Starting a cold engine
WARNING
Always make sure all control cables work
smoothly before you begin riding in cold
weather. If the control cables are frozen or do
not work smoothly, you could be unable to
control the vehicle, which could lead to an ac-
cident or collision.1. Apply the brake.
2. Shift the drive select lever into the neutral po-
sition.NOTE:_

When the drive select lever is in the neutral
position, the neutral indicator light should
come on. If the neutral indicator light does not
come on, ask a Yamaha dealer to inspect the
electric circuit.


The engine can be started in any gear if the
brake is applied. However, it is recommend-
ed to shift into neutral before starting the en-
gine.

Mise en marche d’un moteur froid
AVERTISSEMENT
Par temps froid, s’assurer du bon fonctionnement de
tous les câbles de commande avant chaque démarra-
ge. Des câbles de commande gelés ou dont le fonction-
nement est dur risquent d’entraîner une perte de con-
trôle du véhicule, ce qui pourrait causer un accident
ou une collision.1. Actionner les freins.
2. Sélectionner le point mort à l’aide du sélecteur de
marche.N.B.:_

Quand le sélecteur de marche est placé au point
mort, le témoin de point mort doit s’allumer. Si le
témoin ne s’allume pas, faire contrôler le véhicule
par un concessionnaire Yamaha.


Le moteur peut être mis en marche quelle que soit
la vitesse engagée, pourvu que les freins soit action-
nés. Il est toutefois préférable de sélectionner le
point mort avant de mettre le moteur en marche.

Arranque del motor en frío
ADVERTENCIA
Antes de utilizar el vehículo con tiempo frío,
compruebe siempre que todos los cables de
control funcionen con suavidad. Si los cables de
control están helados o no funcionan con suavi-
dad, puede resultar imposible controlar el vehí-
culo, con el consiguiente riesgo de accidente o
colisión.1. Accione el freno.
2. Sitúe la palanca selectora de marcha en la po-
sición de punto muerto.NOTA:_

Al situar la palanca selectora de marcha en di-
cha posición, la luz indicadora de punto muerto
se debe encender. Si la luz no se enciende,
haga revisar el circuito eléctrico en un conce-
sionario Yamaha.


Si el freno está accionado, el motor se puede
poner en marcha con la palanca selectora en
cualquier posición. No obstante, se recomien-
da poner punto muerto antes de arrancar el
motor.

3. Use the starter (choke) in reference to the fig-
ure:
Position 1 : Cold engine start-
ambient temperature below 5°C
(40°F).
Position 2 : Cold engine start-
ambient temperature at 0°C
(30°F)–30 °C (90 °F) and warming
up position.
Position 3 : Cold engine start-
ambient temperature above 25°C
(80°F) and warm engine start posi-
tion.
4. With your foot off the accelerator pedal, start
the engine by turning the key to “START”.NOTE:_ If the engine fails to start, release the key, and then
try starting again. Wait a few seconds before the
next attempt. Each cranking should be as short as
possible to preserve battery energy. Do not crank
the engine more than 5 seconds on each attempt. _

3. Utiliser le starter (enrichisseur) en se reportant à

Position 2 : Moteur froid –

à 30 °C (90 °F) et réchauffement du moteur
Position 3 : Moteur froid –
température atmosphérique supérieure à
25°C (80°F) et moteur chaud
4. Mettre le moteur en marche en tournant la clé de
contact sur “START”, tout en veillant bien à ne pas
mettre le pied sur la pédale d’accélérateur.N.B.:_ Si le moteur ne se met pas en marche, relâcher la clé, puis
effectuer une nouvelle tentative. Attendre quelques se-
condes entre chaque essai. Chaque essai de mise en mar-
che du moteur doit être aussi court que possible afin de
préserver l’énergie de la batterie. Ne pas actionner le dé-
marreur pendant plus de 5 secondes d’affilée. _
3. Utilice el estárter (estrangulador) remitiéndose
a la figura:
Posición 1 : Arranque del motor en frío -
temperatura ambiente inferior a 5°C

Posición 2 : Arranque del motor en frío -

nuevo. Espere unos segundos antes del siguiente
intento. Cada accionamiento del arranque debe ser
lo más breve posible a fin de preservar la energía de
la batería. No accione el arranque durante más de 5
segundos seguidos cada vez. _

5. If the engine is started with the starter (choke)
in position 1, the starter (choke) should be
returned to position 2 to warm up the en-
gine. If the engine is started with the starter
(choke) in position 2, keep the starter
(choke) in this position to warm up the en-
gine.
6. Continue warming up the engine until it idles
smoothly and return the starter (choke) to po-
sition 3 before riding.CAUTION:_ See the “Engine break-in” section prior to op-
erating the engine for the first time. _

Starting a warm engine
To start a warm engine, refer to the “Starting a cold
engine” section. The starter (choke) should not be
used. Press the accelerator pedal slightly.

Jump-starting
Jump-starting the vehicle should be avoided. The
battery should be removed and charged instead.
However, if the vehicle must be jump-started, pro-
ceed as follows.
1. Turn the key to “OFF”.
2. Open the hood. (See pages 8-17–8-19 for
hood opening and closing procedures.)
3. Remove the battery compartment cover.
4. Using a charged 12 V battery, connect the
positive lead of the jumper cable to the posi-
tive terminal of the battery in the vehicle and
the other end of the positive lead to the posi-
tive terminal of the charged battery.
