DTC P0976 SHIFT SOLENOID ”B” CONTROL CIRCUIT LOW (SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE S2)
DTC P0977 SHIFT SOLENOID ”B” CONTROL CIRCUIT HIGH (SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE S2)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Shifting from 1st to 4th is performed in combination with ”ON” and ”OFF\
” operation of the shift solenoid valves
S1 and S2 which is controlled by the ECM. If an open or short circuit occu\
rs in either of the shift solenoid
valves, the ECM controls the remaining normal shift solenoid valve to allow the\
vehicle to be operated
smoothly (Fail safe function).
DTC No.DTC Detection ConditionTrouble Area

ECM
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM commands gear shifts by turning the shift solenoid valves ”ON/OF\
F”. When there is an open or
short circuit in any shift solenoid valve circuit, the ECM detects the problem and illuminates the MIL and
stores the DTC. And the ECM performs the fail–safe function and turns the o\
ther shift solenoid valves in good
condition ”ON/OFF” (In case of an open or short circuit, the ECM stops sen\
ding current to the circuit.)
(see page 05–241 ).

DTC P0751 SHIFT SOLENOID ”A” PERFORMANCE
(SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE S1)
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The ECM uses signals from the vehicle speed sensor and speed sensor NT to detect the actual gear position
(1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear).
Then the ECM compares the actual gear with the shift schedule in the ECM memory to detect mechanical
problems of the shift solenoid valves and valve body.
DTC No.DTC Detecting ConditionTrouble Area
P0751The gear required by the ECM does not match the actual gear
when driving (2–trip detection logic)
Shift solenoid valve S1 remains open or closed
Valve body is blocked
Shift solenoid valve S1
Automatic transaxle (clutch, brake or gear etc.)
ECM
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM commands gear shifts by turning the shift solenoid valves ”ON/OFF”. According to the input shaft
revolution, intermediate (counter) shaft revolution and output shaft revolution, the ECM detects the actual
gear position (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear position). When the gear position commanded by the ECM and the
actual gear position are not same, the ECM illuminates the MIL.
Example:
When either condition (a) or (b) is met, the ECM detects a malfunction.
(a) The ECM commands the 1st gear, but the actual gear is 2nd.
(b) The ECM commands the 2nd gear, but the actual gear is 1st.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
Performing the Intelligent Tester II Active Test allows relay, Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV), actuator and
other items to be operated without removing any parts. Performing the Active Test early in troubleshooting
is one way to shorten labor time. The Data List can be displayed during \
the Active Test.
(a) Warm up the engine.
(b) Turn the ignition switch off.
(c) Connect the Intelligent Tester II to the DLC3.
(d) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
(e) Turn on the tester.
(f) Clear the DTC.
(g) Select the item ”Enter / Power train / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Shift Position”.
(h) Follow the instructions on the tester and read the Active Test.
HINT:
While driving, the shift position can be forcibly changed with the Intel\
ligent Tester II.
Comparing the shift position commanded by the ACTIVE TEST with the actua\
l shift position enables you
to confirm the problem ( see page 05–241).
