The left-right differential limiting function isa function that enhances driving performanceand vehicle stability by preventing idle spin-ning of a wheel when driving on slipperyroad or when the road surfaces of left andright wheels are different.The yaw control function is a function thatenhances vehicle cornering performance andvehicle stability with management of vehicleturning power (yaw moment) by controllingthe braking force when the vehicle does notturn in response to steering input, such aswhen the steering wheel is turned quickly orwhen driving on slippery road.

If the 4WD lock switch is pressed when thepower mode is “ON”, it will switch to “4WDLOCK.” It can use from a low-speed to high-speedoperation, and the driving stability improveson a wet road surface or a snowy road, etc. If the 4WD lock switch is pressed once again,it will return to “NORMAL.”. When the 4WD LOCK mode is activated, theabove display appears on the informationscreen in the multi-information display forsome seconds.

Since the driving torque can be applied to the4 wheels, the driving performance of thevehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive isgreatly affected by the condition of the tyres.Pay close attention to the tyres.zInstall only the specified tyres on allwheels. Refer to “Tyres and wheels” onpage 12-8.zBe sure all 4 tyres and wheels are thesame size and type.When it is necessary to replace any of thetyres or wheels, replace all four.zAll tyres should be rotated before thewear difference between the front and reartyres is recognisable.
Good vehicle performance cannot beexpected if there is a difference in wearbetween tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” onpage 11-11.zCheck the tyre inflation pressure regu-larly.

Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N GzDo not turn on Plug-in Hybrid EV Systemor turn a jacked-up wheel when the vehi-cle is jacked up. The tyre in contact withthe ground may turn and the vehicle maycome off the jack, possibly leading to anaccident. Besides, do not touch the high-voltage area.

zWhen the ABS is activated, you may feelthe brake pedal pulsation and the vibra-tions of the vehicle body and steeringwheel. You may also hear a characteristicnoise. At this time, you may feel as if thepedal attempts to resist being depressed.This is a normal result of the ABS opera-tion, and does not indicate a problem.If this situation occurs, depress thebrake pedal more firmly in order tooperate the ABS. Do not pump thebrake. This will result in reduced brak-ing performance.zYo u w i l l h e a r t h e o p e r a t i o n s o u n d o f t h emotor coming from the Plug-in HybridEV System compartment immediatelyfollowing start off after starting the Plug-in Hybrid EV System. If the brake pedalis depressed at that moment, a brake pedalpulsating is felt.This pulsation is due to the self-diagnosisoperation of the ABS and does not indi-cate a malfunction.zThe ABS becomes operative after thevehicle has accelerated to a speed inexcess of about 10 km/h. It stops operat-ing when the vehicle decelerates to aspeed below about 5 km/h.

On slippery surfaces, the traction controlfunction prevents the drive wheels from spin-ning excessive, thus helping the vehicle tostart moving from a stopped condition. It alsoprovides sufficient driving force and steeringperformance as the vehicle turns while press-ing the acceleration pedal.

maneuvers. It works by controlling the Plug-in Hybrid EV System output and the brake oneach wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when theoperation mode is put in ON. You can deacti-vate the system by pressing down the “ASCOFF” switch for 3 seconds or longer.When the ASC is deactivated, the indica-tor will turn on. To reactivate the ASC,momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch;the indicator is turned off.
CAUTIONzDo not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASCcannot prevent the natural laws of physicsfrom acting on the vehicle.This system, like any

Check the tyres for cuts, cracks and otherdamage. Replace the tyres if there are deep
cuts or cracks. Also check each tyre forpieces of metal or pebbles.The use of worn tyres can be very dangerousbecause of the greater chance of skidding orhydroplaning. The tread depth of the tyresmust exceed 1.6 mm in order for the tyres tomeet the minimum requirement for use.Tread wear indicators will appear on the sur-face of the tyre as the tyre wears, therebyindicating that the tyre no longer meets theminimum requirement for use. When thesewear indicators appear, the tyres must bereplaced with new ones.When replacement of any of the tyres is nec-essary, replace all of them.
