If Trouble Arises
Open the trunk mat.
Remove the belt for securing the flat tire.
Put the flat tire into the trunk on
the left and toward the back.
Fold the rear seatback forward on the right side of the rear seat.
Unlock the rear seatback on the l eft side and assure a clearance to
pass the belt.
Pass the belt through the rear
seatback as shown in the fig-
ure.
After passing the belt through,
return the rear seatback to the
original position.

Pass the buckle through the wheel as shown in the figure and
secure it so that the buckle does not contact the wheel.
Pass the belt through the
buckle, then pull the belt end to
secure the flat tire.
Return the rear seatback on the right side of the rear seatback to its
original position.
Remove the tire blocks and store the tools and jack.
Check the inflation pressure.
Refer to Tires on P. 553.
Have the flat tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible.12

If Trouble Arises
5-Door
Remove dirt and grime from the
mounting surfaces of the wheel
and hub, including the hub
bolts, with a cloth.
Mount the spare tire.
Install the lug nuts with the bev-
eled edge inward; tighten them
by hand.
Turn the lug wrench counterclockwise and lower the vehicle.
Use the lug wrench to tighten
the nuts in t he order shown.
If you are unsure of how tight the nuts should be, have them
inspected at your Toyota dealer.

Remove the luggage compart-
ment cover (if equipped).
Refer to Luggage Compartment on
P. 117.
Remove the belt for securing the flat tire.
Return the rear seatback to its original position.
Refer to Rear Seat on P. 26.
Remove the tire blocks and store the tools and jack.
Remove the center cap by tapping it with the lug wrench.
Thread the belt through the rear
seat as shown in the figure.

Place the flat tire in the luggage
compartment.
Thread the buckle through the
wheel as shown in the figure.
Thread the belt through the
buckle while pressing the tire to
the seatback.
Pull the belt end to secure the
flat tire.12

Insert the luggage compartment
cover from the top of the lug-
gage compartment opening
with the cloth side of the cover
facing outward, and slide it
between the flat tire and the
inside perimeter of the luggage
compartment opening.
Check the tire inflation pressure.
Refer to the specificat ion charts on P. 553.
Have the flat tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
●Do not press the tire pressure m onitoring system set switch after install-
ing the spare tire. The switch is only to be pressed after inst alling the
repaired flat tire or inst alling a replacement tire ( P. 164).
●To prevent the jack and tool fr om rattling, store them properly .

If Trouble Arises
WARNING
■Make sure the mounting surfaces of the wheel, hub and lug nuts
are clean before changing or replacing tires
When changing or replacing a tire , not removing dirt and grime from the
mounting surfaces of the wheel, hub and hub bolts is dangerous. The
lug nuts could loosen while driving and cause the tire to come off, result-
ing in an accident.
■Do not apply oil or grease to lug nuts and bolts and do not tig hten
the lug nuts beyond the r ecommended tightening torque
Applying oil or grease to lug nuts and bolts is dangerous. The lug nuts
could loosen while dri ving and cause the tire to come off, resulting in an
accident. In addition, lug nuts and bolts could be damaged if t ightened
more than necessary.
■Always securely and correctly tighten the lug nuts
Improperly or loosely tightened lug nuts are dangerous. The whe el
could wobble or come off. This could result in loss of vehicle control and
cause a serious accident.
■Be sure to reinstall the same nuts you removed or replace them
with metric nuts of the same configuration
Because the wheel studs and lug nuts on your Toyota have metric
threads, using a non-metric nut is dangerous. On a metric stud, it would
not secure the wheel and would damage the stud, which could cau se
the wheel to slip off and cause an accident.
■Do not drive with any tires th at have incorrect air pressure
Driving on tires with incorrect air pressure is dangerous. Tire s with
incorrect pressure could affect handling and result in an accid ent. When
you check the regular tires’ air pressure, check the spare tire , too.

Jump-Starting
Jump-starting is dangerous if done incorrectly. So follow the proce-
dure carefully. If you feel unsure about jump-starting, we stro ngly rec-
ommend that you have a competent service technician do the work.
Move the booster vehicle so that its battery is as close as pos sible
to your vehicle’s battery.
Make sure that the power such as for the headlights and air con di-
tioner is turned off.
Remove the battery cover.

If Trouble Arises
Turn off the booster vehicle’s engine and connect the jumper cables
in the following order.
Make sure that the jumper cables are securely connected so that they do
not disconnect due to engine vibrations.
1st lead:
Positive (+) terminal on the discharged battery
Positive (+) terminal on booster vehicle’s battery
2nd lead: Negative (-) terminal on boo ster vehicle’s battery
Location shown in the figure (do not connect to the negative (- )
terminal of the battery)
Start the booster vehicle’ s engine and rev the engine.
Start the engine of your vehicle. Run the engines for about 3 min-
utes to temporarily charge th e battery of your vehicle.
Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order of their conn ec-
tion.
Install the battery cover.
Have your vehicle inspected by y our Toyota dealer as soon as pos-
sible.

WARNING
■ Follow These Precautions Carefully
To ensure safe and correct handling of the battery, read the fo llowing pre-
cautions carefully before using the battery or inspecting it.
■ Keep flames and sparks away from open battery cells and do
not allow metal tools to contact the positive (+) or negative ( -) terminal
of the battery when working near a battery. Do not allow the positive (+)
terminal to contact the vehicle body
Flames and sparks near open battery cells are dangerous. Hydrog en gas,
produced during normal battery operation, could ignite and cause the bat-
tery to explode. An exploding battery can cause serious burns a nd injuries.
Keep all flames including cigarettes and sparks away from open battery
cells.
■ Keep all flames and sparks away from open battery cells
because hydrogen gas is produced from open battery cells while
charging the battery or adding battery fluid
Flames and sparks near open battery cells are dangerous. Hydrog en gas,
produced during normal battery operation, could ignite and cause the bat-
tery to explode. An exploding battery can cause serious burns a nd injuries.
Keep all flames including cigarettes and sparks away from open battery
cells.
■ Do not jump-start a frozen bat tery or one with a low fluid leve l
Jump-starting a frozen battery or one with a low fluid level is dangerous. It
may rupture or explode, causing serious injury.
■ Connect the negative cable to a good ground point away from the bat-
tery
Connecting the end of the second jumper cable to the negative ( -) terminal
of the discharged battery is dangerous.
A spark could cause the gas around the battery to explode and i njure some-
one.
■ Route the jumper cables away from parts that will be moving
Connecting a jumper cable near or to moving parts (cooling fans, belts) is
dangerous. The cable could get caught when the engine starts an d cause
serious injury.
