ESP SYSTEM
(Electronic Stability Program)
(where provided)
The ESP system is an electronic system controlling
the car stability in the event of tyre grip loss.
The ESP system is therefore particularly useful
when grip conditions of the road surfaces change.
ESP SYSTEM INTERVENTION
It is indicated by the blinking of the warning light
áon the instrument panel, to inform the driver that
the car is in critical stability and grip conditions.
The performance of the system, in terms of active
safety should not induce the driver to take pointless
and unnecessary risks. The style of driving must in
any case always be adapted to the conditions of the
road surface, visibility and traffic. Road safety is
always the driver’s responsibility. ESP SYSTEM OPERATION
The ESP system is automatically inserted when the
car is started and cannot be deactivated.
FAILURE WARNINGS
In the event of failure, the ESP system is
automatically disconnected and the warning light
áwill come on with fixed light on the instrument
panel together with the message on the
multifunction display. In this case contact a Lancia
Dealership as soon as possible.
WARNING
The performance of the system, in terms of active safety should not induce the
driver to take pointless and unnecessary risks. The style of driving must in any
case always be adapted to the conditions of the road surface, visibility and
traffic. Road safety is always the driver’s responsibility.

HILL HOLDER SYSTEM (where provided)
It is an integral part of the ESP system and
facilitates starting on an uphill slope.
It is automatically activated in the following
conditions:
Uphill: vehicle stationary on a road with gradient
above 2%, engine running, clutch and brake pedals
pressed and gearbox in neutral position or gear
engaged (reverse excluded).
Downhill: stationary on a road with gradient above
2%, engine running, clutch and brake pedals
pressed and reverse engaged.
During pickup the ESP system control unit
maintains the wheel braking pressure until the
engine torque required for start up is reached, or
anyway for a maximum of 2 seconds, so that the
right foot can be moved easily from the brake pedal
to the accelerator pedal. After 2 seconds and without starting the car, the
system automatically deactivates gradually releasing
the braking pressure. During this phase it is possible
to hear the typical brake mechanical disengaging
noise which indicates the car is about to move off.
Failure warnings
In the event of failure, the instrument cluster
warning light
*will come on together with the
message on the multifunction display.
IMPORTANT The Hill Holder system is not a
parking brake therefore, never leave the car without
engaging the parking brake, the first gear and
turning the engine off.

WARNING
During the use of the spare wheel, the ESP system carries on working.
However, you must remind that the spare wheel presents dimensions smaller
than the standard tyre and therefore the grip is reduced as to the other car
tyres.
WARNING
For correct operation of the ESP system, the tyres must absolutely be of the same
brand and type on all wheels, in perfect conditions and, above all, of the type,
brand and size specified.

ASR SYSTEM (Antislip Regulation)
It’s a function of ESP system and controls the vehicle
drive and cuts in automatically every time one or both
driving wheels slip.
In slipping conditions, two different control systems
are activated:
❒if the slipping involves both the driving wheels, the
ASR function intervenes reducing the power
transmitted by the engine;
❒if the slipping involves only one driving wheel, the
ASR system cuts in automatically braking the
wheel that is slipping. The action of the ASR is particularly helpful in the
following circumstances:
❒slipping of the inner wheel due to the effect of
dynamic load changes or excessive acceleration;
❒too much power transmitted to the wheels also in
relation to the conditions of the road surface;
❒acceleration on slippery, snowy or frozen surfaces;
❒in the case of loss of grip on a wet surface
(aquaplaning).

SWITCHING ON/OFF OF THE ASR SYSTEM
The ASR function switches on automatically each time the engine is
started.
When travelling, the ASR system can be switched off and on again by
pressing the ASR switch on the central control panel.
Switching on is indicated by the relevant message on the
multifunction display (where provided).
When the device is switched off this is shown by the lighting up of the
led on the ASR button and by the message on the multifunction
display .
If the ASR function is switched off when travelling, it will turn on
again automatically the next time the engine is started
When travelling on snow with snow chains, it may be helpful to turn
the ASR device off: in fact, in these conditions, slipping of the driving
wheels when moving off makes it possible to obtain better drive.

ACCESSORIES PURCHASED
BY THE OWNER
If, after buying the car, you decide to install
electrical accessories that require a permanent
electric supply (alarm, satellite antitheft system,
etc.) or accessories that in any case burden the
electric supply, contact Lancia Dealership, whose
qualified personnel, besides suggesting the most
suitable devices belonging to Lineaccessori Lancia,
will also evaluate the overall electric absorption,
checking whether the vehicle electric system is able
to withstand the load required, or whether it needs
to be integrated with a more powerful battery.
INSTALLATION OF ELECTRIC/ELECTRONIC
DEVICES
Electric/electronic devices installed after buying the
vehicle and in after-market shall bear the following
marking:
Fiat Auto S.p.A. authorizes the installation of
transceivers, provided that installation is workmanlike
performed in compliance with Manufacturer’s
specifications at a specialised service centre.
IMPORTANT The installation of devices involving
modifications of vehicle characteristics may
determine the withdrawal of the driving licence by
the appointed public authorities and the forfeiture ofthe warranty as concerns defects/failures due to said
modification or leading directly or indirectly to it.
Fiat Auto S.p.A. declines all responsibility due to
damages connected with the installation of
accessories/devices not supplied by or recommended
by Fiat Auto S.p.A. and installed not in compliance
with the specified prescriptions.
RADIO TRANSMITTERS AND CELLULAR
TELEPHONES
Radio transceiver equipment (e.g.: e-tacs mobile
phones, HAM radio systems and the like) shall not
be used inside the car unless a separate aerial is
mounted outside the car.
The use of these devices inside the passenger
compartment (without external aerial) may cause
electrical systems equipping the car to malfunction.
This could compromise car safety in addition to
constituting a potential hazard for the passengers.
In addition, transmission and reception of these
devices may be affected by the shielding effect of
the car body.
As concerns the use of mobile phones (GSM, GPRS,
UMTS) provided with official EC approval, strictly
comply with the instructions given by the mobile
phone manufacturer.

FAILURE WARNINGS
Any electric power steering failure is indicated by
cluster warning light gcoming on (together, with
the message on the multifunction display - see the
“Warning lights” chapter).
In the event of electric power steering failure, the
car can be driven with mechanical steering to the
closest Lancia Dealership.IMPORTANT The steering may become slightly stiff
following parking manoeuvres including a great
deal of steering. This is normal and caused by the
system to prevent motor overheating. No servicing is
required. The electrical power steering system will
return to normal operation the next time the car is
used.

ENGINE STARTING
The car is fitted with an electronic engine lock
device. If the engine fails to start, see paragraph
“Lancia CODE system” in section “Dashboard and
controls”.
The engine may be noisier than usual during the
first seconds of operation, especially after it has not
been used for a while. This characteristic feature of
the hydraulic tappet system does not compromise
functionality or reliability. The system devised for
the Lancia Musa was designed to limit maintenance
interventions.STARTING PROCEDURE FOR PETROL
VERSIONS
Proceed as follows:
❒Ensure that the handbrake is up;
❒Put the gear lever into neutral;
❒Press the clutch pedal down to the floor without
touching the accelerator;
❒Turn the ignition key to AVV and let it go the
moment the engine starts.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt,
return the ignition key to STOP before repeating
starting.
If, when the ignition key is on MAR, warning light
Yremains lit together with warning light U, turn
the key to STOP and then back to MAR; if the
warning light remains on, try with the other keys
provided with the car.

USE OF
THE CAR
We recommend that during the initial period you do not drive to full vehicle performance (e.g.:
excessive acceleration, long journeys at top speed, sharp braking, etc.).
When the engine is switched off never leave the ignition key in the MAR position to prevent
pointless current absorption from draining the battery.
WARNINGRunning the engine in confined areas is extremely dangerous. The engine consumes
oxygen and produces carbon monoxide which is a highly toxic and lethal gas.
