TAILGATE PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: It is extremelydangerous to ride in a cargo area, insideor outside of a vehicle. In a crash, peopleriding in these areas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed. Do not allowpeople to ride in any area of your vehiclethat is not equipped with seats andseatbelts. Make sure everyone in yourvehicle is in a seat and properly using aseatbelt. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury ordeath.
OPENING THE TAILGATE
OPENING THE TAILGATE FROMINSIDE YOUR VEHICLE
The vehicle must be in park (P) to operatethe tailgate.
Press the button on theinstrument panel twice withinthree seconds.
OPENING THE TAILGATE FROMOUTSIDE YOUR VEHICLE
1.Unlock the vehicle with the remotecontrol or power door unlock control.
Note:If an intelligent access transmitter iswithin 3 ft (1 m) of the tailgate, the tailgateunlocks when you press the tailgate releasebutton.
2.Press the button in the top of thetailgate handle twice within threeseconds.
OPENING THE TAILGATE USINGTHE REMOTE CONTROL
Press the remote control buttontwice within three seconds.
REMOVING AND INSTALLING
THE TAILGATE
WARNING: Always properly securecargo to prevent shifting cargo or cargofalling from the vehicle. Failure to do socould result in compromised vehiclestability and serious personal injury tovehicle occupants or others.
WARNING: The tailgate is heavy.Removal of the tailgate requires twoadults. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or propertydamage.
Note:Skip to Step 4 if your vehicle doesnot have power door locks.

1.Unlatch the tailgate.
2.Disconnect the power door locks in-lineconnector. It is under the pickup boxon the right-hand side of the vehiclenear the spare tire.
3.Install a protective cap on the in-lineconnector portion that remains underthe pickup box.
Note: A protective cap should be in theglove compartment.
4.Partially lower the tailgate. Carefullyfeed the tailgate harness up throughthe gap between the pickup box andthe bumper and place it out of the wayunder the pickup box.
5.Lower the tailgate.
6.Use a screwdriver to gently pry thespring clip on each connector past thehead of the support screw. Disconnectthe cable.
7.Disconnect the other cable.
8.Lift the tailgate to 45 degrees from thehorizontal position.
9.Lift the right-hand side off its hinge.
10.Lift the tailgate to 80 degrees fromthe horizontal position.
11.Remove the tailgate from theleft-hand side hinge by sliding it tothe right.
12.Install the tailgate in reverse order.
TAILGATE STEP (IF EQUIPPED)
ACCESSING THE TAILGATE STEP
Integrated Tailgate Step
1.Lower the tailgate.
2.Push the button in the center of thestep molding. The step pops outslightly.
3.Pull the step out fully. Lower the stepto its lowest position.

4.Pull the yellow handle stop backwardout of the tailgate until it fully extends.
5.To lock the handle in place, rotate thehandle up from the horizontal to thevertical position until you hear a click.
Note:Do not tow with the step or grabhandle.
Replace the slip resistance tape or grabhandle molding if it appears as worn ordamaged.
To reduce the risk of falling:
•Only operate the step when yourvehicle is on a level surface.
•Only operate the step in areas withsufficient lighting.
•Make sure you use the grab handlewhen climbing on the step.
•Do not use the step with bare feet.
•Make sure the step is clean before use.
•Keep the step load below the totalmaximum load of 350 lb (159 kg).
STOWING THE TAILGATE STEP
1.Press the yellow button on the handleto lower and then press the yellowlever at the bottom of the handle tounlock. Rotate the handle down fromthe vertical to the horizontal positionand push it into the tailgate.
2.Rotate the step up until it is horizontal,then push it back into the tailgate untilthe step is secure.
Note:Make sure to close and fully latch thestep before moving your vehicle. Do notdrive with the step or grab handle open.
Note:The power tailgate cannot close ifthe step is open. A warning messageappears and a tone sounds. After stowingthe step the power close function isrestored.
BED EXTENDER (IF EQUIPPED)
BED EXTENDER PRECAUTIONS
Note:Do not use the bed extender whendriving off road.
Note:Make sure to engage the locking pinsand knobs fully before driving your vehicle.
Note:Make sure to secure all cargo.
Note:Do not exceed 150 lb (68 kg) on thetailgate when your vehicle is moving.
Note:Do not keep the bed extender in thetailgate mode when you are not using it forrestraining cargo. Always keep the bedextender in the grocery mode or the stowedposition with the tailgate closed.

USING THE BED EXTENDER
1.Pull the locking pin toward the centerof your vehicle.
2.Open the latches to release the panels.
3.Rotate the panels toward the tailgate.Repeat steps 1-3 on the other side ofyour vehicle.

4.Connect the two panels. Rotate bothknobs one-quarter turn clockwise tosecure the panels.
5.Insert the latch rod into the tailgatehole.
6.Engage both sides of the locking pinsinto their holes in the pick-up box.
Grocery Mode
1.Follow steps 1-4.
2.Before engaging the locking pins, rotatethe panels away from the tailgate.
3.Engage both sides of the locking pinsinto their holes in the pick-up box.
4.Close the tailgate.
TAILGATE WORK SURFACE (IF
EQUIPPED)
The tailgate work surface is a durable andfunctional surface on the inside portion ofyour tailgate you can use to performvarious tasks.
To use the tailgate work surface, fold downthe tailgate.

You must clear the message using the steering wheel controls.Repeatedly closing the tailgate will not clear the message.

Why won't my tailgate open?
Make sure the transmission is in park(P), ensure nothing is obstructing thetailgate path and or causing resistance(tonneau cover or other aftermarketaccessories, freezing conditions orbeing parked downhill). If you havecontinued issues, the battery voltagemay be low or other system issues.See an authorized dealer.

PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT
SYSTEM
WHAT IS THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM
The passive anti-theft system preventssomeone from starting the vehicle with anincorrectly coded key.
Note:Do not leave a duplicate coded keyin your vehicle. Always take the keys andlock all the doors when leaving your vehicle.
HOW DOES THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM WORK
The passive anti-theft system arms whenyou switch the ignition off.
It disarms when the ignition is switched onwith a correctly coded key.
Note:The system is not compatible withnon-Ford aftermarket remote start systems.
Note:Do not leave a duplicate coded keyin your vehicle. Always take the keys andlock all doors when leaving your vehicle.
ANTI-THEFT ALARM SYSTEM
(IF EQUIPPED)
WHAT IS THE ANTI-THEFT ALARMSYSTEM
The anti-theft alarm system warns you ofan unauthorized entry to your vehicle.
HOW DOES THE ANTI-THEFTALARM SYSTEM WORK
When armed, the anti-theft alarm istriggered in any of the following ways:
•If someone opens a door, the tailgateor the hood without a correctly codedkey or remote control.
•If you turn the power on without acorrectly coded key.
•If the interior sensors detect movementinside your vehicle.
•If the inclination sensors detect anattempt to raise your vehicle.
•If someone disconnects the vehiclebattery or the battery backup alarm.
•If someone disconnects the trailer. SeeConnecting a Trailer (page 414).
Any further attempts to carry out one ofthe above, sounds the alarm again.
If the anti-theft alarm is triggered, thealarm horn sounds for 30 seconds and theturn signals flash for five minutes.
WHAT IS THE PERIMETER ALARM
The perimeter alarm is designed to detectunauthorized access to your vehicle.
WHAT ARE THE INTERIORSENSORS (If Equipped)
The interior sensors are designed to detectany movement inside your vehicle.
The interior sensors are in the overheadconsole.
Note:Do not cover the interior sensors.

WHAT ARE THE INCLINATIONSENSORS (If Equipped)
The inclination sensor is designed to detectan attempt to raise your vehicle, forexample to remove a wheel or to tow itaway.
ARMING THE ANTI-THEFT ALARMSYSTEM
The alarm is ready to arm when yourvehicle is switched off.
Lock your vehicle with your remote controlto arm the alarm.
DISARMING THE ANTI-THEFTALARM SYSTEM
Disarm the alarm by performing any of thefollowing actions:
•Unlock the doors or luggagecompartment with the remote control.
•Switch your vehicle on or start yourvehicle.
ANTI-THEFT ALARM SYSTEM
SETTINGS (IF EQUIPPED)
WHAT ARE THE ALARM SECURITYLEVELS
You can select two levels of alarm security,motion sensors on and motion sensors off.
Motion Sensors On
Motion sensors on is the standard setting.
In motion sensors on, all equipped sensorsare on when you arm the alarm.
Note:Do not arm the alarm with motionsensors on if passengers, animals or othermoving objects are inside your vehicle.
Motion Sensors Off
In motion sensors off, the interior sensorand the inclination sensor are off when youarm the alarm.
All the other equipped sensors activatewhen you arm the alarm in this mode.
SETTING THE ALARM SECURITYLEVEL
1.Press Settings on the touchscreen.
2.Press Vehicle.
3.Press Alarm System.
4.Press Motion Sensors.
5.Press a setting.
WHAT IS ASK ON EXIT
You can choose which level of security yourequire after you switch the ignition off.
Note:If you do not choose a setting, thesystem defaults to all sensors.
SWITCHING ASK ON EXIT ON ANDOFF
1.Press Settings on the touchscreen.
2.Press Vehicle.
3.Press Alarm System.
4.Switch Ask on Exit on or off.
