Remember nottodrive athigh speeds for
extended periodsoftime inlower thanM7
(except forNISMO RSmodels) orM8
(NISMO RSmodels) range.Thisreduces
fuel economy .
. Inthe manual shiftmode, thetransmis-
sion maynotshift tothe selected
range. Thishelps maintain drivingper-
formance andreduces thechance of
vehicle damage orloss ofcontrol.
When thissituation occurs,theCon-
tinuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
position indicator lightwillblink and
the chime willsound.
. Inthe manual shiftmode, thetransmis-
sion automatically shiftsdownto1st
gear before thevehicle comestoa
stop. When accelerating again,itis
necessary toshift uptothe desired
range.
. When theCVT fluidtemperature isextre-
mely low,the manual shiftmode maynot
work andautomatically shiftasadrive mode.
This isnot amalfunction. Inthis case, return
the shift lever tothe D(Drive) position and
drive forawhile andthen shifttothe manual
shift mode.
. When theCVT fluidtemperature ishigh, the
shift range mayupshift atalower engine
speed thanusual. Thisisnot amalfunction.
Accelerator downshiftÐInDposition Ð

For passing orhill climbing, fullydepress the
accelerator pedaltothe floor. Thisshifts the
transmission downintoalower gear,depending
on the vehicle speed.
High fluidtemperature protectionmode

This transmission hasahigh fluidtemperature
protection mode.Ifthe fluid temperature be-
comes toohigh (forexample, whenclimbing
steep grades inhigh temperature withheavy
loads) ,engine powerand,under somecondi-
tions, vehicle speedwillbedecreased auto-
matically toreduce thechance oftransmission
damage. Vehicle speed canbecontrolled with
the accelerator pedal,buttheengine andvehicle
speed maybelimited.
Fail-safe

If the vehicle isdriven underextreme
conditions, suchasexcessive wheelspin-
ning andsubsequent hardbraking, the
fail-safe systemmaybeactivated. TheMIL
may illuminate toindicate thefail-safe
mode isactivated. (SeeªMalfunction In-
dicator Light(MIL)º (P.2-18) .)This will
occur evenifall electrical circuitsare
functioning properly.Inthis case, place
the ignition switchinthe OFF position and
wait for10seconds. Thenturntheswitch

back tothe ONposition. Thevehicle
should returntoits normal operating
condition. Ifitdoes notreturn toits normal
operating condition, haveaNISSAN dealer
check thetransmission andrepair ifne-
cessary.
WARNING
When thehigh fluid temperature pro-
tection modeorfail-safe operation
occurs, vehiclespeedmaybegradually
reduced. Thereduced speedmaybe
lower thanother traffic,which could
increase thechance ofacollision. Be
especially carefulwhendriving. Ifne-
cessary, pulltothe side ofthe road ata
safe place andallow thetransmission
to return tonormal operation, orhave it
repaired if
necessary.

Shift lockrelease

If the battery charge islow ordischarged, the
shift lever maynotbemoved fromtheP(Park)
position evenwiththebrake pedal depressed
and theshift lever button pushed.
T o move theshift lever, perform thefollowing
procedure:
1. Place theignition switchinthe OFF or
L OCK position.
2. Apply theparking brake.
3. Remove theshift lockrelease cover

using asuitable tool. 4.
Push down theshift lockrelease usinga
suitable tool.
5. Push theshift lever button andmove the
shift lever tothe N(Neutral) positionwhile
holding downtheshift lockrelease.
Place theignition switchinthe ON position. The
vehicle maybemoved tothe desired location.
Replace theremoved shiftlockrelease cover
after theoperation.
If the battery isdischarged completely,the
steering wheelcannot beunlocked. Donot
move thevehicle withthesteering wheellocked.
If the shift lever cannot bemoved outofthe P
(Park) position, haveaNISSAN dealercheckthe
CVT system assoon aspossible.
WARNING
If the shift lever cannot bemoved from
the P(Park) position whiletheengine is
running andthebrake pedalisde-
pressed, thestop lights maynotwork.
Malfunctioning stoplights couldcause
an accident injuringyourself and
others.

. Fully depress theclutch pedalbe-
fore shifting tohelp prevent trans-
mission damage.
. Stop yourvehicle completely before
shifting intoR(Reverse) .
. When thevehicle isstopped fora
period oftime, forexample atastop
light, shifttoN(Neutral) andrelease
the clutch pedalwiththefoot brake
applied.

T o change gears,orwhen upshifting ordown-
shifting, fullydepress theclutch pedal, shiftinto
the appropriate gear,thenslowly andsmoothly
release theclutch pedal.
T o ensure smooth gearchanges, besure tofully
depress theclutch pedalbefore operating the
shift lever. Ifthe clutch pedalisnot fully
depressed beforethetransmission isshifted, a
gear noise maybeheard. Transmission damage
could occur.
Start thevehicle in1st gear andshift to2nd,
3rd, 4th,5thand 6thgear insequence accord-
ing tovehicle speed.

stopping thevehicle completely .
The shift lever ringreturns toits original position
when theshift lever ismoved tothe N(Neutral)
position.
If itis difficult tomove theshift lever intotheR
(Reverse) or1st gear, shifttothe N(Neutral)
position, andthen release theclutch pedalonce.
Fully depress theclutch pedalagainandshift
into theR(Reverse) or1st gear.

drive mode button. Thecontrol stateofthe
engine, CVT(ifso equipped) ,steering and
climate controlisdisplayed briefly.
When theECO drivemode isselected, the
current fueleconomy appearsonthe display
screen.
When theclimate ECOmode isalso switched on,
the climate controlsystem isadjusted to
further enhance fueleconomy .
The climate ECOmode canbeswitched onor
off inthe SETUP mode.SeeªSetting theclimate

. Many driving factors influence fuel
economy. SelectingtheECO drive

. Ifthe cruise control system malfunctions, it
will cancel automatically .The CRUISE in-
dicator lightonthe meter panelwillthen

. Ifthe engine coolant temperature becomes
excessively high,thecruise control system
will cancel automatically .
. Ifthe CRUISE indicator lightblinks, turnthe
cruise control MAINswitch offand have the
system checked byaNISSAN dealer.
. The CRUISE indicator lightmayblink when
the cruise control MAINswitch isturned ON
while pushing theACCEL/RES, COAST/
SET orCANCEL switch.To properly setthe
cruise control system, perform thefollowing
procedures.
WARNING
Do not use thecruise control when
driving underthefollowing conditions:
. when itis not possible tokeep the
vehicle ataset speed
. inheavy traffic orintraffic that
varies inspeed .
onwinding orhilly roads
. on slippery roads(rain,snow, ice,
etc .)
. invery windy areas

CAUTION
On Manual Transmission (MT)models,
do not shift intoN(Neutral) without
depressing theclutch pedalwhenthe
cruise control isset. Should thisoccur,

CRUISE CONTROL OPERATIONS

The cruise control allowsdriving ataspeed
between 25to89 MPH (40to144 km/h)
without keeping yourfootonthe accelerator
pedal.
T o turn onthe cruise control, pushtheMAIN
switch on.The CRUISE indicator lightwill
illuminate.
T o set cruising speed,accelerate thevehicle
to the desired speed,pushtheCOAST/SET
switch andrelease it.Take your footoffthe
CRUISE CONTROL
