Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake.

- Pull the switch to apply the parking brake ~fig . 104. The

- Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and press the switch at the same time to re lease the parking bra ke.
The indicator light in the switch wil l go out .
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromec hanical park ing brake
w hich replaces the handb rake. The parking brake is d esigned to
prevent the vehicle from ro lling unintent iona lly .

OP-eration
In addit io n to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
ele ct romechan ica l parki ng br ake p rovides various convenience and
safety functions .
Emergency brake
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle can be slowed even if
t he
normal bra kes fail => page 115, "E merge ncy bra king" .
Indicator lights
• If the pa rking brake is applie d with the ig nition turned on , the
indicator light in the instrument cluster (U.S models:
:'.Ii , Canadian
mode ls: © ) and i n the swi tch
(e)) w ill come o n.
• If the parking brake is applied with the ign ition
turned off , the
indicator light in the in strument cluste r (U.S. models:
::'.l, , Ca nadian
models: ©) and in the switch© will come on for about 30 seconds
and then go out .
& WARNING
If the vehicle is stati onary and the transmi ssion is engaged with
the eng ine running, the e ngine should not be speeded up (e.g.
m anuall y from under th e hood ). Otherwi se the vehicle will st art to
mo ve -you run the risk of an ac cident.

If the warning/ind icator light (U.S. models: BRAKE , Canadian mode ls:
(Ci)) ) flashes in the ins trumen t clus ter, t here is a brake sys tem
malfunction. By press ing the [

• You can apply the parking brake at any time -even with the igni
tion turned off. The ignition must be turned on in order to release the
parking brake.
• Occasional noises when the parking brake is applied and released
are normal and are not a cause for concern.
• Th e parking brake goes through a se lf-test cycle at regular inter
vals -when the vehicle is parked. Any associated noises are normal. •
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are
a few things you should do.
When you park your vehicle, do the following
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Pull the switch to apply the electromechanical parking
brake.
- Move the selector lever into the
P position==> &.
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignition key from
the ignition lock .
When you park your vehicle on hills, do the
following
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Pull the switch to apply the electromechanical parking
brake.
- If you are parking headed
downhill, turn the front wheels
toward the curb. -
If you are parking headed
uphill, turn the front wheels
away from the curb.
- Move the selector lever into the
P position.
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignition key from
the ignition lock.
& WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of injury when leaving your
vehicle.
• Never park the vehicle where it can come in contact with dry
grass, spilled fuel or any other flammable materials.
• When parking on hills, always turn the wheels so that the front
wheels will first roll into the curb, if the vehicle should start to
roll.
• Never allow anyone -especially small children -to remain in
the vehicle when it is locked. Locked doors make it more difficult
for rescuers to access the passenger compartment in the event of
an emergency. Danger to life!
• Never leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. Children
could release the parking brake or move the gearshift lever out of
gear. The vehicle could start to roll away and cause an accident.
• No matter what the season is, the temperature in a parked
vehicle can reach dangerous levels.

• Please exercise care when you park your vehicle in parking areas
with parking barriers or curbs. Parking barriers and curbs vary in
height and could damage your bumper and related components as
the front of your vehicle moves over a barrier or curb that is too high,
as you park or as you back out of a parking spot. In order to be sure
that no such damage can occur, you may wish to stop short of having
the front tires of your car touch the parking barrier or curb. .._

• Please also exercise exceptional care when you drive up or down
steep ramps or drive over cu rbs or other obstacles, for which the
vehicle is not designed, because components of the vehicle close to
the ground, such as bumper covers, spoilers and suspension and
exhaust system components , may become damaged. •
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the following:
- Keep the switch pulled and depress the accelerator . The
parking brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
rolling bac kward .
- You can re lease the switch once you are sure tha t you are
deve loping enoug h forward momentum at the wheels as
you depress the accelerator.
Depend ing on the we ight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
sever ity of the incline, you may roll backwards as you start. You can
prevent ro llin g backwards by holding the park ing bra ke sw itch pulled
out and accelera ting - just as you would when starting on a hill with a
conventional hand brake. •
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system fails or
locks.
- Pull the switch and cont inue to pull it to slow your ve hicle
w ith the parking brake in an emerge ncy.
- As soon as you re lease the sw itch or acce lerate, the
braking process stops .
Controls and equip
ment Safety first
If you pull the switch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h),
the eme rgency brak ing f unct io n is ini tia ted. The vehicle is
braked at all four wheels by activat ing the hydraulic brake system .
Brake performance is similar to making an emergency stop=>& .
So that emergency b raking is not act ivated by mistake, an aud ible
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled. As soon as
the swi tch is released, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, eme r
gency braking stops.
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be u sed in an emergen cy, when
the normal foot brake ha s failed or th e brake pedal i s ob structed.
Us ing the park ing b rake to perf orm emergency braking will slow
your v ehicl e as if you had made a full brak e app lic ation . Th e law s
of physics cannot be suspen ded even w ith ESP and it s associated
c omponent s (AB S, ASR , EDS ). In corn ers and when road or
weather condit ion s are bad , a full brake application can cause the
v eh icle t o skid or the rear end to bre ak awa y- r isking an a ccident. •
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution : V ehi cle park ed too steep
Th is message appears whe n the parking brake is applied on an incline
that exceeds abo ut 30%.
I n this case the b raking power of the parking brake may
not be
adequate
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.
Plea se re leas e park ing brak e
This message appears , when a gear is se lected and the accelerator
peda l is dep ressed - release the parking brake . .,

to the traffic situation is absolutely necessary. The following may be
reasons why the message
ACC functionality limited appears:
• The ACC sensor is dirty . The ACC system is not reacting, or is not
reacting correctly, to moving vehicles up ahead in your lane of travel.
• There may be very light traffic on and there is nothing that marks
the side of the road (for example, guard rails, traffic signs, trees) . As
soon as a moving vehicle up ahead is detected aga in, ACC becomes
active again and the message disappears.
Th e ACC sensor is located in the area under the front license plate.
If
the ACC sensor is dirty or blocked, clean the area to restore system
operat ion.
ACC not available
The text message ACC not available appears, for example, if the
temperature of the brakes is excessive. Adaptive Cruise Control is
temporarily not available. A warning tone sounds as a reminder.
ACC not available!
The text message ACC not available! appears in the event of a
malfunction. Adaptive Cruise Control is turned off. A warn ing tone
so unds as a reminder. Have the system inspected by a qualified deal
ership.
ACC sensor blocked !
The text message ACC sensor blocked! appears when the ACC System
can no longer accurately detect vehicles moving up ahead in your lane
of travel. Adaptive Cruise Control is turned off. A warning tone also
so unds as a reminder.
To decide whether it is necessary to switch off the ACC (ACC sensor
blocked
!) or if it is only a temporary condition (ACC Functiona lly
limited), the system w ill also takes into consideration the outside
temperature and/or the windshield wiper operation .
Th e ACC sensor is dirty or blocked (e.g. leaves, snow) . The ACC sensor is located in the area under the front
license plate. If
the ACC sensor is dirty or bloc ked, clean the area to restore system
operation .
EPB activation
The text message EPB activation appears if emergency braking was
man ua lly initiated with the Electromechanical Parking Brake (EPB).
The Adaptive Cruise Control is turned off . Th is is accompanied by a
wa rning tone.
Speed
The set speed in mph (Canada km/h) always appears when saving or
changing the speed in Adaptive Cruise Control=:>
page 122, "How is
the speed stored?" and=:>
page 123, "Changing stored speed".
Selector lever position!
The text message Selector lever position! appears when the selecto r
lever is moved to position
N . In this position, Adaptive Cruise Control
is not available. •

Driver intervention prompt
The driver intervention prompt calls on the driver to take
over the situation.

Deactivating
- Press the button again . T he indicator light o n the b utton
goes out.
The system works at speeds faster tha n 19 mph (30 km/h) .
& WARNING
• Imp roper reliance on the side assist system can cause collisions
and seriou s per sonal injury:
- Never rely only on s ide ass ist when changing lanes.
- Alway s che ck rear view mirror s to m ake sure that it i s safe to
change lanes.
• Side a ssist cannot detect all vehicles under all condition s
danger of accident!
• Side a ssi st cannot detect vehicle s in time to alert you when
they approach from beh ind at very high speed, or fall drop back
very quickly .
• The radar sen sor's
v is ion can be reduced or entirely blocked by
rain , snow, and heavy spray . This can result in side as sis t not
adequately detecting vehicle s or , in some cases, not detecting
them at a ll. Alway s keep an eye on the dir ection you are traveling
and the rele vant area around the vehicle.
• Please note that side assist indicates there are approaching
vehicles , or vehicles in you r blind spot, only after you r vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at lea st 19 mph (30 km/h).
• Side assist signal doe s not work around t ight corners (turning
radius les s than 328 feet , or 100 m).
• Side assist is no replacement for the driver 's full attention . The
driver alone is respon sible for lane change s and s imilar driving
maneuvers. Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle.

• T o ensure that you do not adversely affe ct s ide as sist , do not block
the area on the rear b umper where the radar sensors are located with
fo reign objects (such as st ic kers or b icycle ra cks).
• Make s ure that the signal light on the o utside mi rror is not
bloc ked by stic ke rs or othe r items.

Safety tips
T he s ide assist detection may be limited w hen driving aro und narrow
str eet co rn ers, on hill y stree ts, and under p oor we ath er co nditions . It is possib
le that the radar senso rs may also detect other objects,
such a s high or st agg ere d gu ardr ails.
Side assis t does not measure ac tual lane wid th . T he sys tem assumes
a fixe d lane w idth . Detection in the le ft and rig ht lanes is based on
th is ass um ed lan e width . Wh en drivi ng on narrow ro ads or w hen
driv ing to t he left or r ight of t he cente r of a t ravel lane, it is possib le
that vehicles will be de te ct ed th at are
no t in th e lan e nex t to th e lane
you a re us ing.
& WARNING

block the area on the rear bumper where the radar sensors are
located w it h foreig n objects (such as w ith stickers or bicycle racks).

If the posit ions of the radar sensors have been changed as a result of
a rear end-collision, for instance, have side assist checked by an
authorized Audi dealer for safety reasons. •

Before you move t he se lector lever from t he P position, yo u must
always ap ply the b rake peda l befo re and while de press ing the bu tton
in the handle of the selector lever.
_& WARNING
• Unintended vehicle movement can cau se serious injury.
- When the selector lever is in a driving position, the vehicle may creep, even at idle speed. Therefore do not release the
parking brake or foot brake until you are ready to move,
because power is transm itted to the wheels as soon as a driv ing
po sition i s engaged.
- Do not accelerate while selecting a driv ing position . At this
time the engine must be at idle speed so that undue stress i s
not placed on the clutches in the transm iss ion.
- Remember : • even when stopped briefly with the automatic
transmission in "D", "S" or "R" , engine power is being trans
mitted to the wheels . Your vehicle could "creep " forward or
backward. When stopped, keep the brake pedal fully
depre ssed and use the parking brake if neces sary to keep the
vehicle from rolling .
• If the selector lever is unintentionally moved into N while you
are driving, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and wait for
the engine to return to idle speed before selecting a driving posi
tion.
• Never shift into "R " or "P " when the vehicle is in motion .
• Never get out of the d river's seat when the engine is running.
• If you must get out of the vehicle , move the selector lever
securely into the P position and apply the parking brake firmly .
• If the engine must remain running, never have any driving
position engaged when checking under the hood.
Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and is locked in "P " with the

Otherwi se, any increase in engine speed may set the v ehicle in
motion , even with the par king brake applied. •

T he transmission will automatically select the lowe st gea r ratio when
you sh ift into reverse .
Select
R only when the vehicle is at a full stop and the engine is
running at id le speed=>

Before yo u move the selector lever to R, press both the button in the
handle of the selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same time.

N -Neutral
The tra nsmission is in neutra l in t his position . Shift to this posit ion
for standing wit h the brakes applied~

When the vehicle is s tationary or a t speeds be low 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the footbrake before and while mov ing the
lever ou t of
N .
D -Normal position for dri ving forward
Posit ion Dis fo r normal city and highway driv ing. I t ranges from ze ro
to top speed and all gears shift automatically, depending on eng ine
load, d riving speed and au tomatically selected s hift p rograms.
When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the
lever to
D out of N .
In certa in circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the m anu al sh ift prog ram to man ua lly se lect gea r ratios to
match specific driving conditions~
page 150.
S -Sport position
Select this position for sportier performance. In this position, the
t ransm iss ion will not upshif t as soon, allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher engine speeds to achieve livelier
a cceler ation. When the vehicle
is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always app ly the foot bra ke before and w hile movi ng the
lever to
S out of N.
& WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS=> & in "Driving the automatic
transmi ssion " on
page 146 .

Coast ing downh ill with the transmission in N and t he e ng ine not
running will result in damage to the automatic t ransmiss ion and
possibly the catalytic converter .•

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automati c Shift Lo ck s afegu ards you ag ainst acci
dentally shifting i nto a for ward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to m ove unintentionally .

The sele ct or lever lock is released as fo llows:
- Turn the ignition on.

-Step on the brake pedal. At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the side of the gear selector knob
=:> fig. 140 with your thumb until you have moved the
selector lever to the desired position.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned on. To move the lever from these positions the driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following
warning appears in the instrument cluster display when the se lector
is in
P and N:
When stationary apply footbrake while selecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to D). The locking
element will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N (Neutra l) for
more than approximately 1 second, without the brake pedal being
pressed.
A t speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automatic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N position .
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into certain posi tions . Pressing this button deac
tivates the selector lever lock. Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different positions. The positions are
highlighted in the illustration=>
page 148, fig. 140.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the selector lever
is in the
P pa rk position. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the
P position. •

Kick-down
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to generate
maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond the resistance point
that is reached at full throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine RPM. The engine RPM
will be controlled to produce maximum vehicle acceleration as long
as you continue to press the accelerator pedal beyond this resistance
point .
& WARNING
Be careful when using the kick-down feature on slippery roads.
Rapid acceleration may cause the vehicle to skid. •
Applies to v ehicles: with 6 -speed auto mat ic trans miss ion
Dynamic shift program (DSP)
The automatic transmission is electronically controlled.
The transmission is self adapting and will automatically select the
best sh ift p rogram suited to the driv in g conditions and driving style.
The transmission will select one of the
economy programs when you
drive at a steady speed or a gradually changing speed without heavy
acceleration . This ach ieves optimum fuel efficiency, with early
upshifting and de layed downshifting.
Th e transmission will automatically select the
sporty shift programs
when you dr ive at higher speeds, or w ith heavy acceleration and
frequently changing speeds . Upshifts are delayed to make full use of
engine power . Downsh ifting takes place at higher engine speeds than
in the economy programs . _.,
