you r speed and the distance between
your vehicle and othe r vehicles.
- For reasons of safety, cruise contro l
sho uld not be used in the city, in sto p­
and-go traff ic, on twist ing roads and
w hen road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you cou ld have an acc ident .
- Switch the cruise contro l off temporarily
when d rivi ng in turn ing lanes, highway
exits or in construction zones .
- Please note that unconsciously "resting" yo ur foot on the accelerator pedal causes
c ruise contro l not to brake. This is due to
the control system be ing ove rridden by
the drive r's ac celeration.
{O) Tips
- Vehicles with manual t ransmission: You
can attain the set speed only if the gea r
that is currently engaged wi ll allow it, or
if i t does not tax t he engine and allows it
to run smoothly . There fore shift into a
higher or lower gear in a timely manner.
- The bra ke ligh ts illuminate as soo n as
the b rakes app ly automatica lly.
Changing speed
.. Press the lever in the direction of the 0
r::!v page 99, fig. 108 or in the direction of the
0 to increase or decrease your speed.
.,. Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/ h) by light ly pressing the lever. If you keep the
lever pressed down, you will alter your speed
in 5 mph (10 km/h) increments .
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e.g. if yo u want to
pass someone. The speed you saved earl ier
will resume as soon as you let off of the accel ­
erator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mp h (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes,
the cruise contro l will be turned offtempora -rily. The green symbo
l in the d isp lay t urns
white, the saved speed is retained .
Pre-selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while
the vehicle is not moving .

If you move into the passi ng lane and no veh i­
cle is detected ahead, the adaptive cruise con­
trol accelerates to the speed you have set and maintains it.
Overrid e
You can increase your speed at any t ime by
stepp ing on the acce lerator pedal. After yo u
re lease the accelerator pedal, the system ad­
justs back down to the speed you previously set .
@ Tips
Please note that the amount of accelera­
tion the adaptive cruise control uses de­ pends on the Distance setting selected.
DISTANCE 1 gives you accelerat ion that is
dynamic and sporty . DISTANCE 4, o n the
other hand, g ives more moderate accelera­
tion . For more information about the time

- Please note that if the adaptive cruise
control has begun braking the vehicle
and the driver chooses to brake the vehi­
cle add itionally, the brakes may fee l
"hard" . This is simply due to the pressure
build- up of the initial braking.
- Adaptive cruise control is sw itched off af ­
ter pressing the footbrake . The speed
saved up this point can be resumed. To resume the saved speed, release the
brake pedal and pull the control lever

• Drive at the speed you want. The speed
must be between 20 and 95 mph (30 and
150 km/h).

any objects over an extended time period. For
the time being, the distance to vehicles up
ahead is not being controlled. The ACC system
is not switched off, so increased alertness is
required. The following may be reasons for
the text message ACC Functionally limited:
- The ACC sensor is dirty. The ACC system is
not reacting, or is not reacting correctly, to
vehicles traveling ahead .
- It is possible that you are driving on a road
with very light traffic
without anything at
the side of the road (e.g. guard rails, traffic
signs, trees). As soon as a vehicle is detected
by the system again, it returns to its control
range and the text message disappears.
The ACC sensor is located in the right front
trim grille
¢ page 102, fig . 110. If there is a
loss of operation due to heavy contamination,
this area should cleaned to restore proper op­
eration.
ACC not available
The text message ACC not available appears,
for example, if the temperature of the brakes
is excessive . Adaptive cruise control is tempo­
rarily not available. A warning tone sounds as
a reminder.
ACC not available!
The text message ACC not available! appears
in the event of a malfunction. Adaptive cruise
control is turned off. A warning tone sounds
as a reminder. Have the system inspected by a
qualified dealership.
ACC sensor blocked !
The text message ACC sensor blocked ! ap­
pears when the ACC system can no longer
guarantee safe detection of objects. Adaptive
cruise control is turned off. A warning tone
sounds as a reminder.
To decide whether it is necessary to switch off
the ACC (ACC sensor blocked
!) or if it is only a
temporary condition (ACC Functionally limit­
ed), the system will also takes into considera­
tion the outside temperature and/or the wind­
shield wiper operation. The
ACC sensor is dirty or blocked (e.g. leaves,
snow).
The sensor should be cleaned to restore prop­
er sensor function¢

Engine speed !
The text message Engine speed ! appears in
vehicles with manual transmission when the driver did not shift up or down in time while
using adaptive cruise control braking or accel­
erating, causing the vehicle to exceed or not
reach the permitted limit speed. This causes
adaptive cruise control to deactivate automat­
ically. A chime sounds as a reminder.
Parking brake!
The text message Parking brake! appears if
emergency braking was manually initiated
with the Electromechanical Parking Brake
(EPB). The adaptive cruise control is turned
off. This is accompanied by a warning tone.
Stabilisation program
The text message Stabilisation program ap­
pears if the Electronic Stabilization Program
(ESP) has intervened. In this case the adaptive
cruise control is automatically turned off. This
is accompanied by a warning tone.
Speed
The set speed in mph (Canada km/h) always
appears when saving or changing the speed in
adaptive cruise control¢

Speed too low
The text message Speed too low appears if
the current speed is too low
to set or to hold
the requested speed.
When setting a desired speed, it must be at
least 20 mph (30 km/h). At speeds below 12
mph (20 km/h), the cruise control is turned
off.
In speeds over 95 mph (150 km/h), the sys-
tem remains active and resumes the speed of .,..

95 mph (150 km/h) if the driver removes the
foot from the accelerator .
Selector lever position!
The text message Selector lever position! ap­
pears when the selector lever is moved to po­
sition
N. In thi s position, adaptive cruise con­
trol is not avai lab le .

In certain situations, the braking power of the
adaptive cruise control is not sufficient to
maintain an adequate distance from the ob­
ject ahead . In this situation, the adaptive
cru ise control calls on
you as the driver to take
action.

A WARNING
--Improper reliance on the side assist sys-
tem can cause collis ions and serious per­
sonal injury:
- Never rely on ly on side assist when
changing lanes .
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles un ­
der all conditions- danger of acc ident!
- Side assist cannot detect vehicles in time
to a lert you when they approach from
behind at very high speed, or fall drop
back very quickly.

-The radar sensor's vision can be reduced
or entirely blocked by rain, snow, and
heavy spray. This can result in side assist
not adequately detecting vehicles or, in
some cases, not detecting them at all.
Always keep an eye on the d irection you
are traveling and the relevant area
around the vehicle.
- Please note that side assist indicates
there are approaching vehicles, o r vehi­
cles in your blind spot, only after your ve ­
hicle has reached a driving speed of at
least 19 mph (30 km/h).
- Side ass ist signal does not work around
tight corners (turning radius less than
328 feet or 100 m).
- Side assist is no replacement for the driv­
er's full attention . The driver alone is re­
sponsible for lane changes and similar
driving maneuvers. A lways keep an eye
on the direction you are traveling and the
relevant area around the vehicle.
(D Note
-To ensure that you do not adversely af­
fect side assist, do not block the area on
the rear bumper where the radar sensors
are located with foreign objects (such as
stickers or bicycle racks).
- Make sure that the signal light on the
outside m irror is not blocked by st ickers
or other items.
@ Tips
- Side assist automatically deactivates if it
detects that the radar sensors are
blocked

- The area on the bumper where the radar
sensors are located must consistently re­
main free of snow, ice, and heavy soiling
so that side assist can function properly.

Side assist compares the distance and differ­
ence in speed of detected vehicles with the
speed of your vehicle . Whenever the differ ­
ence in speed and distance is registered as no·
table if you were to change lanes, a signal
light appears on the respective m irror.

The signal can light up i f you are passed by a
vehicle or if yo u are passing another vehicle.
If you p ass another vehicle slowly (difference
in speed less than 9 mp h, or 15 km/h), the
signal light will come on as soon as the other
ve hicle is in your blind spot and is detected by
side assist . When the difference in speed is
greater, the signa l light will not come on.
Informational and alert stage signals

Side assist has two s ignal stages:
- the informationa l stage signal, and
- the a le rt stage signa l.
Side assist helps you by using the appropriate
signal s tage, depending on whethe r or not
you have activated the turn signal, and thus
have indicated that you are or are not chang­
ing lanes.
Informational stage signal
As long as you have not activated the turn sig­
nal, side assist informs you of detec ted vehi ­
cles that are registered as being in a notable
l ocation if you were to change lanes. Whenev ­
er the detected vehicle's difference in speed
and distance is registered by side assist as no­
table, the signal light on the respective m irror
produces muted illum ination.
The brightness of the informational stage sig­
na l is designed not to be as intense, so that it
does not interfere with your view of the road
when you are driving and have no intention of
changing lanes . When you look in the outside
mirror, you can clearly see the informat ional
stage signa l.
Alert stage signal
When you activate the turn signal, and side
assist has detected a vehicle in a notable loca­
tion on that part icular side, the signal light on
this side mirror flashes bright ly . The repeated
brief and b right flashing of the alert stage
signal reminds you to carefully check traffic to
the rea r in the outside mirror and over you r shou
lder, so that you can safely complete the
lane change
