Demisting and defrosting the windscreen
Heated windscreen* and max. defroster are used to quickly remove misting and ice fromthe windscreen and side windows.
The selected setting is shown in the centre con- sole's screen.
Electric heating*
Max. defroster
The light in the defroster but- ton illuminates when thefunction is active. Press the button repeatedly in order to activate the func-tion.
For cars without heated windscreen:• Air flows to the windows - symbol (2) illu- minates in the screen.
• Switch off the function - no symbol illumi-nates.
For cars with heated windscreen:
• Start the heating for the windscreen 2
-
symbol (1) illuminates in the screen.
• Start the heating for the windscreen 2
and
air flow to the windows - symbols (1) and(2) illuminate in the screen.
• Switch off the function - no symbol illumi-nates.
NOTE
Heated windscreen and IR window (p. 17) may have an impact on the performance oftransponders and other communicationequipment.
NOTE
A triangular area at the end of each side of the windscreen is not electrically heated,where de-icing may take longer.
NOTE
Electrically heated windscreen is not avail- able when the engine is auto-stopped (p.279).
The following also takes place in order to pro- vide maximum dehumidification in the pas-senger compartment:
• the air conditioning is automatically engaged
• recirculation and the air quality systemare automatically disengaged.
NOTE
The noise level increases as the fan is operating at max.
When the defroster is switched off the climate control returns to the previous settings.

Engine and passenger compartment heater*
Preconditioning prepares the car's heater, engine and passenger compartment beforedeparture so that both wear and energyneeds during the journey are reduced. The heater can be started directly (p. 130) or with a timer (p. 130). The heater cannot start if the outside tem- perature exceeds 15 °C. At –5 °C or lower themaximum running time of the heater is 50minutes.
WARNING
Do not use the fuel-driven heater indoors. Exhaust gases are secreted.
NOTE
When the fuel-driven auxiliary heater is active there may be smoke from the right-hand wheel housing, which is perfectlynormal.
Refuelling

WARNING
Fuel which spills out could be ignited. Switch off the fuel-driven auxiliary heaterbefore starting to refuel. Check in the combined instrument panel that the heater is switched off. The heatsymbol is shown when it is operating.
Parking on a hillIf the car is parked on a steep hill, the front of the car should point downhill to ensure thatthere is a supply of fuel to the fuel-drivenheater.
Battery and fuelIf the battery has insufficient charge or thefuel level is too low, the heater will beswitched off automatically and a message appears on the information display. Acknowl-edge the message by pressing the indicatorstalk (p. 100)
OK button once.
IMPORTANT
Repeated use of the heater combined with short journeys leads to the battery dis-charging and consequential starting prob-lems. The car should be driven for the same time as the heater is used to ensure that thecar's battery is recharged adequately toreplace the energy consumed by theheater when it is used on a regular basis.The heater is used for a maximum of 50minutes each time.

Engine block heater and passenger compartment heater* - direct start/immediate stop
Upon direct start of the engine block and pas- senger compartment heater (p. 129), it will runfor 50 minutes. Heating of the passenger compartment will begin as soon as the engine coolant hasreached the correct temperature.
NOTE
The car can be started and driven while the fuel-driven auxiliary heater is running.
1. Press OK to access the menu.
2. Scroll with the thumbwheel to

heater and select with OK.
3. Scroll forward in the next menu to
Direct
start/Stop in order to activate/deactivate
the heater and select with OK.
4. Exit the menu with RESET.

Engine block heater and passenger compartment heater* - timer
The timer of the engine block and passenger compartment heater (p. 129) is connected tothe car's clock. Two different times can be selected using the timer. Here, time refers to the time when thecar is heated and ready. The car's electronicsystem calculates when heating should bestarted based on the outside temperature.
NOTE
All timer programming will be cleared if the car's clock is reset.

Symbols and display messages regarding the engine block and passenger compartment
heater (p. 129) differ depending on whetherthe combined instrument panel (p. 59) is ana-logue or digital.
When the heater has been activatedthe heat symbol illuminates in theinformation display.

Additional heater*
In cold climate zones 5
an additional heater
may be required to obtain the correct operat- ing temperature in the engine and to obtainsufficient heating in the passenger compart-ment. A fuel-driven additional heater (p. 134) is fit- ted in cars with diesel engines. In a semi-cold 5
climate zone diesel-driven
cars have an electric additional heater (p. 135) instead of a fuel-driven version. Cars with certain petrol engines 6
have an
electric additional heater integrated into the car's climate control system.

Fuel-driven additional heater*
The car is equipped with either an electric (p. 135) or a fuel-driven additional heater (p. 134). The heater starts automatically when extra heat is required when the engine is running. The heater is switched off automatically when the correct temperature is reached or whenthe engine is switched off.
NOTE
When the additional heater is active there may be smoke from the right-hand wheelhousing, which is perfectly normal.
Auto mode or shutdownThe additional heater's automatic start sequence can be switched off if required.
NOTE
Volvo recommends that the fuel-driven additional heater should be switched offfor short distances.

Electric additional heater*
The car is equipped with either a fuel-driven (p. 134) or an electric additional heater (p.134). The heater cannot be controlled manually, but is instead activated automatically after theengine has been started in outside tempera-tures below 14 °C and is switched off afterthe set passenger compartment temperaturehas been reached.

Loading
Payload depends on the car's kerb weight. Payload depends on the car's kerb weight. The total of the weight of the passengers andall accessories reduces the car's payload bya corresponding weight. For more detailedinformation on weights, see Weights (p. 390).
The tailgate is opened via a buttonon the lighting panel or the remotecontrol key, see Locking/unlocking -
tailgate (p. 167).
WARNING
The car’s driving properties change depending on the weight and positioningof the load.
To bear in mind when loading
• Position the load firmly against the rear seat's backrest.
Note that objects must not prevent the func- tion of the WHIPS system for the front seats ifany of the rear seat's backrests is foldeddown, seeWHIPS - seating position (p. 35).
• Centre the load.
• Heavy objects should be placed as low as possible. Avoid placing heavy loads onlowered backrests.
• Cover sharp edges with something soft toavoid damaging the upholstery. •
Secure all loads to the load retaining eye-lets with straps or web lashings.
WARNING
A loose object weighing 20 kg can, in a frontal collision at a speed of 50 km/h,carry the impact of an item weighing1000 kg.
WARNING
The protection provided by the inflatable curtain in the headlining may be compro-mised or eliminated by high loads.
• Never load cargo above the backrest.
WARNING
Always secure the load. During heavy braking the load may otherwise shift, caus-ing injury to the car's occupants. Cover sharp edges and sharp corners with something soft. Switch off the engine and apply the park- ing brake when loading/unloading longitems. Otherwise you may accidentallyknock the gear lever or gear selector withthe load into a drive position - and the carcould then move off.

Loading - bag holder
The bag holder keeps carrier bags in place and prevents them from overturning andspreading their contents across the cargoarea.
Bag holder under folding hatch in the floor.
1. Fold up the holder, which is part of the floor hatch.
2. Fasten the bags with strap and secure the carrying handle in the hooks.

12 V electrical socket - cargo area*
The electrical socket can be used for various accessories designed for 12 V, e.g. displayscreens, music players and mobile phones.
Lower the cover to access the electrical socket. •The socket also provides voltage when the remote control key is not in the igni-tion switch.
IMPORTANT
Max. power takeoff is 10 A (120 W).
NOTE
Remember that using the electrical socket with the engine switched off involves therisk of discharging the car's battery.
NOTE
The compressor for temporary emergency puncture repair has been tested andapproved by Volvo. For information on theuse of Volvo's recommended temporaryemergency puncture repair (TMK), Emer-gency puncture repair (p. 333).
