Clean the sensors regularly, taking care not to
scratch or damage them.
Ve hicles with trailer hitch: Parking Assist
PA RKTRONIC is deacti vatedfo rth ere ar zone
when you es tablish an elect rical connection
between your vehicle and a trailer.
Fu nction of the passive side impact pr otec‐
tion
Pa ssive side impact pr otection is an additional
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC function which
wa rnsth e driver about obs tacles at the side of
th eve hicle. A warning is issued when obs tacles
are de tected between the front and rear de tec‐
tion range. In order for an object on the side to
be de tected, the sensors in the front and rear
bumper must firs t de tect the object while you
are driving past it.
During the parking procedure or manoeuvring,
objects are de tected as theve hicle drives past. If
yo usteer in the direction of a de tected obs ta‐
cle and there is a risk of a lateral collision, a
wa rning is issued. The segments on the sides
light up yellow or red, depending on the dis tance
to the obs tacle.

yo u ha veactivated the function in the multime‐
dia sy stem, the image from reve rsing camera 1
is shown in the multimedia sy stem display when
re ve rsege ar is selec ted. Dynamic guide lines
show the path theve hicle will take with the
st eering wheel in its cur rent position. This helps yo
uto orient yourself and to avoid obs tacles
when reve rsing.
The reve rsing camera is only an aid. It is not a
substitute foryo ur attention tothe sur roundings.
The responsibility for safe manoeuvring and
parking remains with you. Make sure that there
are no persons, animals or objects etc., in the
manoeuvring area while manoeuvring and park‐
ing.
Depending on theve hicle equipment, you can
select from thefo llowing vie ws:
R Normal view
R Wide-angle view
R Trailer view
The area behind theve hicle is displa yed as a
mir ror image, as in the inside rearview mir ror.

Sy stem limitations
Objects located abo veor below the de tection
ra nge of Active Parking Assist are not de tected
when the parking space is being measured.
These are also not take n into account when the
parking manoeuvre is calculated, e.g. overhang‐
ing loads, overhangs or loading ramp s of lor ries
or the boundaries of parking spaces. In some cir‐
cums tances, Active Parking Assist may therefore
guide you into the parking space prematurely. &
WARNING Risk of accident due to
objects located abo veor below the
de tection range of Active Parking Assist
If th ere are objects abo veor below the
de tection range, thefo llowing situations may
arise:
R Active Parking Assist may steer too ear ly.
R Vehicles with automatic transmis‐
sion: Thevehicle may not stop in front of
th ese objects.
This could cause a collision. #
Inthese situations, do not use Active
Pa rking Assist. Sn
owfa ll or heavy rain may lead toa parking
space being measured inaccuratel y.Pa rking
spaces that are partial lyoccupied bytrailer
dr aw bars might not be identified as such or be
measured incor rectly. Only use Active Parking
Assist on le vel, high-grip ground. Do not
useActive Parking Assist in thefo llowing
situations:
R Inextreme weather conditions such as ice,
pac ked snow or in heavy rain.
R Ifyo u are transporting a load that pr otru des
be yond theve hicle.
R Ifth e parking space is on a steep downhill or
uphill gradient.
R Ifyo u ha veinstalled snow chains.
Ac tive Parking Assist may also display parking
spaces that are not suitable for parking, e.g.:
R Parking spaces where parking is prohibited.
R Parking spaces on unsuitable sur faces.
Ac tive Parking Assist will not assist you with
parking spaces at right angles tothe direction of
tr ave l in thefo llowing situations:
R If two parking spaces are located immedi‐
ately next toeach other.
R Ifth e parking space is directly next toa low
obs tacle su chas a kerb. 226

cle swinging out while parking or pulling
out of a parking space
While parking or exiting a parking space, the
ve hicle swings out and can drive onto areas
of the oncoming lane.
This could cause youto collide wi thobjects
or other road users. #
Pay attention toobjects and other road
users. #
Where necessar y,stop theve hicle or
cancel the parking procedure with
Ac tive Parking Assist. #
If,forex ample, thePlease engage reverse
gear message appears in the multimedia sys‐
te m display: select the cor responding trans‐
mission position.
Ve hicles with automatic transmission: the
ve hicle drives into the selected parking
space. #
Vehicles with manual transmission: stop
as soon as Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
sounds the continuous warning tone, if not
be fore . Depending on the message or as
re qu ired, engage forw ard or reve rsege ar.
On completion of the parking procedure, the
Parking Assist finished, take control of vehicle
display message appears. Further manoeuvring
may still be necessar y. #
After completion of the parking procedure,
safeguard theve hicle against rolling away.
When requ ired bylegal requirements or local
conditions: turn the wheels towa rdsth eke rb.
% You can stop theve hicle and change the
transmission position du ring the parking pro‐
cedure. The sy stem then calculates a new
ve hicle path. The parking procedure can
th en be continued. If no new vehicle path is
av ailable, the transmission position will be
ch anged again. If theve hicle has not yet
re ached the parking space, the parking pro‐
cedure will be cancelled, should a gear be
ch anged.
Exiting a pa rking space with Active Parking
Assist
Re quirements:
R The vehicle has been par ked with Active
Pa rking Assist.
% Depending on theve hicle's equipment, the
button may also be located at a dif fere nt

cles with automatic transmission.
Drive AwayAssi stcan reduce the se verity of an
impact when pulling away. If an obs tacle is
de tected in the direction of tr avel, theve hicle's
speed is brief lyreduced toappr ox. 2 km/h. If a
critical situation is de tected, thefo llowing sym‐
bol appears in the multimedia sy stem display: &

Alw ays pay careful attention tothe traf‐
fi c situation; do not rely on Drive Away
Assi stalone. #
Be prepared tobrake or swer veas nec‐

permits and that it is safe totake eva‐
sive action. Drive
AwayAssi stis only an aid. It is not a sub‐
st itute foryo ur attention tothe sur roundings.

fatigue or increasing lapses in concentration
on the part of the driver, it suggests taking a
brea k.
AT TENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
alw ays de tect fatigue or increased lapses in con‐
centration in time. The sy stem is not a substitute
fo r a well-res ted and attentive driver. On long
journe ys,ta ke regular breaks in good time that
allow for adequ aterecuperation.
Yo u can choose between two settings.
R Standard: normal sy stem sensitivity.
R Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The
driver is warned earlier and the attention
le ve l de tected byATTENTION ASSIST is adap‐
te d according ly.
If dr owsiness or increasing lapses in concentra‐
tion are de tected, theATTENTION ASSIST: Take
a break! warning appears in the Instrument Dis‐
pla y.Yo u can ackn owledge the message and
tak e a break if necessar y.Ifyo u do not take a
break and ATTENTION ASSIST continues to
de tect increasing lapses in concentration, you
will be warned again af ter a minimum of
15 minutes. Yo
u can ha vethefo llowing status information for
AT TENTION ASSIST displa yed in the assis tance
menu of the on-board computer:
R The length of the journey since the last
break.
R The attention le vel de term ined byATTENTION
ASSIS T:
- the fuller the circle, the higher the atten‐
tional le vel de term ined
- asyour attention wanes, the circle in the
centre of the display becomes smaller If
AT TENTION ASSIST is unable tocalculate the
attention le vel and cannot issue a warning, the
System suspended messageappears.
If a warning is given in the Instrument Displa y,
th e multimedia sy stem of fers to sear chfor a rest
area. You can select a rest area and start naviga‐
tion tothis rest area. This function can be activa‐
te d and deactivated in the multimedia sy stem.
If AT TENTION ASSIST is deactivated, theé
symbol appears in the assis tance graphic in the
Instrument Display when the engine is running.
AT TENTION ASSIST is activated automatically
when the engine is re-sta rted. The last selected
sensitivity le velre mains stored.
Sy stem limitations
AT TENTION ASSIST is active in the 60 km/h to
200 km/h speed range.
The functionality of ATTENTION ASSIST is
re stricted, and warnings may be dela yed or not
occur at all in thefo llowing situations:
R Ifyo u ha vebeen driving for less than appr ox‐
imately 30 minutes. 232
