8 HFV6 Engine – Tech 2 Functions
8.1 Introduction
Do not use a Tech 2 that displays faulty data;
have the Tech 2 repaired. The use of a faulty
Tech 2 can result in misdiagnosis and the
unnecessary replacement of parts.
From the Main Menu, having selected Diagnostics / 2006 / RA Rodeo / Engine , the Tech 2 functions for the HFV6
engine, include:
F0: Diagnostic Trouble Codes
F1: Data Display
F2: OBD Data
F3: Snapshot
F4: Actuator Test
F5: Additional Functions
F6: Programming
8.2 Tech 2 Functions
F0: Diagnostic Trouble Codes
W hen this test mode is initiated, DTCs stored by the ECM can be displayed or cleared. W hen entered, there are three
additional modes for selection:
F0: Read DTC Information: All DTCs stored in the ECM will be displayed.
F1: Clear Engine & Transmission DTCs: Clears all current DTCs in the ECM and TCM memories.
F2: Freeze Frame/Failure Records: Shows the Freeze Frame information. Freeze Frames are types of snapshots stored in the ECM memory.
F1: Data Display
• Use the Tech 2 Data List under the following conditions:
• The Diagnostic System Check – HFV6 Engine has been completed.
• The On-Board Diagnostics are functioning correctly.
• No DTCs are present.
NOTE
• Tech 2 values from an engine that is
operating correctly may be used for
comparison with the engine you are
diagnosing. The Tech 2 engine data lists
represent typical values that would be seen
on a normal operating engine.
• The Tech 2 Data Definitions list that follows
the Data Lists, is arranged in alphabetical
order and contains a brief description of all of
the engine related parameters that are
available.
The following ‘typical’ Tech 2 values were recorded under the following conditions:

8.6 Actuator Tests
Fuel Pump Relay Test
This test allows the Technician to turn the fuel pump on and off.
NOTE
To avoid the possibility of engine flooding and
subsequent catalytic converter damage, Tech 2
will deactivate the fuel pump relay after 2
seconds.
Precondition: Ignition ‘On’, engine ‘Off’.
Electronic Throttle Control Test
This selection from the Tech 2 Actuator Test menu, provides two parameters; the Calculated Throttle Position and the
Desired Throttle Position. As the Technician increases or decreases the throttle opening in 10% increments, each of the
two parameters should be the same.
Preconditions: Ignition ‘On’, engine ‘Off’, vehicle speed is 0 km/h, there are no vehicle speed DTCs set and the ECM is
not performing a throttle learn procedure.
A/C Relay Test
Allows the Technician to turn the air conditioning relay ‘On’ and ‘Off’.

Starter Motor Relay Test
The engine will crank and start during the
starter relay test.
Allows the Technician to turn the starter relay ‘On’, thereby activating the starter motor and cranking the engine.
Preconditions: Apply park brake, firmly apply foot brake, ignition ‘On’, engine ‘Off’, transmission in Park or Neutral.
Fuel Injector Balance
This test allows the Technician to check the fuel flow through each injector when the engine is not running. The
sequence of events are:
1 Install a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail.
2 Select ‘Fuel Injector Balance Test’, from the ‘Actuator Test’ menu on Tech 2
3 Activate the fuel injector balance test with Tech 2. This action activates the fuel pump and stabilises the fuel delivery system fuel pressure. The fuel pump is then turned off.
4 Note the stabilised fuel rail pressure.
5 W hen the pump is turned ‘Off’, the injector is activated for a pre-determined time.
6 The fuel pressure drop is then noted from the fuel pressure gauge.
NOTE
For a detailed procedure and analysis of fuel
injector condition, refer to 5.3 Fuel Injector
Balance Test.
8.7 Programming
F0: ICU Link to ECM/PIM : Should the ECM, PIM or ICU be replaced, the modules must be security linked to
each other. If this linking procedure is not performed, the vehicle will not crank nor run. For additional
information relating to Tech 2 and the linking procedure, refer to 11A – Immobiliser.
NOTE
After an ECU reset, the ignition switch must be
turned Off for at least 10 seconds and then
turned On for at least one minute, before
attempting communication between Tech 2 and
the ECU.
Preconditions: TIS approval (TIS 2000 Security Access) must be obtained, the four digit security number
entered into Tech 2 and the theft deterrent system disarmed. Then the ignition must be turned ‘On’, using a
programmed remote coded key.
F1: Reset ECU : This function erases the security link between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the
Powertrain Interface Modules (PIM). If this procedure is performed, the engine will not crank nor run. A ICU
Link to ECM/PIM procedure will need to be performed. For additional information relating to the ICU Link to
ECM/PIM procedure, refer to 11A – Immobiliser.

13.1 Introduction

3 Tech 2 Information
3.1 Tech 2 Diagnostics
Tech 2, with the appropriate software, cables and adapters,
when connected to the serial data link connector (DLC) can
read seat and exterior rear-view mirror serial data. The DLC
is attached to the instrument panel trim retainer beneath the
steering wheel.

Test Modes
Tech 2 has six test modes for diagnosing the transmission. To get to these various test modes, on Tech 2 select:
Diagnostics / Model Year / Model / Vehicle Type / Transmission / Automatic Transmission
and follow Tech 2’s prompts. This will then display the following menu operations.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If Diagnostic Trouble Codes is selected, a selection list is displayed which contains:
• Read DTC Information – Once selected, both current and history diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the
transmission control module will be displayed.
• Clear Engine & Transmission DTC(s) – Once selected, DTCs stored in the transmission control module (TCM)
and engine control module (ECM) memory may be cleared.
• Freeze Frame / Failure Records – Shows Freeze Frame / Failure Records information. Freeze Frame / Failure
Records are types of snapshots stored in the memory of the TCM and contain data parameters from the TCM at
the time the DTC set.
NOTE
For a complete list of TCM DTCs, refer to
4.8 Diagnostic Trouble Code List. For
further information on Tech 2 and it functions,
refer to 0C Tech 2.
Data Display
If Data Display is selected, a selection list is displayed which contains:
• Transmission Data – Once is selected, a list of transmission components and the TCM inputs are displayed along
with their status.
• TCC Data – Once selected, displays specific parameter information about the torque converter clutch controlling
devices and their circuits.
• 1-2 Shift Data – Once selected, displays specific parameter information about the 1-2 shift solenoid valve (shift
solenoid A) and its circuits.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes
The purpose of the “Diagnostic Trouble Codes” mode is
to display stored TCM trouble codes.
W hen “Diagnostic Trouble Codes” is selected an
“Application Menu” screen appears.
Read DTC Information
W hen “Read DTC Information” is selected, an
“Application Menu” appears with a list of DTC
information function keys addressing DTC specifics and
their origins.
Function key selections may vary for particular vehicle
and/or system.
Requested emission-related DTCs
Clear DTC Information
The purpose of the “Clear DTC Information” mode is to
command the clearing of stored TCM trouble codes.
W hen “Clear DTC Information” is selected, a “Clea
r
DTC Information”, warning screen appears. This screen
informs you that by cleaning DTC's, “all stored DTC
information in controller will be erased”.
Do you want to clear DTC's (Yes/No).
Press either the Yes or No key when answering.
After clearing codes, confirm system operation by test-
driving the vehicle.
Allow the vehicle to shift through all four forward gears
in a manner which attempts to repeat the failure
condition.
NOTE: W hen the trouble has not been repaired and
the trouble code cannot be erased, check the vehicle
again.
Data Display
The purpose of the “Data Display” mode is to
continuously monitor data parameters.
The current actual values of all important sensors and
signals in the system are displayed through F1 mode.
W hen “Data Display” is selected an “Application Menu”
appears. “Transmission Data Display”.
See “Transmission Data” on next page.
Snapshot
W hen “Snapshot” is selected an “Application Menu”
appears.
W hen “Transmission Snapshot” application is selected
from the “Application Menu”, a “Snapshot Menu”
appears, displaying several options. “Snapshot” options
may vary from one system to another.
“Snapshot” allows a recording of all vehicle parameters.
There parameters may then be replayed at a future
point in time.
This action allows you to focus on making the condition
occur, rather than trying to view all of the data in
anticipation of the fault. The snapshot will collect
parameter information around a trigger point that you
select.
W hen a snapshot is taken, it is recorded onto the
PCMCIA memory card. W hen the Tech 2 is powered
down. Snapshots are not lost.
Actuator Test
The purpose of “Actuator Test” mode is to check fo
r
correct operation of electronic system actuators.
Solenoid 2-3 Test, Solenoid 1-2/3-4 and Test TCC
Solenoid Test
You can operate the solenoids by pressing the “ON”
and “OFF” buttons.
Preconditions: P–N position, no vehicle speed, no
engine speed
Pressure Control Solenoid (PCS)
You can set desired PCS Current using the “ON” and
“OFF” button. The PCS Data informs about PCS
Current, Pressure and Duty Cycle.
Preconditions: P–N position, no engine speed, no
vehicle speed
3rd Start Lamp Test, Power Lamp Test, AT Oil
Temperature Lamp Test and Check Light Test
You can operate the lamps by pressing the “ON” and
“OFF” buttons.
Preconditions: none
NOTE: Freeze Frame
Freeze Frame is an element of the Diagnostic
Management System which stores various vehicle
information at the moment an emission-related fault
is stored in memory and when the Check Trans
Lamp is commanded on. These data can help to
identity the cause of a fault. Refer to Storing An
d

information.
