Whenyouunlockthecarwithoneofthe
remotecontrolsandchangethesettingofthe

thecarwiththesameremotecontroland
openthedriver’sdoorwithinfiveminutes,the
mirrorswillassumetheirstoredpositions.Laminatedsidewindows
(option)Thelaminatedwindowsinthefrontandrear
doorsimprovesoundinsulationinthe
passengercompartmentandprovidebetter
protectionagainstunauthorisedentry.

LockingandunlockingLockingandunlockingthecar
fromtheoutsideUsingthemasterkeyoritsremotecontrol,all
doorsandthetailgatecanbeunlockedsimul-
taneouslyfromtheoutside.Inthismode,the
doorlockbuttonsandinteriordoorhandles
areinoperative.
Thefuelfillerflapcanbeopenedwhenthe
carisunlocked.Theflapremainsunlocked
for10minutesafterthecarhasbeenlocked.
AutomaticrelockingIfnoneofthedoorsorthetailgateareopened
withintwominutesofunlockingfromthe
outsidewiththeremotecontrol,alllocksre-
lockautomatically.Thisfunctionpreventsyou
fromunintentionallyleavingthecarunlocked.
Forcarswithalarm,seepage108.AutomaticlockingThedoorslockautomaticallywhenvehicle
speedexceeds7km/handremainlocked
untiladoorisopenedfromtheinsideor
unlockedusingacentrallockingbutton.
Lockingandunlockingthecar
fromtheinsideUsingthecontrolinthedoorpanel,alldoors
andthetailgatecanbelockedorunlocked
simultaneously.
Additionally,eachdoorcanbelockedwith
thelockbuttonandunlockedbyopeningthe
doorusingthehandle.
Theaboveappliesonlyifthecarwasnot
lockedfromtheoutside!

NOTE!Themasterkeyblademustbefully

startingthecar.Otherwisethereisariskthat
theimmobiliserfunctionwillpreventthecar
fromstarting.
–Turntheignitionkeytostartposition.If
theenginedoesnotstartwithin5–
10seconds,releasethekey(seealso
"Autostart",page116)andtryagain.
NOTE!Theidlingspeedcanbenoticeably
higherthannormalforcertainenginetypes
duringcoldstarting.Thisissothatthe
emissionssystemcanreachnormal
operatingtemperatureasquicklyaspossible,
whichminimisesexhaustemissionsand
protectstheenvironment.Startingtheengine(Diesel)–Depresstheparkingbrake.
–Automaticgearbox:Gearselectorin
positionPorN.
Manualgearbox:Gearleverinneutralandtheclutchpedalcompletelydepressed.
Thisisespeciallyimportantinseverecold.

position.Asymbolinthecombined
instrumentpanelwillcomeonindicating
thatenginepreheatingisactivated.Turn
thekeytothestartpositionwhenthe
indicatorsymbolgoesout.
Dieselparticlefilter
(certainmodels)Certaindieselcarsareequippedwitha
particlefilterwhichresultsinadditionally
effectiveemissioncontrol.Whentheengine
reachesitsnormaloperatingtemperature
(theengineiswarm)aso-called"regener-
ation"ofthefiltertakesplaceautomatically,
whichmeansthattheparticlescollectedin
thefilterareburnedawayandthefilteris
emptied.
Regenerationtakesbetween10and
15minutes.Duringthistimefuel
consumptionmayincreaseslightly.Winterdriving
Ifthecarisfrequentlydrivenshortdistances
incoldweatherthentheenginedoesnot
reachnormaloperatingtemperature.This
meansthatregenerationofthedieselparticle
filterdoesnottakeplaceandthefilterisnot
emptied.
Whenthefilterhasbecomeapprox.80%full
ofparticlesthenayellowwarningtrianglein
thedashboarddisplayisshownalongwith
thewarningtextSOOTFILTERFULLSEE
MANUAL.
Regenerationshouldbecarriedoutregularly
ifthecarisfrequentlydrivenshortdistances
incoldweatherinordertoavoidimpaired
functionofthefilter.
Startregenerationofthefilterbydriving
thecaruntiltheenginereachesnormal
operatingtemperature,preferablyona
mainroadormotorway.Thecarshould
thenbedrivenforapproximately
20minutesmore.
Toclearthewarningtextwhenregener-
ationiscomplete,switchofftheignition,
removethekey,waitforatleastthree
minutesandswitchtheignitiononagain.
Usetheparkingheater(option)incold
weathersothattheenginereaches
normaloperatingtemperaturemore
quickly.

gearboxWhenparkingonhills,youshouldapplythe
parkingbrakebeforemovingthegear
selectortothePposition.Whenyoustarton
ahill,youshouldfirstputthegearselectorin
thedrivepositionandthenreleasethe
parkingbrake.
Selectalowgearinthegearboxwhen
drivingonsteepinclinesorwhendriving
slowly.Thispreventsthegearboxfrom
upshifting.Thegearboxoilwillbecooler.
Donotuseahighermanualgearthanthe
enginecan"handle".Itisnotalways
economicaltodriveinhighgears.
Avoiddrivingwithtrailerandautomatic
gearboxoninclinesexceeding15%.
NOTE!Anautomaticgearboxoilcoolerfor
trailertowingisrequiredforanumberof
models.
ConsultyourVolvodealerforinformation
regardingyourcar’sspecificationsifthe
towbarhasbeeninstalledafterpurchase.
Assistedstartingwithatrailer
CarsequippedwithaV8enginehavean
integratedfunctionwhichreducestheriskof
significantjerkingandwheelspinwhen
startingwithatrailerhitchedtothecar.
ActivatingToactivate,thecablesfromthetrailermust
beconnectedtothetrailersocketwhichis
fittedbesidethetowbar,seepage132.DeactivatingUnplugthecablesfromtheelectricalsocket.
NOTE!Thefunctionisalsoactivatedwhen
anyotherelectricalequipmentispluggedinto
thetrailersocket,andthecarthenaccel-
eratesmoregentlywhenpullingaway.
Levelling(optiononcarsseating
five,standardoncarsseating
seven)Ifyourcarisequippedwithautomatic
levelling,therearsuspensionalwaysretains
thecorrectrideheightregardlessofload.
Whenthecarisstationary,therear
suspensionsinks.Thisiscompletelynormal.
Whenstartingwithaload,thelevelis
pumpedupafteracertaindistance.

sideofthetyrearethelettersTWI(tread
wearindicator).Whenonly1.6mmoftread
remains,thisbandisclearlyvisible.Change
thetyresassoonaspossible.Rememberthat
tyreswithlittletreaddepthprovideverypoor
gripinrainandsnow.WintertyresVolvorecommendswintertyreswith
particulardimensions.Thesearestatedon
thetyrepressurelabel,seepage151forits
location.Thetyredimensionsaredependentontheenginevariant.Whendrivingonwinter
tyres,thesemustbefittedtoallfourwheels.
NOTE!AskaVolvodealerwhichrimandtyre
typesaremostsuitable.
StuddedtyresStuddedwintertyresshouldberuningently
for500-1000kmsothestudssettleproperly
intothetyre.Thisgivesthetyre,and
especiallythestuds,alongerlifespan.
NOTE!Thelegalprovisionsfortheuseof
studdedtyresvaryfromcountrytocountry.
Treaddepth
Roadconditionswithice,slushandlow
temperaturesplaceconsiderablyhigher
demandsontyresthansummerconditions.It
isthereforenotrecommendedtodriveon
wintertyresthathaveatreaddepthofless
thanfourmillimetres.
Snowchains
Snowchainsmayonlybeusedonthefront
wheels.Thisalsoappliestoall-wheel-drive
cars.
Neverdrivefasterthan50km/hwithsnow
chains.Avoiddrivingonbaregroundasthis
wearsoutboththesnowchainsandtyres.
Neverusequick-fitsnowchainsasthespace
betweenthebrakedisksandthewheelsis
toosmall.

alentchainsdesignedforthecarmodel,
