Remember that vehicles or other objects will ap pear smaller and
f art her away th an whe n seen in a fla t mi rror. If you use th is mi rro r to
estimate distances of follow ing ve hicles when chang ing lanes, you
could estimate i nco rre ct ly and ca u se an a cci dent .
• If the mir ror ho using is moved un inte ntionally (for examp le, whi le
par king yo ur veh icle), then you m ust fir st f old the mir ror ele ctrically.
Do not read just the mirro r hous ing manually. You could damage the

• If you take the vehicle to an automatic car wash, yo u m ust fo ld the
exterior mirrors flat to preven t dam aging the m. Powe r fol ding ex te­

If th ere should be a malfu nction in the ele ct rical sys tem , you can still
adjust the outs ide mirrors by pressing the edge of the m irror. •

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
Th e ou tside mir rors are d immed toge ther w it h t he a utoma tic
dimming of the ins ide mirror . When the ignition is switched on, t he
m irrors da rken a utomat ically depe nd ing on the light s trik ing t hem
(e .g . headlights from the r ea r) .
W hen the interio r light ing is switched on and when reverse gear is
engaged , the m irrors are sw itche d back to their or ig inal bright ness
(not d immed).
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­
tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma or other respiratory conditions. Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean
water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi­
ately.

• If automatic dimming for the inside mirror i s switched off, the
outside mirrors are also not dimmed automatically .

inside m irror is not h indere d by ot her objec ts. •

Digital compass

Activating or deactivating the compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

To activate or deactivate, hold the@ button down until
the red display appears or disappears .
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The direc­
tions are displayed as initials:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East), SE
(Southeast), S (South) , SW (Southwest), W (West), NW (Northwest).

To avoid inaccurate directions, do not allow any remote controls ,
electr ical systems, or metal parts close to the mirr or.•

Adjusting the seat
Position, angle and shape of the seat can be adjusted
electrically to ensure safe and comfortable seating.
Read and follow the warning notices=> & before you adjust
your seat .
Fore-and-aft adjustment
- Push the switch@ forward or backward=> page 84,

Adjusting seat height
-Pull or push the switch@ up or down.
Front seat cushion up/ down
-Press the switch@ at the front up or down.
Rear seat cushion up/ down
-Press the switch@ at the rear up or down.
Adjusting seat back angle
-Push the switch @forward or backward .
Adjusting the curvature of the lumbar
support
- Push the switch plate © forward or backward to increase
or reduce the curvature.
Adjusting the height of the lumbar support
- Push the switch plate © up or down to position the curva­
ture higher or lower.

& WARNING
•
Adjust the driver's seat only when the vehicle is stationary. You
risk an accident otherwise.
• The power adjustment for the front seats also works with the
ignition switched off or with the ignition key removed. For this reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle -
they could be injured!
• Exercise caution when adjusting the seat height. Unsupervised
or careless seat adjustment can pinch fingers or hands causing
injuries.
• While the vehicle is moving, the seat backs of the front seats
must not be inclined too far to the rear because the effectiveness
of the safety belts and the airbag system is severely compromised
- there is a risk of injury.
• To reduce the risk of injury
in the case of sudden braking or
accident, front passengers must never ride in a moving vehicle
with the seatback reclined. Safety belts and the airbag system
only offer maximum protection when the seatback is upright and
the safety belts are properly positioned on the body. The more the
seatback is reclined, the greater the risk of personal injury from an
incorrect seating position and improperly positioned safety
belts. •

Removing ashtray insert
Press the fron t of the ope n lid downward in the direction

Reinstalling ashtray insert
-Open t he lid on t he ash tray insert a nd press the insert i nto
t h e housing as far it ca n go .

Never put wa ste paper in the ashtray . Hot ashe s or other hot
obje cts in the ashtray could set waste paper on fir e.•
Outlet
An elect rical accessory can be con nected to the 12-vol t
power outlet.

- Re move the cover from the outlet=> fig . 102 .
- Lift up the cover for the outle t => fig. 103.
- Plug in appliance to be used.
The outlet may be used for 12 -volt appliances with maximum
consumption of up to 10 0 wat ts, s uch as a flash light, small vacuum
cleaner, etc .
T here may be j ust one out let at the front of the ce nter console
depending on yo ur model. There are two additional 12-volt outlets in
the rear center console .
Before you purchase any accessor ies, always read and follow t he
information in=>
page 368, "Additional accessor ies and parts
replacement ".
& WARNING
The outlet plus any appliance s plugged into it rem ain functional
even if the ignition i s switched off or the ignition key is removed.
Never leave children in side the vehi cle w ithout supervision.

Warm and cold -

The left display indicates the temperature selected for the driver's
side, t he r igh t display ind icates the temperature se lec ted for the
passenger's side.
T he settings you make are shown in the MMI display for a few seconds
when MMI is tu rned on.
Each function is turned on or off by briefly pressing the corresponding
bu tton. The indicato r light in the b utton ill uminates when the func­
tion is act ive.

Synchronizing climate control
By pressing and holding the regulator on the drive r's side, the
temperature setting on the driver's side can be sw itched to the
p assenge r's s ide, an d vi ce ve rsa. T he new temper ature is s hown in the
display.

By press ing and hold ing t he regulato r o n the dr ive r's side, the
temperat ure sett ing on the driver 's side can be switched to the
passenger 's side and to t he oute r rear seats . The new temperat ure is

B y simu ltaneously p ressing and ho ldi ng t he regu la tors o n the drive r's
side and front passenger's side, the temperature setting on the
dr iver's side can be switc hed to the fron t passenger's side . The new
tempe ra ture is shown in the disp lay .

The grille on the contro ls must remain unobstructed and mus t not be
taped over. Measuri ng sensors are located behind it.•
Turning on and off [ ON/OFF]
Turning the air conditioning on
-Press the [ O N/OFF] butt on , or
- Press th e [A UTO] b utto n.
Turning the air conditioning off
- Press t he [ O N/OFF] button to switch the ai r co nditio ning
o ff and to b lock the air supp ly from the outside.
The air conditioner turns back on when you press the temperature
regulator
or one o f the b uttons.
[I] Tips
With the ignition turned o ff, you can ac tivate t he resid ua l heat func ­
tion by pressing the
I ON/OFF ) button. The residual heat from the
coo lant can be used to heat the vehicle interior.•

Easy entry feature
The easy entry feature makes it easier to enter and e xit
the vehicle by automatically adjusting the steering
wheel.
Press the button®~ page 123, fig. 120 to turn the easy
entry feature on or off .
When the easy entry feature is turned on (button depressed), the
steering wheel moves up to the parked position when the ignition is
t urned off . After you enter the vehicle, the steer ing wheel moves to
the stored pos ition as soon as you t urn on the ig nition .
Easy entry feature on vehi cles with memory seat *
For the stored steering whee l position to be recalled, t he driver's seat
memory must be switched on ( ( ON/OFFI switch in depressed posi­
tion) .
If the easy e ntry feature i s sw itched off, the steer ing wheel mov es to
the stored pos ition as soon as you press the seat memory button. •

Tu rn the ignit ion key to this position and re lease i t. On veh icles wi th
a diesel engine *, the system can preheat in this position.

The engine starts with the key in this position. Major e lectrical loads
are tempo rar ily tur ned off .

& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lock while the vehicle
is moving. The steering wheel will lock , cau sing loss of control.
• If you ha ve to leave your vehicle, even for ju st a minute, alw ays
remove the ignition key and take it with you. This i s especially
important if you are going to leave children unattended in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or use other vehicle c ontrols . Unsupervised us e of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows) can cause serious personal inju ries.

• If the ~ symbol in the display blinks, there is a malfunction in the
electronic stee ring column lock. Follow the instr uctions in
~ page 31, "Steering malfu nction i" .

Ignition key safety lock

tion. After you have removed the key, the selector lever is locked and

A cold engine may sound loud after it has been started . This is due to
t he hydra ulic valves building up o il pressure . This is norma l an d is not
a need for concern .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10 seconds
and then try to rest art the engi ne about 30 seco nds la ter.
Glow plug system*
Diesel engines are eq uipped with a glow p lug system whose
preheating t ime is controlled
by the coo lant and outs ide tempera­
ture. Sta rt the engi ne
immediat ely after the glow pl ug ind icator lig ht
switches off.
Th e g low pl ug indica tor light w ill on ly ill uminate fo r approximately 1
second when the engine is warm or the outside temperature is higher
t han 46 ° F (8 °C). That means you can sta rt the eng ine
immediately .
& WARNING
Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enclosed area.
Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon mono xide, a color­
le ss and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled .
• Never leave the engine idling unattended. An unattended
vehicle with a running engine poses a danger of person al injury or
theft.

• Avoid high e ng ine speeds, fast a cce le ration or heavy eng ine loads
w hile the engine is still co ld. This co uld damage the engine .
• The eng ine ca nnot be sta rted by p ush ing or tow ing the veh icle.
'ii? For the sake of the environment
T o avoid unnecessa ry engine w ea r and to reduce exhaust em iss ions,
do not let your vehicle stand and warm up . Be ready to drive off imme ­
diately after sta rting yo ur vehicle . M aintain mode rate speed u ntil the
eng ine is complete ly warm . Remember, the engine performs best at
operat ing temper ature. •
Stopping the engine
- Tur n the ign it ion key to position @ ==> page 125, fig. 12 2.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop .
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
i s running . With the ignition turned off, you have to apply more
force when steering or b raking. Since you cannot stee r and stop
normally, this can lead to accidents and serious injuries.
• The radi ator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minute s even
after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the engine coolant heats up because of intense sunlight or heat build-up in the engine
compartment. ..,,

Do not stop the engine immediately after hard or extended driving .
Keep the engine running for approximately two minutes to prevent
excessive heat build-up.•

Starting the engine with the {START) button
This button switches on the ignition and starts the
engine.

The [START] button is provided with two-stage operation

Switching the ignition on
- Press the [ START] button once to the first stage to switch
on only the ignition .
Gasoline engine: Starting the engine
-Step on the brake.

engine.
Diesel engine: Starting the engine
- Step on the brake.
- Move the selector lever to the P or N position =:>& .
- Press the
[START] button down to the first level to begin
the preheating process. The glow plug indicator light
illuminates when the glow plug system is active.
- When the indicator light switches off, press the
[START] button down to the second level to start the
engine.
After a cold engine is started, there may be a brief period of increased
noise because oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve
adjusters . This is normal and not a cause for concern .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10 seconds
and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
Glow plug system*
Diesel engines are equipped with a glow plug system whose
preheating time is controlled by the coolant and outside tempera­
ture . Start the engine
immediately after the glow plug indicator light
switches off.
Th e glow plug indicator light will only illuminate for approximately 1
second when the engine is warm or the outs ide temperature is higher
than 46 °F (8 °C). That means you can start the engine
immediately.
& WARNING
Never allow the engine to run in confined spaces· danger of
asphyxiation.

• T he engine cannot be started by p ushing or tow ing the vehicle.
Do not a llow the engine to warm up with the vehicle stationary . Start
dr iving right away. In this way yo u avoid unnecessary emiss io ns.

Emergency OFF function
If necessary, the en gine can be sw itched off w ith the se lec tor lever in
the
R, Dor S positions . To do so, step on the brake pedal and press
and hold t he [STOP) but ton (veh icle speed mus t be less than
6 mph
/ 10 km/h .
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
c omplete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine

• For safety rea sons , you should always park your vehicle with

switched off . It can al so swit ch on again after some time if the
coolant temperature r ises as the result of a heat buildup or if the
engine i s hot and the engine compartment is additionally he ated
by the sun's rays.

If the eng ine has bee n under heavy load for an extended period, heat
builds up in the engine compartment after the engine is switched off
- there is a risk of damaging the eng ine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for abo ut 2 min utes befo re switching it off .•
