If you’re tired, pull off the road in a safe place and rest.

Night Vision
No one can see as well at night as
in the daytime. But as we get older
these differences increase.
A 50-year-old driver may require at least twice as
much light to see the same thing at night as a 20-year-old.
What you do in the daytime can also affect your night vision.\
For example, if
you spend the day in bright sunshine you are wise to wear sunglasses. Your
eyes will have less trouble adjusting to night.
But if you’re driving, don’t wear sunglasses at night. Th\
ey may cut down on
glare from headlights, but they also make a lot of things inv\
isible that should
remain visible-such as parked cars, obstacles, pedestrians, or e\
ven trains
blocking railway crossings. You may want
to put on your sunglasses after you
have pulled into a brightly-lighted service or refreshment area.\
Eyes shielded
from that glare may adjust more quickly to darkness back on t\
he road. But
be sure to remove your sunglasses before you leave the service\
area.
You can be temporarily blinded by approaching lights.
It can take a second or
two, or even several seconds, for your eyes to readjust to the dark. When
you are faced with severe glare (as from a driver who doesn’\
t lower the high
beams, or a vehicle with misaimed headlights), slow down a little. Avoid\
staring directly into the approaching lights. If there is a line of opposing
traffic, make occasional glances over the line of headlights to make certain
that one of the vehicles isn’t starting to move into your lane. Once you are
past the bright lights, give your eyes time to readjust before\
resuming speed.
High Beams
If the vehicle approaching you has its high beams on, signal by \
flicking yours
to high and then back to low beam. This is the usual signal to lower the
headlight beams.
If the other driver still doesn’t lower the beams, resist the
temptation to put your high beams on. This only makes
two half-blinded
drivers.
On a freeway, use your high beams only in remote areas where \
you won’t impair approaching drivers. In some places, like cities, using \
high beams is
illegal.
When you follow another vehicle on a freeway or highway, use \
low beams.
True, most vehicles now have day-night mirrors that enable the \
driver to
reduce glare. But outside mirrors are not
of this type and high beams from
behind can bother the driver ahead.

If there is no curb when you’re parking uphill, turn the wheels to the right.
If there is no curb when you’re parking uphill on the left side of a one-way
street, your wheels should be turned to the left.
Torque Lock (Automatic Transmission)
If you are parking on a hill and you don’t shift your tra\
nsmission into P
(Park) properly, the weight of the vehicle may put too much force on the
parking pawl in the transmission. You may find it difficult to pull the shift lever
out of
P (Park). This is called “torque lock.” To prevent torque lock, always
be sure to shift into
P (Park) before you leave the driver’s seat. To find out
how, see “Shifting Into
P (Park)” in the Index.
When you are ready to drive, move the shift lever out
of P (Park) BEFORE
you release the parking brake.
If “torque lock” does occur, you may need to have another vehicle push
yours a little uphill to take some of the pressure from the transmission,
so
you can pull the shift lever out of P (Park).

What’s the worst time for this? “Wet ice.’’ Very cold snow or ice can be slick
and hard to drive on. But wet ice can be even more trouble because it may
offer the least traction of all. You can get “wet ice” when it’s about freezing
(32°F; 0°C) and freezing rain begins to fall. Try to avoid driving on wet ice
until salt and sand crews can get there.
Whatever the condition-smooth ice, packed, blowing or loose snow-drive
with caution. Accelerate gently. Try not to break the fragile \
traction.
If you
accelerate
too fast, the drive wheels will spin and polish the surface under \
the tires even more.
Your anti-lock brakes improve your ability
to make a hard stop on a slippery
road. Even though you have the anti-lock braking system, you’\
ll want to begin
stopping sooner than you would on dry pavement. See “Anti-lo\
ck‘’ in the Index.
Allow greater following distance on any slippery road.
Watch for slippery spots. The road might be fine until you hi\
t a spot
that’s covered with ice. On an otherwise clear road, ice patches may
appear in shaded areas where the sun can’t reach: around clumps of
trees, behind buildings,
or under bridges. Sometimes the surface of a
curve
or an overpass may remain icy when the surrounding roads are
clear.
If you see a patch of ice ahead of you, brake before you are on
it. Try not to brake while you’re actually on the ice, and\
avoid sudden
steering maneuvers.

If You’re Caught in a Blizzard

If you are stopped by heavy snow, you could be in a serious situation. You
should probably stay with your vehicle unless you know for sur\
e that you are near help and you can hike through the snow. Here are some t\
hings
to do to
summon help and keep yourself and your passengers safe: Turn o\
n your
hazard flashers. Tie a red cloth to your vehicle to alert pol\
ice that you’ve
been stopped by the snow. Put on extra clothing or wrap a bl\
anket around
you. If you have no blankets or extra clothing, make body ins\
ulators from
newspapers, burlap bags, rags, floor mats-anything you can wrap \
around
yourself or tuck under your clothing
to keep warm.
You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful,
I Snow can trap exhaust gases under your vehicle. This can cause\
deadly
CO (carbon monoxide) gas to get inside. CO could overcome
you and kill you. You can’t see
it or smell it, so you might not know
it is in your vehicle. Clear away snow from around the base of your
vehicle, especially any that
is blocking your exhaust pipe. And check
around again from time to time
to be sure snow doesn’t collect there.
Open a window just a little on the side of the vehicle that’\

Power Winches

If you wish to use a power winch on your vehicle, only use it \
when your
vehicle is stationary or anchored.

NOTICE
Use the regular brakes, set the parking brake or block the wh\
eels to keep
your vehicle from rolling.
Power rake-off (PTO)
Before using a power take-off, refer to the manufacturer’s or installer’s
instructions.
To engage a power take-off:
1. Set ths parking brake.
2. Shift the transmission into N (Neutral).
3. Hold the clutch pedal down and engage the power take-off.

If you are going to drive the vehicle, shift the transmission int\
o the gear
you want. Then shift the transfer case into the range you wan\
t
(if you
have four-wheel-drive), apply the regular brakes and release th\
e parking
brake.
When you release the clutch, the power take-off will start.
4. Release the clutch (and the regular brakes) as you normally \
would.

Towing Your Vehicle
Try to have a GM dealer or a professional towing service tow your vehicle.
They can provide the right equipment and know how to tow it without dam-
age.
If your vehicle has been changed since it was factory-new, by adding things
like fog lamps, aero skirting, or special tires and wheels, th\
ese things could
be damaged during towing.
Before you do anything, turn on the hazard warning flashers.
When you call, tell the towing service:
That your vehicle has rear-wheel drive, or that it has the four-wheel drive
option.
The make, model, and year of your vehicle.
Whether you can move the shift lever for the transmission and \
transfer case,
if you have one.
If there was an accident, what was damaged.
I A To help avoid injury to you or others:
Never let passengers ride in a vehicle that is being towed.
Never tow faster than safe or posted speeds.
Never tow with damaged parts not fully secured.
Never get under your vehicle after it has been lifted by the tow
truck.
Always use separate safety chains on each side when towing a
vehicle.
When your vehicle is being towed, have the ignition key
off. The steering
wheel should be clamped in a straight-ahead position, with a clamping device
designed for towing service.
Do not use the vehicle’s steering column lock for
this. The transmission and transfer case,
if you have one, should be in Neu-
tral and the parking brake released.
If you have a two-wheel drive vehicle, don’t have your vehicle \
towed on the
rear wheels, unless you must. If the vehicle must be towed on\
the rear
wheels, don’t go more than
35 mph (56 km/h) or farther than 50 miles (80
krn) or your transmission will be damaged. If these limits must be exceeded,
then the rear drive wheels have to be supported on a dolly.

Jack Storage
Your jack and wheel ratchet are behind the passenger seat. Turn. th\

nut counterclockwise and remove the cover
if there is one.
Spare Tire

Your spare tire is either underneath the rear of the vehicle, or mounted to the
inside of the bed on the driver’s side.
If you have a chassis cab, refer to the
information from the body supplier/installer.
The spare tire
is a full size tire, like the other tires’ on your vehicle.

To remove the spare tire:
1. Turn the nut counterclockwise until it comes off.
, 2. Pull the tire off of the bolt and remove it from the bed.

Start with the- jack, the jack handle and the ratchet. If the flat tire is on the
rear
of the vehicle, you’ll need the jack handle extensions also.

Attach the jack handle (and jack handle extensions, if needed) to the jack. With
the
UP marking on the ratchet facing you, rotate the ratchet clockwise. That will
lift the jack head a little. Before raising the vehicle, do the fo\
llowing things.
Put your spare tire near the flat tire.
Remove the wheel trim.

If there is a wheel cover, remove it by using the flat end of the wheel
wrench.
Pry along the edge of the wheel cover until it comes off. Be
careful; the rim edges may be sharp. Don't
try to remove it with your bare
hands.

Raising your vehicle with the jack improperly positioned will damage the
vehicle
or may allow the vehicle to fall off the jack. Be sure to fit the jack
lift head into the proper location before raising your vehicle.
Front Rear

Raise the vehicle by rotating the ratchet clockwise. Make sure \
the UP
marking faces you. Use the jack handle extensions if the flat tire is on the
rear
of the vehicle. Raise the vehicle far enough off the ground so there is
enough
room for the spare tire to fit.
