If the tip clearance (2) exceeds the limit, replace gear set.

If body to gear clearances (1, 3, 4, 5) exceed the limit,
replace front cover assembly.
REGULATOR VALVE INSPECTIONNCLC0008
1. Visually inspect components for wear and damage.
2. Check oil pressure regulator valve sliding surface and valve
spring.
3. Coat regulator valve with engine oil.
Check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own
weight.
If damaged, replace regulator valve set or front cover assem-
bly.
4. Check regulator valve to front cover clearance.
Clearance:
6 : 0.052 - 0.088 mm (0.0020 - 0.0035 in)
If it exceeds the limit, replace front cover assembly.
Oil FilterNCLC0010The oil filter is a small, full-flow cartridge type and is provided with
a relief valve.

The new and previous oil filter designs differ from each
other and are not interchangeable.

Use Tool KV10115801 for removing oil filter.

REGULATOR VALVE INSPECTION
1. Visually inspect components for wear and damage.
2. Check oil pressure regulator valve sliding surface and valve
spring.
3. Coat regulator valve with engine oil. Check that regulator valve
falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.
If damaged, replace regulator valve set or oil pump cover.
4. Check regulator valve to oil pump cover clearance.
Clearance:
6: 0.040 - 0.097 mm (0.0016 - 0.0038 in)
If it exceeds the limit, replace oil pump cover.
Oil Filter
The oil filter is a small, full-flow cartridge type and is provided with
a relief valve.

The new and existing oil filter designs differ from each
other and are not interchangeable.

Use Tool KV10115801 or KV10115800 for removing oil fil-
ter.

Oil Cooler
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Drain engine oil and coolant.
2. Remove oil cooler.
3. Installation is in reverse order of removal

Be careful not to burn yourself as engine oil is hot

After installation, run engine for a few minutes and check
for oil leaks.

Do not spill coolant on drive belts.
INSPECTION
1. Check oil cooler for cracks.
2. Check oil cooler for clogging by blowing through coolant inlet.
If necessary, replace oil cooler assembly.

OIL PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE INSPECTION
Inspect oil pressure relief valve (indicated by arrow) for movement,
cracks and breaks by pushing the ball. If replacement is necessary,
remove valve by prying it out with a suitable tool. Install a new valve
by tapping it into place.

INSPECTION
1. Check oil cooler element and housing for cracks.
2. Check coolant inlet of oil cooler for clogging by blowing through

Shown below are Pre-delivery Inspection Items required for the new vehicle. It is recommended that
necessary items other than those listed here be added, paying due regard to the conditions in each
country.
Perform applicable items on each model. Consult text of this section for specifications.
UNDER HOOD engine off
Radiator coolant level and coolant hose con-
nections for leaks
Battery fluid level, specific gravity and condi-
tions of battery terminals
Drive belts tension
Fuel filter for water or dust, fuel lines and con-
nections for leaks
Engine oil level and oil leaks
Clutch and brake reservoir fluid level and fluid
lines for leaks
Windshield and rear window washer and head-
lamp cleaner reservoir fluid level
Power steering reservoir fluid level and hose
connections for leaks
ON INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
Remove front spring/strut spacer (If applicable)
Operation of all instruments, gauges, lights and
accessories
Operation of horn(s), wiper and washer
Steering lock for operation
Check air conditioner for gas leaks
Front and rear seats, and seat belts for opera-
tion
All moldings, trims and fittings for fit and align-
ment

PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION ITEMS

lIncomplete air bleeding will cause the following to occur.
When this happens, bleed air again.
a. Generation of air bubbles in reservoir tank
b. Generation of clicking noise in oil pump
c. Excessive buzzing in oil pump
While the vehicle is stationary or while moving the steering wheel
slowly, fluid noise may occur in the valve or oil pump. This noise
is inherent in this steering system, and it will not affect perfor-
mance or durability of the system.
Checking Steering Wheel Turning Force
1. Park vehicle on a level, dry surface and set parking brake.
2. Start engine.
3. Bring power steering fluid up to adequate operating tempera-
ture. [Make sure temperature of fluid is approximately 60 to
80ÉC (140 to 176ÉF).]
Tires need to be inflated to normal pressure.
4. Check steering wheel turning force when steering wheel has
been turned 360É from neutral position.
Steering wheel turning force:
44.1 N (4.5 kg, 9.9 lb) or less
5. If steering wheel turning force is out of specification, check
rack sliding force to detect condition of steering gear assem-
bly.
a. Disconnect steering column lower joint and knuckle arms
from the gear.
b. Start and run engine at idle to make sure steering fluid has
reached normal operating temperature.
c. While pulling tie-rod slowly from the neutral position, make
sure rack sliding force is within specification.
Rack sliding force:
284 N (29 kg, 64 lb) or less
6. If rack sliding force is not within specification, replace steer-
ing gear assembly.
