FOREWORD
This manual contains maintenance and repair procedures for the NISSAN
X-TRAIL , model T30 series.
In order to assure your safety and the efficient functioning of the vehicle,
this manual should be read thoroughly. It is especially important that the
PRECAUTIONS in the GI section be completely understood before starting
any repair task.
All information in this manual is based on the latest product information
at the time of publication. The right is reserved to make changes in speci-
fications and methods at any time without notice.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
The proper performance of service is essential for both the safety of the
technician and the efficient functioning of the vehicle.
The service methods in this Service Manual are described in such a man-
ner that the service may be performed safely and accurately.
Service varies with the procedures used, the skills of the technician and the
tools and parts available. Accordingly, anyone using service procedures,
tools or parts which are not specifically recommended by NISSAN must
first be completely satisfied that neither personal safety nor the vehicle's
safety will be jeopardized by the service method selected.

PROCEDURE
CAUTION:
lAlways drive vehicle at a safe speed.
lBe careful not to rev engine into the red zone on the tachometer.
NOTE:
If “DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE” has been previously conducted,
always turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 5 seconds before conducting the next test.
TESTING CONDITION:
Always drive vehicle on a level road to improve the accuracy of test.
After the repair, perform the following procedure to confirm the malfunction is eliminated.
With CONSULT-II
1. Start engine and select “DATA MONITOR” mode for “A/T” with CONSULT-II.
2. Make sure that output voltage of A/T fluid temperature sensor is within the range below.
FLUID TEMP SEN : 0.4 - 1.5V
If out of range, drive the vehicle to decrease the voltage (warm up the fluid) or stop engine to increase the
voltage (cool down the fluid).
3. Select “1ST GR FNCTN P0731” of “DTC WORK SUPPORT”
mode for “A/T” with CONSULT-II and touch “START”.
4. Accelerate vehicle to 15 to 20 km/h (9 to 12 MPH) under the fol-
lowing condition and release the accelerator pedal completely.
THROTTLE POSI: Less than 1.0/8 (at all times during step 4)
Selector lever: D position (OD “ON”)
lCheck that “GEAR” shows “2” after releasing pedal.
5. Depress accelerator pedal to WOT (more than 7.0/8 of “THROT-
TLE POSI”) quickly from a speed of 15 to 20 km/h (9 to 12 MPH)
until “TESTING” changes to “STOP VEHICLE” or “COM-
PLETED”. (It will take approximately 3 seconds.)
If the check result NG appears on CONSULT-II screen, go to
“DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE”,AT-155, "
Diagnostic Procedure".
If “STOP VEHICLE” appears on CONSULT-II screen, go to the following step.
lCheck that “GEAR” shows “1” when depressing accelerator pedal to WOT.
lIf “TESTING” does not appear on CONSULT-II for a long time, select “SELF-DIAGNOSIS” for
“ENGINE”. In case a 1st trip DTC other than P0731 is shown, refer to applicable “TROUBLE DIAG-
NOSIS FOR DTC”.

SERVICE HOSES
Be certain that the service hoses display the markings described
(colored hose with black stripe). All hoses must include positive shut
off devices (either manual or automatic) near the end of the hoses
opposite the manifold gauge.
SERVICE COUPLERS
Never attempt to connect HFC-134a (R-134a) service couplers to an
CFC-12 (R-12) A/C system. The HFC-134a (R-134a) couplers will
not properly connect to the CFC-12 (R-12) system. However, if an
improper connection is attempted, discharging and contamination
may occur.
REFRIGERANT WEIGHT SCALE
Verify that no refrigerant other than HFC-134a (R-134a) and speci-
fied lubricants have been used with the scale. If the scale controls
refrigerant flow electronically, the hose fitting must be 1/2²-16
ACME.
CALIBRATING ACR4 WEIGHT SCALE
Calibrate the scale every three months.
To calibrate the weight scale on the ACR4 :
1. PressShift/ResetandEnterat the same time.
2. Press8787.“A1” will be displayed.
3. Remove all weight from the scale.
4. Press0,thenpressEnter.“0.00” will be displayed and change to “A2”.
5. Place a known weight (dumbbell or similar weight), between 4.5 and 8.6 kg (10 and 19 lb) on the center of
the weight scale.
6. Enter the known weight using four digits. (Example 10 lb = 10.00, 10.5 lb = 10.50)
7. PressEnter— the display returns to the vacuum mode.
8. PressShift/ResetandEnterat the same time.
9. Press6— the known weight on the scale is displayed.
10. Remove the known weight from the scale. “0.00” will be displayed.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSES FOR ABNORMAL PRESSURE
Whenever system's high and/or low side pressure is abnormal, diagnose using a manifold gauge. The marker
above the gauge scale in the following tables indicates the standard (normal) pressure range. Since the stan-
dard (normal) pressure, however, differs from vehicle to vehicle, refer to above table (Ambient air temperature-

TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS
If NG, replace in-vehicle sensor.
Sunload Sensor CircuitEJ S00 1HD
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
The sunload sensor is located on the left defroster grille. It detects
sunload entering through windshield by means of a photo diode. The
sensor converts the sunload into a current value which is then input
into the auto amplifier.
SUNLOAD INPUT PROCESS
The auto amp. also includes a processing circuit which averages the variations in detected sunload over a
period of time. This prevents drastic swings in the ATC system operation due to small or quick variations in
detected sunload.
For example, consider driving along a road bordered by an occasional group of large trees. The sunload
detected by the sun-load sensor will vary whenever the trees obstruct the sunlight. The processing circuit
averages the detected sun-load over a period of time, so that the (insignificant) effect of the trees momentarily
obstructing the sunlight does not cause any change in the ATC system operation. On the other hand, shortly
after entering a long tunnel, the system will recognize the change in sun-load, and the system will react
accordingly.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
SYMPTOM: Sunload sensor circuit is open or shorted. (25 or -25) is
indicated on auto amp. as a result of conducting Self-diagnosis
STEP 2.)
