When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put inON, the tire pressure monitoring system
warning light normally
illuminates and goes
off a few seconds later. If one or more of the vehicle tires (except for the spare tire) is signi
ficantly under-inflated,
the warning light will remain illuminated while the ignition switch is in the “ON” posi-tion or the operation mode is put in ON. Refer to “If the warning light / display illumi- nates while driving” on page 5-116 and takethe necessary measures.

CAUTION If the tire pressure monitoring system warn- ing light does not illumi
nate when the igni-
tion switch is turned to the “ON” position orthe operation mode is put in ON, it means that the tire pressure monitoring system is not working properly. Have the systeminspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations, a malfunctioning of thesystem may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving. If a malfunction is detected in the tire pres- sure monitoring system, the tire pressuremonitoring system warning light will blink for approximately 1 mi
nute and then remain
continuously illuminate

will issue further warnings each time the engine is restarted as
long as the malfunction
exists.Check to see whether the warning light goes off after few minutes driving. If it then goes off during driving, there is noproblem. However, if the warning light does not go off, or if it blinks again when the engine isrestarted, have the
vehicle inspected by an

i Motors dealer.
In such situations, a malfunctioning of thesystem may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. For safety reasons, when the warning light appears while driving,avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving.

Utility vehicles have
higher ground clearance
and a narrower track, which enables them to perform in a wide variety of off-road situa-tions. Because of the higher ground clear- ance, these vehicles have a higher center of gravity, which makes them handle differentlythan ordinary vehicles when driving on pave- ment. They are not designed to maneuver or corner at the same speed on pavement as con-ventional 2-wheel driv

more than low-slung sports cars are designed to perform sati

tions. Always drive safely and steer the vehicle carefully. Avoid operati

manner that might require sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers. As w

rate this vehicle cor-
rectly can result in loss of control or vehicle rollover. In a rollover crash, an unbelted person is sig-nificantly more likely to die than a person wearing a seat belt. Be

Fuel economy is depe
ndent on many factors.
Your personal driving habits can have a sig- nificant effect on your fuel consumption. Several recommendations
for achieving the
greatest fuel economy are listed below. Whenever accelerating from a stop, always accelerate
slowly and smoothly.
When parked for even a short period, do not idle the engine. Shut it off. Plan your trips to avoid unnecessary stops. Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. When driving on highways or dry improved roads, set the drive mode-selec-tor “4WD ECO”, “4WD AUTO” or “AWC ECO”, “NORMAL” position (if so equipped). For freeway driving, maintain a speed of approximately 50 mph (80 km/h) when traffic, roadway and weather conditionssafely permit.

t with the seats of
the wheel holes and the wheel is not loose. [Type 2: On vehicles with aluminiumwheels] Temporarily tighten the wheel nuts by hand until the flange parts of the wheelnuts make light contact with the wheel and the wheel is not loose.
8. Lower the vehicle slowly until the tire touches the ground, by rotating the wheel nut wrench counterclockwise.
NOTE
Flange nuts can be te
mporarily used on the
compact spare wheel as shown in the illustra- tion, but return to the original wheel and tire as soon as possible.CAUTION Never apply oil to either the wheel bolts or the nuts or they will tighten too much.

9. Tighten the nuts in the order shown in the illustration until each
nut has been tight-
ened to the torque listed here. 65 to 80 ft-lb (88 to 108 N•m)
10. Lower the jack all th
e way and remove it.
11. Check the tire inflation pressure. The rec-
ommended tire pressure for your vehicleis listed on the tire and loading informa- tion placard attached to the driver’s door sill as shown in the illustration. Refer to“Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-18.

1. Place the tire on the center of the tirehanger, with the wheel surface facing upwards.
CAUTION Never use your foot or a pipe extension to apply added force to the wheel nut wrench when tightening the wheel nuts. If you do so,you can over-tighten the wheel nuts and damage the wheel, wheel nuts and hub bolts.
CAUTION Driving with an improperly inflated tire can cause an accident. If
you have no choice but
to drive with an under-inflated tire, keep your speed down and avoid sudden steering or braking, if possible. Inflate the tire to thecorrect pressure as s
oon as possible. Refer to
“Tire inflation pressures” on page 9-18. After changing the tire
and driving the vehi-
cle about 620 miles (1,000 km), retighten the wheel nuts to make sure that they have notcome loose.

e tire, have the tire checked
for balance at an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Do not mix one type of
tire with another or
use a different size from the one listed. This would cause early we
ar and poor handling.
To store the spare tire

If your vehicle becomes
stuck in snow, sand,
or mud, it can often be moved by a rockingmotion. Rock your vehicle back and forth to free it. Do not rev the engine or spin the wheels.Constant efforts to free a stuck vehicle can cause overheating and tr
ansaxle failure. Let
the engine idle for a few minutes to cool thetransaxle before trying again. If your vehicle is still
stuck after several rock-
ing attempts, call for a commercial tow truckservice.
When driving on a road covered with snow or ice, use s
now tires. Tire chains
cannot be used on your vehicle. There may be state or local regulations aboutusing snow tires. Always check the regu- lations in your local area before using them. Refer to “Snow tires” on page 9-20and “Tire chains” on page 9-21. Drive slowly. Do not make sudden starts or stops, sharp turns, or slam on the brakes. Allow extra distance between your vehi- cle and the vehicle in front of you, and avoid sudden braking. If a skid occurs when the accelerator pedal is depressed, take your foot off the pedal. Steer gently in the direction of the skid. Your vehicle is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Hold the brake pedal down firmly and keep it depressed.Do not pump the brake pedal which will result in reduced braking performance.

your vehicle out of a
stuck position, make sure that there are nopeople nearby. The
rocking motion can
make your vehicle suddenly lurch forward or backward, and inju
re any bystanders.
On wet roads
CAUTIONAvoid flooded roads. Water is often deeper than it looks, and you could be seriously hurtby driving into flood water. When driving in rain, on water-covered roads, or through a car
wash, water could get
into the brake discs and make them fail tem- porarily. In such cases, lightly press thebrake pedal to see if they are working prop- erly. If they are not, press the pedal lightly several times while driving to dry the brakepads or linings, then check them again. When driving in rain, a layer of water may form between the tires and the road surface (hydroplaning). This loosens your tires’ grip on the road, making it difficult to steer orbrake properly. When driving on a wet road:• Drive your vehicle at a safe speed.• Do not drive on worn tires.• Always keep the tires at the correct infla-tion pressures.

It is important to familiarize yourself with the following terms: Cold tire pressure: • The measured pressure after the vehicle has been parked for
at least three hours,
or• The measured pressure when the vehicle is driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
Maximum pressure: the maximum per- missible cold tire inflation pressure for this tire.
WA R N I N G Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, or you could damagethe vehicle’s electrical parts. Never short-circuit the battery. This could cause it to overheat and be damaged. Keep sparks, cigarette
s, and flames away
from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills on nearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if it gets on your skin orin your eyes, it can cause burns or blind- ness. Please observe the following han- dling instructions:• If electrolyte gets on plastic parts orother nearby parts, wipe it off with a softcloth or chamois soak
ed in a solution of
water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts withplenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. If electrolyte gets in
your eyes, flush them
with water immediately and get immedi-ate medical attention.
Open doors and wind
ows in any closed
space where you may be charging or working with the battery. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobi
le technician do it.
If you are quick-charging your battery, first disconnect the battery cables. In order to prevent a short-circuit, be sure to disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, and reconnect it last. If the electrolyte level
is very low, have the
battery checked at an
authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer or
a repair facility of
your choice. Battery posts, termin
als and related acces-
sories contain lead
and lead compounds.
Wash hands after handling.NOTE
Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can prevent further corrosion by wash-ing with a solution of
baking soda and water.
Grease the posts and cl
amps after cleaning or
tightening them. Ensure the battery is securely installed and cannot be moved. Also
check each terminal
for tightness. If you will not be driv
ing your vehicle for a
long period of time, re
move the battery and
store it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. The batter
y only should be stored
with a full charge. Before cleaning the ba
ttery, tighten all the
filler port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.
