CAN Communication System DescriptionBKS001PO
CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time application. It is an on-vehicle mul-
tiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Many elec-
tronic control units are equipped onto a vehicle, and each control unit shares information and links with other
control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected with 2
communication lines (CAN H line, CAN L line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less wiring.
Each control unit transmits/receives data but selectively reads required data only.

PARKING, LICENCE PLATE AND TAIL LAMPS OPERATION
When the lighting switch is in 1ST position, BCM detects the LIGHTING SWITCH 1ST POSITION (ON) by
BCM combination switch reading function. And then, BCM sends position light request signal (ON) through
CAN communication.
When receiving position light request signal (ON), IPDM E/R turns ON tail lamp relay in IPDM E/R. And then,
parking, license plate and tail lamps go ON. IPDM E/R supplies power

supplied. And BCM detects that the driver side door is locked.
When the trunk lid lock assembly (trunk room lamp switch) is ON (trunk lid is opened), ground is supplied
to BCM terminal 57
through trunk lid lock assembly (trunk room lamp switch) terminal 3
through trunk lid lock assembly (trunk room lamp switch) terminal 1
through grounds B214 and B217.
With ground is supplied, BCM detects that the trunk lid is opened.
STEP LAMP OPERATION
When front door switch (driver side) or front door switch (passenger switch) is turned ON, front step lamp
(driver side) and front step lamp (passenger side) turns ON. Power is supplied
through 10A fuse [No. 21, located in fuse block (J/B)]
to front step lamp (driver side) terminal 1 and
to front step lamp (passenger side) terminal 1.
Ground is supplied
to front step lamp (driver side) terminal 2 and
to front step lamp (passenger side) terminal 2
through BCM terminal 47.
With power and ground supplied, front step lamp (driver side) and front step lamp (passenger side) illuminate.
And, front step lamp (driver side) and front step lamp (passenger side) turns OFF when front door switch
(driver side) and front door switch (passenger switch) are turned OFF.
TRUNK ROOM LAMP OPERATION
When trunk lid lock assembly (trunk room lamp switch) is turned ON (trunk lid is opened), trunk room lamp turn
ON. Power is supplied
through 10A fuse [No. 21, located in fuse block (J/B)]
to trunk room lamp terminal 1.
Ground is supplied
to trunk room lamp terminal 2
through BCM terminal 64.
With power and ground supplied, trunk room lamp illuminate.
And, trunk room lamp turns OFF when trunk lid lock assembly (trunk room lamp switch) is turned OFF.
INTERIOR ROOM LAMP TIMER OPERATION
The interior room lamp timer controls to turn ON/OFF of the map lamp, personal lamps and ignition keyhole
illumination when map lamp switch and personal lamp switch are in DOOR position.
BCM controls the interior room lamp timer according to the following signals.
Key switch signal
Door lock status signal (from front door lock assembly)
Front door switch (driver side) signal
Front door switch (passenger side) signal
Rear door switch RH signal
Rear door switch LH signal
Keyless lock/unlock signal (from remote keyless receiver)
Intelligent Key lock/unlock signal (from Intelligent Key unit through CAN communication)
And when those lamps are turned ON/OFF, the interior room lamp timer executes brightening/dimming control
for maximum 5 seconds. Brightening/dimming control time can be changed with CONSULT-II. Refer to LT- 2 3 3 ,
"WORK SUPPORT (INT LAMP)" .

INTERIOR ROOM LAMP
When the map lamp, personal lamp and ignition keyhole illumination are turned ON by the interior room lamp
timer, power is supplied
through 10A fuse [No. 21, located in fuse block (J/B)]
to map lamp terminal 3
to personal lamp RH and LH terminals 2, and
to ignition keyhole illumination terminal 1.
Ground is supplied
to map lamp terminal 2
to personal lamp RH and LH terminals 1, and
to ignition keyhole illumination terminal 2
through BCM terminal 48
With power and ground supplied, the map lamp, personal lamp and ignition keyhole illumination illuminate.
Timer Operation Condition
When BCM detects driver door is unlocked, the key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder (key switch
OFF), and ignition knob switch is OFF (with Intelligent Key system), it determines that conditions for inte-
rior room lamp timer operation are met, and turns the room lamp ON for 30 seconds.
When BCM detects key is removed from ignition key cylinder (key switch OFF), it determines that condi-
tions for interior room lamp timer operation are met, and turns the room lamp ON for 30 seconds.
When BCM detects driver door is closed, and the key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder (key switch
OFF), and ignition knob switch is OFF (with Intelligent Key system), it determines that conditions for inte-
rior room lamp timer operation are met, and turns the room lamp ON for 30 seconds.
When ignition knob turns to OFF from ON, Intelligent Key unit sends ignition knob switch signal
(ON→OFF) through CAN communication. When BCM detect ignition knob switch is turned to OFF by igni-
tion knob switch signal (ON→OFF), and the key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder (key switch
OFF), it determines that conditions for interior room lamp timer operation are met, and turns the room
lamp ON for 30 seconds.
BCM does not activate the timer even a door other than the driver door is opened.
*: Setting can be changed by CONSULT-II. Refer to LT- 2 3 3 , "
WORK SUPPORT (INT LAMP)" .
Conditions for Canceling Timer
Timer operation is cancelled in any of the following conditions.
Driver door is locked.
Driver door is opened.
Ignition key switch or ignition knob is ON.
INTERIOR ROOM LAMP BATTERY SAVER CONTROL
If the interior room lamp switch is in DOOR position and the lamps left illuminated due to incompletely closed
door, BCM turns OFF the room lamp and ignition keyhole illumination in 30 or 60 minutes to prevent run down
of the battery. (Timer setting can be changed by CONSULT-II. Refer to LT- 2 3 4 , "
WORK SUPPORT (BATTERY
SAVER)" .)
When the ignition key switch or ignition knob is turned from ON to OFF, the timer is activated.
When any of the following door switch signal condition is changed with the ignition key switch in OFF posi-
tion, the timer is activated when the change is occurred.
Door switch signals: front door switch (driver side and passenger side) signal, rear door switch (LH and RH)
signal, front door lock assembly signal, key switch signal, ignition knob switch signal, central door unlock
switch signal and remote control unlock signal.
