Suspension System - General Information - Front Camber and Caster

eral Procedures
• NOTE: Before any work is commenced, th e vehicle must be checked to establish that it conforms to the Jaguar original
specification, e.g. wheels, ti res, tire pressures, etc.
• NOTE: The vehicle must be unladen and the fuel tank full when measuring suspension geometry.

1.
Road test the vehicle to establish the exact nature of the
complaint, e.g. pulling to one side, wander.
2. Measure the suspension geometry, fill in the 'Suspension
Geometry Record Form', and co ntact Jaguar Technical Support
for assistance.
3. Technical Support will give advice on the course of action to be
taken to rectify the problem.
4. Each lower wishbone pivots on and is secured to the front
crossbeam by two fulcrum bolts. A circular eccentric flange
formed under the hexagonal head of each fulcrum bolt, has
raised graduation marks to indicate radial position. A washer
with a 'D' shaped hole locates on a flat on the threaded section
of each bolt. This ensures that the washer rotates with the bolt,
maintaining an eccentric position corresponding with the
flanged head. The outer face of the washer is punch marked,
ensuring correct instal lation with the chamfered face inwards.
This permits the washer to rotate freely in the crossbeam cam
reaction plate during a djustm ent. Each fulcrum bolt and
washer are secured by a self locking nut.
On rotation of the bolt, lateral movement of the eccentric flange
and washer is restricted by the cam plate faces, forcing the bolt
shank to move laterally in the crossbeam slots. Lateral
movement of the bolt shank re sults in corresponding inward
and outward movement of th e wishbone arm, effecting
adjustment of wh eel alignment.
Rotation of the front fulcrum bolt principally adjusts wheel
caster angle, with a small amount of camber angle change.
Adjustment of the rear fulcrum bo lt mainly alters wheel camber
angle with a small amount of caster angle change.
On vehicles with VIN up to 833124, fulcrum bolt eccentric
flanges have raised graduation marks representing 15 degree
increments of bolt rotati on from 0 to 90 degrees.
On vehicles with VIN from 833125, the fulcrum bolt graduation
marks represent bolt shank ho rizontal movement in 1mm
increments from 0 to 3mm.
The upper wishbone and fulcrum shaft are not adjustable and
play no part in steering geometry adjustment.

Electronic Throt
tle
The
electronic throttle assembly, in resp
onse to signals from both the driver and the ECM, adjusts idle speed, sets the
throttle valve to the position requested by the driver's accelerator / throttle pedal, cruise and traction control, power
limitation and catalyst warm-up.
Mass
Air Flow Meter
The sensor i
s located in the air flow mete
r assembly and outputs an analogue voltag e to the ECM. This sensor measures air
flow into the engine inlet system and is calibrated to measure kg / hour.

take Air Temperature
Th
e intake air temperature sensor is loca
ted in the air flow meter assembly and outputs an analogue voltage to the ECM.
The ECM will substitute a default value eq ual to 50°C should this sensor fail.
Fuel Injectors
The eigh
t bottom fed fuel injectors are located in the fuel rails. Th
e fuel injectors are electromagnetic solenoid valves
controlled by the ECM. The pulse time for the injector combined with the fuel pr essure determines the volume of fuel
injected to the manifold.
Fue
l Delivery
The fu
el pump provides fuel to the fuel rail where the circulat
ing pressure is controlled by a pressure regulator valve; excess
fuel is returned to the fuel tank.
The pressure regulator valve is controlled by manifold depression so that fuel delivery pressure is maintained at
approximately 3 bar above manifold pressure.

with the ECM.

vel sensor . This signal is used by the ECM as an in put to certain diagnostics.

Excess vapour

formed in the fuel tank is
absorbed into the evaporative emission pu rge control canister. While the engine is
running, the fuel absorbed in the canister is gradually purged back into the engine. The rate of purging is governed by
engine operating conditions and vapour concentration level. Operating conditions which affect the purge rate are:

16. Disconnect the air cleaner cover.
Remove the five clips which se cure the air cleaner cover.

17. Remove the intake tube / air flow meter / air cleaner cover
assembly.
1. Remove the intake tube / air flow meter / air cleaner
cover assembly.
2. Remove and discard the ru bber seal; air intake tube
to throttle body.

18. Remove the centre trim panel from the engine compartment.
1. Remove the left hand side enclosure panel.
2. Remove the centre trim panel.
19. Release the hoses (Quick Fit connections) from the expansion
tank, using 303 - 623.
1. Release the hose, expansion tank to thermostat housing (coolant outlet pipe on supercharged
engines).

2. Release the hose, expansion tank to recovery tank.
3. Release the hose, expansion tank to radiator.
20. Fit blanking plugs to the pipes and the tank.

21. Remove the expansion tank from the mounting.
1. Disconnect the coolant level sensor connector.
2. Remove the nuts which secure the tank.

22. Remove the expansion tank from the vehicle.
1. It may be necessary to us e a pipe clamp to clamp the
bottom hose branch.
2. Release the pipe clip an d move it along the pipe.
3. Disconnect the tank from the bottom hose and remove it from the vehicle.
23. Empty any remaining coolant from the expansion tank into a
drain tray.
24. Remove the cloth from the engine and clean any spillage from
the engine bay.

25. Disconnect the radiator breather hose.
Release the Quick-Fit hose (radiator to expansion tank)
using 303 - 623, and disconnect the hose from the
radiator.
26. Remove the twin fan and motor assembly. Refer to Operation
26.25.12.

3.
Fit the hose and tighten the securing bolt.

ct the transmission
oil cooler upper pipe.
1. Remove the blanking plugs from the pipe and the radiator.
Fit and
fully seat a new O-ring
seal to the pipe. Lubricate
the seal with clean transmission oil
2. Reposition and connect the union nut, upper cooler pipe to radiator.

44. Fit the twin fan and motor assembly. Refer to Operation
26.25.12.

45 . Connect
the radiator breather hose.
Re

sition the Quick-Fit hose (radiator to expansion tank)
and connect the hose to the radiator.
46. Fit the expansion tank to the vehicle.
1. Remove the pipe clamp if still in place and connect
the hose to the expansion tank.
