If the climate control system is operating
in cooling mode, a ir flows primarily from
the outlets in the center conso le and in the
door pillars. To achieve adequate cooling,
you should never close the outlets com­
pletely .
Using climate control economically
Using the climate controls prudently can help
save fuel.
When you use the air conditioner, engine pow­
er is reduced and fuel consumption increases.
To save fuel, you should use the air condition ­
e r only when necessary. Also please note the
following points :
.,. To save fuel, turn off cooling mode by press­
ing the
I AC ! button (indicator light goes

.,. In add ition, if you open the window or the

turn off cooling mode by p ress ing the

yourself with the rear air conditioning con­
trols.

The left display indicates the temperature se­
lected for the rear left passenger, the right
display indicates the temperature selected for
the rear right passenger . If the settings for
seat heating *, air distribution or the air condi­
tioning fan are changed, the relevant indica­
tor will appear br iefly on the display .
Funct io ns are set by ro tating the control or
are switched on and off by tapping the but­
tons. The indicator light in the button illumi­
nates when the function is active.

for all seasons.

Automatic operation ensu res constant tem­
pe ratures in the inter io r and dehum idifies the

to reach or maintain the desired inter ior tem­
perat ure as quickly as possible . Fl uctuations
in exterior t emperat ure and the effects of temperature from the position of the s
un are
compensated for automatically .
T his operating mode works on ly in the adj ust­
able temperature range, from
60 ° F (+ 16 °C )
to
84 °F ( + 28 °C) . If a temperature below 60
°F (+ 16 °C) is se lected, LO appears in the dis­
play . At temperatures above
84 ° F (+ 28 °(),
HI is displayed . At bot h extreme sett ings, cli­
mate control runs contin uously at maximum
cooling o r heating power . There is no temper­
ature regulat ion.
Setting rear temperature

for the rear left and right sides .

The automatically preset fan speed can be re­
duced or increased .

"' Rotate the regulator to the des ired fan

The climate control system automatically reg­ u lates fan speed depending on inter ior tem ­
perature. You ca n adjust the volume of air p ro­
duced by the fan to your own requirements .
(D Tips
It is possible that the fan speed may
change automatically. This occurs to en­
su re that the des ired temperature setting
i s reached as quickly as possible.

Ignition lock and ignition switch
Ignition key positions
The engine con be started or turned off with
the ignition key.

The ignition key can be inserted into the igni ­
tion switch in this position . This automatically
unlocks the steering column lock . When the
ignition key is removed, the steering column
lock is automatically locked

Turn the ignition key to this position and re­
lease it. On vehicles with a d iesel engine*, the
system can preheat in this position .
Starting the engine@
The engine starts with the key in this position.
Major electrical loads are temporarily turned
off.
Ignition off@
Turn the ignition key to this position and re­
lease it.
A WARNING ,~ ~
- Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steering wheel will lock, causing loss of
control.
- If you have to leave your vehicle, even for
just a minute, always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is especially
important if you are going to leave chil-

dren unattended in the vehicle. The chil­
dren could start the engine or use other
vehicle controls. Unsupervised use of ve­
hicle controls (for example, power win­
dows) can cause ser ious personal inju­
ries.

steering column lock . Follow the instruc­

-If you release the ignition key in position
@, the key automatically returns to posi­
tion (!).
- If you open the driver's door when the ig­
nition is sw itched on, a buzzer sounds
and the message
Ignition is on appears
in the instrument cluster display. Please
switch the ignition off.
- T o prevent malfunctions in the ign ition
lock, remove any dirt or deposits from
the key bit so that they do not enter the
ignition lock.
Ignition key safety lock
The ignition key con only be removed when
the selector lever is in the "P" (Pork) position.
After turning off the ignition, the ignition key
can only be removed from the ignition lock
when the selector lever is in the "P" (Park) po­
sition. After you have removed the key, these­ lector lever is locked and cannot be moved.

- Never turn off the engine until the vehi-
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and servotronic only
work when the engine is running. With
the ignition turned off, you have to apply mo re force when steeri ng or brak ing.
Since you cannot steer and stop normal­
ly, t his can lead to acc idents and se rious
. . . in Juries.
- For safety reasons, you sho uld a lways
pa rk your vehi cle wit h the selector lever
i n P. O therwise, the vehicle could inad­
ver ten tly roll aw ay.
- Afte r the eng ine has been switch ed off,

up to 10 minu tes -even with the igni tion
switched off . It can also switch on again
after some t ime if the coolant tem pera ­
ture rises as the resu lt of a heat b uildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compa rtment is additionally heated by
the sun's rays.

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended pe rio d, heat b uilds up in
the engine compartment after the engi ne
i s sw itched off -there is a r isk of damag ing
the e ng in e. A llow th e engi ne to run a t id le
fo r abo ut 2 minutes befor e switching it

This message appears when t he I STAR T I but-
ton is pr essed if there is no master key ins id e
the vehi cle or if t he system does not recogn ize

After releasing the brake pedal , the brake
power is held for a
brief moment to prevent
the vehicle from rolling back when starting. At
this time, you can easily beg in to move your
veh icle.
A WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immediately
after releasing the brake pedal, under
certain circumstances, the vehicle would
begin to roll backward . Depress the
brake pedal immediately or engage the
park ing brake.
- Should the engine stall, depress the
brake pedal immediately or engage the
par king brake.
- In order to prevent the vehicle from ro ll­
ing back un intentionally when sta rting in
stop-and-go traffic, keep the brake pedal depressed for a few seconds before d riv­
ing off.
- When you leave the vehicle -even if only
briefly - , switch off the ignition and
make sure to remove the ignition key . Al­
so engage the
p a rking b rake to prevent
your vehicle from rolling unintentionally. Th is particu larly applies if ch ildren are
left in the veh icle -danger of acc ident!
Cruise control
Switching the system on
The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at
20 mph
(30 km/h).

T he display may vary depend ing on the type of
display in your veh icle. The indicato r light
@;\1)~1~ (US model)/ B (Canadian model) w il l
also light up in the instrument cluster.
_& WARNING
- Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on. You are
always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your veh icle and
other vehicles .
- For safety reasons, the cruise contro l
should not be used in the city , in stop­
and -go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road condit ions are poor (such as
ice, fog , gravel , heavy rain and hydro­
p lan ing) -risk of accident.
- Turn off the cruise control temporarily
when enter ing turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertently "resting"
your foo t on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise contro l not to bra ke. This is
because the c ruise control is overridden
by the driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control whe n driving
off -road or on unpaved roads. The c ruise
contro l is intended for use only when the
vehicle is being operated on paved roads,
and is not suitable for use off-road or on
unpaved roads.

The cruise control cannot maintain a con­
stant speed when driving downhill. The ve­
hicle will accelerate under its own weight.
Downshift to a lower gear or use the
brakes to slow down.
Changing speed
.. To increase/decrease the speed in incre­
ments , tap the lever in the
010 direction

.. To increase/decrease the speed qu ickly,
hold the lever in the
010 direction until
the desired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e .g. if you want to
pass someone . The speed yo u saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­
ator peda l.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes,
the cruise contro l will turn off temporarily.
The symbol will go out but the saved speed
will be retained.
Presetting your speed
You con preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving .

if it is not too fast for the c urrent traffic
conditions -risk of an accident!

Adaptive cruise control Speed and distance
control system
Description
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive cruise cont rol
The adaptive cruise control driver assistance
program is a combined speed and distance
control system .

Adapt ive cruise control can he lp ma ke driv ing
more relaxed and less tiring , particularly dur­
i n g long trips on interstates or other hig hways
that are genera lly st raight. The system can al­
so ass ist in stop and go traffic .
The adaptive cruise co ntrol works within a
speed range be tween 0 and 95 mph (150 km/
h). Set ACC to maintain a constant , legal trav ­
el speed between 20 and 95 mph (30 -150
km/h) that is appropriate for prevailing traffic
conditions. Select a following distance to the
veh icle ahead and ACC will adjust your speed
to maintain that d istance down to a stop . At a
speed below 20 mph (30 km/h), the min imum
speed setting of 20 mph (30 km/h) will be se­ l ected automati ca lly.
Adaptive cruise control has technical limita­
tions that you must know, so p lease read th is
section carefully , understand how the system
wo rks and use it properly at a ll times.

What is important for you to know
The adaptive cru ise contro l is set w ith system­
spe cified lim its; that is, as a driver, you will
have to adjus t the speed and distance to the
vehicle ahead in some instances

A WARNING
Imp roper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injury.
- Always remember that the adaptive cru ise contro l has limits -it will not slow
the vehicle down or ma inta in the set d is ­
tance when you dr ive towards an obsta­
cle or someth ing o n or nea r the road that
is not movi ng, such as ve hicles stopped
in a tra ffic jam, a sta lled or d is ab led vehi­
cle.
- Always remembe r that the adaptive
cru ise con tro l canno t detect a vehi cle
that is driving towards yo u in your traffic
lane and that it cannot detect narrow
vehicles s uch as motorcycles and bicy­
cles.
- Never drive at speeds that are too fast
for traffic, road and weather conditions.
- Never follow a vehicle so closely that yo u
cannot stop your vehicle safely. The
adaptive cruise control cannot s low or
brake the vehicle safely when you follow
another vehicle too close ly. Always re­
membe r that the adaptive cruise control
has a braking powe r th at is o nly about
30% of the veh icle 's maxim um braking
ab ility. The a uto mat ic bra kin g f unction
canno t bring the veh icle to a s udden or
emergency stop . Always be p repared to

sponds only after the distance measurement has been made. If a measurement is not pos­
sible, the system cannot respond and w ill not
react to a vehicle or someth ing else up ahead.
Open road
When the road is clear, the adaptive cruise
contro l works like cr uise control. It maintains
a constant target speed specified by the driv­
er.

If a slowe r vehicle driving ahead is detec ted,
the adaptive cruise contro l decelerates (within
the limits of the system)

If the vehicle in front accelerates, adaptive
cruise control also accelerates up to the speed
that you have set.
If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, ACC will
slow your vehicle down and to a complete
stop if this is possible w ith in the system's lim ­
its and capabilities . ACC will not make an
emergency stop. The text message

must depress the brake pedal to prevent the
vehicle from moving forward or "creeping". Depressing the brake pedal turns
off ACC.

Passing another vehicle
If you move in to the passing lane and no ve hi­
cle is detected ahead, the adaptive cr uise con­
trol acce le rates to the speed you have set and
maintains it.
Overr iding ACC
You can in cr ease yo ur speed at a ny time by
stepping on the accelera tor ped al. A fter you
release the accelerator peda l, the system ad­
justs back down to the speed you prev ious ly
set .
Reducing stopp ing distance
If the radar sensor detects that the d istance
to the vehicle a head is less than de fined m ini­
mum distance, the brakes are automatically
prepared fo r emergency braking by the driver .
The brake pads are moved very close to the brake d iscs without actually braking the vehi­
cle. This brake assistant feature reacts more
quick ly to the dr ive r's brak ing, and also works
when adapt ive cruise control is off . The stop­
ping distance is reduced as a result of th is ad­
vance brake p reparation . Th is fun ction does
not perform any emergency b rak ing mane u­
vers by itse lf; the dr iver mus t always apply the
brakes.
A WARNING
If ACC initiates a braking maneuver, the brake pedal w ill be retracted. Inter ference
with the brake peda l can prevent ACC from
slowing the veh icle down and cause a
crash and serious personal injury.
- Never put anything in the driver's foot­
well or let anyth ing fall into it. An object
in the driver's footwe ll can interfe re with
the peda ls and prevent the acce le rator
from being used to override ACC or pre­
vent ACC from being switched off when
the brake pedal is depressed and also
prevent the vehicle from being slowed
down or stopped .
- On ly use floor mats that keep the area
around the peda ls free and that can be
securely fastened to the footwell .

Reactivating control

As long as a speed is saved the set desired
speed will be displayed in the LED display in
the speedometer by one or two illuminated
red light diodes . When the control function is
resumed the adaptive cruise control acceler ­
