 88).
Note:The system turns on each time youswitch the ignition on and you shift intoreverse (R). If you temporarily switch thesystem off, it turns on the next time youswitch the ignition on.

TOWING A TRAILER
WARNINGS
Towing trailers beyond the maximumrecommended gross trailer weightexceeds the limit of your vehicle andcould result in engine damage,transmission damage, structural damage,loss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover andpersonal injury.
Do not exceed the GVWR or theGAWR specified on the certificationlabel.
Note: See Towing a Trailer (page 171).
Your vehicle may have electrical items,such as fuses or relays, related to towing.See Fuses (page 193).
Your vehicle's load capacity designationis by weight, not by volume, so you cannotnecessarily use all available space whenloading a vehicle or trailer.
Towing a trailer places an extra load onyour vehicle's engine, transmission, axle,brakes, tires and suspension. Inspect thesecomponents periodically during, and after,any towing operation.
Load Placement
To help minimize how trailer movementaffects your vehicle when driving:
•Load the heaviest items closest to thetrailer floor.
•Load the heaviest items centeredbetween the left and right side trailertires.
•Load the heaviest items above thetrailer axles or just slightly forwardtoward the trailer tongue. Do not allowthe final trailer tongue weight to goabove or below 10-15% of the loadedtrailer weight.
•Select a ball mount with the correctrise or drop and load capacity. Whenboth the loaded vehicle and trailer areconnected, the trailer frame should belevel, or slightly angled down towardyour vehicle, when viewed from theside.
When driving with a trailer or payload, aslight takeoff vibration or shudder may bepresent due to the increased payloadweight. Additional information regardingproper trailer loading and setting yourvehicle up for towing is located in anotherchapter of this manual. See Load Limit(page 165).

Note:This feature does not prevent trailersway, but reduces it once it begins.

This feature applies your vehicle brakes atindividual wheels and if necessary, reducesengine power. If the trailer begins to sway,the traction control warning lamp flashesand a message will appear in theinformation display. Slow your vehicledown, pull safely to the side of the roadand check for correct load distribution.See Load Carrying (page 163).

ESSENTIAL TOWING CHECKS
Follow these guidelines for safe towing:
•Do not tow a trailer until you drive yourvehicle at least 1,000 mi (1,600 km).
•Consult your local motor vehicle lawsfor towing a trailer.
•See the instructions included withtowing accessories for the properinstallation and adjustmentspecifications.
•Service your vehicle more frequently ifyou tow a trailer. See your scheduledmaintenance information.
•If you use a rental trailer, follow theinstructions the rental agency givesyou.
You can find information on loadspecification terms found on the tire labeland Safety Compliance label as well asinstructions on calculating your vehicle'sload in the Load Carrying chapter. SeeLoad Limit (page 165).
Remember to account for the trailertongue weight as part of your vehicle loadwhen calculating the total vehicle weight.
Hitches
Do not use a hitch that either clamps ontothe bumper or attaches to the axle.
Distribute the trailer load so 10-15% of thetotal trailer weight is on the tongue.
Safety Chains
Note:Never attach safety chains to thebumper.
Always connect the safety chains to thehook retainers of your vehicle hitch.
To connect the trailer’s safety chains, crossthem under the trailer tongue and allowenough slack for turning tight corners. Donot allow the chains to drag on the ground.
Trailer Brakes
WARNING
Do not connect a trailer's hydraulicbrake system directly to yourvehicle's brake system. Your vehiclemay not have enough braking power andyour chances of having a collision greatlyincrease.
Electric brakes and manual, automatic orsurge-type trailer brakes are safe if youinstall them properly and adjust them tothe manufacturer's specifications. Thetrailer brakes must meet local and federalregulations.
The rating for the tow vehicle's brakingsystem operation is at the gross vehicleweight rating, not the gross combinedweight rating.
Separate functioning brake systemsare required for safe control of towedvehicles and trailers weighing morethan 1500 pounds (680 kilograms)when loaded.
Trailer Lamps
WARNING
Never connect any trailer lamp wiringto the vehicle's tail lamp wiring; thismay damage the electrical systemresulting in fire. Contact your authorizeddealer as soon as possible for assistancein proper trailer tow wiring installation.Additional electrical equipment may berequired.
Trailer lamps are required on most towedvehicles. Make sure all running lights, brakelights, turn signals and hazard lights areworking.

TRANSPORTING THE VEHICLE
If you need to have your vehicle towed,contact a professional towing service or,if you are a member of a roadsideassistance program, your roadsideassistance service provider.
We recommend towing your vehicle witha wheel lift and dollies or flatbedequipment. Do not tow with a slingbelt.Ford Motor Company has not approved aslingbelt towing procedure.
It is acceptable to tow a front-wheel drivevehicle from the front if using proper wheellift equipment to raise the front wheels offthe ground. When towing in this manner,the rear wheels can remain on the ground.
Front-wheel drive vehicles must have thefront wheels placed on a two-wheel towdolly when towing your vehicle from therear using wheel lift equipment. Thisprevents damage to the transmission.
Towing a four-wheel drive vehicle requiresthat all wheels be off the ground, such asusing a wheel lift and dollies or flatbedequipment. This prevents damage to thetransmission, four-wheel drive system andvehicle.
TOWING THE VEHICLE ON
FOUR WHEELS
Emergency Towing
If your vehicle becomes inoperable(without access to wheel dollies,car-hauling trailer, or flatbed transportvehicle), it can be flat-towed (all wheelson the ground, regardless of the powertrainand transmission configuration) under thefollowing conditions:
•Your vehicle is facing forward fortowing in a forward direction.
•Place the transmission in position N. Ifyou cannot move the transmission intoN, you may need to override it. SeeTransmission (page 138).
•Maximum speed is 35 mph (56 km/h).
•Maximum distance is 50 mi (80 km).
WARNING
If your vehicle has a steering wheellock make sure the ignition is in theaccessory or on position when beingtowed.
Recreational Towing
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering the vehicle. SeeClimate Control (page 98).
