Interior lights
Interior lights
The interior lights include the reading lights for the driver
and the front passenger.
Activating door contact circuit

- Press the button @. The LED in the button illuminates.
Deactivating door contact circuit
- Press the button @. The LED in the button goes out.
Front reading lights ~
- Press one of the switches @ to turn the right or left
reading light on or off.
With the door contact circuit, the interior lights turn on as soon as
you unlock the vehicle or open the doors . The interior lights are also
turned on when the ignition key is removed. The lights turn off
about 30 seconds after the doors are closed. When the vehicle is
locked or when the ignition is turned on, the interior lights are
turned off .
Contro ls and eq uip­
ment
Clear vision
When a door is open, the interior lights are turned off after about 10
minutes to prevent battery draining.
The brightness of the lights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are switched on and off. •
Luggage compa rtm ent light
The light is located on the right side of the luggage compartment.
These lights come on automatically when the rear lid is opened. The
lights turn off automatically if the lid is left open for more then 10
minutes. •
Vision
Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

The driver's and passenger's sun visors can be pulled from the
brackets above the center of the windshield and swung toward the
doors

The vanity mirrors in the sun visors are equipped with lids. When the
lid is opened @, the mirror light in the headliner turns on automat-

ically . It turns off when the lid is closed and the visor is folded up
again .
Between the visors for the driver and the passenger there is a
folding visor which can be used to cover the space above the rear
view mirror .•
Wiper and washer system
Windshield wiper -$
The windshield wiper lever controls bo th the windshield
wipers and the washer system.

Automatic wiper /washer
- Pull the lever to position © (toward the steering wheel)
and hold.
- Release t he lever . The was her stops and the wipers keep
going for about four seconds.
Turning off the wipers

The windshield wipers and washer only work when the ign ition is
turned on. If you switch off the ignition with the windshield wiper
l ever still in the interval wipe p osition and the n come back a while
later and drive off , the rain sensor will reactivate itse lf after the
vehic le speed has exceeded 4 mph (6 km/h) .
The rai n se nsor* is only activa ted wit h the wiper lever set to posi­
tion
G) . When it starts to rain , the rain sensor wil l automatically acti ­
vate the in termittent wipi ng mode .
To reduce the sens itiv ity of the sensor, move switch© down . To
increa se the sensitivity, move the switch up . The h igher you adjust
the sensitivity, the faster the sensor will react when it senses mois ­
ture on the w indshie ld. The pauses between wiper turns depend not
only on the sens itivity setting, but on the vehicle speed as well.
During brief stops, e .g . at a red light, wiper motion will automati ­
cally be reduced to the next lower speed. Wipers a lready turning at
low speed . change to intermittent wiping .
When the ignition is turned on, the washe r jets are heated. ...

& WARNING
• Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving! Only when they are in
good condition are they able to clear the windows properly to
provide uncompromising visibility. Worn or damaged wiper blades
are a safety hazard~
page 63, "Replacing front wiper blades"!
• The light/rain sensor* is only designed to assist and support
the driver. It remains entirely the driver's responsibility to monitor outside weather conditions and to manually activate the wipers as
soon as rain or drizzle reduces visibility through the windshield.
• The windshield must not be treated with water-repellent mate­
rials. They can increase glare under poor visibility conditions such
as wetness, darkness, or when the sun is low on the horizon. In
addition, they can cause the windshield wipers to chatter.
0 Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
• Always check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the glass
before you turn the wipers on. Loosen a wiper blade which is frozen
in place before operating the wipers to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
• Do not use the wipers to clear a frosted window . Using the
wipers as a convenient ice scraper will destroy the wiper blades.
• Before you take your vehicle to an automatic car wash, make sure
you have the windshield wiper system switched off (lever in position
0), otherwise the windshield wiper system could get damaged in the
car wash if it should suddenly come on.
[ i] Tips
• The rain sensor is part of the interval wiping system. Turning off
the ignition will also deactivate the rain sensor . To reactivate the
sensor, switch off the interval wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
Controls and equip ­
ment
Clear vision
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades cause smearing, which
can affect the operation of the light/rain sensor*. Check the condi­
tion of your windshield wiper blades regularly.
• Applies to vehicles with light/rain sensor: When the wipers are
switched on manually and in rain conditions, the automatic head­
lights* turn on~

control" or off during the day when the wipers are no longer oper­
ating. The automatic headlights * function is available in this case
only when the light switch is in the "AUTO" position~
page 52,

• Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in the engine compartment
is topped off before going on a long trip. Look up~
page 233 for
checking and filling the washer container .
• The wipers only operate with the hood completely closed. •

Headlight washer system
The headlight washer system cleans the headlights.
Operate the windshield wiper/washer system=> page 60,
fig. 50 ® with the headlights turned on by holding the
lever for longer than one second.
The washer jets extend forward out of the front bumper driven by
water pressure to spray the front headlights with water .
You should inspect the headlights regularly (for example when refu ­
eling) and clean off any solid dirt or insects from the lenses.
To ensure the system works properly in winter, keep the washer jets
free of snow and remove any ice using a de -icing spray. •

Service position The wiper blades can be changed more easily in the
service position .

It is only possible to change wiper blades if you move the
w iper arms to the service position. On vehicles with the
Driver Information System , the wiper blades can only be
moved to the service or parked position via t he menu
display =>
page 27. In order to use the windshield wipers,
the hood must be completely closed.
Moving wiper blades to the service position
-When there is a risk of frost, make sure that the wiper
blades are not frozen to the windshield .
- Switch the ignition on .
- Switch the ignition off again and move the wiper lever
~ fig. 51 from position Oto 1 within 10 seconds . The
wiper arms now move into the field of view in the wind ­
shie ld.
Moving wiper blades to park position
-Make certain that the wiper arms are lying against the
windshield .
- Switch the ignition on and move the wiper lever~ fig . 51
from position Oto
1. The w iper arms w ill move back to the
park position.
I t is much easier to chang e wiper blad es if you mov e th e wiper arms
to the service position. You wil l also avoid paint damage to the hood
when working on the wip ers when they are in the service position .
0 Note
Never drive your vehicle when the windshield wiper arms are in the
service position and pulled away from the windshield . When you
drive faster than 4 mph (6 km/h) , the wiper arms automatica lly
return back to the park position and could cause paint damage to
the engine hood!
[ i ] Tips
• You can also turn on the service position, for example, if you
want to protect the windshield from icing by using a cover.
• The service position moves to
off automatically when you
operate the windshield wiper lever, or speed exceeds
4 mph
(6 km/hl. •

Activating /re ac tiv ating auto dimming

Aut om ati c dimmin g fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active .
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati ­
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when :
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
Sensors for automati c headligh ts *
With the help of the sensors in the mirror, when the light switch is
in the
AUTO posi tion, the low beams are switched on and off auto ­
matically depending on the ambient light conditions=>
page 52.
& WARNING
The glass of the inside rearview mirror is l ayered and contain s an
e lectrolyt e to a chieve its pr opert ie s . Be aware of liquid electr olyte
le aki ng fr om a broken mirror glass . This l iquid can cause irritation
to skin , eyes , and r espiratory sy stem .
• If you get ele ctrolyt e in your e yes or on your sk in , immediately
rin se with p lenty of water . If irritation per sists, s eek medical atten ­
tio n.

Liquid electrolyte leaked from a broken mirror glass wi ll damage any
p lastic surfaces it comes in contact with. Clean up spilled electrolyte
immediately wi th clear wa ter and a sponge .

• If you switch off the automatic di mming function on the in side
mirr or, automatic dimming of the outside mirrors w ill like wise be

• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from
reaching t he inside mirror.
• Do no t attach any stickers to the windshield in front of the two
light sensors, as this would interfere with both the automatic oper­
ation of the headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside
mirror(sl. •
Outside mirrors
The outside mirrors are electrically adjusted.

Reme mber that ve hicles or other ob jec ts w ill appear smalle r and
farther away than when seen in a flat mirror . If you use this mirror to
e stimate d istances of fo llowing vehicles when changing lanes, yo u
cou ld estimat e in correc tly and cause a n acc id en t.
• I f the mirr or housing is moved uninten tionally (for e xample,
wh ile par king your veh icle), then you must first fold the mirro r elec ­

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
The outsi de m irr or s are d immed t ogether w it h the au toma tic
dimming of the inside mirror. When the ignition is sw itched on, the
mi rrors dar ken automat ica lly depe nd ing on t he ligh t stri kin g th em
(e.g. headl ights from the rear) .
When the in te rior lighting is switched on and when reve rse gear is
engaged, the mi rrors a re switched back to their or iginal b rightness
(not dimmed) .
& WARNING
The glass of the inside rear view mirror is layered and contains an
electrolyte to achieve its properties. Be aware of liquid electrolyte
leaking from a broken mirror glass . This liquid can cause irr itation
to skin , eyes, and respiratory system . If you get electrolyte in your
eyes or on your skin , immed iately rinse with plenty of water . If irri ­
tation persists, seek medical attention .

• If automatic dimming for the inside mirror is switched off , the
outside mirrors are also not dimmed automatically.
• Automatic d imming for the mirror only operates properly if the
suns hade* fo r the rear w indow is re tr acted, or the l ig ht str iking the
inside mirror is not hindered by other objects .•

Digital compass

Activating or deactivating the compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

To activate or deactivate, hold the @~fig. 56 button
down until the red display appears or disappears.
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The
directions are displayed as initials :
N (North), NE (Northeast), E
(East), SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest), W (West), NW
(Northwest).
[ i) Tips
To avoid inaccura te directions , do not allow any remote controls,
electrical systems, or metal parts close to the mirror. •

The correct magnetic deflection zone must be set in order
to display the directions correctly.

the set magnetic deflection zone appears on the interior
rear view mirror.
Adjust the magnetic deflection zone by repeatedly
pressing on the@ button. The set mode automatically
deactivates after a few seconds . •

vehicle is moving. If you do this while the vehicle is moving, you

passenger seat when the vehicle is not moving.

The switches can be moved in various directions to allow
precise adjustment.

Using the cigarette lighter
- Slide the cover open to reach t he cigarette lighter .
- Push the knob=> fig. 73 in .
- Wait unt il the cigarette light er k no b pops out.
Remove the cigarette ligh ter immedi ate ly and use it.
Re insert c igarette lighter into the socket after use .
Connecting an appliance
-Slide th e cover ope n to rea ch t he cigarette light er.
- Remove c iga rette lighter.
Plug in applia nce to be used.
T he socket of the cigarette lighter may be used for 12 -volt appli­
ances with maximum consumption o f up to 100 wa tts, such as a
flash light , small vacuum c leaner, e tc.
Before you purchase any accessories, always read and follow the

• Be car eful when u sing th e cigarette lighter . If you do not pa y

• Alway s remo ve obje cts from the instrument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around in side the vehicle while driving or
when a ccelerating or when applying the br ake s or when driv ing
around a corner .
• When you are driving m ake sure t hat anything you may h ave
placed in the center con sole or oth er storage lo cations cannot fall
out into the foot wells . In case of sudden braking you would not be
able to brake , depres s the clut ch or accelerate .
• Any articles of clothing that you have hung up must n ot inter ­
fere with the driver' s view. The coa t hook s are de sig ned only for
lightwe ight clothing. Ne ver hang any clothing with hard , po inted
or heavy obj ects in the pockets on the coat ho oks . Dur ing sudden
braki ng or in an ac cident · especiall y if the airbag i s de plo yed ·
