Changing A/T FluidUCS005M9
1. Warm up A/T fluid.
2. Stop engine.
3. Drain A/T fluid by removing the drain plug. Reinstall the drain plug to the specified torque.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse drain plug gasket.
4. Refill the transaxle with new specified A/T fluid through the A/T fluid charging pipe. Always refill the tran-
saxle with the same volume of A/T fluid that was drained out.
5. Run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes.
6. Check A/T fluid level and condition. Refer to AT- 1 6 , "
Checking A/T Fluid" .
A/T Fluid Cooler CleaningUCS006KH
Whenever the A/T is repaired, overhauled, or replaced, the A/T fluid cooler mounted in the radiator must be
inspected and cleaned.
Metal debris and friction material, if present, can become trapped in the A/T fluid cooler. This debris can con-
taminate the newly serviced A/T or, in severe cases, can block or restrict the flow of A/T fluid. In either case,
malfunction of the newly serviced A/T may result.
Debris, if present, may build up as A/T fluid enters the cooler inlet. It will be necessary to back flush the cooler
through the cooler outlet in order to flush out any built up debris.
A/T FLUID COOLER CLEANING PROCEDURE
1. Identify the A/T inlet and outlet fluid cooler hoses.
2. Position an oil pan under the A/T inlet and outlet fluid cooler
hoses.
3. Disconnect the A/T fluid cooler inlet and outlet rubber hoses
from the steel cooler tubes or bypass valve.
NOTE:
Replace the cooler hoses if rubber material from the hose
remains on the tube fitting.
4. Allow any A/T fluid that remains in the cooler hoses to drain into
the oil pan.
5. Insert the extension adapter hose of a can of Transmission
Cooler Cleaner (Nissan P/N 999MP-AM006) into the cooler out-
let hose.
CAUTION:

Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when spraying
the Transmission Cooler Cleaner.

Spray Transmission Cooler Cleaner only with adequate
ventilation.

Avoid contact with eyes and skin.

Do not breath vapors or spray mist.
6. Hold the hose and can as high as possible and spray Transmis-
sion Cooler Cleaner in a continuous stream into the cooler outlet hose until A/T fluid flows out of the cooler
inlet hose for 5 seconds. Drain plug: Refer to AT- 2 5 7 , "
Components" .

Precautions for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR BAG” and “SEAT
BELT PRE-TENSIONER”

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WA RN ING:

To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.

Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air
Bag Module, see the SRS section.

Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or
harness connectors.
Precautions for Brake SystemEFS006J2

Refill using recommended brake fluid. Refer to MA-11, "RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS" .

Never reuse drained brake fluid.

Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted surface of body. If brake fluid is splashed on painted sur-
faces of body immediately wipe it off with cloth and then wash it away with water.

To clean or wash all parts of master cylinder, disc brake caliper and wheel cylinder, use new brake fluid.

Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. They will ruin rubber parts of the hydraulic system.

Use a flare nut wrench when removing a brake tube and use a
flare nut torque wrench when installing a brake tube.

When installing brake tubes and hoses, be sure to check torque.

Before working, turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect con-
nectors of ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) or the bat-
tery cable from the negative terminal.

Burnish the new braking surfaces after refinishing or replacing
drums or rotors, after replacing pads or linings, or if a soft pedal
occurs at very low mileage. Refer toBR-29, "

CAUTION:

Refer to MA-11, "RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS" for recommended brake fluid.

Never reuse drained brake fluid.

Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas; it may cause paint damage. If brake fluid is
splashed on painted areas, wash it away with water immediately.

To clean or wash all parts of master cylinder and disc brake caliper, use clean brake fluid.

Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. They will ruin rubber parts of the hydraulic
system.

Use flare nut wrench when removing and installing brake
tube.

If a brake fluid leak is found, the part must be disassembled
without fail. Then it has to be replaced with a new one if a
defect exists.

Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the connector of
the ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) or the bat-
tery terminal before performing the work.

Always torque brake lines when installing.

Burnish the brake contact surfaces after refinishing or
replacing rotors, after replacing pads, or if a soft pedal
occurs at very low mileage. Refer to BR-29, "
Brake Burnishing Procedure" .
WAR NIN G:

Clean brake pads and shoes with a waste cloth, then wipe with a dust collector.
Precautions When Using CONSULT-IIEFS006L9
When connecting CONSULT-II to data link connector, connect them through CONSULT-II CONVERTER.
CAUTION:
If CONSULT-II is used with no connection of CONSULT-II CONVERTER, malfunctions might be
detected in self-diagnosis depending on control unit which carries out CAN communication.
CHECK POINTS FOR USING CONSULT-II
1. Has CONSULT-II been used without connecting CONSULT-II CONVERTER on this vehicle?

If YES, GO TO 2.

If NO, GO TO 5.

Use recommended brake fluid when adding fluid to the clutch reservoir tank. Refer to MA-11,
"RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS".

Never reuse fluid drained from clutch system.

Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas.

Use new brake fluid to clean or wash all parts of master cylinder and operating cylinder.

Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. It will ruin the rubber parts of the hydraulic
system.

If transaxle assembly is removed from the vehicle, always replace CSC (Concentric slave cylin-
der). Return CSC to original position to remove transaxle assembly. Dust on clutch disc sliding
parts may damage CSC seal and may cause clutch fluid leakage.

Do not disassemble clutch master cylinder and CSC.
WAR NIN G:
After cleaning clutch disc, clean it with a dust collector. Do not use compressed air.

If water drain plug on cylinder block is removed, close and tighten it. Refer to EM-77, "CYLIN-
DER BLOCK" .
CAUTION:
Be sure to clean radiator drain plug and install with new O-ring. Refer to CO-11, "
Components" .
3. Make sure that each hose clamp has been firmly tightened.
4. Remove air duct assembly. Refer to EM-16, "
AIR CLEANER AND AIR DUCT" .
5. Disconnect heater hose (1) at position ( ) as shown.

Front

Reposition heater hose as high as possible.
6. Fill radiator and reservoir tank to specified level.

Pour engine coolant through engine coolant filler neck
slowly of less than 2 (2 1/8 US qt, 1-3/4 lmp qt) a minute
to allow air in system to escape.

Use NISSAN Genuine Engine Coolant or equivalent
mixed with water (distilled or demineralized). Fill cooling
system to specification. Refer to MA-11, "
RECOM-
MENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS".

When engine coolant overflows disconnected heater hose,
connect heater hose, and continue filling the engine coolant, if
heater hose is disconnected.
7. Install radiator cap.
8. Install air duct assembly. Refer to EM-16, "
AIR CLEANER AND AIR DUCT" .
9. Warm up until opening thermostat. Standard for warming-up time is approximately 10 minutes at 3,000
rpm.

Make sure thermostat opening condition by touching radiator hose (lower) to see a flow of warm water.
CAUTION:
Watch water temperature gauge so as not to overheat the engine.
10. Stop engine and cool down to less than approximately 50°C (122°F).

Cool down using fan to reduce the time.

If necessary, refill radiator up to filler neck with engine coolant.
11. Refill reservoir tank to “MAX” level line with engine coolant.
12. Repeat steps 6 through 11 two or more times with radiator cap installed until engine coolant level no
longer drops.
13. Check cooling system for leaks with engine running.
14. Warm up engine, and check for sound of engine coolant flow while running engine from idle up to 3,000
rpm with heater temperature controller set at several position between “COOL” and “WARM”.

Sound may be noticeable at heater unit.
15. Repeat step 14 three times.
16. If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating steps 6 through 11 until engine coolant level
no longer drops.
FLUSHING COOLING SYSTEM
1. Install reservoir tank if removed. Refer to CO-11, "RADIATOR" .
2. Install radiator drain plug.

NOTE:
If any malfunction occurs in the RE0F08A model transaxle, replace the entire transaxle assembly.

Before connecting or disconnecting the TCM harness con-
nector, turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect negative
battery cable. Because battery voltage is applied to TCM
even if ignition switch is turned OFF.

When connecting or disconnecting pin connectors into or
from TCM, take care not to damage pin terminals (bend or
break).
When connecting pin connectors make sure that there are
not any bends or breaks on TCM pin terminal.

Before replacing TCM, perform TCM input/output signal
inspection and make sure whether TCM functions properly
or not. CVT-54, "
TCM INSPECTION TABLE".

After performing each TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS, perform
“DTC Confirmation Procedure”.
If the repair is completed the DTC should not be displayed
in the “DTC Confirmation Procedure”.

Always use the specified brand of CVT fluid. Refer to MA-11,
"Fluids and Lubricants" .

Use lint-free paper, not cloth rags, during work.

After replacing the CVT fluid, dispose of the waste oil using the
methods prescribed by law, ordinance, etc.

CVT FLUID COOLER SERVICE
If CVT fluid contains friction material (clutches, brakes, etc.), or if an CVT is replaced, inspect and clean the
CVT fluid cooler mounted in the radiator or replace the radiator. Flush cooler lines using cleaning solvent and
compressed air after repair. For CVT fluid cooler cleaning procedure, refer to CVT-18, "
CVT Fluid Cooler
Cleaning" . For radiator replacement, refer to CO-11, "RADIATOR" .

1. Warm up CVT fluid by driving the vehicle for 10 minutes.
