When the SRS airbag sensor
detects a collision and the system
operates, the brakes and brake
lights are automatically controlled
to reduce the vehicle speed and
help reduce the possibility of further
damage due to a secondary colli-
sion.
â– When the TRC/VSC systems are
operating
The slip indicator light will flash while the TRC/VSC systems are operating.
â– Disabling the TRC system
If the vehicle gets stuck in mud, dirt or
snow, the TRC system may reduce
power from the engine to the wheels.

4-5. Using the driving support systems
If both the TRC and VSC systems are
turned off, automatic re-enabling will not occur when vehicle speed increases.
â– Operating conditions of Active Cor-
nering Assist
The system operates when the following occurs.
â—ŹTRC/VSC can operate
â—ŹThe driver is attempting to accelerate while turning
â—ŹThe system detects that the vehicle is drifting to the outer side
â—ŹThe brake pedal is released
â– Reduced effectiveness of the EPS system
The effectiveness of the EPS system is
reduced to prevent the system from overheating when there is frequent steering input over an extended period
of time. The steering wheel may feel heavy as a result. Should this occur, refrain from excessive steering input or
stop the vehicle and turn the engine off. The EPS system should return to nor-mal within 10 minutes.
â– Operating conditions of emergency
brake signal
When the following conditions are met, the emergency brake signal will oper-
ates:
â—ŹThe emergency flashers are off
â—ŹActual vehicle speed is over 55 km/h (35 mph)
â—ŹThe system judges from the vehicle deceleration that it is a sudden brak-
ing operation.
â– Automatic system cancelation of emergency brake signal
The emergency brake signal will be can-
celed in any of the following situations:
â—ŹThe emergency flashers are turned
on.
â—ŹThe system judges from the vehicle
deceleration that is not a sudden brak- ing operation.
â– Secondary Collision Brake operat-
ing conditions
The system operates when the SRS air- bag sensor detects a collision while the
vehicle is in motion. However, the system does not operate when components are damaged.
â– Secondary Collision Brake auto-
matic cancelation
The system is automatically canceled in any of the following situations.
â—ŹThe vehicle speed drops to approxi-mately 0 km/h (0 mph)
â—ŹA certain amount of time elapses during operation
â—ŹThe accelerator pedal is depressed a large amount
WARNING
â– The ABS does not operate effec-tively when
â—ŹThe limits of tire gripping perfor-
mance have been exceeded (such as excessively worn tires on a snow covered road).
â—ŹThe vehicle hydroplanes while driv-ing at high speed on wet or slick
roads.
â– Stopping distance when the ABS
is operating may exceed that of normal conditions
The ABS is not designed to shorten
the vehicle’s stopping distance. Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, especially
in the following situations:
â—ŹWhen driving on dirt, gravel or
snow-covered roads
â—ŹWhen driving with tire chains

6-1. Maintenance and care
Maintenance and care
make sure to observe the following
precautions. • Do not use acidic, alkaline or abrasive detergent
• Do not use hard brushes • Do not use detergent on the wheels when they are hot, such as after driv-
ing or parking in hot weather
â– Wheels and wheel ornaments (vehi- cles with matte black painted wheels)
As matte black painted wheels require different cleaning methods than conven-tional aluminum wheels, be sure to
observer the following. For details, con- sult any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
â—ŹRemove dirt using water. If the wheels
are excessively dirty, use a sponge or soft cloth dampened with a diluted neutral detergent to remove the dirt.
â—ŹWhen using detergent, make sure to rinse it off with water immediately.
Then use a soft cloth to wipe off the water.
â—ŹTo prevent the matte black paint from being damaged, make sure to observe the following precautions:
• Do not scrub or polish the wheels using a brush or dry cloth.• Do not use any wheel coatings or
abrasive detergents. • When using an automatic car wash, disable/do not select the wheel brush
function (if such an option is avail- able).• Do not use a high pressure washer or
steam cleaner. • Do not use detergent on the wheels when they are hot, such as after driv-
ing or parking in hot weather.
â– Brake pads and calipers
Rust may form if the vehicle is parked with wet brake pads or disc rotors, caus-
ing them to stick. Before parking the vehicle after it is washed, drive slowly and apply the brakes several times to
dry the parts.
â– Bumpers
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners.
â– Plated portions (if equipped)
If dirt cannot be removed, clean the parts as follows:
â—ŹUse a soft cloth dampened with an approximately 5% solution of neutral
detergent and water to clean the dirt off.
â—ŹWipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth to remove any remaining moisture.
â—ŹTo remove oily deposits, use alcohol wet wipes or a similar product.
WARNING
â– When washing the vehicle
Do not apply water to the inside of the engine compartment. Doing so may cause the electrical components, etc.
to catch fire.
â– When cleaning the windshield
(vehicles with rain-sensing wind- shield wipers)
Set the wiper switch to off. If the wiper
switch is in “AUTO”, the wipers may operate unexpectedly in the following situations, and may result in hands
being caught or other serious injuries and cause damage to the wiper blades.
Off
AUTO
â—ŹWhen the upper part of the wind- shield where the raindrop sensor is located is touched by hand

6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
Maintenance and care
Rotate the tires in the order shown.
Front
To equalize tire wear and help extend
tire life, Toyota recommends that tire
rotation is carried out approximately
every 10000 km (6000 miles).
When rotating front and rear tires which
have different tire inflation pressures,
do not fail to initialize the tire pressure
warning system after tire rotation.
Your vehicle is equipped with a tire
pressure warning system.
While the vehicle is in drive, the
system monitors the fluctuations in
the wheel speed signals that are
output by the speed sensor for the
brake control system.
It informs the driver if it detects a
low tire inflation pressure.
A warning with the tire pressure
warning light and warning buzzer
when there is a known level of low
tire pressure. (Ways of coping:
ď‚® P.313, 324)
However, the system may not be
able to detect sudden tire ruptures
(bursting, etc.).
â– Routine tire inflation pressure checks
The tire pressure warning system does
not replace routine tire inflation pressure checks. Make sure to check tire inflation
pressure as part of your routine of daily vehicle checks.
â– Situations in which the tire pres-sure warning system may not oper-
ate properly
â—ŹIn the following cases, the tire pres-
sure warning system may not operate properly.• If non-genuine Toyota wheels are
used. • A tire has been replaced with a tire that is not an OE (Original Equipment)
tire. • A tire has been replaced with a tire that is not of the specified size.
• Tire chains, etc. are equipped. • An auxiliary-supported run-flat tire is
NOTICE
â– If tire inflation pressure of each tire becomes low while driving
Do not continue driving, or your tires and/or wheels may be ruined.
â– Driving on rough roads
Take particular care when driving on roads with loose surfaces or potholes.
These conditions may cause losses in tire inflation pressure, reducing the cushioning ability of the tires. In addi-
tion, driving on rough roads may cause damage to the tires them-selves, as well as the vehicle’s
wheels and body.

When trouble arises
WARNING
â– When using the compact spare tire (if equipped)
â—ŹRemember that the compact spare tire provided is specifically designed for use with your vehicle.
Do not use your compact spare tire on another vehicle.
â—ŹDo not use more than one compact spare tires simultaneously.
â—ŹReplace the compact spare tire with a standard tire as soon as possible.
â—ŹAvoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shift-ing operations that cause sudden
engine braking.
â– When the compact spare tire (if
equipped) is attached
The vehicle speed may not be cor- rectly detected, and the following sys-
tems may not operate correctly:
• ABS & Brake assist
• VSC
•TRC
• Automatic High Beam (if equipped)
• Dynamic radar cruise control

â– Speed limit when using the com- pact spare tire (if equipped)
Do not drive at speeds in excess of 80
km/h (50 mph) when a compact spare tire is installed on the vehicle.
The compact spare tire is not designed for driving at high speeds. Failure to observe this precaution
may lead to an accident causing death or serious injury.
â– After using the tools and jack
Before driving, make sure all the tools and jack are securely in place in their
storage location to reduce the possi- bility of personal injury during a colli-sion or sudden braking.
NOTICE
â– Be careful when driving over bumps with the compact spare tire (if equipped) installed on the
vehicle.
The vehicle becomes lower when driving with the compact spare tire
compared to when driving with stan- dard tires. Be careful when driving over uneven road surfaces.
â– Driving with tire chains and the compact spare tire (if equipped)
Do not fit tire chains to the compact spare tire. Tire chains may damage the vehicle body and adversely affect
driving performance.
