SEATS AND SEATBELTS
3–22
WARNING
(1)All seat belt assemblies including
retractors and attaching hardware
should be inspected by an author-
ized MITSUBISHI dealer after any
collision. We recommend that seat
belt assemblies in use during a
collision be replaced unless the
collision was minor and the belts
show no damage and continue to
operate properly.
(2)Do not attempt to repair or replace
any part of the seat belt assem-
blies; this work should be done by
an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
Failure to have an authorized MIT-
SUBISHI dealer perform the work
could reduce the effectiveness of
the belts and could result in seri-
ous injury in the event of a colli-
sion.
(3)Once the pre-tensioner has acti-
vated, it cannot be re-used.
It must be replaced together with
the retractor.
(4)The entire pre-tensioner seat belt
system must be inspected by an
authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
Supplemental restraint
system (SRS) - air bag
EG29A-Fa
The information written in this supplemental
restraint system (SRS) section contains im-
portant points concerning the driver, front
passenger, side air bags and pre-tensioner
seat belts.
The SRS air bags are designed to supple-
ment the primary protection of the driver and
front passenger side seat belt systems by
providing those occupants with protection
against head and chest injuries in certain
moderate-to-severe frontal collisions.
The SRS side air bag is designed to supple-
ment the seat belts and provide the driver
and front passenger with protection against
chest and abdomen injuries in certain mod-
erate-to-severe side impact collisions.
The SRS is NOT a substitute for the seat
belts; for maximum protection in all types of
crashes and accidents, seat belts should
ALWAYS be worn by everyone who drives or
rides in this vehicle. (With infants and small
children in child restraints and older children
buckled in the rear seat).
WARNING
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS
PROPERLY WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT,
EVEN WITH AN AIR BAG:
(1) Seat belts help keep the driver
and front passenger properly
positioned which reduces injury
risk in all collisions, and reduces
the risk of serious or fatal injuries
when the air bags inflate.
During sudden braking just be-
fore a collision, an unrestrained
or improperly restrained driver or
front passenger can move for-
ward into direct contact with or
within close proximity to the air
bag which may then deploy dur-
ing the collision.
The initial stage of air bag infla-
tion is the most forceful which
could cause serious or fatal in-
juries if the occupant contacts it
at this stage.
(2) Seat belts reduce the risk of injury
in roll-overs, side or rear impact
collisions, and in lower-speed
frontal collisions, because
driver’s and passenger’s air bags
are not designed to inflate in
those situations.

5. When the gun stops automatically, re-
move the gun half the way in the tank
port. After the second automatic stop,
do not fill with fuel any more.
CAUTION
To avoid fuel spillage and overfilling,
do not ”top–off” the fuel tank.
6. To close, turn the fuel tank filler tube
cap slowly clockwise until you hear
clicking sounds, then gently push the
fuel tank filler door closed.
CAUTION
If you need replace the fuel tank filler
tube cap, use only the cap specified
for your model vehicle.
C18A001a
Catalytic converterEC18A-Jc
For ordinary use, there are no particular pre-
cautions except that of using unleaded pet-
rol.
The exhaust gas scavenging device with
catalytic converter is extremely efficient for
the reduction of noxious gases. The catalytic
converter is installed in the exhaust system.
It is important to keep the engine properly
tuned to ensure proper catalyst operation
and prevent possible catalyst damage.
CAUTION
Damage to the catalytic converter can
result if your vehicle is not kept in
proper operating condition. In the
event of an engine malfunction par-
ticularly involving engine misfire or
other apparent loss of performance
have your vehicle serviced promptly.
Continued operation of your vehicle
with a severe overheated condition
may result in possible damage to the
converter and vehicle.
WARNING
(1) As with any vehicle, do not park
or operate this vehicle in areas
where combustible materials
such as dry grass or leaves can
come into contact with a hot ex-
haust since a fire could occur.
(2) Undercoating paint should not be
applied to the catalytic converter.

Changing gearsEI03CMKg
Always use care to change the gear with the
vehicle speed matched to the engine speed.
Proper shifting will improve fuel economy
and prolong engine life.
Avoid shifting down at high speed, as this
may cause excessive engine speed (on ve-
hicles with a tachometer, the tachometer
needle into the red zone) and damage the
engine.
Economical driving speedThe following shift points are recommended
to assist fuel economy. The driver may vary
these points to suit driving conditions and
load.

Designed for optimum control and equipped
with adaptive control capabilities, the elec-
tronically controlled transmission optimally
matches gear shifts to almost all driving and
road conditions.
CAUTION
This system is strictly intended to
provide supplementary functions.
When travelling downhill under cer-
tain conditions or immediately after
starting off when the automatic trans-
mission is cold, no automatic shift-
down may be made. The driver should
shiftdown to a lower gear to use en-
gine braking. Try to drive safely at all
time.

NOTE
During running–in period or immediately
after reconnection of the battery cable, there
may be a case where gearshifts are not
made smoothly. This does not indicate a
faulty transmission.
Gearshifts will become smooth after the
transmission has been shifted several times
by the electronic control system.

Selector lever operation
Except for vehicles with Sports modeThe transmission has 4 forward gears and 1
reverse gear.
The individual gears are selected automati-
cally, depending on the position of the gear
selector lever, the speed of the vehicle and
the position of the accelerator pedal.
The selector lever has 7 positions, and is
equipped with a lock button (A) to avoid inad-
vertent selection of the wrong gear.
Button must be pushed and brake
pedal must be depressed to move
the lever
Button must be pushed to move the
lever.
Button need not be pushed to move
the lever.

Vehicles with Sports modeThe transmission has 4 forward gears and 1
reverse gear.
The individual gears are selected automati-
cally, depending on the position of the gear
selector lever, the speed of the vehicle and
the position of the accelerator pedal.
The selector lever has 2 gates; the main gate
(1) and the manual gate (2).

CAUTION
If the “N” (NEUTRAL) indicator lamp
in the selector lever position indicator
flashes while you are driving, there
could be a malfunction in the auto-
matic transmission. (If the selected
lever position is in the “P” (PARK),
“R” (REVERSE) or “N” (NEUTRAL)
position, the indicator lamp does not
flash.) Identify and rectify the problem
in accordance with the following pro-
cedure.
CAUTION
[The “N” indicator lamp flashes rapid-
ly (twice per second)]
The automatic transmission fluid is
overheating.
Park your vehicle in a safe place but
do not turn off the engine. Move the
selector lever to the “P” (PARK) posi-
tion and open the bonnet. Keep the
engine idling.
After a while, move the selector to the
“D” position and confirm that the “N”
indicator lamp stops flashing. It is safe
to continue driving if the “N” indicator
lamp no longer flashes.
Be sure to carry out this check with
the selector lever in the all forward
position except for “P” (PARK), “R”
(REVERSE) or “N” (NEUTRAL). The
“N” indicator lamp warning function
operates only in these positions.
If the “N” indicator lamp continues
flashing or flashes intermittently,
have your vehicle inspected by an
authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.

3 - THIRD/2 - SECOND
(Except for vehicles with Sports
mode)
This position is for extra power when driving
up moderately steep hills, and for engine
braking when descending moderately steep
gradients.
L - LOW
(Except for vehicles with Sports
mode)
This position is for driving up very steep hills
and for engine braking at low speeds when
descending steep gradients.
WARNING
This position can be used for maxi-
mum engine braking.
Be very careful not to shift into “L”
suddenly. Sudden engine braking
may cause the tyres to skid.
Select this position according to the
road conditions and vehicle speed.

A/T mode changeover switch
(Except for vehicles with Sports
mode)
EI04JADa
Two drive modes, “AUTO” and “HOLD”, can
be selected.
Each time you press the switch, the “AUTO”
and “HOLD” modes will switch alternately.
When the “HOLD” mode is selected, the
“HOLD” indicator illuminates on the instru-
ment panel.
AUTOSelect this position for normal driving.
In this position, your vehicle runs with econ-
omical fuel consumption when the acceler-
ator pedal is depressed moderately, and
runs powerfully when the pedal is depressed
heavily.
I04J020a
HOLDSelect the “HOLD” mode when starting your
vehicle on a slippery road surface for
example snow, and the vehicle will start
smoothly.
If you start your vehicle with the selector
lever in other than the “L” position, the ve-
hicle starts in 2nd gear.
When the vehicle speed reaches between
20 to 50 km/h, the gear is fixed in the highest
gear of the selected lever position.
(For example, if you select “D” position, the
vehicle starts in 2nd gear. As the vehicle
speed increases, the gear is shifted up and
when the vehicle speed exceeds approxi-
mately 50 km/h, the gear enters the 4th and
held in the 4th.) Therefore, you can drive like
driving the vehicle with manual transmission
by fully using the selector lever positions.
In the “HOLD” mode, depressing the accel-
erator pedal fully also causes the kick-down
operation.

For quick acceleration when passing,
depressing the accelerator pedal all the way
to the floor will cause the transmission to
automatically shift from 4th gear to 3rd gear,
from 3rd gear to 2nd gear or from 2nd gear
to 1st gear, in accordance with the driving
speed, without having to move the selector
lever from the “D” (DRIVE), “3” (THIRD) or “2”
(SECOND) positions.
NOTE
In sports mode, downshifts do not take place
when the accelerator is depressed all the
way to the floor.
Uphill/downhill drivingEI04O-Ia
DRIVING UPHILL
The transmission may not upshift to a higher
gear if the computer determines the current
speed cannot be maintained once a higher
gear is engaged.
For smoother vehicle performance, if you re-
lease the throttle while climbing a steep
grade, the transmission may not upshift. This
is normal, as the computer is temporarily
preventing shifting. After reaching the top of
the hill, normal gear shift function will re-
sume.
DRIVING DOWNHILL
When travelling down steep grades, the
computer may automatically select a lower
gear. This function assists engine braking ef-
forts, reducing the need for using the brakes.
