Digital compass
Activating or deactivating the compass
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear
view mirror.

.,.. To activate or deactivate, hold the® button
down until the red disp lay appears or disap­
pears.
The digital compass only works with the igni­
tion turned on. The directions are displayed as
in itia ls:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East),
SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest),
W (West), NW (Northwest).
(D Tips
To avo id inaccurate directions, do not al­
low any remote controls, electrical sys­
tems, or metal parts close to the mirror. Clear vision 59
Setting the magnetic deflection zone

The correct
magnetic deflection zone must be
set in order to display the directions correctly.

until the number of the set magnetic deflec­
tion zone appears on the interior rear view mirror.
.,.. Adjust the magnetic deflection zone by re­
peatedly pressing on the ® button. The set
mode automatically deact ivates after a few
seconds.
Calibrating the compass
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The compass has to be recalibrated if the dis­
play is wrong or inaccurate .
.,.. Hold the ® button down un til the letter C is
disp layed on the interior rear view mirror .
.,.. Dr ive in a circle at a speed of about 6 mph
(10 km/h) unti l a direction is shown on the
interior rear view mirror.

A WARNING
The d igital compass is to be used as a di­
rectional a id on ly. Even though you may
want to look at it wh ile you are driv ing, you
must sti ll pay attention to t raffic, road and
weather conditions as we ll as other possi­
ble hazards.

General recommen­
dations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
- your body is properly supported thus reduc­ ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and airbag system can offe r
maximum protection

In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for installing a child safety seat on the front passenger's seat. Always follow the informa­
tion regard ing child safety provided in
¢ page 178, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury.
- Always keep your feet on the f loor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion. Th is applies especially to the passen­
gers . If your seating position is incorrect,
you increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident. If the
airbag inflates and the seating position
is incorrect, this could result in persona l
injury or even death.
- It is important for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of a t

least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the airbag system can­
not protect you properly. In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that t hey
can give you maximum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the s teer­
ing wheel o r instrument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your sea t may move unexpected ly, caus­
ing sudden loss of vehicle cont rol and
personal injury . If you adjust yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, yo u are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjus t the dr iver's
seat in the fo llowing manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
that you can easily push the peda ls to the
floor wh ile keeping your knees s lightly bent

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.,. Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as possible with the top of your
head . If that is not poss ible , try to adjust
the head res traint so that it is as close to
this pos ition as possib le

A WARNING
Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot­
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal funct ion . In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
wo uld not be able to brake or accelerate.

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into
the rea rmos t position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner:
• Move the front passenger seat into the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment
range

• Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
position.
Do not ride with the seat reclined.
• Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as possible with the top of your
head . If that is not possible, try to adjust
the head restraint so that it is as close to
this position as possible

• Place your feet on the floor in front of the
passenger's seat .

-Never adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
If you do this while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. Always adjust
the driver's or front passenger 's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or serious injury could result!
- Because the seats can be electrically ad­
justed with the ignition off or with the
ignition key removed, never leave chil­
dren unattended in the vehicle. Unsuper­
vised use of the electric seat adjust­ ments may cause serious injury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never ride in a moving ve­
hicle with the backrest reclined. Safety
be lts and the airbag system only offer
maximum protection when the backrest
is upright and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts .

Seat memory
Memory for driver's seat
Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers
can be stored using the memory buttons in
the driver's door.

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be
stored and recalled through seat memory if
the vehicle is properly equipped.
Storing and recalling settings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
c::> fig. 62 the settings for two different dr ivers
can be stored and recalled
c::> page 63.
The current settings are also automatically as­
signed to the remote control key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle
is unlocked, the settings assigned to the re ­
mote contro l key being used are automatically
recalled.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the IOFFI switch is depressed, the seat
memory is inope rative. When the Memory
function is off , the LED in the button lights up.
A ll the stored settings are retained. We rec­
ommend using the
I OFFI switch and deactivat­
ing the seat memory if the vehicle is only go­
ing to be used
temporarily by a driver whose
settings are not going to be stored.

Storing settings
.,. Adjust the driver's seat.
.,. Adjust the two exterior mirrors.
.,. Press the
ISET I button. The light in the but­
ton will come on .
.,. Now press a memory button

the storing procedure is correct, a confirma­
tion tone will sound.
Recalling settings
.,. If the driver's door is open, tap the corre­
sponding memory button briefly .
.,. If the driver's door is closed, press the ap­
propriate memory button until the stored
position is reached.

When the vehicle is locked , the current set­
tings are stored and assigned to the remote
control key. But the settings stored on
memo­
ry buttons 1 to 2 are not deleted. They can be
recalled at any time. When the vehicle is
un­
locked ,
the settings assigned to the remote
control key are restored.
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save your
individual seat position on one of the memory
buttons. You can recall your settings again
s imply and conveniently by press ing the corre­
sponding memory button . When the vehicle is
locked, these settings are automatically re-as­
signed to the remote control key and stored.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta­
tionary -otherwise yo u risk having an ac­
cident.
- In an emergency the recall p rocedure can
be cancelled by pressing the
IOFFI switch
or by tapping of the memory buttons.

Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
To assign the drive r's sea t settings to the re­
mote contro l key when locking the vehicle, the
function must be activated in the radio or
MMI* .

Rear seats
General information
Safe transportation of pa ssengers on the rear
seats requires proper safe ty precautions.
All passenge rs on the rear seats must be seat­
ed i n complia nce w ith the safety guidelines
explained in
i=:;, page 149 and¢ page 157.

- Occ upants in the front and rear seats

- Do not let anyone ride i n the vehicle
without the head restraints provided.
Head restra ints help to reduce injuries.

- Loose items inside the passenger com ­
partment, can f ly forward in a crash or
sudden maneuver and i njure occupants.
Always store art icles in the luggage com­
partment and use the fasten ing eyes, es­
pecially when the rear seatbacks have
bee n folded down. -

Adjusting seat
The fore-and-a~ adjustment of the seat cush­
ion and the seatback angle can be adjusted.

The head restraints on the front seats can be
adjusted to provide safe support to head and
neck at the optimum he ight. When optimally
adjusted, the top of the restraint should be
level with the top of the head. If that is not
possible, try to adjust the head restraint so
that it is as close to this posit ion as poss ible

straints.

So that the driver can have a better view to
the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not
occupied .
A WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in order to install a child
seat. Install the head restra int again im­
mediately once the child seat is removed.
Driving without head restraints or with
head restraints that are not properly ad ­
justed increases the r isk of serious or fa­
tal neck injury dramatically .

Center armrest
The armrest is adjustable in several stages
and can be moved forward and back.

The cen ter backrest can be folded down sepa ­
rately . This makes is possible to t ransport
l ong objects (for example, skis) inside the ve ­
hicle.
A WARNING
- The back rest must always be secure ly
latched so that the safety belt of t he cen­
ter seating position ca n work p roperly to
he lp prot ect the occupant.
- The back rest must be securely latched in
posi tion so that no items contained in
the l uggage compa rtme nt can s lide fo r­
ward upon su dden braking.
- Always ch eck whether the latc h is fully
e ngaged by pull ing t he seatback fo r­
ward.
- Never a llow safety belts to become dam­
aged by be ing c aught in do or or sea t

latched so that the safety belt of the cen­
ter seat ing pos ition can work properly to
help protect the occupant .
- The backrest must be securely latched in
position so that no items contained in
the luggage compartment can slide for­
wa rd upon sudden braking .
-Always check whether the latch is fu lly
engaged by p ulling the seatback for­
ward .
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in doo r or seat
hardware.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
crash . Inspect the be lts periodically.
Belts showing damage to webbing, bind­
ings, b uckles, or retractors must be re­
placed .
(D Note
-If you move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
cou ld damage the head restraints on the
rear seat.
- Slide the be lt guide on the outside safety
belt all the way up before folding the
backrest back forward. Make sure the
seat belt is not pinched or damaged
when the rea r seat backrest if folded
back. Other objects should be removed
from the rear seat bench to protect the sea tback from damage.
Tie-down rings
There are four tie-down rings in the luggage
compartment for securing Luggage items.

In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that a re loose in the vehi­
cl e w ill turn into heavy m iss iles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehi cle pick up ki­
netic e nergy which var ies with the vehicle and
the weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the
most significant factor.
F or example, in a fronta l collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10 -lb (S kg) object are abo ut
20 times the
normal weight of the item. This means that
the weight of the item would sudden ly be the
equivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can
easily imagine the injuries that an item of that""
