5. Make sure your battery electrolyte is at the proper level. (Refer to “Battery” on page 9-12.) 6. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery (A), and the other end to the posi-tive (+) terminal of the booster battery (B).
7. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (B), and the other end to theengine block of the vehicle with the low battery (A) at the point farthest from the battery.
8. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehiclewith the low battery. 9. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the reverse order from the wayyou connected them.
WA R N I N G If the electrolyte fluid is not visible, or looks frozen, DO NOT ATTEMPT JUMP STARTING!!The battery might split open or explode if the temperature is below the freezing point or if it is not filled to the properlevel.
NOTE
Open the terminal cover before connecting the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery. (Refer to “Battery” on page 9-12.) Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size. Otherwise heat damage to the cables couldresult. Check the jumper cables for damage and cor- rosion before use.WA R N I N G Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting the batteries, of:
Make sure that the connection is made to the engine properly. If the connection is directly made to the negative terminal ofthe battery, the flammable gases from inside the battery might catch fire and explode, causing personal injury.
When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal. Otherwise sparks can make the battery explode.CAUTION Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught in the cooling fan or other movingparts in the engine compartment.WA R N I N G Charging your battery while it is still in your vehicle might cause the battery to catch fire and explode. If you have to charge it while in the vehicle, disconnect the negative (-) terminal. Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using the battery in an enclosed space.WA R N I N G

If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge after the engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the informa- tion screen in the multi-information displaywill be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” blink. If this happens: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.
5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolant temperature warning display on the multi-information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, you can start driving again. If the bar graphstays in the red zone, turn off the engine. 6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the engine coolantreserve tank. If there is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant.
Remove all the caps before charging the battery. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolytecomes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

8. If the engine coolant reserve tank needs coolant, you will probably also need to add coolant to the radiator. Do not loosen or remove the radiator cap until the enginehas cooled down. 9. Start the engine, and slowly add coolant, up to the bottom of the filler neck. Useplain water if you have to (and replace it with the right coolant as soon as possible).
10. Replace the radiator cap and tighten it
fully. Check the engine coolant tempera- ture display on the multi-information dis- play. You can start driving again whenthe bar graph for the engine coolant tem- perature display returns to the normal zone.
11. Have the system inspected by your autho-
rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

WA R N I N G Removing the radiator cap could scald you with escaping hot water or steam.When checking the radiator level, cover the cap with a cloth before trying to remove it. Turn it slowly counterclock-wise, without pressing down, to the first notch. The pressure in the system will then be let out. When the pressure is COM-PLETELY LET OUT, press down and keep turning the cap counterclockwise until it comes off.

Before changing a tire, first stop your vehicle in a safe, flat location. 1. Park the vehicle on level and stable ground. 2. Set the parking brake firmly.3. On vehicles equipped with manual trans- axle, stop the engine and move the gear- shift lever to the “R” (Reverse) position.On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position,and stop the engine. 4. Turn on the hazard flashers and set up a warning triangle, flashing signal light,etc., at an adequate distance from the vehicle, and have all your passengers leave the vehicle.
5. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when it is raised on the jack, place chocks or blocks (A) in front of and behind the tire that is diagonally opposite from the tire(B) you are changing.
6. Get the jack, bar and wheel nut wrench ready. (Refer to “Jack and tools” on page 8-5.)

The compact spare tire is stowed beneath the luggage floor board of the luggage compart- ment. It is designed to save space in the lug- gage compartment. Its lighter weight makes iteasier to use if a flat tire occurs.
How to change a tire
WA R N I N G The jack should not be used for any pur- pose other than to change a tire. Never get under the vehicle or put any portion of your body under the vehicle while it is supported by the jack.
WA R N I N G Be sure to apply chocks or blocks to the correct tire when jacking up the vehicle. Ifthe vehicle moves while jacked up, the jack could slip out of position, leading to an accident.NOTE
The chocks shown in the illustration do not come with your vehicle. It is recommended that you purchase chocks or blocks and keepthem in the vehicle for use if needed. If chocks or blocks are not available, use stones or any other objects that are large enough to hold the wheel in position.
Spare tire information Compact spare tire
WA R N I N G Tires, including spare tire, degrade over time with age even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires over 6 years generally be replaced even ifdamage is not obvious.CAUTION While the compact spare tire is stowed, the inflation pressure should be checked at least once a month to assure that it remains at the recommended inflation pressure. See the tireand loading information placard attached to the driver’s door sill. Refer to “Tire and loading information placard” on page 11-2.

If your vehicle becomes stuck in snow, sand,or mud, it can often be
moved by a rocking
motion. Rock your vehicle back and forth to free it.Do not rev the engine or spin the wheels. Constant efforts to free a stuck vehicle can cause overheating and transaxle failure. Letthe engine idle for a few minutes to cool the transaxle before trying again. If your vehicle is still stuck after several rock-ing attempts, call for help.
When driving on a road covered with snow or ice, use snow tires. Tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle. Theremay be state or local regulations about using snow tires. Always check the regu- lations in your local area before usingthem. Refer to “Snow tires” on page 9-20 and “Tire chains” on page 9-20. Drive slowly. Do not make sudden starts or stops, sharp turns, or slam on thebrakes. Allow extra distance between your vehi- cle and the vehicle in front of you, andavoid sudden braking. If a skid occurs when the accelerator pedal is depressed, take your foot off thepedal. Steer gently in the direction of the skid. Your vehicle is equipped with an anti- lock braking system (ABS). Hold the brake pedal down firmly and keep it depressed. Do not pump the brake pedalwhich will result in reduced braking per- formance.

WA R N I N G When trying to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, make sure that there are no people nearby. The rocking motion can make your vehicle suddenly lurch forward or backward, and injure any bystanders.
On wet roads
CAUTION Avoid flooded roads. Water is often deeper than it looks, and you could be seriously hurt by driving into flood water. When driving in rain, on water-covered roads, or through a car wash, water could getinto the brake discs and make them fail tem- porarily. In such cases, lightly press the brake pedal to see if they are working prop-erly. If they are not, press the pedal lightly several times while driving to dry the brake pads or linings, then check them again. When driving in rain, a layer of water may form between the tires and the road surface(hydroplaning). This loosens your tires’ grip on the road, making it difficult to steer or brake properly. When driving on a wet road:• Drive your vehicle at a safe speed.• Do not drive on worn tires.• Always keep the tires at the correct infla- tion pressures.

The catalytic converter requires you to useunleaded fuel only. Leaded gasoline will destroy the emission-control effectiveness of the converter. Normally, the catalytic converter does not require maintenance. However, it is important to keep the engine properly tuned for the con- verter to continue to work properly.
Service precautions
WA R N I N G When checking or servicing the inside of the engine compartment, be sure theengine is stopped and has had a chance to cool down. If you need to work in the engine compart- ment with the engine running, be espe-cially careful that your clothing, hair, etc. does not get caught in
the fan, drive belts,
or other moving parts.
The fan can turn on automatically even if the engine is not running. Turn the igni- tion switch to the “OFF” position or put the operation mode in OFF to be safe while you work in the engine compart-ment. Do not smoke or allow open flames around fuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma- ble. Be extremely careful when working around the battery. It contains poisonous and corrosive sulfuric acid. Do not get under your vehicle while it is on a jack.Always use properly rated automotive jack stands. Handling your vehicle’s parts and materi- als in the wrong way can injure you. Ask an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealeror a repair facility of your choice if you have questions.WA R N I N G

To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage: Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”. Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter. Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests. Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when stopping the engine. Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or theengine has a malfunction such as with the ignition, etc. If you
are not able to stop
driving immediately, slow down and drivefor only a short time. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice as soon as possible. In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to a dealer or a repair facility of your choice for ser-vice.

Use the engine hood release lever (locatedunder the instrument panel near the driver’sdoor) to unlock the engine hood. Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.
CAUTION Damage to the catalytic converter can result if your vehicle is not kept in proper operating condition. If the engine malfunctions or mis- fires, or if your vehicle performance suffers, have it serviced promptly. Running yourvehicle when it is overheated may result in damage to the converter and vehicle.WA R N I N G Do not park or run your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur. need to add oil between the recommended oilchange intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently reinsert it all the way. Slowly pull the dipstick straight out andcheck the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th

above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the smallest amount of oil required, remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.

The engine coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quickly see when you need to add coolant. When the engine is cold, the level of the cool-ant in the reserve tank should be between the FULL and LOW marks. The radiator usually stays full so there is no reason to remove theradiator cap (B) except when you check thecoolant freeze point or replace the antifreeze coolant.
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Coolant provides excellent protection against corrosion and rust formation on all metals, including alumi- num, and prevents clogs in some parts of theengine. If you need to add co
olant often, or if the
level in the reserve tank does not drop whenthe engine cools, the cooling system shouldbe pressure-tested for leaks. Take your vehi- cle to an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer
or a repair facility of your choice for testing.
The radiator cap must be tight sealed to pre- vent losing coolant, which may result in engine damage. Only use a GenuineMitsubishi Parts radiator cap, or an approved equivalent. Do not overfill the reserve tank.

Do not use water to adjust the concentration of coolant. Do not top off the tank with plain water only. Water by itself boils at a lower temperatureand does not stop rust or freezing. If the water freezes, it will damage your cooling system. Do not use tapwater. It can causecorrosion and rust.

Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiator when the engine cools down. If you needto change the cap, use the exact same kind. Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con- tents of the reserve tank must be protectedagainst freezing. Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean. If the engine coolant temperature does not rise after the engine is warmed-up, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice to have the thermostat checked, and replaced if necessary.

The air cleaner filter will get dirty and dustyfrom use and not filter properly. Replace it with a new filter using the schedule in the“WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”. 1. Remove the upper cover and duct. For details, refer to “Removing and installingthe upper cover and duct” on page 9-9.
2. While holding down
the tab (A), pull out
the connector (B). 3. Unclamp the cover. Open up the top of the cover and take out the air cleaner filter.
4. Replacing the air cleaner filter and put the cover back on in its original position.
