For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be
left in selector lever
position and held stationary with the servicebrake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place th
e selector lever in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position a
nd apply the parking
brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that
the selector lever is in
“D” (DRIVE) position. To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully engage the parking brake,
and then move the sele
ctor lever to the “P”
(PARK) position. If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may bethat there is something unusual happening in the transmission. start assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heavilyloaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is
not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to
maintain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not perform the following operation while the hill start assist is operating.[Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y ] Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” or“ACC” position. The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from locking up when braking. This helps maintain vehicle drivability andsteering wheel handling. When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted
situations where brakes are
applied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking whenyou drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.
When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat-ing and hear a unique sound. It may also feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make sure to always keep a sufficient distance be
tween your vehicle and
a vehicle in front of
you without relying too
much on the brake assist system.NOTE
Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released.To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal. When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal. When the anti-lock brake system warning light is illuminated, the brake assist system is not functioning.

This is a normal result the anti-lock braking systemmakes when performing a self-check. It does not indicate a problem. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has
reached a speed over
approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stops working when the vehicle slows below 3mph (5 km/h).

ASC. At this time, you may feel a shockfrom under the body and the brake pedal if you depress it. These do

When the ASC is acti
vated, you may feel a
vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that the system is operatingnormally. It does not i
ndicate a malfunction.
When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function
NOTE
The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.

Cruise control is an
automatic speed control
system that keeps a set speed. It can be acti-vated at speeds from about 25 mph (40 km/h). Cruise control does not work at speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
Used to turn on and off the cruise control. Used to reduce the set speed and to set the desired speed.
CAUTION The system may be malfunctioning. Park your vehicle in a
safe place and stop the
engine.Restart the engine and check whether the indicator goes out. If they go out, there is no abnormal condition. If they do not go out orappear frequently, it is
not necessary to stop
the vehicle imme
diately, but you should have
your vehicle inspecte
d by an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer
or a repair facility
of your choice as soon as possible.

CAUTION When towing the vehicle with only the front wheels or only the rear wheels raised off theground, do not place the ignition switch in the “ON” position or do
not put the operation
mode in ON. Placing
the ignition switch in
the “ON” position or
putting the operation
mode in ON could cause the ASC to operate, resulting in an accident.Note that the correct towing method dependson the transmission type and the vehicle’s drive configuration. For details, refer to

Cruise control

CAUTIONWhen you do not wish to drive at a set speed, turn off the cruise control for safety. Do not use cruise cont
rol when driving con-
ditions will not allow you to stay at the same speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roads that are winding, icy, snow-covered, wet,slippery, on a stee
p downhill slope.
On vehicles equipped
with manual transaxle,
do not move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position whil
e driving at a set
speed without depressi
ng the clutch pedal.
The engine will run
too fast and might be
damaged.NOTE
Cruise control may not
be able to keep your
speed on uphills or downhills. Your speed may decrease on a steep uphill. You may use the accelerator pedal if you want to stay at your set speed.
Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You have to usethe brake to control your speed. As a result,the set speed driving is deactivated.

To increase your speed in small amounts, press the RES + switch
for less than about 1
second and release it. Each time you press the RES + switch, your vehicle will go about 1 mp
h (1.6 km/h) faster.
While driving at the set speed, use the accel- erator pedal to reach your desired speed and then press the SET - switch (B) and release the switch momentarily to set a new desiredcruising speed.

There are 2 ways to decrease the set speed.
Press and hold the SET - switch (B) while driving at the set speed, and your speed will slow down gradually.When you reach your desired speed, release the switch. Your new cruising speed is now set. To slow down your speed in small amounts, press the SET - switch for less than about 1 second and release it. Each time you press the SET - switch, yourvehicle will slow down by about 1 mph (1.6 km/h). While driving at the set speed, use the brake pedal, which disengage
s the cruise control,
then press the SET - switch (B) and release the switch momentarily to set a new desiredcruising speed.
