functioned, you may not notice restrictions to
saf ety-re leva nt sy stem functions.
The operating saf ety of your vehicle may be

at a qualified specialist workshop. If
yo u are uncer tain rega rding the operational
saf ety of your vehicle, park theve hicle safely as
soon as possible. Inform a qualified specialist

The on-board computer will show only messages
and warnings from cer tain sy stems on the dis‐
pla y.Yo u should therefore make sure your vehicle
is operating safely at all times.

Speedome ter
In vehicles with Active Dis tance Assi st
DISTRONIC, there are illuminated segments on
th e speedome ter dial. These segments show
you what speed range is
av ailable:
R Variable limiter activated (/ page159)
The segments light up from thest art of the
scale tothe selected limit speed.
R Active Dis tance Assi stDISTRONIC switched
on (/ page 162)
One or two segments light up in the sa ved
speed range.
R Active Dis tance Assi stDISTRONIC de tects a
ve hicle in front.
The segments light up from the speed of the
ve hicle in front up tothe sa ved speed.
Yo u can show the speed as a digital speedome ter
on the display as well.
If yo uch ange your vehicle's wheel size, check its
assignment tothe wheel size group
(/ page 258). If the assignment changes with‐
out recoding the cont rol units in theve hicle, the
speedome ter will not display the speed accu‐
ra tely. The cur rent vehicle speed may then be
higher than the speed shown bythe speedome‐
te r.Driving and driving sa fety sy stems may then
be operationally impaired or may de tect a mal‐
function and switch themselves off.
In some count ries, an audible signal will sound
and/or a message will appear on the display
when theve hicle reaches the maximum speed
permitted bylaw, e.g. at 120 km/h.

hot, escaping operating fluids. #
Before opening the bonn et, allow the
engine tocool down. #
Intheeve nt of a fire inthe engine com‐
partment, keep the bonn etclosed and
call thefire service. The coolant
temp erature display is located within
th e instrument clus ter's rev counter.
During normal driving and if the coolant le vel is

board computer will be activated.
Ve hicles with manual transmission: if youre mo ve
th eke y,then quickly re-inse rtit and switch the
po we r supp lyon, the on-board computer and the
instrument clus ter will not be activated.

th e on-board computer with thesteering wheel

There are two USB ports in the cent reconsole
st orage compartment.
The USB port with theç symbol facilitates the
connection of the mobile phone with the multi‐
media sy stem using a suitable cable. This will
enable youto use the functions of the mobile
phone via Apple CarPlay ®
or Android Auto.
Anti-theft pr otection
This device is equipped with tech nical pr ovisions
to protect it against theft. More de tailed informa‐
tion about anti-theft pr otection can be obtained
at a qualified specialist workshop. 194

A sy
stem update consists of thre esteps:
R Downloading or copying of the data requ ired
fo r ins tallation
R Installation of the downloaded sy stem update
R Activating the downloaded sy stem update by
re starting the sy stem
% An Internet connection is
requ ired for online
updates. For automatic online updates, your
ve hicle must ha vea permanent lyins talled
communication module.
% Yo
u can start the software update manually
via the sy stem settings. If automatic software
updates are activated, the sy stem updates
will be downloaded automatically . Settings
fo r automatic software updates can also be
made in the sy stem settings.
The multimedia sy stem pr ovides a cor responding
message when a sy stem update is available.
Yo u ha vethefo llowing selection options:
R Download
The sy stem update will be downloaded in the
bac kground.
R Details
Info rm ation about the pending sy stem update
is displa yed.
R Later
The sy stem update can be downloaded man‐
ually at a later time.
Deep sy stem updates
Deep sy stem updates access vehicle or sy stem
settings and can therefore only be car ried out
when theve hicle is stationary and the ignition is
switched off.
When the download of a deep sy stem update is
comple teand the downloaded sy stem update is
re ady for ins tallation, you will be notified, for
ex ample, af terth e next ignition cycle.

before starting the ins tallation.
Re quirements forth e ins tallation:
R The ignition is switched off.
R Notes and warnings ha vebeen read and
accep ted.
R The electric parking brake has been applied.
If all requirements are met, the downloaded sys‐
te m update is ins talled. The multimedia sy stem
cann otbe operated while the downloaded sy stem update is being ins
talled and vehicle functions
are restricted.
If er rors should occur during the ins tallation, the
multimedia sy stem automatically attem ptsto
re store the pr evious version. If restoration of the
pr ev ious version is not possible, a symbol
appears on the media displa y.Consult a qualified

DANG ER Risk of exhaust gas poisoning
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
ga ses such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
ga ses can enter theve hicle interior if theta il‐
gate is open when the engine is running,
especially if theve hicle is in motion. #
Always switch off the engine before
opening theta ilgate. #
Never drive with theta ilgate open. &
WARNING Risk of injury from unsecured
objects in theve hicle
When objects are unsecured or inadequately
secured, they can slip, tip over or be thro wn
about, striking vehicle occupants.
This also applies to:
R luggage or loads
R seats which ha vebeen remo ved and are
being transpor ted in theve hicle in an
exc eptional case
There is a risk of injur y,particularly in the
ev ent of braking manoeuvres or abrupt
ch anges in direction. #
Alwaysstow objects in such a wayth at
th ey cannot be tossed about. #
Before tr avelling, secure objects, lug‐
ga ge or load topreve ntthem slipping or
tipping over. #
When a seat is remo ved, keep it prefera‐
bly outside theve hicle. &

re ctly positioned load
The centre of gr avity of the load can be too
high and/or toofa rto wa rdsth ere ar.
This can significantly impair handling as well
as steering and braking characteristics. #
Always make sure that the cent reof
gr av ity of the load is between the axles
and as low as possible near there ar
axle. &
WARNING Risk of accident due to
exc eeding the permissible wheel/axle
loads or the gross vehicle weight
The driving characteristics, as well as steering
and braking, may be greatly impaired. Over‐
loaded tyres may overheat and bur stas a
consequence. #
When transpo rting a load, alw ays
obser vethe permissible wheel loads,
axle loads and the maximum permissi‐
ble gross mass forth eve hicle (including
occupants). &
WARNING Risk of injury if unsuitable
climbing aids are used
In theev ent that you use openings in the
bodywork or attachments as steps, you
could:
R Slip and/or fall.
R Damage theve hicle and thus slip and fall. #
Always use non-slip, stable climbing
aids, e.g. a suitable ladder. *

capacity of thero of luggage rack ( /page 278).
The handling characteristics of your vehicle are
dependent on the load distribution.
Therefore, please obser vethefo llowing no tes
when loading:
R the load must not pr otru de abo vethe upper
edge of the seat backrests.
R if possible, alw ays transport the load in the
load compartment.
R fastenthe load tothe tie-down eyes and dis‐
tribute the load evenly among them. 212

The lashing angle is the angle form ed between
th e load compartment floor and the lashing mate‐
ri al. For optimum load securing in accordance
with standard ISO 27955 the lashing angle must
be between 45° 2and 75°1. The maximum
nominal tensile load of 350 daN forth e tie-down
ey es in the load compartment floor or in the

cor rectly ins talled and do not mo ve. #

Turn me tal retaining ring 3 sothat it is paral‐
lel tothe long axis of tie-down eye2 as illus‐
tra ted.
The locking pin can only be pushed down suf‐
fi ciently and allow the tie-down eyeto be fit‐
te d, mo ved or remo ved, if the me talre taining
ri ng is para lleltothe long axis of the tie-down
ey e. #
Hold tie-down eye2 between your fore finger
and middle finger as illust rated, and place
yo ur thumb thro ugh me talre taining ring 3
and on the cent ral pressure point. #
Use your thumb topush the locking pin down
as far as it will go. #
Push tie-down eye2 near the load using the
notches on guide rail1, and mo veit appr ox‐
imately 12mm. #
Remo veyour thumb from the pressure point
and slide tie-down eye2 until it engages. Tr
