The operation mode can be in any mode to start the engine.
The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 15 seconds if the engine switch is released at once. Pressing the engine switch again while the startermotor is still turning will stop the starter motor. The starter motor will be turning for up to approximately 30 seconds whilethe engine switch is pressed. If the engine does not start, wait for a while and then attempt to start the engineagain. Trying repeatedly with the startermotor still turning will damage the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2 for instructions. A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed up enough for driv-ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This is a system that automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depressthe accelerator pedal when starting the engine. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.3. Press and hold the brake pedal down with your right foot.
4. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 5. On vehicles equipped with manual trans- axle, place the gearshift lever in the “N”(Neutral) position. On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), make surethe selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 6. Press the engine switch. 7. Confirm that all warning lights and warn- ing displays are functioning properly.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rear window defogger, are turned off.2. While depressing the brake pedal {contin- uously variable transmission (CVT)} or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), pressthe accelerator pedal halfway and hold itthere, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal (CVT)or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then press theengine switch to crank the engine. If the engine does not start after 5 to 6 seconds, push the engine switch to stop crankingthe engine, and release the accelerator pedal. Put the operation mode in OFF.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up.
Starting the engine
NOTE
On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), the engine can only be started when the selector lever is inthe “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. For safety reasons, the engine should bestarted when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving wheels lock.NOTE
Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warmsup.

Wait a few seconds, and then press the engine switch to crank the engine again while depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), butdo not push the accelerator pedal. If the engine fails to start, repeat these proce- dures. If the engine still will not start, con-tact your local Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.
Startability of continuously variable trans- mission (CVT) vehicles with an ambienttemperature of
-22 °F (-30 °C) or lower
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to startfrom a standstill even with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans-axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If this occurs, place the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) positionand let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to start normally.Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.
N00568200014
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. Fully engage the parking brake while depressing the brake pedal. 3. On vehicles with a manual transaxle, press the engine switch to stop the engine, and then move the gearshift lever to the 1st (on a uphill) or “R” (Reverse) (on a downhill) position. On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then press the engine switch to stopthe engine.
N00568300028
Insert the F.A.S.T.-key into the key slot in the glove box. Starting the engine and changing the operation mode should be now possible. Remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the key slot after starting the engine
or changing the oper-
ation mode.
Stopping the engine
WA R N I N G Do not operate the engine switch while driving except in an emergency. If the engine is stopped while driving, the brake servomechanism will cease to function andbraking efficiency will deteriorate. Also, the power steering system will not func- tion and it will require greater manualeffort to operate the steering. This could result in a serious accident.NOTE
If you have to bring the engine to an emer- gency stop while driving, press and hold the engine switch for 3 seconds or more, or press it quickly 3 times or more. The engine willstop and the operation mode will go to ACC. On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), do not stop the engine with the selector lever in any position other than the “P” (PARK) position. If theengine is stopped with the selector lever in any position other than the “P” (PARK) posi- tion, the operation mode will go to ACC rather than OFF. Put the operation mode in OFF after placingthe selector lever in the “P” (PARK) posi- tion.

(if so equipped)
WA R N I N G Before operating the sunshade, make sure that nothing can be trapped (head, hands, fingers, etc.). Never leave a child (or other person who is incapable of safely operating the sunshade switch) alone in the vehicle. Do not bring your head, hand, finger, etc. near the opening edge of the sunshadereceptacle while the vehicle is in motion. It may cause injury to your head, hand, finger, etc. in the event of a sudden brak-ing.
CAUTION Do not place heavy luggage on the pan- oramic glass roof. Doing so could damage the glass roof. Do not hang heavy luggage from, allow a person to hang onto, or apply any other strong force to the opening of the sunshade receptacle or the parts between the ceilingand the sunshade opening on either side. Doing so could damage the sunshade.NOTE
Release the switch when the sunshade has reached a completely open or completely closed position. If the sunshade does not operate when the sunshade switch is operated, release the switch and check whether something istrapped by the sunshade. If nothing is trapped, have the sunshade checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Operating the sunshade repeatedly with the engine turned off will run down the battery.Operate the sunshade only while the engine is running. Close the sunshade when parking the vehicle for a long time. Parking in the hot sun withthe sunshade open will make the vehicle inside extremely hot.

This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from moving. The engine can be started from the “P” (PARK) position.
Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same as the neutral position ona manual transaxle and should be used when the vehicle is not moving for an extended length of time during driving, such as in atraffic jam.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overheating. The engine con- trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem-perature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease, In this case, take one of the following procedures.• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selectorlever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orflashes frequently, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice. [When warning display is showing] It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety device to activate. Whether the vehicle is stationary or inmotion, sports mode is selected by pushingthe selector lever from the “D” (DRIVE) position into the manual gate (A). To return
to “D” (DRIVE) operation, push the selector lever back into the main gate (B). In sports mode, rapid
shifting is possible sim-
ply by operating the selector lever or spor-tronic steering wheel paddle shifter. Unlike the manual transaxle, sports mode allows shifting with the accelerator pedaldepressed.
+ (SHIFT UP) Transmission shifts up once by each opera- tion. - (SHIFT DOWN) Transmission shifts down once by each oper- ation.
To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope, the engine should be started in the “P” (PARK) position, not in “N” (NEUTRAL) position. To prevent rolling, always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shift-ing into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion.

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) pushthe accelerator to the floor. The CVT will automatically downshift. For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be left in selector lever position and held stationary with the servicebrake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the selector lever in the “N”(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in “D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi-tion.
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and then move the selector lever to the “P”(PARK) position. If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speedwhen starting on an uphill slope, it may be that there is something unusual happening in the transmission, causing a safety device toactivate. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your ch

Hill start assist 5-62 Features and controls
5
N00517600436
Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with less brake pedaleffort. Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not beingused. If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit
or either of the two
brake hydraulic systems stops working prop- erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down asquickly. You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, orharder when slowing down or stopping, or if the brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display comeon. Have the brake system repaired at an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.
N00550700124
The disc brakes have an alarm that makes ametallic squeal when the brake pads have worn down enough to need service. If you hear this sound, have the brake padsreplaced at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
N00562600074
The hill start assist makes it easy to start off on a steep uphill slope by preventing thevehicle from moving backwards. It keeps the braking force for about 2 second when you move your foot from the brake pedal to theaccelerator pedal.
CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre- mature lining wear, and possible damage tothe brakes.
Power brakes
WA R N I N G Never coast downhill with the engine OFF. Keep the engine running whenever your vehicle is in motion. If you turn off theengine while driving, the power brake booster will stop working and your brakes will not work as well. If the power assist is lost or if either brake hydraulic system stops working properly, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice immediately.
Brake pad wear alarm
WA R N I N G Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.
Hill start assist
CAUTION Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to prevent backwards movement of the vehicle. Under certain circumstances, even when hillstart assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heavilyloaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do
not rely on using the
hill start assist to maintain a stopped positionas an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident.
