Malfunction in the electronic differential lock (EDL)
The ED L works toge ther w ith the ABS. The ABS warn ing lig ht w ill
come on if there is a mal func tion in the EDL system=>

& WARNING
• If the .. (USA models )/ ...,. (Canada models ) wa rning light
does not go out , or if it comes on while driving, the ABS system is
not working properly. The vehicle can then be stopped only with
the standard brakes (without ABS ). You will not have the p rotec­
tion ABS provide s. Contact you r Audi dealer as soon as pos sible .
• USA models: If the BRAKE warning light , the ., warning light
and the warning light come on together , the rear wheel s
could lock up first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up can
c ause loss of vehicle control and an accident. Have you r vehicle
repaired immediate ly by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified
workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applica ­
tions .
• Canada models: If the brake warning light «D>, the wa rning
light and the ABS warning light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up
can cause los s of vehicle control and an accident . Have your vehicle

Electromechanical parking brake

The warning/indicator light monit ors the electromechan­
ical parking broke .
With the pa rking bra ke app lied and the ignition t urned on, the
wa rning/ind icator light illuminates. Afte r the ign it ion has been
t u rne d off, the wa rning/indicator light continues to illuminate for about 30 seconds.
If the park
ing brake is applied w ith the ign ition
tur ned off, the w arning/ind ic a tor ligh t illumi nates fo r abo ut 3 0
seconds.
Th e warning/ind icator light will go out when the parking brake is
re lease d.
If the war ning/ indicator lig ht flashes cont inuous ly
after applying the
p ar king bra ke, bra king fo rce is no t sufficien t to prevent the vehicle
from rolling unintentionally . T his can happe n if the brakes become
too hot. P lease note the fo llowi ng:
• If the slope of the ground is too s teep to par k the ve hicl e, th e addi­
tional drive message appea rs
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep .
• In the event of a pa rking brake mal func tion, the yellow • symbol
appea rs in the instrument cluste r display and the driver message
Parking brake malfunction! is d isplayed. Have t he ma lf u n ct io n
re paire d as soon as possib le by a q ualified Audi dealership .•
Brake system BRAKE (USA
models)

The warning/indicator ligh t flashes if brak e fluid l eve l is
low, if there is an A BS system malfunction or a parking
brake malfunction.
Th e light illum ina tes when the igni tion is t urned o n. It goes out after
the engine has been started . This indicates that t he brake warn ing
light is fu nctioni ng p roperly.
If the brake warning light does not light up when the engine is
cranking , there may be a malfunction in the electrical system. In
this case, contact your Audi dealer.
If the brake system wa rning/indicator light flashes, there is a brake
system malfunc tion . By press ing the

up a driver message which explains the malfunction in mo re detail
=>
page 28. ~

If the ABS, ESP and brake force distribution fail, the ABS indicator
li ght (U SA mode ls)/ ( Can ad a models) and the ESP indica to r
light come on alo ng w it h the brake system malfu nction light
BRAKE (U SA models) /(Ci) (Ca nada models) . The message Brake fault!
Drive carefully to nearest workshop appears in the inst rument
cl uster disp lay and three consecut ive warning tones sound =>& .
(USA models): If the w arning lig ht
BRAKE and the wa rn in g light illu­
minate together, immediately contact your author ized Audi dealer or
qu alifie d wo rkshop to h ave all bra ke p ads in spec ted =>
page 32.
When the light comes on, an a udible war ning s ignal is also given .

• If the brake warning /indicator light doe s not go out after
a few
second s and the parking brake released, or l ights up while you are
driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir i s too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed immediately at low speed
to the neare st authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
and have the brake system inspected.
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications, you
will need greater p ressu re on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle .
Do not rely on strained brakes to re spond with maximum stopping

power in critical situations . You must allow fo r increased braking
distan ce s. The extra distance used up by fading brakes could lead
to an accident. •

- If the warning/indicator light flashes when the vehicle is
stationary or after the ignition is turned on , check to see if
the parking brake can be released . Drive to an authorized
repair facility as soon as possible and have the malfunc­
tion corrected. If the parking brake cannot be released,
contact your nearest authorized repair facility.
- If the warning/indicator light flashes while you are driving, it is possible that the traction control or the emer­
gency brake has malfunctioned. It is possible that the parking brake cannot be applied . It is also possible that
the parking brake cannot be released after it has been
applied. Drive to an authorized Audi dealer to have the malfunction corrected.

cause loss of vehicle control and an accident. Have your vehicle

Engine cooling system malfunction -1-
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must be
repaired as soon as possible.

An additional bulb in the headlight prov ides a corner ing light @ in

When you activate the turn signal lever, the Adaptive Light for the
same s ide is sw itched on. Please note that the t urn signal lever must
engage.
Adaptive Light is not switched on if you on ly move the turn signal
lever to the point of resistance to s ignal a lane change~
page 64,
"Turn signal ¢i c:> and high beam ~o lever".
When d riving arou nd bends, Adaptive Light is con tro lled according to
steering wheel angle.
• It is switched on in tight corners.
• It is not switched on in long, open bends .
Adaptive Light (in curves )
When driving through curves, the low beams © are automatica lly
cont rolled depending on driving speed and the steer ing w heel angle.

• T he system works up to a speed of abo ut 4 3 mph (70 km/h). If the
speed is higher, it is not activated .
• Adaptive Light ( in curves) func tions at a speed of abo ut 6 mph
(10 km/h) and is deactivated at speeds below abo ut 4 mph
(6 km/h). •
Emergency flasher ~
The emergency flasher makes other motorists aware that
you or your vehicle ore in on emergency situation.

When the emergency flasher is on, all four turn signals blink at the

and hold.
- Release the lever . The washer stops and the wipers keep
going for about four seconds.
Turning off the wipers
- Move the lever back to positio n@ .
The windshield wipe rs and washer only work when the ignition is
turned on.
T he rain sensor is only activated with the wiper leve r set to position
@ . When i t starts to rain, the rain sensor will automatically activate
the intermittent wiping mode .
T o red uce the sensit iv ity of the senso r, move sw itch @down. To
increase the sensitivity, move the switch up . The higher you adjust the

sensitivity, the faster the sensor will react when it senses mo isture on
t he windsh ie ld. T he rain senso r wiper inte rvals depend on the sensi­
tiv ity setting as well as vehicle speed . During brief stops, w iper
motion will adj ust in relation to the amount of rain on the winds hield.
Dur ing b rief stops, e .g . at a red light , w iper motion will automatically
be reduced to the next lower speed. Wipers already turn ing at low
speed. c hange to intermittent w iping.
When the ign ition is turned on, the washer jets are heated.
With the low beam headlights switched on, pull the wiper lever
towards you o nly
briefly to clean the w indshield . Holding the wiper
lever would also engage the headlight washer system each time you
clean the w indshield and would d rain the washer fluid rese rvoir
prematurely .
& WARNING

• The win dshield mu st not be treated with wat er- re pellent
m aterial s. They c an in crease gla re under po or visibilit y condit ions
s u ch as wetn ess, darkne ss, or when the sun i s low on the horizon .
In addition , they can cause the wi ndshield wipers to chatter.

• Always check that the wiper blades a re not frozen to the glass

General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adjusted.
Th ere a re va rious ways of ad justing t he fro nt seats to provide safe and
comfor ta ble suppo rt for th e dr iver and the front passenger . Ad just
your sea t properly so that :
• you can eas ily and quickly reach all the switches and controls in t he
in st rumen t pa nel
• your body is prope rly s upported th us reducing phys ica l stress and
f a tigue
• the safety be lts and airbag system can offe r maxim um protection
:::;, pag e 206.
In the following sect ions, you will see exactly how you can best ad just
your sea ts .
Th ere a re sp ecial regulations and instr uct io ns for installing a ch ild
sea t on the front passenge r's sea t. Always follow t he informat ion
r e gar ding ch ild safety provided in ::;,
pag e 231, "C hi ld Safety ".
L1}. WARNING
Incor rect seat ing position of the driver and all othe r passengers
can result in serious personal injury .
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in
motion -never put your feet on top of the instrument panel , out
of the window or on top of the seat cushion . This applies especially
to the passengers. If your seating position is incorrect, you
increase the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an acci-

dent. If the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect,
this could result in personal injury or even death.
• It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep
a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and /or instrument panel. If you 're sitting any
closer than this , the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition, the front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to
your body height so that they can give you maximum protection.
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the dr iver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle i s moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly , causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury. If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving , you are out of position.•
Driver's seat
Th e correct seat p osition is important for safe and
re lax ed driving.
W e recomme nd that you a djust t he dr ive r's sea t in t he
follow ing ma nne r:
- Adjust t he seat i n fore and aft d irect ion so t hat you can
easily p ush t he peda ls to the floor whi le keep ing your
k n ees sli ghtly bent =>

- Adjust t he seatback so t hat wh en you s it with you r bac k

The seat cushions and seat backs of the two outer rear
seats can be heated electrically.

- Rotate the thumb wheel@ to turn on and adjust the
heating for the left rear seat.
- Rotate the thumb wheel ® to turn on and adjust the
heating for the right rear seat.
With the thumb wheel in the O position, heating for the seats is
turned off . The range of adjustment is from 1 to 6 .
The rear seat heating operates only when the seats are occupied. If
there is no one sitt ing in the rear, you should switch off the seat
heating.

To avoid damage to the heating elements in the seats, do not kneel
on the seats o r place heavy loads on a small area of the seat. •

Steering wheel heating @
The steering wheel can be heated electrically .

When the steering wheel heat ing is switched on, the steer ing wheel
is heated to about
82°F (28°() and held there .
T he last setting se lected for the steer ing wheel heating (on or off) is
automatically saved when the vehicle is shut off and is assigned to the
remote key.•

Air distribution determines the air flow to the individual
vents.

- Turn the vertical thumbwheel beside the ou tlet to
increase , reduce or shut down t he airflow from that
outlet .
- To adjust the direction of the airflow from the outlet,
move the tab in the center of the outlet in the des ired
direction. The direction of the air de livered from t he vents
ca n be adjusted horizontally and vertically.
The air outlets are actuated e ither automatically or manually
depending on t he operat ing mode selected . Heated or unheated
fresh air, or cooled air flows from the vents .

- To adjust the direction of the a irf low f rom the o utlet ,
move t he tab in t he center o f the out let in the des ired
direction. The d irection of the air delivered from the vents
can be adjusted horizontally and vertica lly.
Th e air outlets are actuated either automatically or manually
depend ing on the ope rat ing mode se lected . Heated or unheated
fresh a ir, or cooled air flows from the vents .
Th e ai r outle ts to heat the rea r footwell are loca ted under the fro nt
seats.
