S-AWC is an integrated vehicle dynamicscontrol system that helps enhance drivingperformance, cornering performance, andvehicle stability over a wide range of drivingconditions through integrated management ofthe twin motor 4WD, the AYC (Active YawControl), the ABS and the ASC.
This system improves vehicle stability perfor-mance and fuel economy performance duringacceleration and deceleration by motors pro-vided at front and rear wheels, respectively,controlling the distribution of a drive forcebetween the front and rear wheels optimal forthe operation of the driver.

The AYC is a system, with a left-right differ-ential limiting function and yaw control func-tion, that controls the left-rightdriving/braking force by managing the brake.

CAUTIONzDo not over-rely on the S-AWC. Even the S-AW C c a n n o t p r e v e n t t h e n a t u r a l l a w s o fphysics from acting on the vehicle. This sys-tem, like any other system, has limits andcannot help you to maintain traction and con-trol of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reck-less driving can lead to accidents. It is thedriver’s responsibility to drive carefully.This means taking into account the traffic,road and environmental conditions.

The left-right differential limiting function isa function that enhances driving performanceand vehicle stability by preventing idle spin-ning of a wheel when driving on slipperyroad or when the road surfaces of left andright wheels are different.The yaw control function is a function thatenhances vehicle cornering performance andvehicle stability with management of vehicleturning power (yaw moment) by controllingthe braking force when the vehicle does notturn in response to steering input, such aswhen the steering wheel is turned quickly orwhen driving on slippery road.

If the 4WD lock switch is pressed when thepower mode is “ON”, it will switch to “4WDLOCK.” It can use from a low-speed to high-speedoperation, and the driving stability improveson a wet road surface or a snowy road, etc. If the 4WD lock switch is pressed once again,it will return to “NORMAL.”. When the 4WD LOCK mode is activated, theabove display appears on the informationscreen in the multi-information display forsome seconds.

The S-AWC operation status can be displayedon the information screen in the multi-infor-mation display.To display the status, press the multi-informa-tion display switch to change the informationscreen.Refer to “Information screen (when the oper-ation mode in ON)” on page 6-7.
CAUTIONzControl of the braking force does notenhance the stopping performance of thevehicle, therefore, pay careful attention tothe safety of your surroundings when driv-ing.

Yo u r v e h i c l e h a s b e e n d e s i g n e d p r i m a r i l y f o ruse on pavement.But its unique 4-wheel drive system allowsyou to occasionally travel on unpaved roads,to campgrounds, picnic sites, and similarlocations.Not only does this ensure better handling ondry, paved roads but also permits better trac-tion when driving on slippery, wet or snow-covered roads and when moving out of mud.But it is not suitable for heavy off road use ortowing in rough conditions.It is particularly important to note that 4-wheel drive may not give sufficient hillclimbing ability and regenerative brake onsteep slopes. You should try to avoid drivingon steep slopes.Also, you must exercise caution when drivingon sand and mud and when driving throughwater because sufficient traction may not beavailable in certain circumstances.Please avoid driving the vehicle through areaswhere the tyres may get stuck in deep sand ormud.

zDo not drive on a flooded road. If youdrive on a flooded road, not only the Plug-in Hybrid EV System stops but also a fail-ure like electric leakage or short circuitmay occur.If you inevitably had to run on a floodedroad and the vehicle was exposed towater, be sure to have your vehicleinspected by a MITSUBISHI MOTORSAuthorised Service Point.zIf there is water on the brakes after driv-ing through puddles or washing the vehi-cle, resulting in temporarily ineffectivebrakes. In such cases, lightly depress thebrake pedal to see if the brakes operateproperly. If they do not, lightly depressthe pedal several times while driving inorder to dry the brake pads.zWhen driving in rain or on a road withmany puddles a layer of water may formbetween the tyres and the road surface.This reduces a tyre’s frictional resistanceon the road, resulting in loss of steeringstability and braking capability.To c o p e w i t h t h i s , o b s e r v e t h e f o l l o w i n gitems:
zWhen driving on a snow-covered or fro-zen road, it is recommended that you usesnow tyres or snow traction device (tyrechains).Refer to the “Snow tyres” and “Snowtraction device (tyre chains)” sections.zAv o i d h i g h - s p e e d o p e r a t i o n , s u d d e nacceleration, abrupt brake application andsharp cornering.zDepressing the brake pedal during travelon snowy or icy roads may cause tyreslippage and skidding. When tractionbetween the tyres and the road is reducedthe wheels may skid and the vehicle can-not readily be brought to a stop by con-ventional braking techniques. Brakingwill differ, depending upon whether youhave anti-lock brake system (ABS). Asyour vehicle is equipped with ABS, brakeby pressing the brake pedal hard, andkeeping it pressed.zAllow extra distance between your vehi-cle and the vehicle in front of you, andavoid sudden braking.
zAccumulation of ice on the braking sys-tem can cause the wheels to lock. Pullaway from a standstill slowly after con-firming safety around the vehicle.
Drive as slow as possible when driving onbumpy or rutted roads.This vehicle is intended for driving mainlyon roads with firm surface.4WD system makes possible driving on roadswithout special coverage, on flat and firmsurface. Please, remember that off-road abil-ity of your vehicle is limited. Your vehicle isnot intended for driving in heavy off-road,overcoming the rugged terrain, deep ruts, etc.
On a flooded road (a)Drive your vehicle at a slow speed.(b)Do not drive on worn tyres.
(c)Always maintain the specified tyre infla-tion pressures.
On a snow-covered or frozen road
CAUTIONzDo not press the accelerator pedal rapidly. Ifthe wheels break free of the ice, the vehiclecould suddenly start
moving and possibly
cause an accident.
On a bumpy or rutted road
CAUTIONzThe impact on tyres and/or wheels whendriving on a bumpy or rutted road can dam-age the tyre and/or wheel.

It is recommended that snow chains are car-ried in snow regions and fitted when requiredto the front wheels in accardance with themanufacture’s instructions.On 4WD vehicles in which the driving poweris distributed preferentially to the frontwheels, ensure that the tyre chains are fittedon the front.The tyres fitted to your vehicle as originalequipment allow you to fit tyre chains if theyare required. When replacing your tyres,check with the tyre distributor or manufac-turer if the fitting of tyre chains will be detri-mental to the tyres being purchased.
Always follow the chain manufacturer’sinstructions when fitting the chains.

slip off the jack.CAUTIONzChoose a clear straight stretch of road whereyou can pull off and still be seen while youare fitting the chains.zDo not fit chains before you need them. Thiswill wear out your tyres and the road surface.zAfter driving around 100-300 metres, stopand retighten the chains.zCare should be taken with extremes of steer-ing lock to prevent possible contact betweenthe chains and the vehicle body.zDrive carefully and do not exceed 30 km/h.Remember, fitting chains is not going to stopaccidents from happening.zWhen tyre chains are installed, take care thatthey do not damage the disc wheel or body.zAn aluminium wheel can be damaged by atyre chain while driving. When fitting a tyrechain on an aluminium wheel, take care thatany part of the chai
n and fitting cannot be
brought into contact with the wheel.
zRemove the wheel covers before installing atyre chain, otherwise they may be damagedby the tyre chain. (Refer to page 9-18.)zWhen installing or removing the tyre chains,take care that hands and other parts of yourbody are not injured by the sharp edges ofthe vehicle body.zInstall the chains only on the front tyres andtighten them as tightly
as possible with the
ends securely fastened.
