The instrument illumination for the needles
and dials turns on when the ignition is turned
on and the lights are turned off. The illumina ­
tion for the dial s reduces automatically and
eventually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the headlights on at the appropriate
time.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coo lant gauge (D ¢ page 10, fig. 3
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points:

Engine cold

If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­
perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, heavy en­
gine loads and heavy throttle applications .
Normal temperature
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the L EDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on under normal driving conditions . The
LEDs higher up may turn on when the engine is
under heavy load or the exterior temperature is
high . This is no need to worry as long as the.
warning light in the instrument cluster does not
ill uminate.
If the LE Ds in the upper area of the
display and the indicator light. in the instru­
ment cluster display turn on, the coolant temper­
ature is too high

-Always observe the warning in¢ page 203,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant

- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety haz­
ard. Stop the car and get professional assis­
tance .
- If the

els) brake system indicato r light turns on to­
gethe r with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regu lating function may
have fa iled . Functions that stabilize the ve ­
hicle are no longer available . Th is could
cause the vehicle to swerve and increase the ris k of sliding . Stop the car and get profes­
sional ass is tance.
- If the brake warning/indicator ligh t does
not go out afte r a few seconds and the par k­
ing brake i5 relea5ed, or light5 up wh ile you
are driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If yo u be lieve that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or qualif ied repa ir facility and have the
brake system inspected.
- Always keep in m ind that after several brake
applications, you w ill need greater pressure
on the b rake pedal to stop your veh icle . Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopp ing power in cr itical s itua­
tions. You must a llow for increased brak ing
distances. The extra dist ance used up by
fading bra kes co uld lead to an accident.
PARK/ C®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the elec ­
tromechanical parking brake .

Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manually, press the
brake pedal and press the button~ at the same
time . The parking brake o nly releases automati­
cally if the driver's safety be lt is faste ned .

If the Ill indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage app ears, th ere is a parking brak e malfunc ­
tion . D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or
qua lified workshop immediately to have the mal­
function corrected .

A WARNING
- Never open the hood if you can see or hear

This warning/indi cator Light detects a malfunc­
tion in the generator or in the vehicle's ele ctrical
system.

• Alternator fault: Battery is not being charg­
ed
If the indicato r light turns on and the message
appea rs, there is a ma lf un ction in the generator
o r vehicle e lectr ica l system .
Drive to your author iz ed A udi dealer or qualified
workshop immediate ly . Beca use the vehicle bat­
te ry is d ischa rging, tur n off all u nnecessary elec ­
trical eq uipment such as the rad io . Seek profes­
s io nal assistance if the battery charge level i s too
l o w .

driving
If the indicato r light turns on and the message

Selective unlocking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys­
tem will lock the doors and the rear lid . When
unlocking, you can set in the MMI whether only
the driver's door or the entire vehicle should be unlocked
¢ page 33.
Automatic locking
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehi­
cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than 9 mph (15 km/h) .
The car is unlocked again, when the opening
function in the power locking system switch or at
one of the door levers is actuated. The Auto Lock
function can be turned on and off in the MMI
¢page 33.
Anti-theft alarm warning system
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoustic and visual
warning signals are triggered .
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto­ matically when you lock the vehicle. It is deacti­
vated when unlocking using the remote key, with
the mechanical key, and when you switch the ig­ nition on .
The alarm also turns off when the alarm cycle has
expired .
Turn signals When you unlock the vehicle, the turn signals
flash twice. When you lock the vehicle the turn
signals flash once. If they do not flash, one of the
doors, the rear lid or the hood is not locked.
Unintentionally locking yourself out
In the following cases there safeguards to pre­
vent you locking your remote master key in the
vehicle:

- The vehicle does not lock with the central lock­
ing switch ~
page 35 if the driver's door is
open.
- On vehicles with convenience key*, if the most
recently used master key is in the luggage com­
partment, the rear lid is automatically unlocked
again after it is closed.
Do not lock your vehicle with the
remote master
key or convenience key*
until all doors and the
rear lid are closed . In this way you avoid locking
yourself out accidentally.
Power side door closer*
The vehicle doors are equipped with a power side door closer. When closing a door, you only have
to let it fall lightly into the latch. The door will
then automatically close by itself¢,&. .
A WARNING
-
-When you lock your vehicle from outside,
nobody - especially children - should remain
inside the vehicle . Remember, when you
lock the vehicle from the outside the win­
dows cannot be opened from the inside.
- When you leave the vehicle, always take the
ignition key with you. This will prevent pas­
sengers (children, for example) from acci­
dentally being locked in the vehicle should
they accidentally press the power locking
switch in the doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle un­
supervised. In an emergency it would be im­
possible to open the doors from the outside
without the key.
- Applies to vehicles with power side door
closer*:
- When closing a door, make sure nothing
can interfere with the door. This could
cause serious personal injury .
- You can stop the door from closing at any
time by pulling on the inside or outside
door handle.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy­
ment all locked doors will be automatically

unlocked to give access to the vehicle
occupants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should ma l­
function, you can lock the driver's door us­ ing the mechanical key¢
page 36.
- If the power locking system should fail, you
can still open the fuel tank flap in an emer­
gency ¢
page 201.
- You are well advised not to keep valuables
inside an unattended vehicle, visible or not.
Even a properly locked vehicle cannot pro­
vide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driver's
door panel comes on for about 30 seconds
after the vehicle is locked, there is a mal­
function in the power locking or the anti­
theft warning system. Have the malfunction
corrected by an authorized Audi dealership
or qualified repair facility.
Setting central locking
In the Infotainment system, you can set which
doors the central locking system will unlock .
.. Select: the ICARI function button > (Car)* Sys­
tems control button > Vehicle settings > Cen­
tral locking*.
Door unlocking -
You can decide if All doors or
only the
Driver should unlock . The luggage com­
partment lid also unlocks when
All is selected . If
you select
Driver in a vehicle with a convenience
key*, only the door whose handle you pull will un­
lock.
If you select Driver, all the doors and luggage
compartment lid will unlock if you press the~
button on the remote control master key twice.
Disable tailgate handle -If you select On, the
luggage compartment lid handle is locked . In
this case the luggage compartment lid can be opened with the
! ""'I button on the master key or
with the
l=I button* in the driver's door. In
vehicles with a convenience key*, you can still
open the luggage compartment lid using the
handle if an authorized master key is near the
proximity sensor* .
Opening and closing
Fold mirrors when locking* -If you select On,
the exterior rearview mirrors fold in automatical­
ly when you press the~ button on the remote
control master key or touch the sensor* in the
handle.
Lock when driving -If you select On, the vehicle
locks automatically when driving. All of the doors
and the luggage compartment lid lock.
Tone when locking -if you select On, a tone will
sound when you lock the vehicle.

If the vehicle is unlocked and no door, the rear lid
or the hood is opened within 60 seconds, the ve­
hicle locks itself again automatically. This feature
prevents the vehicle from being accidentally left
unlocked over a long period of time. ..,.

Removing the wiper blade
~ Fold the windshield wiper arm away from the
windshield.
~ Press the locking knob(!)¢ fig. 49 on the wiper
blade . Hold the wiper blade firmly.
~ Remove the wiper blade in the direction of the
arrow .
Installing the wiper blade
~ Insert the new wiper blade into the mount on
the wiper arm@ until you hear it latch into
place.
~ Place the wiper arm back on the windshield.
~ Turn the serv ice position off .
A WARNING
-
For safety reasons, the windsh ield wiper
blades should be replaced once or twice each
year.
0 Note
- Only fold the windshield wipers away when
i t is in the serv ice position . Otherwise, you
r isk damaging the paint on the hood or the
windsh ield wipe r motor.
- You should not move your vehicle o r operate
the windshie ld wiper lever when the wiper
arms are folded away from the windshield.
The windshield wipers would move back in­
to their original position and could damage
the hood and windshield.
(D Tips
- You can also use the service position, for ex­
ample, if you want to protect the windshield
from icing by using a cover.
- You cannot activate the service position
when the hood is open.

Automatic transmission
-Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptron ic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicator lamp
[i'J illuminates
and a driver message appears
¢ page 105
when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these­
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 203. Otherwise, any increase in en ­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied .
@ Note
-When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac­
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se­
lected . This can cause the transmission to
overheat and can damage it . Activate the
parking brake or press the brake pedal to
prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the engine
is stopped and the selector lever is in N will
damage the transmission because it is not
lubricated under those circumstances.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.

· Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission automatically selects a gear
that is suitable for the incline. Hill descent con­
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
time of braking, within physical and technical
limitations. If may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes.
Hill descent control switches off once the decline
levels out or you press the accelerator pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
Q page 77, hill descent control is also activated
when the speed is set.
A WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions. Always be ready to apply the brakes.

Audi pre sense Preventative passenger
protection
Applies to: ve hicles with Audi pre sense
Pre sense can initiate steps to protect vehicle oc­
cupants in certain dangerous situations. The
functions described are available depending on
veh icle equ ipment:
Pre sense basic*
The following functions can be triggered in cer­
tain driving situations:
- Tightening of the safety belts (for examp le,
during emergency braking): the front safety
belts have reversib le belt pretensioners. If a
collision does not occur, the safety belts loosen
slightly and are ready to trigger aga in.
- Closing the w indows and the sunroof* (for ex­
ample, when over- or understeering) : the win­
dows and the sunroof* close until there is only
a small gap open .
Audi pre sense basic functions can be triggered at
speeds above 20 mph (30 km/h). Drive select: the deployment time is adapted in
Dynamic mode .
Pre sense front (vehicles with adaptive cruise
control*)
Pre sense front contains the functions of pre
sense basic . In addition, the likelihood of a rear ­
end collision with the vehicle ahead is also calcu­
lated, within the limi ts of the system. If the risk
of a collision is detected, the following functions
can trigger:
- Braking guard

- Tensioning of the safety belts
- Closing the windows and the sunroof*
Pre sense rear (vehicles with side assist*)
Pre sense rear contains the functions of pre sense
bas ic. In addit ion, the lik el ihood of a rear-end
coll is ion from the vehicle behind is also calculat­
ed, within the limits of the system. If the risk of a
collision is detected, the following functions can
trigger:
Audi pre sense
-Tensioning of the safety belts
- Closing the windows and the sunroof*
Pre sense plus*
Pre sense plus contains the functions of pre
sense front and pre sense rear .
Error message
Aud i pre sense: Unavailable
Preventative passenger protection is not availa­
ble. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.
A WARNING

Pre sense cannot overcome natural phys ica l
laws . It is a system designed to assist and it
cannot prevent a collision . Do not let the in­
creased safety provided tempt you into taking
risks. This could increase your risk of a colli­
sion.
- The system can dep loy incorrectly .
- Please note that the sensors do not always
detect all objects . This increases the risk of
a collision.
- Pre sense does not react to people or ani­
mals or objects that are crossing the vehi­
cle's path or are difficu lt to detect
.:>page 79.
-Reflective objects such as guard ra ils or the
entrance to a tunnel, heavy rain and ice can
affect the function of the radar sensors and
the system's ability to detect a collision risk.
(D Note
The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
un derbody. Pre sense can be impaired by this.
Have an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility check their function .

The engine hood is released from inside the vehi­
cle .

Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
Whenever you must perf orm any work in the
engine compartment , for example checking and
filling different fluids , the re is a risk of injur y,
burn s and accidents. To prevent personal injury
always observe the following WARNINGS. The
eng ine compartment of any veh icle is a hazard ­
ous area

th ing under the hoo d:
-T urn off the engine .
- Sw itch off the ignit ion.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever to P (Pa rk).
- Always let the en gine cool down. Ho t com-
ponents wi ll burn skin on con tact .

-To reduce the ris k of b eing bur ned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wa it until no steam or coolant can
be
seen or hea rd before carefully opening the
hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment .
- Never sp ill fluids on hot engine compo ­
nents. They can cause a f ire.
- Never touch the radiator fan . The auxiliary
electric fan is temperature contro lled and
can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coo lant reservoir cap when
the engine is st ill warm. The coolant system
is pressuri zed and hot coolant could sp ray
out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by plac ing a
thick rag over the cap when yo u open the
coolant reservoir .

Checking and Filling
-Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames . Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available .
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started,
never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever to P (Park) .
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V -belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting
hot parts. Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
cal hazards

A WARNING
California Proposition 65 Warning:
- Engine exhaust, some of its constituents,
and certain vehicle components contain or
emit chemicals known to the State of Cali­
fornia to cause cancer and birth defects and
reproductive harm. In addition, certain flu­
ids contained in vehicles and certain prod­
ucts of component wear contain or emit

to cause cancer and birth defects or other
reproductive harm .
- Battery posts, terminals and related acces­
sories contain lead and lead compounds,
chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and reproductive harms .
Wash hands after handling.

When adding fluids, always make sure that
they are poured into the proper container or
filler opening, otherwise serious damage to
vehicle systems will occur.
@ For the sake of the environment
To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly . If you
see spots from oil or other vehicle fluids, have
your vehicle inspected by an authorized Audi
dealer.
Closing the engine hood

struts is reduced.

drop down and latch in place. Do
not try to push it shut;
it may fail to engage

A WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving .
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en ­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driving that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close it .
