CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
HINT:
SThis Electrical Throttle Control System (ETCS) does not use a throttle cable.
SThis throttle position sensor uses 2 hall ICs.
The throttle position sensor is mounted on the throttle body and it detects the opening angle of the throttle
valve. This sensor is electronically controlled and uses Hall−effect elements, so that accurate control and
reliability can be obtained. The throttle position sensor has 2 sensor elements / 2 signal output: VTA1and
VTA2. VTA1used to detect the throttle opening angle and VTA2 is used to detect malfunctions in VTA1. Volt-
age applied to VTA1and VTA2 change between 0V and 5V in proportion to the opening angle of the throttle
valve. There are several checks that the ECM performs to confirm proper operation of the throttle position
sensor and VTA1.
The ECM judges the current opening angle of the throttle valve from these signals input from terminals VTA1
and VTA2, and the ECM controls the throttle motor to make the throttle valve angle properly in response to
driver inputs.

NOTICE:
When a malfunction is detected, the throttle valve is locked at a certain opening angle. Also, the
whole electronically controlled throttle operation is cancelled until the system returns to normal and
the ignition switch is turned OFF.
HINT:
SAfter confirming DTCs, use the hand−held tester to confirm the throttle valve opening percentage and
closed throttle position switch condition.
SThe THROTTLE POS means VTA1signal as well as the THROTTLE POS #2 for the VTA2 signal.

HINT:
SIf different DTCs related to different systems that have terminal E2 as the ground terminal are output
simultaneously, terminal E2 may have an open circuit.
SRead freeze frame data usingthe hand−held tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions
when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the
vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air−fuel ratio was lean or
rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

(b) Measure the voltage between the specified terminals of the E13 ECM connector.
(c) Reconnect the throttle body connector. Standard:

Refer to DTC P0 11 5 on page 05 −70.

more but less than 60 ˚C( 140 ˚F) when the engine was started,
and if conditions (a) and (b) are met:
(a) Vehicle has accelerated and decelerated.
(b) Engine coolant temperature remains within 3 ˚C (5.4 ˚F) of
the initial engine coolant temperature (2 trip detection logic)
(2) If the engine coolant temperature is more than 60 ˚C
( 1 40 ˚F) when the engine is started and the vehicle has accel-
erated and decelerated
(3) If the engine coolant temperature sensor records a temper-
ature variation below 1˚C( 1.8 ˚F) successively 6 times (6 trip
detection logic)

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
A thermistor is built in the engine coolant temperature sensor and changes the resistance value according
to the engine coolant temperature.
The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM is the same as those of the intake air temperature
sensor.
HINT:
If the ECM detects the DTC P0115, P0117 or P0118, it operates the fail−safe function in which the engine
coolant temperature is assumed to be 80_C (176_F).
