purifyexhaustgases.Itislocatedintheflow
ofexhaustgassesclosetotheenginesothat
itquicklyreachesoperatingtemperature.
Thecatalyticconverterconsistsofamonolith
(ceramicormetal)withchannels.The
channelwallsarelinedwithplatinum/
rhodium/palladium.Thesemetalsactas
catalysts,i.e.theyaccelerateachemical
reactionwithoutbeingusedupthemselves.Lambda-sond
TM
oxygensensor
TheLambda-sondispartofacontrolsystem
intendedtoreduceemissionsandimprove
fueleconomy.Anoxygensensormonitorstheoxygen
contentoftheexhaustgasesleavingthe
engine.Thisvalueisfedintoanelectronic
systemthatcontinuouslycontrolsthe
injectors.Theratioofairtofueliscontinu-
ouslyadjusted.Theseadjustmentscreate
optimalconditionsforefficientcombustion,
andtogetherwiththethree-waycatalytic
converterreduceharmfulemissions(hydro-
carbons,carbonmonoxideandnitrous
oxides).
