Driver messages
Ignition is on
This message appears and a warn ing tone
sounds if yo u open the dr iver's door when the
ignition is switched on.
No key identified
This message appears when the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP !* button is pressed if
there is no master key inside the vehicle or if
the system does not recognize it. For exam­
p le, the master key cannot be recognized if it
is co vered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief
case) which screens the radio signal. Electron­
ic devices s uch as ce ll phones can also inter­
fere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake peda l to start the engine .
Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the P or N
position . The engine can only be started with
the selector in these posit ions .
!I Is the key in the vehicle ?
This message appears in a veh icle w ith Con­
ve nience key* if the master key is removed
from the veh icle with the engine running . If
the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping
the eng ine and you also cannot start the en­
g ine again . Moreover, you cannot lock the ve ­
h icle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
a long with a warning signal. It appears if the
selector lever for the automatic transm ission
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ignition . Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, otherwise the veh icle is not sec ured
against rolling away . You also cannot lock the vehicle
using the locking button* on the door
handle or using the remote key.
Turn off ignition before leaving car
Th is message appears if the driver's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switched on. Al­
ways switch off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicle. See also

Shift to P and turn off ignition, otherwise ve­
hicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened w hile the ignition is switched on and
t h e selecto r lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selecto r lever into the P position and
switch off the ignition when you exi t the vehi­
cl e. Otherwise the vehicle could roll. See also
¢ page 84 or¢ page 86.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
started or stopped using the ign ition key and
not the
I START ENGINE STOP I* button.
Electro mechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechonicol parking broke replaces
the hand broke.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - par­
t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopp ing and ap plyin g park ing b rake
.. Pu ll the switch to apply the parking brake.
Starting and automatically relea sing the
par king brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle sta rts to move.
Starting on slope s
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
i ng back . The braking force of the pa rking
brake is not released until sufficient dr iv ing
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
• Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back ­
ward .
• Yo u can re lease the switch once you a re su re
tha t you are deve lopi ng enough d riving
force a t th e wheels by depressing the acce l­
erator.
Depend ing on the we igh t of the rig (vehi cle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, yo u
may ro ll backwa rds as yo u start . You can pre­
vent rolling backwa rds by holding the parking
brake switc h pulled out and accelerating - just
as you would when starting on a hill with a
convent ional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and con ­
tinue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you p ull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct ion is initiated . The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system . The brake performa nce
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~& .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
i ng by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch is pu lled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accele rato r
peda l is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fai led or the brake pedal is obs tructed. .,..

If side ass ist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­

cover the area in front of the senso rs with bike
wheels, st ickers, dirt or other objects . Clean

Automatic

tiptronic
Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected. The power is transferred
by a torque converter .
When a
mode rate d riv in g s ty le is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ica l
driving mode. It w ill then change up early and
delay the downshifts to g ive better fuel econ­
omy.
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rty driving sty le characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) c:> page 12 7.

D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos ition, the transmission can be
operated either in the no rma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the s uitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv ­
ing style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty dr iving .
The vehicle makes fu ll use of the engine's

power. Shifting may become noticeable when
accelerating . Hybrid drive*: electric driving is
not possible .
When the veh icle is stationary o r at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the
lever to D/S out of N.

Automatic Shift Lock {ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

Automatic selector leve r lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
s itions when the ign ition is turned on . You
must p ress the brake pedal and t he release
button to select another position . As a re­
minde r to the drive r, the following wa rni ng
appea rs in the instrumen t clus ter display
when the sele ctor is in P and N:
When stationar y apply brak e pedal while se­
lec ting gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only funct ions when
t h e veh icle is stationary or at speeds be low
1 mph (2 km/h) .
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automat ic Shift Lock is automatically deact i­
vated in the N position .
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when it is moved through
the N pos it ion (go ing from R to D/S) . The lock­
i ng element w ill lock the selecto r lever if t he

lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap ­
proximately 1 second, witho ut the brake ped­
a l being pressed.
R elea se button
The release b utton on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from being accidentally shifted
into certain positions. Pressing this button de ­
activates the selector lever lock. Depending
on the direction of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different positions. The positions are
h ighlighted in the illustration¢ fig.

The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the se lector lever is in the P park posi­
tion . When the ign ition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P pos ition.

8_ WARNING
-Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system .
- To preven t the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload. An indicator lamp
[O] illu­
minates and a driver message appears
Q page 128when the clutch is overload­
ed.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
Q page 226, Engine compartment . 0th-erwise, any increase in engine speed may
set the vehicle in motion, even with the
parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline , do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en ­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D /S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. If may still be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
When the speed is set in the cruise control
system
q page 95, hill descent control is also
activated.
A WARNING
-
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all

Transmission malfunction
[O] Transmission: Press brake pedal and se·

[O] Transmission malfunct ion: You can con ­
tinue driving
There is a system ma lf u nct ion in the transmis ­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair fa­
cility soon to have the malfunction corrected .
[O] Transmission malfunction: Limited driv­
ing funct ionality
There is a sys tem ma lf u nction in t he transmis ­
sion. The transmission is sw itchi ng to emer­
gency mode. Th is mode only sh ifts into cer­
tain gea rs or will no lo nger shift at a ll. The en ­
g ine may stall . Drive to your auth orized A udi
deale r or qualified repair facility immed iately
to have the malf unction co rrec ted.
[O] T ransmission malfunction: Stop vehicle
and shift to park .
Do not continue d rivi ng . Select the P se lect or
l ever position and see yo ur authorized Aud i
dea ler or qualified repair facility for assis­
tance .
(D Note
If the transmiss ion sw itches to emergency
mode, you sho uld take the vehicle to an
author ized Audi dealers hip as soon as p os­
sibl e to have the cond ition co rrected.
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle 's power supply fails , th e selec­
