To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must be switched off.
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coo lant level sensor
c:::> page 15. We still recommend you check the
coolant level from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cool­
ing system should be inspected immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer. It is not
enough merely to add coolant.
In a
sealed system, losses can occur on ly if
the boiling point of the coo lant is exceeded as
a result of overheating .
A WARNING
-- The cooling system is under pressure. Do
notopenthecapofthecoolantexpan­
sion tank when the engine is hot. You
ris k be ing sca lded.
- The coolant additive, and therefore the
coo lant itself, is haza rdous to hea lth .
Keep the coolant additive in the original

container out of the reach of children. It
is a poison hazard.
@ Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak seal­
ant to your vehicle's engine coolant. Add­
ing radiator repair fluid may adversely af­
fect the function and performance of your
cooling system and could result in damage
not covered by your New Vehicle Lim ited
Warranty.
Adding coolant
Before you check anything in the engine com­
partment,
always read and heed all WARN­
INGS q A in Working in the engine compart­
ment on pag e 173.

Replacement engine coolant must conform to
exact specifications
q page 181, Coolant .
We recommend using only coolant additive
G12++, G13 or in an emergency G12 +. Do
not
use a different additive. In an emergency use
plain water until you can get the correct addi­
tive and can restore the correct ratio. This
should be done as soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount of
coolant, then you should add cold antifreeze
and cold water only when the engine is cold.
Always use
new engine coolant when refilling .
Do not fill coolant above the "max" mark. Ex­
cess coolant will be forced out through the
pressure relief valve in the cap when the en­
gine becomes hot.
A WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of
scalding from hot coolant by following
these steps.

- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid and steam by covering
the cap with a large, thick rag.
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully
in a counter-clockwise direction while
applying light, downward pressure on
the top of the cap.
- To avoid being burned, do not spill an­
tifreeze or coolant on the exhaust sys­
tem or hot engine parts. Under certain
conditions, the ethylene glycol in en­
gine coolant can catch fire .
- Antifreeze is poisonous. Always store an ­
tifreeze in its original container and well
out of the reach of children.
- If you drain the coolant, it must be
caught and safely stored in a proper con­
tainer clearly marked "poison" .
Q) Note
- Coolant pollutes the environment and
could cause an engine fire . Ex cess cool­
ant will be forced out through the pres­
sure relief valve in the cap when the en­
gine becomes hot.
- If, in an emergency, only water can be
added, the correct ratio between water
and antifreeze
q page 181 must be re­
stored as soon as possible.
@ For the sake of the environment
Drained coolant should not be reused . Al­
ways dispose of used coolant while observ­
ing all environmental regulations.
Brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experi­
enced t echnician.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If
the water content in the brake fluid is too
high, corrosion in the brake system may result
afte r a period of time. The boiling point of the
brake fluid will also decrease considerably and
decrease braking performance. .,.. •

A WARNING
-Incorrect tire pressures and/or underin­
flation can lead to a serious or fatal acci­
dent .
- Incorrect tire pressures and/or underin­
flation cause increased tire wear and can
affect the handling of the vehicle.
- Incorrect tire pressures and/or underin­
flation can also lead to sudden tire fa il­
ure, including a blowout and sudden de­
flation, causing loss of vehicle control.
Checking tire pressure
The correct tire pressure for the tires original ­
ly installed on your vehicle is listed on the tire
pressure label located on driver's side 8-pil­ lar.
The recommended t ire pressures are on the
tire pressure labe l and in the tab le
¢ page 193, Cold tire inflation pressure . This
means that the pressure must be checked and
ad justed when the tire has not been driven for
more than a couple of m iles (kilometers) at
low speeds during the previous three hours.
Air in the tires expands when the tire heats up
as a result of internal fr iction as it flexes in
use. The tire pressure is higher when the tire
has warmed up than when it is "cold".
It is the inflation pressure in a "cold" tire that
counts. Therefore, you should never let air out
of a warm t ire to match "Cold tire inflation
pressure" recommendations
¢ page 193. The
tires would then be under inflated and could
fa il suddenly.
The tire pressure label on your Audi lists the recommended cold t ire inflat ion pressures for
the new, or iginal equipment tires that were
on you r vehicle at the t ime it was manufac­
tured. For the location of the label

Most tires lose a ir naturally over time. They
can also lose some a ir if you dr ive over a pot­
h ole o r hi t a curb while pa rking. It is usua lly
not possib le to see whether the radia l tires

used today are underinflated just by looking
at them .
T he refore, be su re to check t ire p ress ures at
least once a month and a lways befo re going
on a long trip . Make s ure to take the number
of peop le and the amount of luggage into ac­
count when adjusting tire pressure for a trip -
even one that yo u wou ld not consider to be
"long". See
¢ page 196, Tires and vehicle
load limits
for more important information .
A lways use an accurate tire pressure gauge
when checking and adjusting inflation pres­
sures. Check all of the tires. If the pressure in
any tire is too high when the tire is "cold", let
a ir out of the tire slowly with the edge of the
tire gauge and keep checking the pressure un­
ti l you reach the pressure that is co rrect fo r
the load (passenge rs and luggage) and kind of
driv ing you plan to do .
If the pressure in any tire is too low, note the
difference between the p ressure in the cold
t ir e and the pressure you need and add the air
that you need to reach the correct pressure for
the vehicle load (passengers and luggage) for
the tires on your vehicle as listed on the on
your vehicle and in this man ua l and the kind
of driving you plan to do .
Never e xceed the m ax imum infl ation pre s­
sure listed on the tire side wall f or an y re a­
s on .
Remember that the vehicle manufacturer, not
the tire manufact urer, determines the cor rect
tire p ress ure for the tires on your ve hicle .
I t i s important to check the t ire press ure when
the tires are co ld .
- Read the required tire pressure from the t ire
p ressure labe l located on drive r's side B-pil­
lar.
- Tu rn the va lve stem cap counter-clockw ise
to remove it from the t ire va lve.
- Place the a ir p ressure gauge on the va lve .
- The tire pressures should only be checked and ad justed when the tires are cold . The
slightly raised pressures of warm tires must
no t be reduced. .,. •

This also improves the vehicle's braking
performance and reduces stopping distances .
Summer tires provide less g rip on ice and
snow.
W inter t ires (snow t ires) must always be fitted
on all four wheels.
Compat ible tire pressure mon itoring sensors
must be installed on all four winter tires for
the tire pressure monitor ing system to func­
tion properly ~
page 201 .

W inter t ires lose the ir effectiveness when the
tread is worn down to a depth of 0 .157 inch
(4 mm).
Only drive with winter tires under winter con­
d itions. Summer tires handle better when
there is no snow or ice on the roads and the
temperature is above 45 °F (7 °C).
Please always remember that w inter t ires may
have a lower speed rating than the t ires origi­
na lly installed on your vehicle at the t ime it
was manufactured. Please see~

A WARNING
Winter tires have maximum s peed limits
th at may be lowe r than you r vehi cle's m ax­
im um speed. Always know the maxim um
speed befo re d riving off . Never d rive faster
than the speed permitted for your specific
w inte r tires. This will cause damage to the
tires leading to an accident and serious
personal in jury to you and yo ur passen­
gers.
A WARNING
Dr iv ing faster than the maximum speed
for which the w inter t ires on your vehicle
-
were designed can cause t ire fail ure in­
cluding a blowout and sudden deflation,
l oss of contro l, crashes and ser ious per­
sona l injuries. Have worn o r damaged tires
r eplaced immediately .
- W inter tires have maximum speed rating
that may be lower than yo ur vehicle 's
maximum speed.
- Never d rive faster than the speed for
which the w in ter or othe r tires installed
on yo ur vehicle a re rated .
A WARNING
-Always ad just your dr iv ing to the road and
traffic condit ions . Never let the good ac­
ce ler ation o f the w in ter t ires and a ll-wheel
d rive tempt yo u into t aking extra risks. Al­
ways remember:
- W hen braking, an all-wheel drive veh icle
handles in the same way as a front drive
vehicle .
- D rive c arefully and redu ce your spee d on
icy and slippery roads, even w inter t ires
cannot help under black ice conditions .
@ For the sake of the environment
Use summer tires when weather condi­
tions permi t. T hey are qu iete r, do no t wear
as quickly and reduce fuel consumpt ion .
Snow chains
Snow chains may be fitted only to the rear
whee ls, and on ly to certain tire sizes . Ask your
authori zed Aud i dea ler on which tire si zes
snow chains ca n be used .
The snow chains must have low -profi le links
and must not be th icker than 0.53 inch
(13 .5 mm), includ ing the lock.
Remove whee l center covers before putt ing
snow c hains on your vehicle

the wheel bolts. These are available from au­

After a tire repair, have the sealant bottle
rep laced at a dealership. This restores full
functionality to the Tire Mob ility System.
What should I be
aware of when
changing a tire?
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed the
right direction .
A unidirectiona l tire can be ident ified by ar­
row s on the sidewall,
which point in the direc­
tion of the rotation. You must follow the
specified direction of rotat ion. This is necessa­
ry in order for these t ires to develop the ir op·
timum characteristics regarding grip, road noise, wear, and hydroplani ng.
Anti-theft wheel bolts
A special adapter is needed to turn the anti· theft wheel bolts.

before the wheel can be removed.

tighten the remaining whee l bolt slig htly
like the rest.
.. Turn the jack handle counter-clockw ise to
lower the vehicle until the jack is fully re­
leased .
The wheel bolts must be clean and turn easily.
Check the contact surfaces of wheel and hub. Remove contaminants on these surfaces be­
fore installing the wheel.
The hexagonal socket in the screwdriver han ­
dle makes it easier to handle the wheel bolts.
The reversible blade should be removed.
When mounting
unidirectional tires, observe

dle of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten
the wheel bo lts.
Tightening wheel bolts
.. Fit the wheel bolt wrench over the wheel
bolt and push it down as far as it will go
ll.
.. Close your grip around the end of the
w rench handle for maximum torque and
turn each wheel bolt
clockwise until it sits
tight .
Have the
tightening torque of the wheel bolts
checked as soon as possible with a to rque
wrench. It should be 120 Nm .
Check the
tire pressure as soon as possible.
Return the veh icle tool k it to its proper place.
A WARNING ..,___
Loosening the wheel bolts is prohibited;
danger of an acc ident!
(D Tips
- Never try and use the hexagonal socket
in the handle of the screwdriver to loos­
en or t ighten the wheel bo lts.
- If you have determined that wheel bolts are corroded and difficult to turn, the
bolts must be replaced before check ing
the torque .
- Until the t ightening torque is checked,
dr ive at reduced speeds as a precaution.
Notes on wheel change
-
Please read the information o page 199, New
tires and replacing tires and wheels,
if you are
go ing to use a spa re tire wh ich is different
from the tires on your vehicle.
After you change a tire:

Starting the engine
.,. Start the eng ine of the vehicle providing as­
s istance and allow it to run at id le.
.,. Now start the engine of the vehicle with the
discharged battery .
.,. If the engine does not start: Stop trying af­
ter 10 seconds and then try again after
about 30 seconds .
.,. Disconnect the cable while the engine is
running in exactly
reverse order to that de­
scribed.
The battery is vented to the outside to prevent
gases from entering the vehicle interior. Make
sure that the jumper clamps are well connect­
ed with their
metal ports in full contact with
the battery termina ls.
A WARNING
To avoid serious personal i njury and dam­
age to the vehicle, heed all warnings and
instructions of the jumper cable manufac­
turer.
If in doubt, ca ll for road service .
- Jumper cables must be long enough so
that the vehicles do not touch.
- When connecting jumper cables, make
sure that they cannot get caught in any
moving parts in the engine compart­
ment.
- Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all
WARNINGS
c:> page 172, Working in the
engine comportment.
Improper hook-up of jumper cables can ru­
in the generator.
- Always connect POSITIVE( +) to POSI­
TIVE(+), and NEGATIVE(-) to NEGATIVE
( - ) ground post of the battery manager
control unit.
- Check that all screw plugs on the battery
ce lls are screwed in firmly. If not, tighten
plugs prior to connecting clamp on nega­
tive battery terminal.

- Please note that the procedure for con ­
necting a jumper cable as described
above applies specifically to the case of
your vehicle being jump started. When
you are giving a jump start to another ve­
hicle, do
not connect the negative(-) ca­
ble to the negative(-) terminal on the
discharged battery@. Instead, securely
connect the negative(-) cable to eithe r a
solid metal component that is firmly
bolted to the engine block or to the en­
gine block itself. If the battery that is be­
ing charged does not vent to the outside,
escaping battery gas could ignite and ex­
plode!
Emergency towing
with commercial tow
truck
' General hints
Your Audi requires special handling for tow­
ing.
The following information is to be used by commercial tow truck operators who know
how to operate their equipment safely.
- Never tow your Audi, towing will cause dam­
age to the engine and transmission.
- Never wrap the safety chains or winch cables around the brake lines.
- To prevent unnecessary damage, your Audi
must be transported w ith a car carrier (flat
bed truck) .
- To load the vehicle on to the flat bed, use
the towing loop found in the vehicle tools
and attach to the front anchorage

A WARNING
A vehicle being towed is not safe for pas­
sengers . Never allow anyone to ride in a
vehicle be ing towed, for any reason.
