The addition of Motorcraft Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets, VC- 6, darkens Motorcraft
Premium Gold Engine Coolant from yellow to golden tan.
zAdd Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4- A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or
equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE- M97B44-A (green color), or Motorcraft Premium
Gold Engine Coolant VC-7- A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B51- A1 (yellow
color). Use the same coolant that was drained from the cooling system. Do not mix coolant
types.
z Do not add/mix orange-colored Motorcraft Speciality Orange Engine Coolant VC- 2 or equivalent
meeting Ford specification WSS- M97B44-D. Mixing coolants may degrade the coolant's
corrosion protection.
z Do not add alcohol, methanol, brine, or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol
antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing.
z Do not mix with recycled coolant unless it meets the requirements of Ford specification ESE-
M97B44- A or WSS-M97B51- A1. Not all coolant recycling processes meet these Ford

1. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system:
1. Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4- A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10)
or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44- A (green color), or Motorcraft
Premium Gold Engine Coolant VC-7- A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-
M97B51- A1 (yellow color). Use the same coolant that was drained from the cooling
system. Do not mix coolant types.
2. Do not add/mix orange-colored Motorcraft Speciality Orange Engine Coolant VC- 2 or
equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44- D. Mixing coolants may degrade the

2. Fill the degas bottle. Use Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4- A (in Oregon VC-5, in
Canada CXC- 10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44- A (green color), or
Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant VC-7- A or equivalent meeting Ford specification
WSS- M97B51- A1 (yellow color). Use the same coolant that was drained from the cooling
system. Do not mix coolant types.
3. Start the engine and allow to run until coolant circulation is observed in the intercooler degas bottle. Absence of circulation indicates air is trapped in the system.
zTurn the engine off.
4. Add coolant as needed. Use Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC -4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in
Canada CXC- 10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44- A (green color), or
Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant VC-7- A or equivalent meeting Ford specification
WSS- M97B51- A1 (yellow color). Use the same coolant that was drained from the cooling
system. Do not mix coolant types.
5. Repeat the above procedure to make sure all entrapped air is released. Klj . 2 ba

7. Inspect for normal burning.
zThis can be identified by light tan or gray deposits on the firing tip.
8. Inspect for pre- ignition.
z This can be identified by melted electrodes and possibly a blistered insulator. Metallic
deposits on the insulator indicate engine damage.
z Install a new spark plug.
9. Inspect for overheating. zThis can be identified by a white or light gray insulator with small black or gray brown
spots and a bluish- burnt appearance of the electrodes.
z This may be caused by engine overheating, the wrong type of fuel, loose spark plugs, too
hot a plug, low fuel pump pressure or incorrect ignition timing.
z Install a new spark plug. Klj . 3 ba

8. Inspect for overheating.
zThis can be identified by a white or light gray insulator with small black or gray brown

z This may be caused by engine overheating, wrong type of fuel, loose spark plugs, too hot
a plug, low fuel pump pressure or incorrect ignition timing.
z Install a new spark plug.
9. Inspect for fused spot deposits. zThis can be identified by melted or spotty deposits resembling bubbles or blisters.
z This may be caused by sudden acceleration.
z Clean the spark plug.

PINPOINT TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE (TFT)

Check to make sure the transmission harness
connector is fully seated, pins are fully engaged in
connector and in good condition before proceeding.
z Connect the diagnostic tool.
z Key in ON position.
z Select Diagnostic Data Link.
z Select PCM.
z Select PID/Data Monitor and Record.
z Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic
tool: PIDs; TFT, TFTV.
z Does the vehicle enter PID/Data Monitor and
Record? Yes
GO to
B2 .
No
REPEAT procedure to enter PID. If
vehicle did not enter PID, REFER
to the Powertrain

While monitoring the TFT PIDs, carry out the
following test: If transmission is cold, run transmission
to warm it up. If transmission is warm, allow
transmission to cool down.

cooled or does the TFT or TFTV drop in and out

If the TFT PIDs increase as the

DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY OF SUBASSEMBLIES
Torque Converter
1. A new or remanufactured torque converter must be installed if one or more of the following statements is true:
zA torque converter malfunction has been determined based on complete diagnostic
procedures.
z Converter stud or studs, impeller hub or bushing are damaged.
z Discoloration (due to overheating).
z The torque converter is found to be out of specification when carrying out one of the
following torque converter checks:
„One- Way Clutch Check
„ End Play Check
„ Stator to Turbine Interference Check
„ Stator to Impeller Interference Check
„ Torque Converter Leak Check
z Evidence of transmission assembly or fluid contamination due to the following
transmission or converter failure modes:
„Major metallic failure.
„ Multiple clutches or clutch plate failures.
„ Sufficient component wear which results in metallic contamination.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
Transmission Cooling
Inspection and Verification
WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap under any conditions while the engine is
operating. Failure to follow these instructions could result in personal injury and/or damage to
the cooling system or engine. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the
radiator, use extreme care when removing the radiator cap from a hot radiator. Wait until the
engine has cooled, then wrap a thick cloth around the radiator cap and turn it slowly to the first
stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are certain
all the pressure has been released, press down on the radiator cap (with a cloth), turn and
remove.
The transmission fluid cooler is integral to the radiator (8005). Whenever leaks or damage to the
radiator are found, install an entire new radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303 - 03A or
Section 303 - 03B .
