■If air flow from the vents decreases dramatically
The filter may be clogged. Check the fil-
ter and replace if necessary.
■If the key battery is depleted
The following symptoms may occur:
●The smart entry & start system (if equipped) and wireless remote control
will not function properly.
●The operational range will be reduced.
 Flathead screwdriver
 Small flathead screwdriver
 Lithium battery CR2032
■Use a CR2032 lithium battery
●Batteries can be purchased at any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer, local electrical appliance
shops or camera stores.
●Replace only with the same or equiva-
lent type recommended by the manu- facturer.
●Dispose of used batteries according to local laws.
NOTICE
■When using the air conditioning system
Make sure that a filter is always
installed. Using the air conditioning system
without a filter may cause damage to
the system.
■To prevent damage to the filter
cover
When moving the filter cover in the
direction of arrow to release the fit-
ting, pay attention not to apply exces- sive force to the cl aws. Otherwise, the
claws may be damaged.

As the key may be damaged if

1 Remove the key cover.
To prevent damage to the key, cover the tip of the flathead screwdriver with a
rag.
2 Remove the battery cover.
If the battery cover is difficult to remove,
lift the edge to remove it.
3 Remove the depleted battery
using a small flathead screw-
driver.
Insert a new battery with the “+” termi-
nal facing up.
4 Install the battery cover with the
tab facing up.
Push the entire edge of the battery
cover into the key.
5 Install the key cover.
Align the key cover with the key and
then press it straight into the key.
Make sure that the key cover is securely installed without any gaps
between it and the key.
6 Operate the or switch
and check that the doors can be
locked/unlocked.

1 Release the lock and remove
the mechanical key.
2 Remove the key cover.
To prevent damage to the key, cover
the tip of the flathead screwdriver with a rag.
3 Remove the depleted battery
using a small flathead screw-
driver.
When removing the cover, the elec- tronic key module may stick to the
cover and the battery may not be visi-
ble. In this case, remove the electronic key module in order to remove the bat-
tery.
Insert a new battery with the “+” termi-
nal facing up.
4 When installing the key cover
and mechanical key, install by
conducting step 2 and step 1
with the directions reversed.
5 Operate the or switch
and check that the doors can be
locked/unlocked.

■Battery precautions
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
●Do not swallow the battery. Doing
so may cause chemical burns.
●A coin battery or button battery is
used in the wireless remote con- trol/electronic key. If a battery is
swallowed, it ma y cause severe
chemical burns in as little as 2 hours and may result in death or
serious injury.
●Keep away new and removed bat-
teries from children.
●If the cover cannot be firmly closed,
stop using the wireless remote con-
trol/electronic key and stow the key in the place where children cannot
reach, and then contact any author-
ized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.

If your vehicle needs to
be towed
If towing is necessary, we rec-
ommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer or commercial
towing service, using a
wheel-lift type truck or flatbed
truck.
Use a safety chain system for
all towing, and abide by all
state/provincial and local laws.

Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
■When towing the vehicle
Be sure to transport the vehicle with
the front wheels raised or with all four wheels raised off the ground. If the
vehicle is towed with the front wheels
contacting the ground, the drivetrain and related parts may be damaged.
■While towing
●When towing using cables or
chains, avoid sudden starts, etc.
which place excessive stress on the towing eyelets, cables or chains.
The towing eyelets, cables or
chains may become damaged, bro- ken debris may hit people, and
cause serious damage.
●Do not turn the engine switch off.
There is a possibility that the steer-
ing wheel is locked and cannot be operated.
■Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that towing eyelets are
installed securely. If not securely installed, towing eye-
lets may come loose during towing.
NOTICE
■To prevent damage to the vehicle
when towing using a wheel-lift type truck
●Vehicles without a smart entry &
start system: Do not tow the vehicle from the rear when the engine
switch is off or the key is removed.
The steering lock mechanism is not strong enough to hold the front
wheels straight.
●Vehicles with a smart entry & start
system: Do not tow the vehicle from
the rear when the engine switch is off. The steering lock mechanism is
not strong enough to hold the front
wheels straight.
●When raising the vehicle, ensure
adequate ground clearance for tow- ing at the opposite end of the raised
vehicle. Without adequate clear-
ance, the vehicle could be dam- aged while being towed.

The engine starting system may be
malfunctioning due to an electrical
problem such as electronic key bat-
tery depletion or a blown fuse.
However, an interim measure is
available to start the engine.

One of the following may be the
cause of the problem:
 The battery may be discharged.
( P.556)
 One or both of the battery termi-
nals may be disconnected.
( P.476)
 There may be a malfunction in
the steering lock system.
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer if the problem cannot
be repaired, or if repair procedures are
unknown.
When the engine does not start, the
following steps can be used as an
interim measure to start the engine
if the engine switch is functioning
normally.
Do not use this starting procedure
except in case of emergency.
1 Pull the parking brake switch to
check that the parking brake is
set. ( P.189)
Parking brake indicator will come on.
2Check that the shift lever is in P
(Multidrive) or N (manual trans-
mission).
3 Turn the engine switch to ACC.
4 Press and hold the engine
switch for about 15 seconds
while depressing the brake
pedal (Multidrive) or clutch
pedal (manual transmission)
firmly.
Even if the engine can be started using
the above steps, the system may be
malfunctioning. Have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or
any reliable repairer.
The starter motor does not
turn over (vehicles with a
smart entry & start system)
The starter motor does not
turn over, the interior lights
and headlights do not turn
on, or the horn does not

■When the electronic key does not
work properly
●Make sure that the smart entry & start
system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on. (Customizable
features: P.577)
●Check if battery-saving mode is set. If it is set, cancel the function. ( P.138)
If you lose your keys
New genuine keys can be
made by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable
repairer using the other key
(vehicles without a smart entry
& start system) or mechanical
key (vehicles with a smart
entry & start system) and the
key number stamped on your
key number plate.
Keep the plate in a safe place
such as your wallet, not in the
vehicle.
NOTICE
■When an electronic key is lost
(vehicles with a smart entry &
start system)
If the electronic ke y remains lost, the
risk of vehicle thef t increases signifi-
cantly. Visit any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer immediately
with all remaining electronic keys that were provided with your vehicle.
If the electronic key
does not operate prop-
erly (vehicles with a

If communication between the
electronic key and vehicle is
interrupted ( P.138) or the
electronic key cannot be used
because the battery is
depleted, the smart entry &
start system and wireless
remote control cannot be used.
In such cases, the doors can
be opened and the engine can
be started by following the pro-
cedure below.

system malfunction or other key-related problems
Take your vehicle with all the elec-
tronic keys provided with your vehicle to any authorized Toyota retailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.

Use the mechanical key ( P.117)
in order to perform the following
operations:
1 Locks all the doors
2 Unlocks all the doors

1 Vehicles with a Multidrive:
Ensure that the shift lever is in P
and depress the brake pedal.
Vehicles with a manual trans-
mission: Shift the shift lever to N
and depress the clutch pedal.
2 Touch the Toyota emblem side
of the electronic key to the
engine switch.
When the electronic key is detected, a
buzzer sounds and the engine switch
will turn to ON.
When the smart entry & start system is
deactivated in customization setting,
the engine switch will turn to ACC.
Locking and unlocking the
doors
WA R N I N G
■When using the mechanical key
and operating the power win-
dows or panoramic moon roof (if equipped)
Operate the power window or pano-
ramic moon roof after checking to make sure that there is no possibility
of any passenger having any of their
body parts caught in the window or
panoramic moon roof. Also, do not allow children to operate
the mechanical key. It is possible for
children and other passengers to get caught in the power window or pano-
ramic moon roof.
Starting the engine

3Firmly depress the brake pedal
(Multidrive) or clutch pedal
(manual transmission) and
check that is shown on the
multi-information display.
4 Press the engine switch shortly
and firmly.
In the event that the engine still
cannot be started, contact any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
■Stopping the engine
Shift the shift lever to P (Multidrive) or N
(manual transmission) and press the
engine switch as you normally do when stopping the engine.
■Electronic key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary
measure, it is recommended that the electronic key battery be replaced
immediately when the battery is
depleted. ( P.490)
■Alarm (if equipped)
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the alarm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechani-
cal key when the alarm system is set, the alarm may be triggered. ( P.81)
■Changing engine switch modes
Release the brake pedal (Multidrive) or
clutch pedal (manual transmission) and press the engine switch in step 3 above.
The engine does not start and modes
will be changed each time the switch is pressed. ( P.181)
If the vehicle batter y is
discharged
The following procedures may
be used to start the engine if
the vehicle’s battery is dis-
charged.
You can also call any author-
ized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer or a qualified
repair shop.
