exhaust system has had sufficient time tocool. Depending on the amount of sootcollected by the diesel particulate filter,ambient temperature and altitude,operator commanded regeneration lastsapproximately 30 minutes.
Operator Commanded Regenerationwith Automatic Regeneration Control(If Equipped)
If your vehicle is operated with significantstationary operation, low speed drivecycles less than 25 mph (40 km/h), shortdrive cycles, drive time less than 15 minutesor the vehicle does not fully warm up,passive and active regeneration may notsufficiently clean the diesel particulatefilter system. You can switch off automaticregeneration until better driving conditionsare available, for example steady highspeed driving. You can then switchautomatic regeneration back on to cleanthe diesel particulate filter.
Switching Automatic RegenerationControl On and Off
To switch operator commandedregeneration on and off, use theinformation display control on the steeringwheel. See General Information (page111). Scroll to the exhaust cleaningmessage and then select Y or N to switchit On or Off.
How to Interrupt or Cancel OperatorCommanded Regeneration
If you need to cancel the operatorcommanded regeneration, pressing thebrake, accelerator or switching the engineoff stops the procedure. Depending on theamount of time you allowed the operatorcommanded regeneration to operate, sootmay not have had sufficient time to be fullyeliminated, but the exhaust system andexhaust gas may still be hot. If you shut
your vehicle off during operatorcommanded regeneration, you may noticeturbo flutter. This is a normal consequencecaused by shutting off a diesel engineduring boosted operation and is considerednormal.
Filter Service and Maintenance
Over time, a slight amount of ash buildsup in the diesel particulate filter, which isnot removed during the regenerationprocess. The filter may need to be removedfor ash cleaning at approximately120,000 mi (190,000 km) or it may needto be replaced with a new orremanufactured part. Actual mileagevaries depending on engine and vehicleoperating conditions. The filter may needto be replaced with a new orremanufactured part at approximately250,000 mi (400,000 km). Actualmileage varies depending on engine andvehicle operating conditions.
If filter service is required, theengine control system warninglamp illuminates in theinformation display.
If there are any issues with thediesel particulate filter system,the engine control systemwarning lamp and a serviceengine soon warning lampilluminate to inform you thatyour vehicle requires service. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.

Resonator and Tailpipe AssemblyMaintenance
Aftermarket devices or modifications tothe exhaust system may reduce theeffectiveness of the exhaust system aswell as cause damage to the exhaustsystem or engine. This may also degradevehicle performance and could lead toengine damage that may not be coveredby the vehicle Warranty.
Emission Control System Laws
WARNING
Do not remove or alter the originalequipment floor covering orinsulation between it and the metalfloor of the vehicle. The floor covering andinsulation protect occupants of the vehiclefrom the engine and exhaust system heatand noise. On vehicles with no originalequipment floor covering insulation, do notcarry passengers in a manner that permitsprolonged skin contact with the metalfloor. Failure to follow these instructionsmay result in fire or personal injury.
In the United States, federal law andcertain state laws prohibit removing orrendering the emission control systeminoperative. Similar federal or provinciallaws may apply in Canada. We do notrecommend any vehicle modificationwithout determining applicable law.
Tampering with emissionscontrol system, including relatedsensors or the diesel exhaustfluid injection system can result in reducedengine power and the service engine soonwarning lamp illuminating in theinformation display.
Tampering with a Noise ControlSystem
Federal law prohibits the following acts orthe causing thereof:
•The removal or rendering inoperativeby any person other than for purposesof maintenance, repair or replacementof any device or element of designincorporated into any new vehicle forthe purpose of noise control prior to itssale or delivery to the ultimatepurchaser or while it is in use.
•The use of the vehicle after such deviceor element of design has been removedor rendered inoperative by any person.
Among those acts, which the United StatesEnvironmental Protection Agency maypresume to constitute tampering are theacts listed below:
•Removal of hood blanket, fender apronabsorbers, fender apron barriers,underbody noise shields or acousticallyabsorptive material.
•Tampering or rendering inoperative theengine speed governor, to allow enginespeed to exceed manufacturer’sspecifications.
The complexity of the diesel engine makesit so the owner is discouraged fromattempting to perform maintenance otherthan the services described in this Owner'sManual.
If you experience difficulty starting theengine, rough idling, excessive exhaustsmoke, a decrease in engine performanceor excess fuel consumption, perform thefollowing checks:
•A plugged or disconnected air inletsystem or engine air filter element.
•Water in the fuel filter and waterseparator.
•A clogged fuel filter.
•Contaminated fuel.

In order to prevent the engine from runningat too low an RPM, which may cause it tostall, SelectShift will still automaticallymake some downshifts if it has determinedthat you have not downshifted in time.Although SelectShift will make somedownshifts for you, it will still allow you todownshift at any time as long as theSelectShift determines that damage willnot be caused to the engine fromover-revving.
SelectShift will not automatically upshift,even if the engine is approaching the RPMlimit. It must be shifted manually bypressing the + button.
Note:Engine damage may occur if youmaintain excessive engine revving withoutshifting.
The SelectShift Automatic transmissionfeature has two modes: PRS and M mode.
PRS (Progressive Range Selection)
Progressive Range Selection gives you theability to lockout gears from the automaticshifting range. This may provide you withan improved driving experience (forexample, in slippery conditions or whenexperiencing a steep grade).
With the gearshift lever in drive (D), pressthe – button to active PRS. The availableand selected gears are indicated on theinstrument cluster.
All available gears will display with thecurrent gear indicated. Press the – buttonagain to lock out gears beginning with thehighest gear. Example: press the – buttontwice to lock out 6th and 5th gears. Onlythe available gears will display and thetransmission will automatically shiftbetween the available gears. Press the +button to unlock gears to allow thetransmission to shift to higher gears. Thetransmission will shift automatically withinthe gear range you select.
Manual (M)
Moving the gearshift lever to the manual(M) position will allow you to manuallyselect the gear you desire. Only the currentgear will display. Use the buttons on thegearshift lever to manually select gears.Press the + button to upshift or the –button to downshift. Return thetransmission to a different gearshiftposition to deactivate manual control.

For proper operation, make sure that eachhub is fully engaged and that both hublocks are set to the same position (bothset to LOCK or both set to AUTO). Toengage LOCK, turn the hub lockscompletely clockwise; to engage AUTO,turn the hub locks completelycounterclockwise.
The ESOF 4WD system:
•provides 4x4 High engagement anddisengagement while the vehicle ismoving.
•is operated by a rotary control locatedon the instrument panel that allowsyou select 4x2, 4x4 High or 4x4 Lowoperation.
•uses auto-manual hub locks that canbe engaged and disengagedautomatically based on the 4x4 modeselected.
•will increase fuel economy when usedin the hub lock's recommended AUTOmode.
4WD Indicator Lights
Note:When a 4X4 system fault is present,the system will typically remain in whichever4X4 mode was selected prior to the faultcondition occurring. It will not default to 4X2in all circumstances. When this warning isdisplayed, have your vehicle serviced by anauthorized dealer.
4X2
Momentarily illuminates when2H is selected.
4X4 HIGH
Continuously illuminates when4H is selected.
4X4 LOW
Continuously illuminates when4L is selected.
CHECK 4X4
Displays when a 4X4 fault ispresent.
Using a Manual Shift On Stop(MSOS) 4WD system (If Equipped)
Note:High shift efforts may be encounteredwhen attempting to shift into and out of 4x4modes. It is recommended to allow thevehicle to roll at a speed below 3 mph(5 km/h) when shifting between modes.
2H (4X2)
For general on-road driving. Sends powerto the rear wheels only and should be usedfor street and highway driving. Providesoptimal smoothness and fuel economy athigh speeds
4H (4X4 High)
Used for extra traction such as in snow oricy roads or in off road situations. Thismode is not intended for use on drypavement.

Using the Electronic Shift on theFly 4WD system (If Equipped)
2H (4X2)
For general on-road driving. Sends powerto the rear wheels only and should be usedfor street and highway driving. Providesoptimal smoothness and fuel economy athigh speeds.
4H (4X4 HIGH)
Provides mechanically locked four-wheeldrive power to both the front and rearwheels for use in off-road or winterconditions such as deep snow, sand ormud. This mode is not for use on drypavement.
4L (4X4 LOW)
Provides mechanically locked four-wheeldrive power to both the front and rearwheels for use on low traction surfaces,but does so with additional gearing forincreased torque multiplication. Intendedonly for off-road applications such as deepsand, steep grades, or pulling heavyobjects. 4L (4X4 low) will not engage whileyour vehicle is moving above 3 mph(5 km/h); this is normal and should be noreason for concern. Refer to Shifting to orfrom 4L (4X4 low) for proper operation.
Shifting between system modes
Note:Momentarily releasing the acceleratorpedal when a shift in progress messagedisplays improves engagement ordisengagement performance.
Note:Do not perform this operation if therear wheels are slipping or when applyingthe accelerator pedal.
Note:Some noise may be heard as thesystem shifts or engages; this is normal.
Note:4X4 high mode is not intended foruse on dry pavement.
You can move the control from 2H or 4Hat a stop or while driving. The informationdisplay may display a message indicatinga 4X4 shift is in progress. Once the shift iscomplete the message center will thendisplay the system mode selected.
Shifting to or from 4L (4X4 low)
Note:Some noise may be heard as thesystem shifts or engages; this is normal.
Note:4x4 low mode is not intended for useon dry pavement.
1. Bring the vehicle to a speed of 3 mph(5 km/h) or less.
2. Place the transmission in N (Neutral).
3. Move the 4WD control to the desiredposition.
The information display will display amessage indicating a 4X4 shift is inprogress. The information display will thendisplay the system mode selected. If anyof the above shift conditions are not met,the shift will not occur and the informationdisplay will display information guiding thedriver through the proper shiftingprocedures.

If Shift Delayed Pull Forward appears inthe information display, transfer case geartooth blockage is present. To alleviate thiscondition, place the transmission in aforward gear, move the vehicle forwardapproximately 5 ft (1.5 m), and shift thetransmission back to neutral to allow thetransfer case to complete the range shift.
How Your Vehicle Differs FromOther Vehicles
WARNING
Vehicles with a higher center ofgravity (utility and four-wheel drivevehicles) handle differently thanvehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns,excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injury anddeath.
Truck and utility vehicles can differ fromsome other vehicles. Your vehicle may behigher to allow it to travel over roughterrain without getting hung up ordamaging underbody components.
The differences that make your vehicle soversatile also make it handle differentlythan an ordinary passenger car.
Maintain steering wheel control at alltimes, especially in rough terrain. Sincesudden changes in terrain can result inabrupt steering wheel motion, make sureyou grip the steering wheel from theoutside. Do not grip the spokes.
Drive cautiously to avoid vehicle damagefrom concealed objects such as rocks andstumps.
You should either know the terrain orexamine maps of the area before driving.Map out your route before driving in thearea. To maintain steering and brakingcontrol of your vehicle, you must have allfour wheels on the ground and they mustbe rolling, not sliding or spinning.
Driving Off-Road With Truck andUtility Vehicles
Note:On some models, the initial shift fromtwo-wheel drive to four-wheel drive whilethe vehicle is moving can cause somemomentary clunk and ratcheting sounds.This is the front drivetrain coming up tospeed and the automatic locking hubsengaging and is not cause for concern.
Note:Your vehicle may be equipped witha front air dam that can become damaged(due to reduced ground clearance) whentaking your vehicle off-road. This air damcan be taken off by removing 15 bolts.
Four-wheel drive vehicles are speciallyequipped for driving on sand, snow, mudand rough terrain and have operatingcharacteristics that are somewhatdifferent from conventional vehicles, bothon and off the road.
Power is supplied to all four wheelsthrough a transfer case. On four-wheeldrive vehicles, the transfer case allows youto select 4WD when necessary.Information on transfer case operation andshifting procedures can be found in thischapter. Information on transfer casemaintenance can be found in theMaintenance chapter. You should becomethoroughly familiar with this informationbefore you operate your vehicle.
Four-wheel drive (when you select a 4WDmode) uses all four wheels to power thevehicle. This increases traction, enablingyou to drive over terrain and roadconditions that a conventional two-wheeldrive vehicle cannot.

LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
This axle provides added traction onslippery surfaces, particularly when onewheel is on a poor traction surface. Undernormal conditions, the limited-slip axlefunctions like a standard rear axle. The axlemay exhibit a slight noise or vibrationduring tight turns with low vehicle speed.This is normal behavior and indicates theaxle is working.
ELECTRONIC LOCKING
DIFFERENTIAL (If Equipped)
Note:The electronic locking differential isfor off-road use only and is not for use ondry pavement. Using the electronic lockingdifferential on dry pavement will result inincreased tire wear, noise and vibration.
The electronic locking differential is adevice housed in the rear axle that allowsboth rear wheels to turn at the samespeed. The electronic locking differentialcan provide additional traction should yourvehicle become stuck. You can activatethe differential electronically and shift iton the fly within the differential operatingspeed range. The differential is for use inmud, rocks, sand, or any off-road conditionwhere you need maximum traction. It isnot for use on dry pavement.
The following conditions will affect theelectronic locking differential:
•The electronic locking differential willnot engage if your vehicle speed isabove 20 mph (32 km/h) in 4x2, 4x4Auto, or 4x4 High modes.
•The electronic locking differential willnot engage if your vehicle speed isabove or 56 mph (90 km/h) in 4X4Low.
•The electronic locking differential maynot engage if you press youraccelerator pedal during anengagement attempt. A message maydisplay in the instrument displayguiding you to release the acceleratorpedal.
•In 4x2, 4x4 Auto, and 4x4 High modes,the electronic locking differential willautomatically disengage at speedsabove 25 mph (41 km/h) and willautomatically reengage at speedsbelow 20 mph (32 km/h).
•In 4L (4X4 low), the electronic lockingdifferential will automaticallydisengage at speeds above 62 mph(100 km/h) and will automaticallyreengage at speeds below 56 mph(90 km/h).
•The AdvanceTrac system has theability to take over control of theelectronic locking differential anddisable it during driving maneuverswhen necessary.
When you switch the system on, if you donot meet the required conditions forelectronic locking differential activation,the instrument cluster will display theappropriate information guiding youthrough the proper activation process.
Activating the Electronic LockingDifferential
Note:Do not use electronic lockingdifferential on dry, hard surfaced roads.Doing so will produce excessive noise,vibration and increase tire wear.
Note:If the electronic locking differentialhas difficulty disengaging, release theaccelerator pedal and turn the steeringwheel in the opposite direction while rolling.

For 4WD vehicles
Pull the 4WD control knob toward you.
For 2WD vehicles
Turn the control to ON.
Once the indicator lightilluminates in the informationdisplay, both rear wheel axleshafts will be locked together providingadded traction.
If the indicator does not come on, or theindicator turns off while driving, one of thefollowing has occurred:
•The vehicle speed is too high.
•The left and right rear wheel speeddifference is too high during anengagement attempt.
•The system has malfunctioned and isaccompanied by CHECK LOCKINGDIFFERENTIAL in the informationdisplay. See your authorized Forddealer for assistance.

Apply the parking brake whenever yourvehicle is parked. Press the pedaldownward to set the parking brake. Thebrake warning lamp in the instrumentcluster will illuminate and remainsilluminated until the parking brake isreleased.
To release, pull the brake release leverlocated at the lower left side of theinstrument panel.
If you are parking your vehicle on a gradeor with a trailer, press and hold the brakepedal down, then set the parking brake.There may be a little vehicle movement asthe parking brake sets to hold the vehicle'sweight. This is normal and should be noreason for concern. If needed, press andhold the service brake pedal down, thentry reapplying the parking brake. Chock thewheels if required. If the parking brakecannot hold the weight of the vehicle, theparking brake may need to be serviced orthe vehicle may be overloaded.
HILL START ASSIST
WARNINGS
The system does not replace theparking brake. When you leave yourvehicle, always apply the parkingbrake and shift the transmission into park(P) (automatic transmission) or first gear(1) (manual transmission).
You must remain in your vehicle onceyou have activated the system.
During all times, you are responsiblefor controlling your vehicle,supervising the system andintervening, if required.
If the engine is revved excessively, orif a malfunction is detected, thesystem will be deactivated.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicle willremain stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows you time to move yourfoot from the brake to the acceleratorpedal. The brakes release automaticallywhen the engine has sufficient torque toprevent your vehicle from rolling down thegrade. This is an advantage when pullingaway on a slope, for example from a carpark ramp, traffic lights or when reversinguphill into a parking space.
The system will activate automatically onany slope that will cause significant vehiclerollback. For vehicles with a manualtransmission, you can switch this featureoff using the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 111). Thesystem will remain on or off depending onhow it was last set.
Note:There is no warning lamp to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with AutoHold, Hill Start Assist will not be availablewhile Auto Hold is active.
Using Hill Start Assist
1. Bring your vehicle to a completestandstill. Keep the brake pedalpressed and select an uphill gear (forexample, first (1) when facing uphill orreverse (R) when facing downhill).
2. If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system will activateautomatically.
3. When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle will remainon the slope without rolling away forabout two or three seconds. This holdtime will automatically be extended ifyou are in the process of driving off.

4. Drive off in the normal manner. Thebrakes will release automatically.
Switching the System On and Off
You can switch this feature on or off if yourvehicle is equipped with a manualtransmission and an information display.See General Information (page 111). Thesystem remembers the last setting whenyou start your vehicle.
If your vehicle is not equipped with amanual transmission and an informationdisplay, you cannot turn the system on oroff. When you switch the ignition on, thesystem automatically turns on.
