The ill umi nat ion fo r th e i nstru me nt cl uster
lights up whe never yo u switch on the i gni ­
tion with t he
vehicle headlights off . As
the daylight fades, the instrument cluster illumi nat ion likewise dims automatically
a n d w ill go out completely when t he out­
side light is very low. This feat ure is meant
to remind you to switch on the headlights
w hen o utside lig ht con dit io ns become
poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolant gauge q page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when the ignition is on. To p revent
damage to you r engine, please note the fol­
lowing impor tant po ints:
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at or close to
the bottom of the gauge, the engi ne still has
not reached its operat ing temperature . Avoid
high eng ine speeds, heavy eng ine loads and
heavy th rottle a pplicat io ns.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operat ing
temperature, the needle w ill move into the
midd le of the gauge and rema in the re. If th e
engine is worki ng ha rd at high outside tem­
peratures, the needle may rise up. This is no
need to worry as long as the. warni ng lig ht
i n the i nstr ument cluster does not ill uminate.
Warning light in the instrument cluster
When the. warning lig ht in the instr ument
cluster s tarts to flash, th is can mean one of
two things : either the coo lant
temperatur e is .,..

too high, or the coolant level is too low

If the needle is well in the upper area of the
ga uge , the coolant temperature is too high.
Stop the vehicle , switch the eng ine off and
allow the engine to cool.
If the warning light
comes on again after driving a short distance,
contact an authorized dealer.
A WARNING
- Always observe the warning in
¢
page 256, before opening the hood
and checking the engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment.
You could bu rn yourself. Let the engine
cool off first until you can no longer see
or hear steam or coolant escaping.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accessories
i n front of the a ir inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the radiator. At h igh outside
temperatures or high eng ine load , the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
properly distribute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this cou ld reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­ heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
ass istance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
The tachometer @¢ page 10, fig. 3 is the left
of the two large clock-type displays.
The engine turns at a speed 1,000
times the
single digit in the display, e.g . if the needle is
pointing at the "2" the engine is turning at
2,000 RPM.
If engine RPM drops be low 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area , move these­
lector lever to position D (Drive) or ease your
foot off the accelerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle should not move
into the red range. If it does, then only for
a very short per iod of t i me. You could
damage your engine by driving at high RPM .
@) For the sake of the environment
Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise .

The date, time of day, and time and date for ­
mat can be set in the MMI. You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual.
(D Tips
-When open the driver door, the time,
date and odometer are disp layed for an

!CHECK I button q page 12 while the ig­
nition is sw itched off.

Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed, and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The odometer and trip odometer are located
inside the speedometer.
- USA mode ls - Miles
- Canada models -Kilometers
You can switch the display from miles to kilo­ meters and vice versa via the MMI. You can
find out more in the MMI manual.
Lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of mi les (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the tota l number
of mi les (kilometers) driven since you last re­
set the odometer to zero. You can use this od­
ometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (k ilometers) you have driven for a
single trip or errand. The last digit indicates
1/10 of a mile (100 meters).
You can reset the trip odometer to zero by
pressing the Reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
dEF will appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on. Contact your au ­
thorized Audi dealer to have the problem cor­
rected.
(D Tips

I CHECK I button c> page 12 while the ig­
nition is switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fue l gauge only works when the ignition is
on .
When the needle reaches the reserve mark,
the
c> page 35 mJ symbol appears in the in­
strument cluster d isplay as well as the mes ­
sage
Please refuel. This message is meant to
remind you to
refuel.
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in
.:> page 325 .
@ Note
Never run the tank completely dry. An ir­
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter the exhaust
system. The catalytic converter could then
overheat and be damaged.

The !CHECK I button performs the follow ing

can be switched on for about 30 seconds by
pressing the

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ¢ page 30 constant­
l y monitors certai n ind iv idual funct ions and
components of the ve hicl e when the ignit ion
is t urned on and when the vehicle is moving.
W ith the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Au to-C hec k seque nce" by p res sing the
I CH ECKi button. Yo u ca n pe rform an A uto­
Check sequence when the vehi cle is stationary
and the ign ition is turned on or when the vehi­
cle is mov ing not faster than
3 mph (5 km/h).
The number of keys progr ammed to the vehi­
cle is also displayed. The disp lay
3 \3 indicates
that th ree keys have been programmed . This
allows yo u to make sure you have rece ived a ll
of the keys when you purchase a used vehicle.
F or exam ple, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should take those keys to your a uth orized
Aud i dea ler to have the miss ing key deactivat­
ed so it cannot be used. You sho uld also re­
port the m issi ng key to your insurance compa­
ny.
Calling up the driver informati on
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usua lly w ith a driver
message . T he driver message display disap­
pears after about 5 seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed agai n by briefly press ­
in g the
!CHECK I button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ICHECK I button briefly, yo u
can set thres ho ld 1 of the speed warning
while you are driving
o page 29 . By main­

Instrument cluster illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

A lig ht sensor in the instrument cl uster con­
tro ls t he illumination for the instrument clus­
te r, the center conso le and the displays . In a
bright env ironment, us ing the b uttons to
c hange the brightness has no effect .
{l) Tips
The illumination for the inst rument cluster
lights up w henever you switch on the igni­
tion with the vehicle headlights off. As the
day light fades, the inst rument cluste r illu­
mination l ikewise dims automa tica lly and
will go out comp let ely when the o utsi de
li g ht is very low. T his feature is meant t o
r emi nd you t o switch on t he he adlight s

vehicle is a potentially hazardous area.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau­

symbo l (pr iority 1 -Danger!) or with a yel­
low symbol (prior ity 2 -Warning) .
EPC Electronic power control
Applies to veh icles: w ith gasoline engine
This warning/indicator Light monitors the
electronic power control .
The Illa warning/ indicator light (Electron ic
Power Control) illuminates when you turn on
the ignit ion as a funct ion check .
(D Tips
If this warn ing/ indicator light illum inates
while you are driving, then there is a mal­
funct ion in the engine electronics . Have
the malfunct ion corrected as soon as pos­
sible by your author ized Audi dealer or
q ualified workshop.
W Glow plug system
Applies to veh icles: w ith diesel engine
The control Light illuminates when the glow
plug system is active .
If the II indicator light illuminates, the glow
plug system is act ive . You should start the en­
gine immediately after the ind icator light
swi tches
off. Th e indi cator light only i llum i­
nates fo r approximate ly 1 second if the en­
gine is warm or if the outside temperature is
above 46 QF (8 QC).
(D Tips
- I f the glow plug indica tor ligh t illum i­
nates while dr iving, there is an eng ine
contro l malfunction. The engine should
be checked immediate ly .
- I f the ind icator light does not illuminate
at a ll when switching the ign ition on,
there may be a malfunction in the glow
plug system. The engine sho uld be
checked.

;;./~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
This warning/indicator light monitors the
Electronic Stabilization Control.
If th€ JjJ indicator light blinks wh ile driving,
the ESC or ASR (Ant i-S lip Regulation) is active­
l y regulating.
If the
DJ indicator light turns on, the system
has sw itched the ESC off . In this case, you can
switch the ignition off and then on to switch
the ESC on again. The indicator light turns off
when the system is functioning fully.
If the
II indicator light turns on, ESC was re·
stricted using the
I B OFF ! button~ page 223 .
Stabilization con trol (E SC/A BS): Fault! See
o wn er's manu al
If th€ J.i) indicator light and the ABS indicator
light
ml (USA models) ; IIJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electronic differential lock is malfunction ing .
This also causes the ESC to malfunct ion . The
brakes st ill function with the ir normal power,
but ABS is not act ive.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied workshop immediately to have the mal·
function corrected.
A WARNING
If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada
mode ls) brake system ind icator light turns
on togethe r with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed . Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve and in·
crease the risk of sliding. Dr ive carefully to
the nearest authorized Aud i dea ler or oth­
er qua lified workshop and have the mal·
function corrected.

tli1 ! !r Safety systems
T he . (USA models)/ . (Canada mode ls)
i ndica tor light monito rs the safety systems
(e.g . ai rbags, pretensioners) and illuminates
for a few seconds each time you switch the ig­
nition on.
If the . (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a malfunction somewhere
in the system. If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign ition on, th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
A WARNING "'--
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler
i mmediately. Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acc i­
dent.
¢¢ Turn signal s
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Whenever you use the left B or the right Ill
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . When
you use the emergency flashe rs, both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink twice as fast as nor· mal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode.
The ind icator light does not flash if a turn sig·
nal is out on the tra iler or the towing veh icle .

¢1.~ Trailer turn signal assembly
Appl ies to vehicles: with towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn sig­
nal is operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light. blinks when the turn
signal is used, if a trailer has been properly
connected to the vehicle.
If one of the turn signal bulbs on the trai ler is
burned out or defective, the indicator light
will not blink when you use the turn signals.
{!) Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a trailer h itch that was installed
later according to factory specifications,
the trailer tu rn signal assembly is actuat­
ed.
o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IL) is part
of the On-Boa rd D iagnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbol
¢111ij li gh ts up when the igni tion is
turned on and will turn off after the engine has started and has sett led at a constant idle
speed. This ind icates that the MIL is working
properly .
The warning light i lluminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine e lectronic system .
Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have
the malfunction corrected.

Ci:> Adaptive Air Suspension
A ppl ies to vehicles: with Ada ptive Ai r Susp en sio n
This II warning/indicator light has the fol­
l owing f unctions:
- It illuminates for a few seco nds after the ig­
nition is t urned on as f unct ion check and
then goes out . -
If the warning/indicator light illuminates or
blinks contin uously, there is a system fault
in the Adaptive Air Suspension. A system
fau lt can result in lim ited ride comfort and
lo w ground clea rance . Drive safely to the
nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified
wo rkshop, and have the fault corrected.
- If the warning/indicator light flashes, you
should not dr ive the veh icle . The flashing
warning/indicator light points to an extreme H igh level. A very
pronounced lifting of the
veh icle (ext reme H igh leve l) can result, for
examp le, when a heavy load is removed
from the vehicle. As soon as the level has re ­
t u rned to norma l, the wa rning/indicator
light stops flashing, and you can drive away.
- If the warning/indicator lig ht flashes in con ­
junction with the. warning/indicator
light, you should not dr ive off immediately
in order to prevent damage to the under­
body. The two warn ing/ indicator lights
flashing together points to an extreme Low level. A ve ry
pronounced lowering of the ve­
hicle (extreme Low leve l) can result, for ex­
ample, from a heavy load. As soon as the
level has retu rned to normal, the warn ing/
ind icator lights stop flashing, and you can
drive away.

If the w arning/ indic ator l igh t flas hes in
conjunction with the. warning/ind icator
li ght, you shou ld not d rive the vehicle be ­
cause low-lying vehicle parts can bottom
out as you drive over uneven ground and be damaged as a result.
~ Adaptive Air Suspension

This. warn ing/indicator light has the fo l­
low ing functions:
- It illuminates for a few seconds after the ig­ nition is turned on as function check and
then goes out .
- It comes on for approximately 15 seconds
as a warning of
reduced ground clearance , if .,,.

the dynamic mode is activated and if the ig­
nition is switched on

-If the warning/indicator light flashes in con­
junction with the
Ill warning/indicator
li ght, you shou ld not drive the vehicle imme­
diately in order to prevent damage to the
underbody . The two warning/indicator
lights flash ing together po ints to an ex­
treme Low level. A very
pronounced lower­
ing
of the veh icle (ext reme Low level) can re­
sult, fo r example, from a heavy load. As
soon as the leve l has ret urned to norma l

the warning/indicato r lights stop flashing,
and yo u can drive away.

~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator lig ht ill uminates
when the ignition is sw itched on to remind
the driver and (on USA models only) any front passenger to put on the safety belt. Add ition­
ally, an acoustic warning (gong) w ill also
sound.

The II warning/indicator light illuminates
when the high beams are on or when you use
the head light flasher. For more informat ion

ill Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
The warning/indicator light appears in the
event of a significant loss of tire pressure or if there is a malfunction.
The ind icator light [IJ illuminates to check
the function w hen you switch on the ign ition.
If the
[IJ symbol remains on or blinks after
you sw itch on the ign it ion, there is a loss of
t ire p ressure or a system ma lfunction . If there
is a system ma lfunction, see your authorized
Audi dealer as soon as poss ible.

. CRUISE /''(") Cruise control
The IR;\l)~il (U SA mode ls) ,fl (Canada mod­
els) warning/indicator light i lluminates when
t h e cr uise control is activated .
ABS/(8) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The ttl1 (USA models) /KO)l (Canada mode ls)
warning/indicator ligh t will come on for a few
seconds when the ignition is switched on. The
light will go out after an a utomatic check se ­
quence is comp leted .
There is a malfunct ion in the ABS when:
- The warning/indica tor l igh t does no t illum i­
nate when you switch on the ignition.
- The warning/indicator light does no t go o ut
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illum inates
while driving.
The brak e syst em will still respond e ven
withou t the ass istanc e of th e ABS sy stem .
