GWARNING
Fuels are toxic and harmful to health. There
is a risk of injury.
You must avoid fuels coming into contact
with skin, eyes and clothes or being swal-
lowed.
Do not inhale the fuel vapors. Keep children
away from fuels.
Keep doors and windows closed during the
refueling process.
If you or others come into contact with fuel,
observe the following points:
RImmediately rinse the fuel off your skin
with soap and water.
RIf you get fuel into your eyes, immediately
rinse your eyes throughly with clean
water. Seek medical attention immedi-
ately.
RSeek medical attention immediately if fuel
has been swallowed. Do not induce vomit-
ing.
RImmediately change out of clothing which
has come into contact with fuel.
GWARNING
Electrostatic charging can lead to the crea-
tion of sparks and ignite fuel vapor. There is
a risk of fire and explosion.
Touch the metallic body of the vehicle
before you open the fuel filler cap or handle
the pump nozzle. Any possible electrostatic
charge present will in this way be depleted.
Do not get into the vehicle again during the
refueling process. Otherwise, electrostatic
charge could build up again.
!Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles with agasoline engine. Do not switch on the igni-tion if you accidentally refuel with the wrongfuel. Otherwise, the fuel will enter the fuelsystem. Even small amounts of the wrongfuel could result in damage to the fuel sys-tem and the engine. Notify a qualified spe-cialist workshop and have the fuel tank andfuel lines drained completely.
!Overfilling the fuel tank could damage thefuel system.
!Take care not to spill any fuel on paintedsurfaces. You could otherwise damage thepaintwork.
!Use a filter when adding fuel from a fuelcan. The fuel lines and/or the fuel injectionsystem could otherwise be blocked by parti-cles from the fuel can.
Do not get into the vehicle again during therefueling process. Otherwise, electrostaticcharge could build up again.
If you overfill the fuel tank, fuel could sprayout when the fuel pump nozzle is removed.

Refueling
General information
Pay attention to the important safety notes(Ypage 142).
The fuel filler flap is unlocked/locked automat-ically when you unlock/lock the vehicle withthe SmartKey.
The position of the fuel filler cap is displayed

The electric parking brake is not automaticallyapplied if the engine is switched off by theECO start/stop function.
Releasing automatically
Your vehicle's electric parking brake is auto-matically released if all of the following condi-tions are met:
RThe engine is running
RThe transmission is in position[or^andyou depress the accelerator pedal or shiftfrom position]to[or^
RThe seat belt is fastened
If the transmission is in position^, the tail-gate must be closed.
If your seat belt is not fastened, the followingconditions must be fulfilled to automaticallyrelease the electric parking brake:
RThe driver's door is closed.
RYou are shifting from transmission position]or have previously driven at speedsgreater than 2 mph (3 km/h)
Ensure that you do not depress the accelera-tor pedal unintentionally. Otherwise, the park-ing brake will be released and the vehicle willstart to move.
Emergency braking
The vehicle can also be braked during anemergency by using the electric parking brake.
XWhile driving, push handleCof the electricparking brake (Ypage 147).The vehicle is braked as long as you keephandleCof the electric parking brakepressed. The longer the electric parkingbrake handleCis depressed, the greaterthe braking force.

When the vehicle has been braked to a stand-still, the electric parking brake is applied.
Parking the vehicle for a long period
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer thanfour weeks, the battery may be damaged byexhaustive discharging.
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer thansix weeks, the vehicle may suffer damage as aresult of lack of use.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could
affect, for example, the power steering and
the brake boosting effect. You will require
considerably more effort to steer and brake.
There is a risk of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving.

If you operate mobile communication equip-
ment when driving, you may be distracted
from the traffic situation. You could also
lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of
an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the vehi-
cle is stationary.
Observe the legal requirements for the countryin which you are driving. Some jurisdictionsprohibit the driver from using a mobile phonewhile driving a vehicle.
If you make a call while driving, always usehands-free mode. Only operate the telephonewhen the traffic situation permits. If you areunsure, pull over to a safe location and stopbefore operating the telephone.

Battery (vehicle)
Important safety notes
Special tools and expert knowledge arerequired when working on the battery, e.g.removal and installation. You should thereforehave all work involving the battery carried outat a qualified specialist workshop.
GWARNING
Work carried out incorrectly on the battery
can lead, for example, to a short circuit and
thus damage the vehicle electronics. This
can lead to function restrictions applying to
safety-relevant systems, e.g. the lighting
system, the ABS (anti-lock braking system)
or the ESP®(Electronic Stability Program).
The operating safety of your vehicle may be
restricted.
You could lose control of the vehicle, for
example:
Rwhen braking
Rin the event of abrupt steering maneuvers
and/or when the vehicle's speed is not
adapted to the road conditions
There is a risk of an accident.
In the event of a short circuit or a similar
incident, contact a qualified specialist work-
shop immediately. Do not drive any further.
You should have all work involving the bat-
tery carried out at a qualified specialist
workshop.

GWARNING
Electrostatic build-up can lead to the crea-
tion of sparks, which could ignite the highly
explosive gases of a battery. There is a risk
of an explosion.
Before handling the battery, touch the vehi-
cle body to remove any existing electrostatic
build-up.
The highly flammable gas mixture forms whencharging the battery as well as when jump-starting.
Always make sure that neither you nor the bat-tery is electrostatically charged. A build-up ofelectrostatic charge can be caused, for exam-ple:
Rby wearing clothing made from syntheticfibers
Rdue to friction between clothing and seats
Rif you push or pull the battery across thecarpet or other synthetic materials
Rif you rub the battery with a cloth
GWARNING
During the charging process, a battery pro-
duces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you only use batteries which havebeen tested and approved for your vehicle byMercedes-Benz. These batteries provideincreased impact protection to prevent vehicleoccupants from suffering acid burns shouldthe battery be damaged in the event of anaccident.
In order for the battery to achieve the maxi-mum possible service life, it must always besufficiently charged.
Like other batteries, the vehicle battery maydischarge over time if you do not use the vehi-cle. In this case, have the battery disconnec-ted at a qualified specialist workshop. You canalso charge the battery with a charger recom-mended by Mercedes-Benz. Contact a quali-fied specialist workshop for further informa-tion.
Have the battery condition of charge checkedmore frequently if you use the vehicle mainlyfor short trips or if you leave it standing idlefor a lengthy period. Consult a qualified spe-cialist workshop if you wish to leave your vehi-cle parked for a long period of time.
Only replace a battery with a battery that hasbeen recommended by Mercedes-Benz.
Remove the SmartKey if you park the vehicleand do not require any electrical consumers.The vehicle will then use very little energy,thus conserving battery power.
If the power supply has been interrupted, e.g.if you reconnect the battery, you will have to:
Rset the clock using the multimedia system(see the Digital Operator's Manual)
Rreset the function for folding the exteriormirrors in/out automatically, by folding themirrors out once (Ypage 99)
Charging the battery
GWARNING
During charging and jump-starting, explosive
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is suffi-
cient ventilation while charging and jump-
starting. Do not lean over a battery.
GWARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of
injury.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash away battery acid immedi-
ately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical attention.
GWARNING
A discharged battery can freeze at tempera-
tures below freezing point. When jump-start-
ing the vehicle or charging the battery,
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before
charging it or jump-starting.
!Only use battery chargers with a maximumcharging voltage of 14.8 V.
!Only charge the battery using the jump-starting connection point.
The jump-starting connection point is in theengine compartment (Ypage 295).
XOpen the hood.
XConnect the battery charger to the positiveterminal and ground point in the same orderas when connecting the donor battery in thejump-starting procedure (Ypage 295).
If the indicator/warning lamps do not light upin the instrument cluster at low temperatures,it is very likely that the discharged battery hasfrozen. In this case you may neither jump-startthe vehicle nor charge the battery. The servicelife of a thawed-out battery may be shorter.The starting characteristics can be impaired,

particularly at low temperatures. Have thethawed-out battery checked at a qualified spe-cialist workshop.
Only charge the installed battery with a batterycharger which has been tested and approvedby Mercedes-Benz. A battery charger unit spe-cially adapted for Mercedes-Benz vehicles andtested and approved by Mercedes-Benz isavailable as an accessory. It permits the charg-ing of the battery in its installed position. Con-tact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center forfurther information and availability. Read thebattery charger's operating instructions beforecharging the battery.
Replacing the 12 V battery
Observe the notes on the 12 V battery(Ypage 292).
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you havethe 12-V battery replaced at a qualified spe-cialist workshop, e.g. an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
If you want to replace the battery yourself,observe the following notes:
RAlways replace a defective battery with abattery which meets the specific require-ments of the vehicle.
The vehicle is equipped with a battery usingAGM (absorbent glass mat) technology or abattery using EFB (enhanced flooded bat-tery) technology. Full vehicle functionality isguaranteed only with an AGM or EFB bat-tery. If replacement is necessary, alwaysuse the battery technology originally instal-led. Switching between the battery technol-ogies is not permitted. For safety reasons,Mercedes-Benz recommends that you onlyuse batteries which have been tested andapproved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz.
RUse detachable parts such as breatherhoses, angled connecting pieces or terminalcovers from the battery which is to bereplaced.
RMake sure that the vent hose is always con-nected to the original opening on the bat-tery side.
RInstall existing or supplied cell caps; other-wise gases or battery acid could escape.
RMake sure that the detachable parts areconnected again in the same way.
Jump-starting
For the jump-starting procedure, use only the jump-starting connection point, consisting of apositive terminal and a ground point, in the engine compartment.

During the charging process, a battery produces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs or
sparks are created, the hydrogen gas can ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.
RMake sure that the positive terminal of a connected battery does not come into contact with
vehicle parts.
RNever place metal objects or tools on a battery.
RIt is important that you observe the described order of the battery terminals when connect-
ing and disconnecting a battery.
RWhen jump-starting, make sure that the battery poles with identical polarity are connected.
RIt is particularly important to observe the described order when connecting and disconnect-
ing the jumper cables.
RNever connect or disconnect the battery terminals while the engine is running.
GWARNING
A discharged battery can freeze at temperatures below freezing point. When jump-starting the
vehicle or charging the battery, gases can escape from the battery. There is a risk of an explo-
sion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before charging it or jump-starting.
!Avoid repeated and lengthy starting attempts. Otherwise, the catalytic converter could bedamaged by the non-combusted fuel.

Do not start the vehicle using a rapid charging device. If your vehicle's battery is discharged, theengine can be jump-started from another vehicle or from a second battery using jumper cables.Observe the following points:
RThe battery is not accessible in all vehicles. If the other vehicle's battery is not accessible,jump-start the vehicle using a second battery or a jump-starting device.
RYou may only jump-start the vehicle when the engine and exhaust system are cold.
RDo not start the engine if the battery is frozen. Let the battery thaw first.
ROnly jump-start from batteries with a 12 V voltage rating.
ROnly use jumper cables that are not damaged and have a sufficient cross-section and insula-ted terminal clamps.
RMake sure that the two vehicles do not touch.
Make sure that:
RThe jumper cables are not damaged.
RNon-insulated parts of the terminal clamps do not come into contact with other metal partswhile the jumper cables are connected to the battery.
RThe jumper cables cannot come into contact with parts that can move when the engine is run-ning, such as the V-belt pulley or the fan.
XSecure the vehicle by applying the electric parking brake.
XShift the transmission to position].
XTurn the SmartKey to positionZin the ignition lock and remove it.
