(1) Drive for a while (approx, 10 minutes) in 4-wheel drive and try again. (2) Drive straight forward slowly for 1 to 2 meters (3.3 to 6.6 ft.) and then back up, repeating this procedure several times. (6) It is very important that any repairs of the a utomatic free wheeling hubs be done correctly. Have any such repairs done only at an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.

HI3 4CA
& VAROITUS Ala kayta takatasauspyoraston lukkoa ajaessasi tavallisilla teilla. (1) Kaytettaessa vahingossa ajet-taessa paallystetyilla teilla: Kun takatasauspyoraston lukko on kytketty. voima ajoneuvon suoraan vetoon voimistuu huomattavasti. joten ohjauspyoran kaantaminen vaikeutuu. (2) Kaytettaessa vahingossa kaanteissa tai tehtaessa kaannos vasemmalle tai oikealle risteyksessa tms. Ajoneuvo ei pysty kaantymaan ja saattaa kulkea suoraan eteenpain.

Examples of incorrect use of the
rear differential lock EI34CA
& CAUTION Do not use the rear differential lock when driving on normal roads. Incorrect use of it may make the vehicle difficult to turn or may change its direction abruptly. Be sure to confirm that the operation indication lamp is off when driving on normal roads. (1) If it is used by mistake when driving on a paved road: With the rear differential lock on. the power to drive the vehicle straight ahead becomes very strong. which may make it difficult to turn the steering wheel. (2) If it is used by mistake when turning a curve or making a right or left turn at a crossing or the like: The vehicle is unable to make a turn and may go straight ahead.

Correct four-wheel drive operation fl32A·,
By shifting to four-wheel drive, the both axles of the vehicle are rigidly connected with each other. This improves the traction
charac teristics . When turning sharp corners or moving forward and backward repeatedly, however, the drive line is stressed, which is felt as a braking effect. A four-wheel drive vehicle can
acce lerate more quickly and smoothly.
H owever, note that the braking distance is not shorter than that
o f a two-wheel drive vehicle.
When using four-wheel drive on rough roads (snow, mud, sand, etc .) , it is important to operate the vehicle correctly .
NOTE
After driving on rough roads, c h
eck each part of the vehicle and
wash it thoroughly with water. Refer to the "Vehicle care"
sectio n.
Driving on snowy or icy roads
Set the transfer shift lever to "4HLc" or "4H " (Super select 4WD) or "4H" (Part time 4WD) 111 accordance with the road
conditions, and then graduall y depress the accelerator pedal for
a smooth start.
NOTE (1) The use of
snow tyres and/or tyre chains is recommended.
(2) Maintain a safe distanc e between vehicles, avoid sudden
braking , and use engine braking (downshifting). (3) Avoid sudden braking, sudde n acceleration , and sharp turning; such operations could cause skidding and spinouts.

Turning sharp corners < Except "4H" (Super select
4WO»
When turning a sharp corner in four-wheel drive , the same
thing that happens w hen doing so with the brake applied may occur. This is call e d tight corne r braking, and results from each of the four ty res being at a different distance from the corner.
Th e phenomenon is peculiar to four-wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either str aighten out the steering wheel, or change to two- w he el drive.
Crossing a stream
Four-w heel drive ve hicles are not necessarily waterproof. If the
e lectr ical c ircu it s become wet, further operation of t he vehicle will be impossib le ; therefore , avoid crossi ng streams unless absolutely necessary. If crossing a stream is unavoidable, us e
th e following procedure:
( 1 ) Cross at a place where the
water is less than 50 cm (1 .6 ft.)
deep .
(2) Set the transfe r shift lever to "4LLc" (Super select 4WD) or "4L" (Part time 4WD).
(3) Drive slowly at a sp eed of approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) to avoid sp lashing too much water,

& CAUTION (1) After changing the tyre. drive the vehicle approximately 1000 km (621 miles) and retighten the wheel nuts to make sure that they are not loose. (2) If the steering wheel vibrates when driving after change of the tyre, have the tyre checked for balance at your MITSUBISHI dealer. (3) For the safety of your vehicle, be sure to avoid mixing one type of tyre with another type or using tyros of the size other than the specified size.

If your vehicle is to be towed, pay careful attention to the following points:
(1) Move the gearshift lever (manual transmission) or the
selector lever (automatic transmission) to neutral or the "N".
(2) Move the transfer shift lever to "2H" position. (3) Vehicles with rear differential lock system , turn off the rear
differantial lock switch. (4) Be sure the towing speed is within the legal limit. In addition, if the vehicle is of the following type , make sure that the towing speed and distance given below are never
exceeded .
Vehicles
with an automatic transmission Towing speed : 30 km/h (19 mph ) Towing distance : 30 km (19 miles)
(5) If the transmission is malfunctioning or damaged , or if a
vehicle with an automatic transmission must be towed farther than 30 km (19 miles), tow the vehicle with the rear
wheels raised off the ground. (6) Turn the ignition switch to the "ACe or "ON" position to unlock the steering wheel. (7) Turn on the hazard warning lamps . (8) During towing make sure that close contact is maintained between the drivers of both vehicles, and that the vehicles travel at low speed. Avoid abrupt starting or stopping which might subject the vehicles to shock . (9) As the engine is not running, the brake booster and power steering pump do not operate . This means higher brak e
depression force and higher steering effort are required.
Th erefore, operation is more
difficult than usual.
