WARNING
∙ Do not leave children or adults whowould normally require the assis-
tance of others alone in your vehicle.
Pets should also not be lef t alone.
They could accidentally injure them-
selves or others through inadvertent
operation of the vehicle. Also, on hot,
sunny days, temperatures in a closed
vehicle could quickly become high
enough to cause severe or possibly
fatal injuries to people or animals.
∙ Properly secure all cargo with ropes or straps to help prevent it from sliding
or shif ting. Do not place cargo higher
than the seatbacks. In a sudden stop
or collision, unsecured cargo could
cause personal injury.
EXHAUST GAS (carbon monoxide)
WARNING
∙ Do not breathe exhaust gases; theycontain colorless and odorless carbon
monoxide. Carbon monoxide is dan-
gerous. It can cause unconsciousness
or death. ∙ If you suspect that exhaust fumes are
entering the vehicle, drive with all
windows fully open, and have the ve-
hicle inspected immediately.
∙ Do not run the engine in closed spaces such as a garage.
∙ Do not park the vehicle with the en- gine running for any extended length
of time.
∙ Keep the rear vent windows, lif tgates, doors and trunk lids (if so equipped)
closed while driving, otherwise ex-
haust gases could be drawn into the
passenger compartment. If you must
drive with one of these open, follow
these precautions:
1. Open all the windows.
2. Set the
air recirculation but-
ton to off and the fan control dial to
high to circulate the air.
∙ If electrical wiring or other cable con- nections must pass to a trailer
through the seal on the lif tgate or the
body, follow the manufacturer’s rec-
ommendation to prevent carbon
monoxide entry into the vehicle. ∙ The exhaust system and body should
be inspected by a qualified mechanic
whenever:
a. The vehicle is raised for service.
b. You suspect that exhaust fumes are entering into the passenger
compartment.
c. You notice a change in the sound of the exhaust system.
d. You have had an accident involving damage to the exhaust system,
underbody, or rear of the vehicle.
THREE-WAY CATALYST (if so
equipped)
The three-way catalyst is an emission con-
trol device installed in the exhaust system.
Exhaust gases in the three-way catalyst
are burned at high temperatures to help
reduce pollutants.

Remember, drinking and driving don’t mix!
That is true for drugs (over-the-counter,
prescription) and illegal drugs, too. Don’t
drive if your ability to operate your vehicle is
impaired by alcohol, drugs, or some other
physical condition.
DRIVING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Your NISSAN is designed for both normal
and off-road use. However, avoid driving in
deep water or mud as your NISSAN is
mainly designed for leisure use, unlike a
conventional off-road vehicle.
Remember that 2-wheel drive models are
less capable than 4-wheel drive models for
rough road driving and extrication when
stuck in deep snow or mud, or the like.
Please observe the following precautions:
WARNING
∙ Drive carefully when off the road andavoid dangerous areas. Every person
who drives or rides in this vehicle
should be seated with their seat belt
fastened. This will keep you and your
passengers in position when driving
over rough terrain. ∙ Do not drive across steep slopes. In-
stead drive either straight up or
straight down the slopes. Off-road ve-
hicles can tip over sideways much
more easily than they can forward or
backward.
∙ Many hills are too steep for any ve- hicle. If you drive up them, you may
stall. If you drive down them, you may
not be able to control your speed. If
you drive across them, you may roll
over.
∙ Do not shif t gears while driving on downhill grades as this could cause
loss of control of the vehicle.
∙ Stay alert when driving to the top of a hill. At the top there could be a drop-
off or other hazard that could cause
an accident.
∙ If your engine stalls or you cannot make it to the top of a steep hill, never
attempt to turn around. Your vehicle
could tip or roll over. Always back
straight down in R (Reverse) gear and
apply brakes to control your speed. ∙ Heavy braking going down a hill could
cause your brakes to overheat and
fade, resulting in loss of control and
an accident. Apply brakes lightly and
use a low gear to control your speed.
∙ Unsecured cargo can be thrown around when driving over rough ter-
rain. Properly secure all cargo so it will
not be thrown forward and cause in-
jury to you or your passengers.
∙ Secure heavy loads in the cargo area as far forward and as low as possible.
Do not equip the vehicle with tires
larger than specified in this manual.
This could cause your vehicle to roll
over.
∙ Do not grip the inside or spokes of the steering wheel when driving off-road.
The steering wheel could move sud-
denly and injure your hands. Instead
drive with your fingers and thumbs on
the outside of the rim.
∙ Before operating the vehicle, ensure that the driver and all passengers
have their seat belts fastened.

WARNING
Do not operate the push-button igni-
tion switch while driving the vehicle ex-
cept in an emergency. (The engine will
stop when the ignition switch is pushed
three consecutive times in quick suc-
cession or the ignition switch is pushed
and held for more than 2 seconds.) If the
engine stops while the vehicle is being
driven, this could lead to a crash and
serious injury.When the ignition switch is pushed without
depressing the brake pedal, the ignition
switch position will illuminate as follows:
Push center:
∙ Once to change to ACC.
∙ Two times to change to ON.
∙ Three times to return to OFF.
The ignition switch will automatically re-
turn to the LOCK position when any door is
either opened or closed with the switch in
the OFF position.
The ignition lock is designed so that the
ignition switch position cannot be placed
in the OFF position until the shif t lever is
moved to the P (Park) position.
When the ignition switch cannot be pushed
toward the OFF position, proceed as fol-
lows: 1. Move the shif t lever into the P (Park) position.
2. Push the ignition switch. The ignition switch position will change to the ON
position.
3. Push the ignition switch again to the OFF position. The shif t lever can be moved from the P
(Park) position if the ignition switch is in
the ON position and the brake pedal is
depressed.
If the battery of the vehicle is discharged,
the push-button ignition switch cannot
be moved from the LOCK position.
Some indicators and warnings for opera-
tion are displayed in the meter. For addi-
tional information, refer to “Vehicle infor-
mation display warnings and indicators” in
the “Instruments and controls” section of
this manual.

ON (Normal operating position)
This position turns on the ignition system
and electrical accessories.
ON has a battery saver feature that will
place the ignition switch in the OFF posi-
tion, if the vehicle is not running, af ter some
time under the following conditions:∙ All doors are closed.
∙ The shif t lever is in P (Park).
∙ The hazard lamps are off.
∙ The turn signals are off.
The battery saver feature will be canceled if
any of the following occur: ∙ Any door is opened.
∙ The shif t lever is moved out of the P (Park) position.
∙ The ignition switch changes position.
∙ The hazard lamps are turned on.
∙ The turn signals are turned on.CAUTION
Do not leave the vehicle with the igni-
tion switch in the ACC or ON position
when the engine is not running for an
extended period. This can discharge the
battery.
OFF
The ignition switch is in the OFF position
when the engine is turned off using the
ignition switch. If equipped, the ignition
switch heart beat function (pulsed illumi-
nation) may activate for a period of time
when any door is unlocked and when the
door opened/closed status changes in the
OFF and ACC positions.
EMERGENCY ENGINE SHUT OFF
To shut off the engine in an emergency
situation while driving, perform the follow-
ing procedure: ∙ Rapidly push the ignition switch three consecutive times in less than 1.5 sec-
onds, or
∙ Push and hold the ignition switch for more than 2 seconds.
NISSAN INTELLIGENT KEY®
BATTERY DISCHARGE
If the battery of the NISSAN Intelligent Key®
is discharged, or environmental conditions
interfere with the Intelligent Key operation,
start the engine according to the following
procedure:
1. Place the shif t lever in the P (Park) posi- tion.
2. Firmly apply the foot brake.
3. Touch the ignition switch with the Intel- ligent Key as illustrated. (A chime will
sound.)

Push the switch on to warn other drivers
when you must stop or park under emer-
gency conditions. All turn signal lights flash.
WARNING
∙ If stopping for an emergency, be sureto move the vehicle well off the road.
∙ Do not use the hazard warning flash- ers while moving on the highway un-
less unusual circumstances force you
to drive so slowly that your vehicle
might become a hazard to other
traffic. ∙ Turn signals do not work when the
hazard warning flasher lights are on.
The flashers will operate with the ignition
switch placed in any position.
Some jurisdictions may prohibit the use
of the hazard warning flasher switch
while driving. To shut off the engine in an emergency
situation while driving, perform the follow-
ing procedure:
– Rapidly push the push-button ignition
switch three consecutive times in less
than 1.5 seconds, or
– Push and hold the push-button ignition switch for more than 2 seconds.

10. Securely store the flat tire beneath thevehicle, from where the full size spare
was removed.
11. To reinstall the jack and tool kit, reverse steps 1 through 5.

pending plate on the wheel and then lif t
the spare tire.
Getting the spare tire and tools
(Single Cab models)
1. Move the front passenger seat to ac-cess the tools. For additional informa-
tion about seat functions, refer to “
Seats” in the “Safety–Seats, seat belts
and supplemental restraint system”
section of this manual. 2. Remove the lid from the tool storage
compartment.
3. Release the straps

C. 6. Assemble the pieces of the jack rod.
Find the oval-shaped opening above
the license plate, slightly to the lef t of
the middle (driver’s side). Pass the
T-shaped end of the jack rod through
the opening and direct it toward the
spare tire winch, located directly above
the spare tire.
CAUTION
Do not insert the jack rod straight as it is
designed to be inserted at an angle as
shown.

7. Fit the square end of the jack rod intothe square hole of the wheel nut
wrench to form a handle.
8. Seat the T-shaped end of the jack rod into the T-shaped opening of the tire
winch. Apply pressure to keep the jack
rod engaged in the spare tire winch
and turn the jack rod counterclockwise
to lower the spare tire.
9. Once the spare tire is completely low- ered, reach under the vehicle, remove
the retainer chain and carefully slide
the tire from under the rear of the ve-
hicle. 10. Securely store the flat tire beneath the
vehicle, from where the full size spare
was removed.
11. To reinstall the jack and tool kit, reverse steps 1 through 5.
CAUTION
Be sure to center the spare tire sus-
pending plate on the wheel and then lif t
the spare tire.
Getting the spare tire and tools
(King Cab® models not equipped
with rear seat)
1. Open the passenger side rear door andremove the lid from the tool storage
compartment.

Jacking up vehicle and removing
the damaged tire (all models)
WARNING
∙ Never get under the vehicle while it issupported only by the jack. If it is nec-
essary to work under the vehicle, sup-
port it with safety stands.
∙ Use only the jack provided with your vehicle to lif t the vehicle. Do not use
the jack provided with your vehicle on
other vehicles. The jack is designed
for lif ting only your vehicle during a
tire change.
∙ Use the correct jack-up points. Never use any other part of the vehicle for
jack support. ∙ Never jack up the vehicle more than
necessary.
∙ Never use blocks on or under the jack.
∙ Do not start or run the engine while vehicle is on the jack. It may cause the
vehicle to move. This is especially true
for vehicles with limited slip
differentials.
∙ Do not allow passengers to stay in the vehicle while it is on the jack.
∙ Never run the engine with a wheel(s) off the ground. It may cause the ve-
hicle to move.

3. Install the assembled jack rod into thejack as shown.
4. To lif t the vehicle, securely hold the jack lever and rod. Carefully raise the vehicle
until the tire clears the ground. 5. Remove the wheel nuts and then re-
move the tire.
Installing the spare tire
The spare tire is designed for emergency
use. For additional information, refer to
“Wheels and tires” in the “Do-it-yourself ”
section of this manual.
1. Clean any mud or dirt from the surface between the wheel and hub.
2. Carefully put the spare tire on and tighten the wheel nuts finger tight.
3. With the wheel nut wrench, tighten wheel nuts alternately and evenly in the
sequence illustrated (
1,2,3,4,5,6)
until they are tight.

4. Lower the vehicle slowly until the tiretouches the ground. Then, with the
wheel nut wrench, tighten the wheel
nuts securely in the sequence illus-
trated (
1,2,3,4,5,6). Lower the
vehicle completely.
WARNING
∙ Incorrect wheel nuts or improperly tightened wheel nuts can cause the
wheel to become loose or come off.
This could cause an accident.
∙ Do not use oil or grease on the wheel studs or nuts. This could cause the
nuts to become loose.
∙ Retighten the wheel nuts when the vehicle has been driven for 600 miles
(1,000 km) (also in cases of a flat tire,
etc.).
As soon as possible, tighten the wheel
nuts to the specified torque with a
torque wrench.
Wheel nut tightening torque:
Non-XD models: 98 f t-lb (133 N·m) XD models:
131 f t-lb (177 N·m)
The wheel nuts must be kept tightened
to specification at all times. It is recom-
mended that wheel nuts be tightened to
specifications at each lubrication inter-
val.
Adjust tire pressure to the COLD pres-
sure.
COLD pressure: Af ter vehicle has been
parked for 3 hours or more or driven less
than 1 mi. (1.6 km).
COLD tire pressures are shown on the
Tire and Loading Information label af-
fixed to the driver side center pillar.
Af ter adjusting tire pressure to the COLD
tire pressure, the display(if so equipped)
of the tire pressure information may
show higher pressure than the COLD tire
pressure af ter the vehicle has been
driven more than 1 mi. (1.6 km). This is
because the tire pressure increases as
the tire temperature rises. This does not
indicate a system malfunction. 5. Securely store the tools and jacking
equipment in the vehicle. For additional
information, refer to the “Getting the
spare tire and tools (Crew and King
Cab® models),” “Getting the spare tire
and tools (Single Cab models)” or “Get-
ting the spare tire and tools (King Cab®
models not equipped with rear seat)” in
this section.
WARNING
∙ Always make sure that the spare tireand jacking equipment are properly
secured af ter use. Such items can be-
come dangerous projectiles in an ac-
cident or sudden stop.
∙ The spare tire is designed for emer- gency use. For additional information,
refer to “Wheels and tires” in the “Do-
it-yourself ” section of this manual.
