EFFECTIVE BRAKING
HPC141A1-E Braking system performance and fric- tion material life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The follow- ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients,
use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimise the possibil- ity of brake fade occurring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the trailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist the vehicle braking system.
o Use only genuine Hyundai replace- ment brake pads and shoes to en-sure consistent friction characteris-tics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water (e.g.
fording), the brakes may becomewet and performance reduced. Al- ways check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry thebrakes by lightly depressing the brake pedal several times whilst driv- ing slowly.LIMITED-SLIP DIFFEREN- TIAL (LSD)
D190A01HP-EAT (Not all models) A limited-slip differential, if equipped, is for the rear wheel differential only.The features of this limited-slip differ- ential are described below: Just as with a conventional differential,the wheel on one side is allowed to turn at a different speed from the wheel on the other side when the vehicle iscornering. The difference between the limited-slip differential and a conven- tional differential is that if the wheel onone side of the vehicle loses traction, a greater amount of torque is applied to the rear wheel on the other side toimprove traction.
WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents dueto improper or dangerous drivingmanoeuvres. Even though vehicle control is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain asafe distance between you and ob- jects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extremeroad conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock braking system may be longer than for those without it, in the following road con-ditions. These roads should be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tyre chains installed.
o On roads where the road surface is pitted or has different surfaceheight.
The safety features of an ABSequipped vehicle should not be testedby high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety of yourself or others.
! CAUTION:
o Never start the engine with the gearshift lever placed in the for- ward or reverse whilst one of therear wheels is jacked up and the other in contact with the ground; doing so may cause the vehicle tojump forward.
o Use only recommended oil for
LSD in the rear axle.See page 9-4 for the recommended oil descriptions.

o Apply the parking brake only when the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance pro- vided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with theengine turned off or towing of the vehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedalpressures being required to stop the vehicle.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up- grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brakepedal or parking brake.
o Use caution when parking on a hill.
Engage the parking brake and placethe gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic transaxle) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle). If your caris facing downhill, turn the front wheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facinguphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If there is no curb or if itis required by other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.DRIVING FOR ECONOMY
C140A02A-EAT You can save fuel and get more miles from your car if you follow these sug-gestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shifts and maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stoplights. Try to adjust your speed to that of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unnecessarily. Avoid heavy traffic whenever possible. Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoid unneces- sary braking. This also reduces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel your car uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the motorway, is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and also increase wear on these com- ponents. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedal may cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious consequences. o Take care of your tyres. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres- sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tyre wear. Check the tyrepressures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tyre wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions,more frequent maintenance is re- quired (see Section 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should bekept clean and free of corrosive materials. It is especially importantthat mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al- lowed to accumulate on the under- side of the car. This extra weight canresult in increased fuel consumption and also contribute to corrosion.

ZC170B1-E Electrical System Winter conditions impose severe de- mands upon vehicle electrical systems, particularly the charging circuit. The battery condition and performance along with the alternator performance and drive belt condition should bechecked prior to the onset of winter.WINTER DRIVING
DC170A1-E The onset of winter conditions subject motor vehicles to greater operating demands. Therefore, the following suggestions will assist in maintainingpeak performance and reliability dur- ing these periods:
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-
sary weight in your car. Weight re- duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than
necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not require extended warm-up. After theengine has started, allow the engineto run for 10 to 20 seconds prior to placing the vehicle in gear. In very cold weather, however, give yourengine a slightly longer warm-up pe- riod.
o Don't "labour" or "over-rev" the en- gine. Labouring is driving too slowlyin too high a gear resulting in the vehicle kangarooing. If this happens,shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shiftingat the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly.
The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fuel economy is reduced when you use it.SMOOTH CORNERING
C150A01A-EAT Avoid braking or gear changing in cor- ners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tyre wear will be held to a minimum.

YC170C1-E Anti-freeze/Corrosion inhibitor The cooling system must always con- tain an Ethylene-Glycol based anti-freeze solution. The system is filled during manufacture with solution of the correct strength which should bechecked before the onset of winter and adjusted or changed as required. NOTE: The anti-freeze solution contains a corrosion inhibitor to prevent deg- radation of the aluminium castingscontained within the engine. There- fore, never, drain the system and refill with water only. In addition, anti-freeze solution must ALWAYS be used in vehicles fittedwith air conditioning, to prevent the heater matrix from freezing and sub- sequently bursting with the refrigera-tion system in use. ZC170D2-E Door Locks Should the door lock mechanism be- come frozen, a proprietary lock de-icershould be used. Never attempt to thaw a frozen door lock using hot water, since the waterwill eventually freeze and compound the problem.
o When driving in extreme condi-
tions, the windscreen wiperblades may fail to clear the screen properly due to the formation ofice upon the blade edge. It will therefore be necessary to peri- odically remove such ice to re-store their efficiency.
o If the power operated door mir-
rors become frozen, attempts toadjust these may damage the mechanism.
o The formation of snow or ice build
up inside the wheel arches mayinterfere with the roadwheels or steering mechanism. In such in-stances, unusual noises or an in- crease in steering effort may re- sult. Therefore, ensure that thewheelarches are checked peri- odically and any accumulated snow or ice removed.
o It is advisable to carry emergency equipment including, torch,shovel, tow rope, blankets etc., ifa journey is to be undertaken into areas of severe road condi- tions.
ZC170E1-E Windscreen Washers & Wipers The windscreen washer bottle should be filled with a solution of water and aproprietary winter screen wash addi- tive. The windscreen wipers should not be used if the blades are frozen tothe windscreen or if they are covered with snow, before this is removed. NOTE: Never allow undiluted screen washer fluid additive to spill upon the paintwork or use engine cool- ant anti-freeze since damage to thepaintwork may result.

YC200C3-A Trailer Brakes If your trailer is equipped with a braking system, make sure it conforms to localregulations and that it is properly in- stalled and operating correctly. NOTE: If you tow a trailer or vehicle, your car will require more frequent main- tenance due to the additional load.See Maintenance Under Severe Usage Conditions" on page 5-6.
YC200B2-E Trailer Towbars Select the correct towbar and ball com- bination, making sure that its location is compatible with that of the trailer or vehicle being towed.Use a quality non-equalizing towbar which distributes the nose weight uni- formly throughout the chassis. The towbar should be bolted securely to the car and installed by a qualifiedtechnician.

CAUTION:
Do not do any towing with your car during its first 1,000 miles in order to allow the engine to have properlyrun-in. Failure to heed this caution may result in serious engine or trans- mission damage.
TRAILER OR VEHICLE TOWING
HPC200A2-E If you are considering towing with your car, you should first check with your Local Laws to determine their legal requirements.Since laws vary from country to coun- try, the requirements for towing trailers, cars, or other types of vehicles orapparatus may differ. Ask your Hyundai authorised repairer for further details before towing.

CAUTION:
o Never connect a trailer brake sys- tem directly to the vehicle brake system.
o When towing a trailer on steep grades (in excess of 6%) pay closeattention to the engine coolanttemperature gauge to ensure the engine does not overheat. If the needle of the coolant temperaturegauge moves across the dial to- wards "H" (HOT), pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so,and allow the engine to idle until it cools down. You may proceed once the engine has cooled suffi-ciently. YC200D2-E Safety Cables Should the towbar connection between your car and the trailer or vehicle youare towing fail, the trailer or vehicle could wander dangerously across other lanes of traffic and ultimately leave theroadway. To eliminate this potentially dangerous situation, a safety cable, attached between your car and thetrailer or towed vehicle, are required.
C190E03HP-EAT Trailer Weight Limit Nose weights can be increased or de- creased by re-distributing the load in the trailer.This can be verified by checking the total weight of the loaded trailer and then checking the nose weights. NOTE:
1. Never load the trailer with more
weight in the back than in the front. About 60% of the trailerload should be in the front half on the trailer and the remaining 40% in the rear.

1. Before towing, check towbar and
safety cable connections as well as proper operation of the trailer run- ning lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
2. Always drive your vehicle at a mod- erate speed (Less than 60 MPH).
3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than normal conditions.
4. To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency and electrical charging per-formance, do not use fifth gear (manual transmission).
5. Always secure items in the trailer to prevent load shift whilst driving.
6. Check the condition and air pres-
sure of all tyres on the trailer and your car. Low tyre pressure can seriously affect the handling. Also check the spare tyre.
7. The vehicle/trailer combination is more affected by crosswind andbuffeting.When being passed by a large ve- hicle, keep a constant speed and steer straight ahead. If there is toomuch wind buffeting slow down to get out of the other vehicle's air turbulence.

CAUTION:
If overheating should occur when towing, (temperature gauge reads near red zone), taking the following action may reduce or eliminate theproblem.
1. Turn off the air conditioner.
2. Reduce highway speed.
3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.
4. Whilst in stop and go traffic, place the gear selector in park or neu- tral and idle the engine at a higherspeed.
14. When going down a hill, shift into a
lower gear and use the engine brak-ing effect. When climbing a long grade, down- shift the transmission to a lowergear and reduce speed to reduce chances of engine overloading and/ or overheating.
15.If you have to stop whilst going uphill, do not hold the vehicle inplace by pressing on the accelera-tor. This can cause the automatic transmission to overheat. Use the parking brake or footbrake.
NOTE: When towing, check transmission fluid more frequently.
8. When parking your car and trailer,
especially on a hill, be sure to follow all the normal precautions. Turn your front wheels into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transmission in 1st or Reverse (manual) or Park (automatic). In addition, we advise the use of wheelchocks at each of the trailer's tyres.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes,
start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brake controller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the same time.
10.During your trip, check occasion- ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working.
11.Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel- eration or sudden stops.
12.Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane changes.
13.Avoid holding the brake pedal down
too long or too frequently. This couldcause the brakes to overheat, re- sulting in reduced braking efficiency.

3 IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

!WARNING:
If the engine refuses to start, no attempt should be made to push or tow start the vehicle. Vehicles with automatic transmission or fuel in-jection will not be able to be started in this manner since no drive is transmitted through the automatictransmission whilst the engine is not running, and in the case of fuel injected derivatives, the fuel pumpwill not operate under tow start conditions. In addition, if the ve- hicle is equipped with an exhaustcatalyst, damage to the catalyst may result if the vehicle is tow started. HPD020B1-E If The Engine Cannot Be Cranked
1. If the vehicle is fitted with manual
transmission, ensure that the clutch pedal is depressed whilst cranking the engine. If the vehicle is fitted with automatic transmission, en-sure that the transmission selector is at the "P" or "N" position.
2. Check the battery terminals and
connections to ensure that theseare clean and also tight.
3. If the ignition warning lights dim
when the engine is cranked and thebattery terminals have been checked, a discharged battery isindicated. 4. Do not attempt to push or tow start
the vehicle, refer to "Jump Starting"for information regarding engine start- ing when the battery is discharged.
D010C02A-EAT If Engine Turns Over Normally but Does Not Start
1. Check fuel level.
2. With the key in the "OFF" position, check all connectors at ignition coilsand spark plugs(For Petrol Engine) or check all connectors at glow plugand glow plug relay(For Diesel En- gine). Reconnect any that may be disconnected or loose.
3. Check fuel line in the engine com- partment.
4. If engine still refuses to start, call a Hyundai authorised repairer or seek other qualified assistance.
IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START
SD020A1-E Seek assistance from the nearest Hyundai authorised repairer with regard to the method of ignition and fuel sys- tem diagnosis.

1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12
volt type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve- hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to thepositive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to a ground point within the engine compartmentof the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative bat- tery terminal of the flat battery sincesparks may be generated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flat battery. 7. Switch "ON" the main beam
headlamps before carefully remov-ing the jumper cables in the reverse order of attachment. Once the jumper cables have been removed,switch "OFF" the main beam headlamps.
CAUTION:
If the jump cables are incorrectly installed, damage to the vehicle elec- trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components suchas the Fuel Injection system com- puter and the Automatic transmis- sion computer. The battery mustnever be disconnected whilst the engine is running.
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
HPD040A2-E If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual trans- mission) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from underthe bonnet, stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until the coolant hasstopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam, leave theengine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn theengine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive
belt is broken. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaking from theradiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to bedraining from it).
